pass comprehensive immigration reform. this is one of those situations where everybody is all over the map. says republicans are more likely to back down and get a cover mice on department of homeland security funding. some say it is less. what say you? >> i say more. i think the republicans in the house and elsewhere under a lot of pressure. this gives them a decent opportunity to back down given the white house has legal immigration thing on hold. >> you are going with the rational fallacy. the fallacious reasoning and thinking they will be rational. this so far -- a bush nominee says the president is behaving improperly. i think some republicans will see this as an off ramp and some will say let's keep writing and it is not -- fighting and it is not right.

>> you may be right. there have been a lot of fallacies in my time. there is been a lot of pressure building from people in the republican party. john mccain over the weekend saying it is too important to use the funding. i cannot help but think there is a huge chunk of the republican party that will put pressure on its leadership to take the off ramp. >> interesting voice sunday and monday on fox news. george will is saying the congress is not doing its duty to pass legislation. this is a case where john boehner seems to be drawing a pretty hardline. if you look at the statements from presidential candidates and republican leadership in the congress, they have said this decision proves they are right. while it is rational for them to give an,in, i don't see the

momentum. i don't think john boehner can get the votes right now to produce some kind of offering -- off ramp. >> boehner has taken a lot of flak. the majority of americans think he is wrong and i wonder if that will factor in at all. >> the white house begin a three-day summit to address violent extremism. that is weird because the president himself will not even mention the term islamic extremism. at least, that is what i heard over at fox news. >> at this point it is pathological. their inability and unwillingness to actively describe this. it is not just islamic radicalism anymore or islamic terrorism. this is really islamic supremacy. that is what we're up against.

we have a president that will not even at it there is a religious basis underlying. >> this is some way a tougher fight than the cold war. we agreed this line of attack is ridiculous because president bush had the same posture but will it blend? is this an effective line of attack against president obama and his war against terror? >> it is not just ridiculous. george said burlesque. it is not that george w. bush had the same posture. they had the same reasoning. their view is that radical islam is not really islam. there are a lot of radical islamic in the middle east that we need for this war that don't believe in terrorist tactics. there is good reason for the precedent. in the end, the substance is what is going to matter. you need to demonstrate

strength. >> for the president in this fight, the cnn poll shows the public's view on how he was handling the war on terror. the numbers have got significantly worse. republicans continue to not unite with the president. i think what are the most striking things that happened -- the president wants new authorization to fight this war. john boehner said not. he instead that, wesaid that we will see what happens. this war of words and the president's fitness to fight this is a real problem for the country. it makes cooperation and getting that authorization harder. you know that old political adage? it is a great one. "the boston globe" called new

hampshire a must win for chris christie. a town hall says rick perry must win iowa. thare there going to be any must win state for any republican candidate? >> i'm open to the idea of this cycle could be different. it will still be the same for most candidates. you might make a case that jeb bush does not need to win new hampshire. i cannot imagine myike hu ckabee be it without winning iowa. >> let's say rick perry finishes second in iowa behind jeb bush and second in iowa behind rand paul and then wins south carolina. take chris christie in new hampshire. let's say he finishes a strong third in iowa and second to

paul in new hampshire. that are so many candidates, so many ways to accumulate delegates. i don't see a lot of must wins. >> in a word, yes. if rick perry comes in second he has a past the nomination. i don't think there is a world where he finishes second in new hampshire and chris christie finishes second in iowa. i can imagine the path for those guys but in the real world given their weaknesses for one of the other two state, they have to win other them otherwise the momentum will not be there. >> people look at the rudy giuliani experiment. he waited for florida. did you perform well even without a win and you talk to the media about a delegate accumulation strategy and you keep up enough momentum by closing strong, i don't think you need to win an early's

state. as long as you are performing well in terms of media and some speeches, i don't think you need to win the early states. i don't think wins will matter with the exception of huckabee and santorum. >> i think i can imagine a scenario where those guys get that delegate accumulation strategy. a guy like huckabee needs to win iowa so he can get money. >> unless you have a super pac were people are writing you $50 million check. there are a lot of primaries. there is the new hampshire primary. the rush limbaugh primary. then, there is this -- >> governor palin welcome. >> how much do you think lorne michaels would pay me if i ran

for president in 26 dean? -- 2016. >> i don't think there is a number two big. >> what if i chose donald trump as my running mate? >> you are teasing him now. >> jerry seinfeld is right. that is not nice. john, of all the republicans who are going to run in the 2016, who has a chance to win the popular primary? >> one of the things we noted in the past is that past presidents, barack obama, george bush, they could all do monday night football, saturday night live. there is not a single republican -- a guy like rick perry showed he could do letterman. i don't see anybody that can play at the level of our last three residents in the pop culture realm.

>> there are some funny people. rick perry is kind of underrated. but the fact is nobody has a young media sense of humor. you look at the three young senators -- cruz rubio and rand paul, they are not laugh riot s. that lane is there. that primary matters not just for young voters, but it sends a signal to the public -- if you have a sense of humor, it works. there is a lot of strength in the field. but not a lot of strength there. there is one guy and it is chris christie. >> i really do think it is incredibly important. it is not coincidental that obama, bush and clinton were able to do well. >> the other person we did not mention who could win the primary -- hillary clinton. coming up, we will put one of

>> joining us now is the guy you want to hire. we have not done anything wrong yet but we are about halfway through the show. chris lehane for crisis management. thank you for coming. we want to run through some real scenarios real things that authority happened in 2015. no huge disasters but certainly times we can analyze. jeb bush hired a guy to do some internet stuff for him. first some tweets came out. he deleted some tweets and he was not fired. the second day, some posts came out and he was fired. how would you rate the job?

>> i give him a "b." some of this should've done in the due diligence phase. these are things that should have been knowable. they made a decision fairly quickly. 24 to 48 hours. i think they were smart to move. >> they vetted him and hired him or they failed to vet him? which is worse? >> they failed to vet him. that is more likely. all these hires, you have to do your due diligence. >> they were very friendly towards the guy. they didn't denounce him. is that the right way to get through to somebody? >> you don't want to throw people under the bus because they can say all sorts of things about you and you were

ultimately the bigger story, not the person that was removed. this is a marathon, not a sprint and that is the best way to deal with it. a story in a crisis is about how you as a candidate or organization reacts. what it says about you and your beliefs much less about the actual person. >> we had two republican candidates that got in trouble. chris christie when he was over in london and rand paul when he was here. christie made the statement that got him into trouble. paul did more ofthan that but not before he shushed a tv anchor.l what could have they done to make their performance better? >> it is two failing grades. this is a republican party that acted like they were experts on ebola. then something comes up about vaccines and measles and the act

like they don't know anything. christie got the worst grade. it took him a long time to actually deal with it. a counter is his core message which is he is a straight talker. not only was it a crisis in terms of not handling the situation well, it undermines somewhat the automatic of his campaign. i think paul was problematic because he is a doctor and is not really sound authentic as a doctor. i think you did an ok job with the visual of the photo. we live in an image world. i think he took a little bit long to get there but of the two of them, he got the better grade. >> scott walker has gotten a lot of criticism about his record in wisconsin. how would you rate the job they seem to be doing in being prepared to answer national and democratic critiques on what he

is doing in the state? >> they will stop funding wisconsin football for the ncaa tournament. it is an interesting issue to take on -- outlook schools in your state -- public schools in your state where education will be the center of conversation particularly on issues of economic equality. education is the passport to the american dream. both democrats and republicans will have to address that issue head on. >> does the walker organization seem big on this kind of stuff? >> i think jeb bush. they are still playing aa ball. they are facing major league pitching. in the situation for both christie and paul in some level those were self-made errors. happy to not go into the

situation and know you will not be asked? it is the level of not being ready for prime time. >> on the democratic side of the red in -- side, there had been's worries about a convicted sex offender. bill clinton accompanied him. the association between the former president has come up. how you think the hillary clinton campaign is handling that and should? >> it is very fact specific and there are not a lot of facts. the president ended his relationship with him. once the information began to be public. i think a lot of this is fact specific. i think for any of the campaigns, making sure they have their facts down together and your answer is consistent with those facts.

which makes the most sense? >> with a crisis situation, you go with a which was it was a one-time event only. i think huckabee already said on the record that he's never used. >> never denied peyote. a situation like that, do you go to huckabee and say you really have to tell us all the facts? >> a lot of these questions like pot and other types of drugs, you probably already had some kind of conversation with the candidate. if you have not for whatever reason, you go to the candidate and say we have one chance to answer this the right way. >> ever worked for a candidate that took peyote? >> not for my knowledge.

>> drop in the candidate first year you it is mrs. clinton. we are at a fundraiser. finally, it is caught on tape. there is a secret recording from a fundraiser where you hear a voice that sounds like hillary clinton saying expeltiveletive the people of new hampshire. a suggest it was doctored. c onto south carolina. or d. >> we know it has worked in the past. it is a play on the romney meets obama in 2008 situation. you knowledge that you should something you should not have said and move on. >> this is jeb bush professor bush. the iowa state fair and the

weapon is family brawl. in this scenario, there is a brawl involving the extended bush family and some civilians. do you a it is a private matter? b have a candidate make a joke about the brawl in bushes. c throw neil bush under the bus or d attack the new york times? >> it depends on the severity of the brawl. >> let's say there were some blood drawn. >> by? >> bush on iowan contacts. >> that is not good. >> what are you going with? >> i think you do a hybrid of a little bit of a brawlish bush with fun but then say people need to be a better. -- behave better.
