and elsewhere that we have mutual defense treaties and we will honor them. it it is essential that america's w ord be good. i know this campaign has caused worries on the part of many leaders across the globe -- i have talked with a number of them. and i behalf of myself, think on behalf of a majority of the american people, i would like to say that our word is good. it is also important that we look at the entire global situation. there is no doubt that we have other problems with iran. personally i would deal with the problems, having put that lid, then still to be facing that. donald never tells you what he would do. we have started a war? would he
10:31 pm
have bombed iran? if he's going to criticize a deal that has been very successful at giving us access to iranian facilities we have never had before, then he should tell us what his alternative would be. but it's like his plan to defeat isis -- he says is a secret plan, but the only secret is that he has no plan. we need to be more precise in how we talk about these issues. people around the world follow our presidential campaigns so hints., trying to get and they rely on us? -- can they rely on us? i intend to be a leader of our country that people can count on, both here at home and around the world. to make decisions that will further peace and prosperity, but also stand up to bullies, whether they are abroad or at home. we cannot let those who would try to destabilize the world, to

interfere with american interests and security to be given any opportunity as a. lester: your time has expired. mr. trump: one thing i would like to say. lester: very quickly. mr. trump: hillary will tell you to go to her website and read about all how to defeat isis. which you could've defeated by never hiding it going in the first place. -- never having it going in the first place. they are in more and more states emanations. it is a big problem. as far as japan is concerned, i want to help all of our allies. your are losing -- we are losing billions of dollars. we cannot be the policeman of the worl we cannot protect countries all over the world where they are not paying us what we need. lester: just a few final questions. mr. trump: she has no business ability. n need hard, you need some -- eed heart, but you need some
10:33 pm
basic ability. all of the things she's talking about it have been taken care of in the last 10 years while she had great power. race, she ever wins this they won't be taken care of. lester: this year secretary clinton became the first woman nominated for a major party. you said "she does not have a presidential look." standing here right now, with mean by that? mr. trump: she does not have the stamina. i said she does not have the stamina. to be president of this country, you need to make this stamina. lester: the quote was that she did not have a presidential look. mr. trump: did you ask me a question? you have to be able to negotiate on trade deals. that is right. with japan, with saudi arabia -- i mean, we are defending saudi arabia, and with all the money they are not paying, all you have to do is speak to them. you have so many different
10:34 pm
things you have to be able to do. i don't think hillary has the stamina. lester: let's let her respond. mr. trump: -- mrs. clinton: as soon as he travels to 128 countries and negotiate a cease-fire, a peace deal, a release of dissidents and new opportunities in nations around the world, or even spend 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee, he can talk to me about stamina. [cheering] [applause] mr. trump: let me tell you, hillary has experience, but it is bad experience. we have had so many bad deals. [applause] youher it is the iran deal are so in love with, where we gave them $150 billion back. whether it's anything -- name it. you almost can't name a good deal.
10:35 pm
i agree she has experience, but it's that experience. this country can afford to have another four years of that kind of experience. [cheering] lester: we are at the final question now. mrs. clinton: he tried to switch from looks to stamina. this is a guy that is called women pigs, slobs, and dogs. someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has said is that women don't deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men. and one of the worst things he has said was about a woman in a beauty contest -- he loves beauty contests, supporting and hanging around them -- he called this woman mrs. piggy. then he called her mrs. housekeeping because she was latina. donald, she has a name. mr. trump: where did you findmr.
10:36 pm
trump: her? mrs. clinton: she has become a u.s. citizen. mr. trump: oh really? mrs. clinton: you can bet she is going to vote this november. [applause] mr. trump: hillary is hitting me with tremendous commercials. some of it is entertainment. some of it has been very vicious -- rosie o'donnell -- i said tough things to her. everyone agrees that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her. i want to say something extremely rough to hillary, to her family, and i said to myself, i can't do it. it's inappropriate, it's not nice. but she spent hundreds of millions of dollars on negative ads on me, many of which are absolutely untrue. they are untrue and misrepresentations. i will tell you this lester, it's not nice. i don't deserve that. it's certainly not a nice thing she has done.
10:37 pm
it's hundreds of millions of ads. and the only gratifying thing is -- i saw the polls come in today. lester: we have to move on to the final question. mr. trump: with $2 million spent, find either winning or tied. [applause] lester: one of you will not win this election. are you willing to accept the upcoming as the will of the voters? mrs. clinton: i support our democracy. sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. but i certainly will support the outcome of this election. hard to plantvery doubts about it. -- donald is trying very hard to plant doubts about it. this election is not so much about us as it is about you and your families in the country and future that you want. i hope that you will get out and vote as though your future depended on it. i think that it does. lester: same question, will you accept the outcome as the will of the voters?
10:38 pm
mr. trump: i want to make america great again. we are a nation seriously troubled. we are losing jobs, people are pouring into our country. the other day we were supporting 800 people. perhaps they pressed the wrong button, or worse than that, it was corruption. but these people we were going to support -- the port for good reason became citizens. and it was 800, and now it turns out it might be 1800, and they don't even know. lester: will you accept-- mr. trump: i'm going to make america great again. i don't think hillary will. if she wins, i will absolutely support her. [applause] lester: that concludes our spirited debate for this evening. you have covered a lot of ground, but not everything, as i suspected we wouldn't. the next debate scheduled october 19 washington university in st. louis and october 19 at nevada las vegas.
10:39 pm
a reminder, the vice presidential debate is scheduled october 4 at longwood university in farmville, virginia. my thanks to hillary clinton and donald trump and hofstra university for hosting us tonight. good night everyone. [applause] >> that ends the first historic debate between hillary clinton and donald trump. mark halperin and john heilemann here. lots of spirited coverage by these candidates, now picked over by media all over the world. what are your thoughts about what happened? john: it was a debate unlike any i have seen. the end was asked -- was extraordinary when hillary went and went after trump about his comments about women. then talking about her campaign has.
10:40 pm
i thought she was extremely competent tonight. she was on offense most of the night. she said the tone and pace for the debate. she knew when to explain and when to attack. i did not see her make a significant breadth of mistakes. no one will judge this and talk about a loss for hillary clinton. i think trump in many cases seemed to be taking the bait too often, too hot too often, yelling too much, especially early on, talking too fast, and not being prepared on a lot of basic facts. mark: come had some solid moments particular talking about washington and how hillary clinton did not change things. but he was on the defense about his tax returns, birther-ism, the iraq war. he played more defensive end cheated. he was caught in her attempt often to play defense in a way that was not helpful to him. voters talking about his business record. that was not clear. for people watching the first

time, this is not a disaster or the following offer him. but he failed to live up to what his campaign was looking for. john: hard to imagine anyone will come away from this debate thinking that trump made progress any measurable way towards becoming president. the bottom may not drop out, but he advanced nowhere tonight. mark: you are watching our coverage on bloomberg tv and twitter, streaming live in partnership. john and i are live in the spin room. we're going to talk to people all over the room, perhaps including donald trump. john: mr. bennison, step in sir. you can stand right here. >> right next to you? john: we have mr. joel benenson, chief strategist for hillary clinton's campaign. also hoping barack obama in 2008-2004. click about how -- talk about how she did tonight. joel: i think she brought a

have never strayed from focusing on that. that is who he is. you can see within minutes, not just dissembling about the murder rate in new york -- i think you got fact checked by the new york police department that murders were down. or cleaning he said that china never created climate change. his own website had a tweet. john: apparently that we has now been removed. joel: removed! it's unfathomable this man gets up and lies on the stage like that during a debate. i don't know what he is thinking. there are records of all of these things. who does he think he is getting? -- he is kidding? john: when the topics were trade, jobs, changing washington -- it seems before things started to get hot, they were fairly evenly matched. he seemed to be getting the better of the debate at the beginning. did you worry that this was the way the debate would go?
10:45 pm
joel: no. he is talking done america right from the start. it is this dystopic vision. and he doesn't to the point of fabricating. pennsylvania manufacturing is back up. record exports in certain rust belt states. when hillary clinton talks about what we needed to economically and says we have to compete and win in the global economy. and we're going to invest in you to do it. jobs of the future that you can support a family with. john: last question, the debates are defined by a moment. did you see a big moment in this debate? do you think it will be repeated ad nauseam? joel: i think in the coming weeks and days you will see several. rooting for the housing crisis, thinking that was smart so that he could make money -- totally being flummoxed and not having an answer on what he's hiding on

his tax returns. hillary clinton's comments about her role as secretary of state on a national security issues, global issues. i think those will play well. and framing the choice about what kind of country we are going to be. john: i will say one thing. i will ask if you agree or disagree. hillary clinton studied a lot of opposition. she seemed to enjoy delivering a lot of those hits to donald trump face rather than from a distance. joel: most of what you call hits, most of them are his own words, things he has set himself. it's not like you had to dig very deep. that's what he says that so outrageous. then he asked around them that disqualify him for being president. john: i have seen joel benenson say on some occasions that his candidate has won when he didn't really believe it, but i think he really believes it tonight. i am at hofstra university in
