across the board. have you learned anything or adjusted your behavior for those who say you have not been outspoken enough about the rhetoric against the police department? >> we are in a very difficult moment. our focus has to be on these families and we are in a season that suggests we have to find a way forward. it's up -- supposed to be a time of peace and reconciliation. i have expressed tremendous report -- respect for nypd and i will continue to. in a democracy that people express their desire for more fair society and that is right and proper but they mustered peacefully. there can be no violence and no violence against those who protect us and who represent our society. the police are our protectors and they must be respected. commissioner branton has devoted

>> i talked with the new york city police commissioner at midtown precinct as he and the mayor are never getting a racially charged crisis that has taken hold of the city's history for what should be the happiest time of the year. we talked about the steps nypd is taking this week in the wake of sunday's horrible shooting of two police officers.

>> your officers have had to adjust some of their -- the way they go about their business but how much anxiety is on the streets? >> an exercise of caution, we did heighten the alert status immediately after homicides, the murders of our offices -- officers. we are that the individual acted on his own and was not some part of a larger plot or conspiracy. we will examine the security measures we have taken and there is no denying that the officers are feeling the most pain but also the idea that police officer's face dangers every day and this drives home the idea that the dangers can become real very quickly.

>> how are the families holding up? >> both -- we visited both this morning. the family is having great difficulty. it is a very close religious family. his parents do not speak english. in the chinese custom, that is so significant to have lost the only son and the wife -- they have been married for two months. >> one of the problems for the city and the country is the mayor's relationship with the

police force. you acknowledged that some officers have lost confidence and trust. you have a lot of trust in the mayor and their credentials on law enforcement. what is it that you come at a different place than others? >> there is a lot of familiarity over the years. every mayor has had a contentious relationship with the police force. the experiences with this mayor are nothing new. in terms of the issues of concern i do spend a lot of time with this mayor. obviously almost $400 million of support from this mayor over and above my budget. actually for things that will impact safety.

on the circumstances past week in that system which is in the test phase worked perfectly and identified the shots had in fired at let location. the mayor's heart is in the right place as it relates to safety. >> would you call him a law order mayor? >> he has spake in in strong support of broken windows. he has had to take on many of the supporters and that issue. they have tried to equate quality-of-life -- he fully understands that there are two totally different concepts. they have been a lot of people attacking me from my continuous support of the [indiscernible]

>> you have been to this, a tough relationship between our testers and some citizens in the police. what is your fingertip feel, is this going to go on for a while or is this a short-term thing? >> it is a change opportunity. police are expanding to the criminal justice system. i think it is broadening and some of the demonstrations there is a lot of dissatisfaction. a lot of these things that impact minority communities. it is broadening beyond the initial concern about police. where the most visitor -- visible. we are in those neighborhoods all the time.

if you look at it the only thing that has changed is the societal issues. the irony of the current controversy is this department has one of the best records of minimal use of force. the quality of life is to pet it on public safety. there is an irony in that the one area of concern that has improved has been lost in the controversy. >> the last question what is your holiday message to folk sword concerned about the state of the city? >> yesterday was the shortest dave of the year in terms of the
