commodities. financial integration is perhaps the final frontier. there is lots of opportunity in the financial and services sector as well. it is a multifaceted opportunity for geographies, and consumers. rishaad: that is it at the end of the day. you talk about integration, getting together to discuss this, but there are competing claims. they are rivals in many regards. is there an appetite to get this done? glenn: absolutely. i think if you look at the neighborhood, you have china to the north with a population of around 1.2 or 1.3 billion people and india to the west with a population at around 1.5 billion. asean needs to find economics of scale. we think this is what the asean

economic community will do. perhaps the other thing which is leading to a bit of skepticism on what is going to drive this movement towards greater economic efficiencies is it is not the political multilateral architecture that you saw in europe. secretary only employs 300 people. the eu commissioned 34,000. the asean will not be an overly bureaucratic structure like the eu is but i think as a political level there is an understanding of the importance of integration, of achieving economies of scale. and more importantly i think there is a very strong commitment to it. rishaad: is china the main loser of a more integrated asean and indeed one that could be an economic rebel? -- rival? glenn: it certainly will be a

case that market share is going asia.redistributed across the average age of manufacturing work in china is now 37. in japan, 43, korea, 41. into southeast asia, that drops to 21 or 23. so i think new foreign direct investment will increasingly be looking at the cheaper and more useful populations in the asean which was almost exclusively a china decision previously. within the asean we have to be aware of that as you move towards the free flow of labor and capital eventually if production platforms do not move to where the cheapest labor is located the new risk indexes of labor from those economies to where the production platforms are, such as thailand and vietnam.

i think we can confirm the slowdown taking place. daniel: i think it is more than likely that they will. in the first quarter we obviously have some distortions from chinese new year, which was very late this year. it was quite hard to get a handle on the data. we have now had the pmi for april and that was weaker and then were expecting and it confirms the economy is not doing as well as we were expecting. that is still around where it was for the last six months so the economy is not picking up. it seems to be cooling. maybe not as bad as the dramatic headlines. also the bank of china has a lot to do to get the economy going and we expect them to do more in the coming months. that, aree have seen we likely to see interest rate

cuts proper in the pipeline? daniel: one or two more interest rate cuts. they do not want to go back to what they did several years ago when they spurred another ramp-up in lending but they want to move away from the reliance on credit growth and investment growth. they want to see the household sector driving the economy more. the slowdown we have seen is quicker than they would have wanted. they will be leaning against that. they want to stabilize growth from 7% this year, slow to 6% over the coming years. they will be alarmed by what has happened so far. rishaad: let's have a look at the big, big one. u.s. gdp. a few signs of late there is a e to the economy. how much of that is down to the weather? a big factor,s

uncertain as to what to do next. when the tremors are going to stop and they feel safe again. rishaad: what are the priorities at the moment? what is needed on the ground? sanjay: well, the immediate needs because we are coordinating with the government ministry of home affairs and the immediate needs are basic supplies like blankets, dishes, water, bottles. and clothing to keep warm. the government has established around 16 temporary evacuation places where a lot of displaced people are being catered to so most of the supplies are being requested by the government to help the 20,000 or 30,000 displaced people in kathmandu and around.
