today she was asked to weigh in on president obama's decision to keep troops in afghanistan. hillary: i support the president's decision. john: in the hillary daily ahead ofe pulled bernie sanders in the new hampshire boston pull. -- in the newter hampshire poll. mark, there has been a lot of back-and-forth about it hillary or bernie won the debate. put everything in the vague political blender, who wins the week? mark: hillary clinton wins the week, but i want to tell you nothing in politics is never as good or as bad as it seems. hillary clinton was not as weak a week ago. she is still an overwhelming favorite. the debate performance helped her a lot. her campaign has a spring in its

step. they are on offense in a range of things. i think bernie sanders, despite that one new hampshire poll, is still a mortal threat to her. jumping i offer you a retort. -- good gets better, the bad john: i offer you a retort. the good gets better and back gets worse. lot still hangs on this hearing. a lot of us are assuming she is going to do well. if she has a good week next week, she is going to be -- going to be on track. she will be on track in a way she hasn't been all year. mark: they don't have to spend time getting donors to calm down. everyone else can do other stuff like focus on winning. apostlenot solved the -- solved the puzzle.

john: something looks like real data. it looks like hillary clinton is getting a bounce back and bernie is not getting much. let's talk about the woman who is known as dws. there's turmoil in the democratic committee as some are speaking out against their leader. this time they are not all on background. thatsay on the record chairperson debbie scholz is not being honest about the process and said maybe it is time for a new chair. will this fallout lead to the following fallout, either more debates or the ouster of her as chair? john: i don't think in either case it will. the former mayor of minneapolis called yesterday and dream to debbie scholz out to me and

suggested she might be ready to call for her resignation because he watched her lying about another vice chair. the problem is there is not an outcry among the voters for more debates. the only people looking to force her hand would be president obama or hillary clinton. the on a person who can get her out of that job as president obama. mark: the way it is going to matter to a wider audience is dncary clinton needs -- the is a strong test hillary continues a strong dnc for -- hillary clinton needs a strong dnc. john: this thing has provoked people to come out and say what a lot of people have said for a long time, she is a week chair. if she stays that is bad for the democrats heading into 2016.

with third-quarter fundraising numbers now all in, there are lots of spreadsheets among the campaigns. three candidates in particular are subject to more scrutiny. those would be heller, jeb bush, and marco rubio. they are vulnerable to some criticism. on clinton the rnc notes 70% of clinton's hall was from donors giving less than $200 compared to 75% from bernie sanders. her burn rate was 86%. jeb bush in the second quarter raked in -- in q3 his racing rate has plummeted. his burn rate is as high as clinton's. rubio, he marco raised just $5.7 million, the equivalent of 171 luxury boats,

the way marco rubio defines them. fundraising picked up after a slow summer. still doesn't look that great. what interests you most? bush is not a shock and all type of campaigning. would have ae quarter where he laid substantially less than ben carson that would be a problem. clinton, to be a strong fundraising candidate you can't just be a strong donation candidate, she needs to do better on the internet. john: that burn rate is scary. 86 burn rate -- 86% burn rate. .ou are spending all that money 13.2 would be a respectful number if you weren't spending at all. he is spending it at his numbers are going down. a pretty good

number for him. if you dig into the detail that dig into the details that number doesn't look nearly as good. mark: you have a clinton campaign and bush super pac spending all this on tv. are spending the bulk of the money on ads and they aren't actually helping them improve, somebody messed up. john: let's not forget marco rubio. he has been supposedly playing the hot hand. he is the establishment guys who can knock off trump. spent $5.7 million. doesn't look impressive to me. they had a bad q3. mark: coming up, our colleagues and friends at the des moines register. after this word from our sponsors.

mark: you just had your interview with hillary clinton which everybody can read on the website. bullet points and highlights what she said to you? >> she really embraced president obama in this interview. she backed his policy in afghanistan. she gives him a letter gray -- letter grade of a. she is aligning herself with the president. she is happy with a new poll numbers that show her tied with bernie sanders for the first time in months. down the line i asked her if she

believes she is in the elizabeth warren wing of the democratic party. the premise and repeat what she said in the debate, she is a progressive who can get things done. john: a week from today we are going to be 100 days out from the iowa caucuses. how do things stand there at this point in time? october 24. that is when we start to see the campaigns mobilize staff. couches are starting to fill up the spare bedrooms in activists homes. you are starting to see more candidate activity, more appearances. fascinating. the biggest reality check is how much can change in those hundred days. was july 16.

that is probably the biggest take, everything can change. thinkat what point do you -- at what point, who do you think and win the republican primary? james: we are still try to beure out who is going to the outsider candidate, who is the insider candidate, jeb bush has a lot more camping advertising. think we are seeing the john kasich campaign right now, although they are putting more money in. this is the more maturing part of the campaign. eightk they are candidates in the state of iowa today. people that many you can make a plausible argument who could win the primary.

mark: you mentioned the poll that shows hillary was a bit of a bounce. at this moment, who is the new hampshire front-runner? james: if you think the invisible primary is basically on three elements, polling, , you,, and endorsements still have to give the edge to hillary clinton. her organization on the ground is superior. you have to give it to clinton. bernie sanders is the one with the energy and the momentum. mark: we have been waiting for ted cruz to catch fire in your hampton.

is that happening now, are they poised to become one of the leaders as opposed to the middle of the pack where he has been? jennifer: not happening yet. strategistsican thought ted cruz would be the one to win the iowa caucuses. they predict those conservative caucus-goers are going to hit -- theyc button and say want somebody who is not going to be floundering around with a long learning curve. his -- not be winning he has a solid organization here. he is making a presence. he is making this right now. mark: i'm hearing what you are

saying, cruises poised. john: let's shift it to you, if ted cruz were somehow to sneak -- a lot of people think it is -- if he does that and shows up in new hampshire, would it at all be hospital to a ted cruz candidacy? i think what is good for him is that would give definition to the conservative cause. on the precipice of being that conservative candidate. does he get third, does he get second? right now we are in a moment in new hampshire where depending on your poll donald trump is in first place. -- most recent poll sometimes it is ben carson. the people are constantly talking about is who is that

establishment? who is going to win that primary? you have chris christie. that is where the game is at right now. win person will probably the new hampshire primary. ted cruz certainly has enough on the ground that he could easily be that choice. >> is that conflict manifesting itself? bigifer: that is the conflict and establishment lane. the question is can he capitalize on that? you know as well as i do organization matters. organization is tried and tested.

marco rubio didn't have any organization in iowa at all. you have jeb bush that has a very strong organization. he has by far the strongest organization in iowa. he's got the endorsements, he has people working hard for him on the ground. when you ask who are your top two or three, they always say jeb bush and marco rubio. mark: look for to reading your whole -- we will be right back for someone who knows the madam secretary quite well.

mark: and now madam secretary. he became a recurring character on the cbs show that plays off hillary clinton's time as security of state. you might know her from law and order or from her music. secretaryd on madam and released her second album. i sat down with hennessy the other day to talk about her very busy week. jill: you couldn't have asked for better timing. it gave us a nice little springboard for the pr. in new york city. mark: it is essentially a -- john: it is essentially a

dc-based show, very convenient for someone who has a husband and two lovely children. jill: if you want to see my kids -- john: you have two to be part that define you. they think about law and order and crossing jordan. crossing jordan you are in longer. i see people come up to you because law and order was such an iconic show. jill: it is syndication. -- tv in the mornings and i will see them in the afternoon and they will think i'm still on the show. john: how did you prepare for jackie kennedy? in terms of accurate -- in terms of acting challenges, how do you

prepare for that role? jill: it was terrifying. i was very apprehensive about even taking the part. she is somebody who i admire greatly. you want to maintain the respect and dignity of that human being who is a real human being, especially to the family. john: you are a big consumer of political news, you watch a lot of political shows and have a lot of strong views. you have done a lot of political work in the past. jill: that is what we have been dealing with in the headlines. john: talk about your character

in the show and what it has been like working on the program. character playing a who works with the defense intelligence agency. very interesting to play some buddy from a very different perspective. definitely, by any means necessary, sacrificed a few for the many. many working closely in the field. everything is by the book. she does her job. john: i joked about your politics, you are liberal. pretty liberal. your politics are not nearly as hawkish. how do you reconcile and work through it and deal with conflict?

jill: you look at cause-and-effect. seeing what the potential outcome could be if i screw up once in my job and we could have a terrorist attack in our city because i forgot to. and i -- forgot to dot an i -- what is the possible outcome? in that way i can kind of get it. one thing i also love in politics is i don't always have to agree with someone's point of to have the utmost respect for them. john: have you personally made a choice about a candidate to support in this race?

jill: there are aspects i really like. are we talking about one side or another reactor -- or another? i have always had the most profound respect for hillary. i think she has accomplished more than most people have accomplished in five night times. you need age-old of that. he is really laying some nice groundwork. it is the connotations of the word socialism. john: you can see madam ass.etary being a hard

six years since the last one, what made you decide i want to do this time-consuming thing? and take it out and put it out in the world? jill: i really can't feel like i can't not do the music writings. i never thought i could make the album. i sat there, i wrote to these yous, my husband said should pursue this, don't give up on this. i sort of had this mentality that life is short, throw it against the wall and see if it sticks. ♪ records untiling i physically can't anymore.
