that is not the only new tension in the israeli-united states partnership. president obama seemed to dismiss the possibility of a peace effort any time soon. president obama: we can't pretend there is a possibility of something that is not there. we cannot continue to premise our public diplomacy based on something that everybody knows is not going to happen at least in the next several years. that is something we have to -- for the sake of our own credibility, we have to be able to be honest about that. mark: where does that leave the u.s.-israeli relationship? john: i think this is a horror show. the relationship between the countries has not been this bad since the george h.w. bush

administration. it is really bad and it has been bad for a while. president obama's tone, the way he spoke about netanyahu and what he had said before about the two state solution, it was incredible the way he called him out. mark: what could save it is a failure of the iran nuclear talks. some sort of continued intelligence operations. some sort of increased sanctions. if there is a deal, things will get worse. john: i wonder whether he has lost some leverage over that veto ability. let's focus on today. john kasich made a traditional stop. it is the old politics and eggs campaign stop.
8:03 pm
here's what he told the independents of new hampshire. governor kasich: i do not believe that. i believe economic growth is a means to an end. you know what we have done in ohio? john: that is not the kind of talk we hear from many republican potentials. do you think he will get in? is there room for john kasich in this crowded field? mark: i think it is a possibility. there is room for him in this race. he does not need to raise much money. john: the governor of ohio who won a huge massive reelection who expanded his vote with african-americans and others.

this sounds a lot more like a potential candidate. mark: he is a happy warrior who has had good relationships across the board. he is not afraid of a fight with parts of the party. even jeb bush, in some eyes, case it is more ready for the fight. mark: hillary clinton was at an awards ceremony. secretary clinton agreed to speak at the dinner before the e-mail scandal blossomed. she was faced with a bit of a sticky wicket. secretary clinton: i am all about new beginnings. [laughter] a new grandchild, another new hairstyle. [laughter]

a new e-mail account. [laughter] why not a new relationship with the press? mark: was that charming, sarcastic, or awkward? john: charming, that much, sarcastic, that much disingenuous, that much, and awkward, off the chart. mark: hillary clinton has many faces, none of them poker. if that is a reflection of her attitude, she has a lot of work to do. john: up next, politics with a capital p, and that rhymes with t and that stands for ted cruz. after this. ♪

by 2017, it is only going to have got more dangerous after that. anyone -- the weight of that responsibility does not weigh on your shoulders contemplating it is not fit to contemplate the office. mark: "the wall street journal" reported that israel spied on the united states. allies spy on each other all the time. would you tolerate israel spying on the united states? sen. cruz: they reported that israel spied on iran. at the end of the day, it is an interesting thing that in the course of these negotiations, we are apparently communicating the terms of the negotiations with russia and other countries, but not with israel. mark: would you tolerate israel spying on the united states if you were president?
8:11 pm
sen. cruz: it is no surprise to anyone that countries engage in espionage and defend their own national security. mark: so you would continue to spy on israel? sen. cruz: what every country is going to do is defend their national security. israel lives in a very tough neighborhood. if one thing sadly has been clear in the obama administration, they have real reason to be concerned this administration will not stand with them. john: there is only one potential republican candidate who had some comments about yesterday. >> ted cruz is a conservative. people have to make a decision which is the republican that cannot only excite the base, but can bring new people into the party?

sen. cruz: they seek out and get special favors from government. they are entitled to practice their business, but without subsidies. john: are you proud of what she did for goldman? sen. cruz: i did mention that. i have to say, a lot of times the caricatures of republicans they do not fit with the facts that i have an amazingly brilliant professional woman who was my best friend in the world and my partner in everything we do. john: a bunch of people compared you to the current president of the united states. what is your reaction to being called the republican obama?
