elite women's sprint race in hamburg. harris.ry from trevor trevor announcer: let -- trevor: let's check out the course then. k ride.s will have a 20 -- seenseen or riders asers come to grief he, and you can see from the map here, numerous directions and a lot of turns. there are wet roads they won't have to contend with. there are a couple of 180 degree turns and it is an excellent, .lat tarmac surface they are going to make some pretty good times this afternoon. away they go. it looks like a recently clean start. >> the water temperature i think it's 21 or something like that?
1:06 pm
trevor: what went .7 in the water, 28 in the air. >> yesterday was 32 and 33 or so itd -- 32 or 33 and was very humid. leadat this, those swimmers are trying to make sure there is not a drop. you don't want to see if there are 25 or 40 people on this little lap. helicopter pulls back, we will see here and another 20 or 30 seconds, the bridge that they go underneath, and just a wall of people all the way around. the leaders are coming out of while thetunnel, first athletes are just going in. trevor: based on this event, i am not sure i have seen quite a distance of dispersal of .thletes before
1:07 pm
>> that's right, one of them is really putting the hammer down. sarah true is coming up and then they have to run up the stairs and then a 180 meter run until they make it to their bikes, so we are going to be at about nine they come seconds as up. here they come, nine minutes 35 seconds. looks over to the shoulder, no big surprise. the competitor from hungary is a second out of the water. caldwell is in fourth place. --m going to believe it
1:08 pm
believe that in just a matter of seconds we are going to see jorgensen coming through. carolinam specialist routier was first out of the water. vicky, she ist full on. the rest of those women would be wise to catch onto her. they should be working with her, because we have seen this before, if one athlete does too much work, eventually there legs tire and then the whole pack tires. if vicky is feeling that motivated, let her do 50% of the work but not 100% of it. that is a 180 degree turn, so we will know whether they are getting closer or not. that looks to me like it is
1:09 pm
getting closer, but it is hard to say. i think it is not going to far in the opposite direction. juergens son is just hanging on, i don't do the russian athlete here. the athlete from hungary knows how to play the game right. trevor: that is jody simpson in trouble. >> big disappointment there. she definitely doesn't look happy and i can feel the frustration. she is showing that she has got a technical problem with her wheel. can see thosend i two women fighting it out. just to put things in perspective, in gwen's 10 wins in the last eight months, her narrowest victory was right here in hamburg last year. sheila one by six seconds. if you take a look, and the jackson was just ask seconds
1:10 pm
behind her. so if she had been a vulnerable anyplace, it has been in hamburg. coming german upfront, through the crowd, it should not be a surprise, it is almost mandatory that when you are from home course, you go up front and get the crowd riled up. and they have been caught up. they have caught them just coming into the transition zone. gwen juergens and at the front. good for her for two reasons. she knows she is the best runner of the bunch. she knows he likes to say out of trouble. we have seen this in the transition of the zones in the -- transition zones of the past. don't be surprised to see gwen off at about 15 places, she never has a very fast transition. the key holland is a woman to look out for today. stanford could also be a big factor.
1:11 pm
holland did too much work on the bike. host: a large group of around 26 athletes were first in the second transition. was favorite for the five kilometer run. there is vicky holland, and i can see her being a silver medalist today, personally. that is a bit of a bummer to say that she is not going to win this thing. trevor: we have seen gwen. we have seen gwen so many times just pick off those in front of her. >> stanford is in a great position, holidays and a great position, sarah true, look at this, this is just spectacular. these guys come out every year. it is just remarkable. trevor: the two brits and the two americans? >> yes. trevor: that is the leading quartet. >> one american athlete and one
1:12 pm
british athlete are going to make the podium, do you want to make a bet on that? trevor: you are way too good with numbers. jorgensen andgwen just as they get onto the blue carpet, she should be pulling up, we will have a group of four bank together. you will see if she tries to make her move of anyone will try to go with her. stanford, holland, wow, somebody who is having a brilliant day is going to miss the podium. trevor: indeed they are, because jorgensen will be a colossal favorite from here, but second and third? anyone's guest. >> we have not seen juergens and in half the spread, we have always seen her take the lead in the last kilometer, largely when juergens and is looking like when she is just picking a slightly different line than stanford and true.
1:13 pm
they are trying to make the move. vicky holland looking like she is the only athlete who wants to go with her. trevor: 1.3 kilometers to go. that is less than a mile in old money. holland is sticking to your consent. , weever happens from here have seen your consent go and she just goes away, and she has not done that, not yet, anyway. that he holland and a great position. obviously, she is going to get yourself a podium, and just maybe she could be the string breaker here for jorgensen. sarah true looking like she is just trying to pull away from stamford who is hanging tough. slam -- klamer could end up in fifth spot?
1:14 pm
trevor: wow. >> holland is trying to see if maybe she can break gwen jorgensen. personally, if i was holland, i would have saved that for the last 100 meters, because you know the aerobic capacity of juergens and is not going to go away. these are epic battles here, we have seen the britt and the usa battles, 1-2 on both sides. here we go. there comes when jorgensen. she is picking it up. incredible job. that is 10 consecutive wins in a row. can she make it another? incrediblend made an and gutsy move with about 800 meters to go, but when juergens and looks like -- gwen jorgensen looks like she found that, this is unbelievable, it looks like she may go into chicago undefeated. she may go into the grand final undefeated, but it is gwen
1:15 pm
jorgensen from the united states , vicky holland is a still coming, this thing is not over yet, with jorgensen showing for the first time yet that she can also sprint. jorgensen from the united states of america is going to make it 1th consecutive win in a row, usa, number one! that will be the narrowest victory that she has had, vicky holland showing that she is, no question, someone to fight it out, and here comes the battle for third, and it is the british athlete, stanford will out sprint sera true. stanford's third across the line, true is fourth. gwen: a lot was going through my head, i was thinking, do i kick? will she kick first? she was definitely tough. there, i could
1:16 pm
feel her there on my shoulder, and it was going to be a fight for the end. vicky: i thought really hard, but for a let the last 1500 meters, i know i was pretty much at my limit, i was waiting for the last kick, i knew it was coming, but too much on the day. a lot was going through my mind. i thought, you know what, i had a little kick. non: i had a little kick at the end, and to share the podium with vicky will be fantastic. host: it is all about jorgensen with historic 11th win in a row. she was pushed to the brink in the final with vicky holland who finished second. great britain took two thirds of
1:17 pm
the podium, not to mention the lion's share of the german beer bus. the usa's sarah true had to heltle for fourth while raceh klamer got fifth. and kate is a ferrous -- katie zaferes missed the podium for the first time in 2015. gwen jorgensen remains unchallengeable with 4000 points in total. leapfrogged and with only two races to go before the grand final, the title looks -- looks atensen gwen jorgensen to lose.
1:18 pm
1:19 pm
javierspain's hobby or -- gomez returns to action in hamburg with the goal of staying at the top of the rankings. helping his cause is alistair brownlee. isn't taking gomez anything for granted and the title is far from one -- won. javier: i am happy how things are going. i was sick before the races, but so far the races have been good and i am number one at the moment, so i hope i can keep that until the end. we have a couple of more races to go and the final race in chicago will be very important. his biggeste of competitors could be his for -- n fernando alar
1:20 pm
za. native is thrilled as to how he 15 has unfolded. it is amazing for me but i am was injured very happy and i am very motivated for this race because that especially for me, i want to see a spanish team win. will takeperson who advantage of the absence of the is vincentothers luis. this is very good for
1:21 pm
me in very good for the french team, but i think everyone in france is hoping for a victory. away they go for this sprint race in hamburg, and there is some sprint specialists in the field. gomez has done this before. >> he has got to be close for the swim. he didn't have a great swim in geneva, and i not sure if he is in the middle of a big training block right now, but he is planning on doing the 73 world championships in australia. he was a champion in canada and he is trying to do the same thing again, so he will race here and race in stockholm and next we go to austria. will go toater he edmonton and in the final in chicago. so it has been a pretty busy month for gomez.
1:22 pm
you can see the water temperature there is just above the threshold of 20, so no one is wearing wetsuits today. they are coming out of the black tunnel and into the light and into a wall of sound as it is now just approaching 6:00 at night. we will get just a few shadows, but it is not dark here. it does not get dark until almost 10:00 p.m. look at those crowds. some of them were sitting a line about 2.5 hours ago to have a chance to get appearance get up close and personal with these incredible men. eight minutes and change, so they are having a very, very fast swim here. minuteseight and a half at this point. it will be fascinating to see how many make the lead group on the bike? >> i think a lot, today. trevor: that could benefit the likes of mola and murray and others. least 15e've got at
1:23 pm
guys all in close contact here, and then it is a matter of, you know, can that big chase pack stay close? trevor: and out they come. varga, rafael, aaron royle, a lot are in and great position. richard varga was first out of the water, followed others had a and lot to pick up with. gomez is really doing some work, really trying to hold off
1:24 pm
that mola-murray bunch. when you are the number one ranked man in the world, you really have to do that much work up front, and it just shows why he is so expected and so brilliant. they have actually tossed out two athletes that came out of the water with them in the form and another -- another.nd so once again, burial -- mario mola has just allowed a bit of a weakness in the swim to put them in a tough position. clearly, tommy is here to do his own job today, and kudos to him.
1:25 pm
i would be very surprised if he finished in the top 10 of the day. he could be hurting his chances for olympic points, and this will help them drive his pack, helping to drive the pack. remember, with 30 plus second, they came through, and the group grew to 35. just over 28 minutes and change now. seconds for the gap. >> they are stealing a few seconds every time, and they are saving their legs and they are not saving it for the podium, that is for sure. you are asking yourself, who in that elite group of nine are the most feared runners? lewis -- goemznd and luis.
1:26 pm
paper, you would think that this is going to be potentially luis, but wez, -- will see. >> two years ago, nobody would have called javier gomez a sprinter. spanish, one one of the french athletes went right by his transition area. there is our spanish athlete, the helmet is in the box in the shoes are off and germany is ahead first. he is going to run, courageously, he is going to run excitedly, gomez is a little slow out of the transition. seen a fewaven't runners in this. >> richard murray just got in front and mario mola beside him. host: with two of the races
1:27 pm
is in the lead and mario mola needed something special if he was going to make up lost ground. luis, gomez, uis -- luis, ounger man, lewis -- this is what he does. they don't have that many big world cup races in their country for the last couple of years, but they've got a dozen of these french grand prix races. they're all french and they are all at this exact format. ande young guys, the 17 18-year-old guys, they race 20 or 30 times before they get on the wts circuit. so they know how to run fast for 15 or 20 seconds.
1:28 pm
vincent luis, a brilliant swimmer, a great biker, and aaron royle moving himself in the second place. it looks like our frenchman is also in there, so two french schoeman isand sitting right on the shoulder there. one left to go, this is going to be stupid fast. trevor: now what do you think that tactic is going to be from gomez? luis going to try to break at some point or is he going to say, all right, i will take you on any sprint? -- in a sprint? >> while i think he is going to try to do both, and i can't remember which races, but they
1:29 pm
eventually got broken with about three, maybe a kalama and her half out from the finish line. -- maybe a kilometer and a half out from the finish line. here comes mola, mary imola, mola, can he do it? will he cursed the fact that the swim has let him down one more time? by mola, wow,ing this is just superb. a were 40 seconds down on these great runners. varga is running round -- running well. mario mola is just eating up the field. it is possible that he will have the fastest run of the day. trevor: here he goes. is going after him. he is not what you let him relax. this is going to be an
1:30 pm
incredible brownlee-gomez race that we have seen in the last acceleration,e new leads, new athletes, new tactics, here we go again, now it is vincent luis in the front. trevor: luis wasn't broken, so this could be vincent luis's first-ever win of a race or javier gomez's 12? as this is all about, you can never guess and you could kind brownlee brothers hadn't been in the battle, we would have had two incredible warriors. trevor: but this is epic enough and we know about javier gomez, and you have to really perform, he will give you nothing, but he is sticking to vincent luis and he is making luis win this race.
