welcome to mumbai. it is nice to meet you. >> thank you. the staff is extremely thoughtful and detail oriented. >> hi. >> welcome to the oberoi. >> it is very refreshing in weather like this. >> nowhere else have i been greeted with personally embroidered napkins and customized seat. plus, the rooms are spacious, with comfortable beds and large work desks. across the peninsula, you will find the gateway of india, mumbai's most iconic monument. though the city's name was officially changed in 1995, most locals still call it bombay, and just behind the gateway, is the taj mahal palace, the city's most impressive hotel. if the oberoi is all brains, the taj is all beauty. as you wander the halls, you can feel the weight of indian history, from the colonial styling to the modern-day masterpieces lining the halls. all the traffic and bustling markets in mumbai can be dizzying, so yoga near the sunning pool offers a welcome respite. >> you can experience the luxury of this morning so you can experience complete vitality throughout the day. >> when it comes to business

dinners, head straight to the table around the corner from the taj. it is classy without being pretentious, and quite enough -- quiet enough for dealmaking. that may be why the locals are obsessed with this spot. the menu is more trendy than traditional, with knockouts like sweet-and-sour brussel sprouts and yellowfin tuna tataki. plan to eat dinner late, 9:00 p.m. is standard. ♪ >> if you have a day off, escape the clamor of the city by hopping a ferry to a nearby island. the city fades and an inner calm sets in. [children laughing] >> you will be surrounded by sweet indian children who toss snacks to flocks of seagulls that trail the boat. you can also hire a speedboat for $500 and cut the journey from an hour to 25 minutes, but you will miss the local color. on the island, you'll find a path with about 1000 stairs and a handful of monkeys. it leads to a series of amazing fifth century caves lined with

relief sculptures dedicated to the hindu god of shiva. if you can't make it across the water, you can stay right in the middle of mumbai, where there is plenty to see. stop by a streetside coconut vendor. they are everywhere. if you are still jet lagged, the electrolytes will help. one of my favorite hole in the walls and all of mumbai is this lace. -- this place. there is just one choice here, bright and flavorful food which is like all-you-can-eat sampler platters. the restaurant was passed down from father to son, and the son is very enthusiastic about his locally sourced cuisine. since india has gone cashless, ask to add a 10% tip before settling the bill. you can also charge tips for bellhops and housekeeping back at the hotel. after lunch, hit the streets and find the perfect piece of india to take back home. d popli and sons is any family -- a family affair where the , owner keeps the real jewels

hidden in the back room. the owner's son designs many the pieces himself, and sources the rest from jaipur. antiques are huge in india, but you can't take anything that is more than 100 years old out of the country. you can, however pick up carved , elephants and crystal drawer pulls salvaged from maharashtra palaces and effigies just next door. nearby at phillips, i also found beautiful folk art figurines, and an amazing vintage photo collection. for clothing, there is a great spot called bungalow eight, hidden under the bleachers of mumbai's biggest cricket stadium. it is tricky to find, but you will be rewarded with the prettiest block printed scarves, all arranged by color. but back to business. ♪ if you have one last deal to

close, head to bombay canteen. the menu is an ode to india's regional recipes and native ingredients, like red snapper or kashmiri lamb. and don't miss the drinks at air, the rooftop bar at the four seasons. guest bartenders shake up some of the city's best sundowners. go to make one last impression, or let bombay make one last impression on you. ♪ >> from one of the world's busiest cities, we will head for the open road and check out three high-performance sports cars. you have to see them side-by-side to know which one is perfect for you. >> this car is so perfectly balanced. >> it is really a treat to drive it, especially on winding roads. >> this is "bloomberg pursuits." ♪

behind the benz and the jag, but each is a thrill to drive in its own way. >> this is the 2017 porsche 911 carrera cabriolet. the engine is a 420-horsepower six-cylinder boxer engine mounted in the rear. this is porsche's famous engine. it is difficult to describe the feeling when you get behind the wheel. this is where that mystical porsche x-factor comes in. the rear wheel drive on 20-inch carrera s wheels and porsche torque vectoring that grips the road better than any other model. the amg gts feels like a rocket ship. it is faster and more fun to drive in any mercedes. this car has a lot to offer. it has that amazing v8 engine. it has the horsepower. it has the torque. of course, if you are not careful, the rearwheel drive amg will fishtail forward with a mind of its own. that said, it is amazing in a straight line. this is the two-door coupe jaguar debuted in 2015 as a way

to get back in the game, and the company did it with flying colors. the handling is great. i mean this car is so perfectly balanced. it is really a treat to drive it, especially on winding roads. the torque that you feel when you drive it is the most impressive of the group, but it is not as connected to the road as the 911, nor as smooth as the amg. it is tight when it comes to steering and braking. ♪ >> the 911 is imminently recognizable, yet after all these years, it still impresses. the front end is flirtation, the rear is muscle-y, and the headlights are friendly. this is mercedes' bad boy halo car meant to recall the glorious gullwing mercedes of the 1960's. the idea is its sexy allure will attract young new fans to the brand.

this is the car you want to make a really loud statement. the jag is all muscles and roar, hunched up at the seams like a football player. if you kind of like a hunky mass of metal and gears under your foot, this is the one for you. ♪ >> porsche was the first brand to introduce the pdk paddle shift technology, which is quicker and better for city driving than manual. there is also a backseat in this option, something the other two don't have. now i don't know if you would put anybody in that backseat except for maybe your dog or someone you don't like, but it is back there. you can use it in a pinch. inside, i loved how the mercedes looked. it has crazy octopus-like around -- round dials all the way through the center and dash, and everything felt thick and rich. there is plenty to see inside the jaguar, lots of loud, loose stitching, performance seats, and even a handle for front passenger to hold onto for dear life.

this is the least well done of our three when it comes to interior quality and design, but it is still pretty great. ♪ >> the bottom line, you can't go wrong with any of these incredible machines, but if you want the whole package at the best value, the 911 is the clear winner. sure it is not as aggressive looking as the amg and it has less power than the jag, but its incredible connection to the ground, it's cozy perfect german handling, it's superior suspension, and it's minimal but quality interior means the 911 carrera s cabriolet more than stands its ground. ♪ >> coming up, a master chef lays out the rules for ordering a truly delicious steak. >> treat the steak with respect. don't douse it in salt before you taste it. >> a team of brothers aims to re-create a piece of america's past, the vintage teardrop camper is making a comeback. >> it is learning to work very precisely and carefully. >> this is "bloomberg pursuits." ♪

♪ >> steak houses can be intimidating. which rules do you have to follow, and which ones are made to be broken? "pursuits" has the answers. josh: i am josh capon. we are here to go over the rules of how to make sure you enjoy

your steak. first of all, ask to see the steak that you are ordering. you don't buy a car without taking it for a test drive. all you have to do is ask, and any of our servers will come over with a beautiful meet display and show you. rule number two, be patient, order a couple of appetizers. a quality piece of meat like this is going to take 20-25 minutes to cook properly and come to the table. number three, treat the steak with respect. here at the bowery meat company, this is all dry, aged meat. it has got a funk. it has got a flavor. don't douse it in salt before you taste it. enjoy it for what it is, then condiments and everything else. rule number four, order the steak the way you want it cooked. i'm not going to tell you how to eat your meat. trust that the steakhouse is going to cook it the way you want it cooked and order it to that temperature. number five, don't cut off the side and say my steak is overcooked. no, no, no, cut the steak in the middle.

check the temperature from the middle of the steak. number six, don't be afraid to take home leftovers. these are big steaks. if you don't eat them, i might. most important, when you come to a steakhouse, remember that animals gave up their lives for you to enjoy these beautiful cuts of meat, so you should enjoy them and respect them along the way. ♪ >> to close out "bloomberg pursuits," a regular series we call "made." because to truly appreciate an object of luxury, you have to understand how it comes to be and to journey to the workshop where it comes to life. ♪ >> quite often i have been driving down some highway and i will see a road that juts off that highway and wonder, where does that road go? ♪ >> travel is extremely important. it is not a luxury.

it is a necessity. i feel getting out into the middle of nowhere helps you recharge. ♪ >> my name is britton purser. i own a company called vintage overland. we build teardrop camp trailers. we being my two younger brothers and myself. and we are located in grand junction, colorado. ♪ >> this is britton's business. it is his idea. it is his product that he has come up with. he started getting phone calls, a lot. i have a long-standing, crazy love for these vintage trailers. i just love them. it felt like the realm of destiny, like, i have got to go do this.

>> teardrops were first introduced after world war ii. [horn honking] >> the reason they have the materials that they use, the cheap wheels, the aluminum, things of that nature, it is quite simply because they were using army surplus. >> between the three of us, we have done it all, all the trades, carpentry, tile work, sheet rock, electric, plumbing, all of that, cabinetry. >> phase one is the woodworking phase. so we put the pattern down on here, and we trace our lines, and i cut it rough with the jigsaw, very imprecise. ♪ >> i'm just getting most of the material out of the way. and now i'm going to put the

pattern, clamp the pattern back on here, and i am going to route out to a finer degree with the router against our pattern to make it more precise and smooth. ♪ >> what i am doing right now is building what we call the h-frame. it is really the sign of the trailer. >> in the shop, it is mostly the two of us. he doesn't have time. he is making phone calls and answering phone calls, and selling. so we cut out the wood, finish everything, put the box together, so now we have a wooden box. >> a lot of people don't understand hand tools, but they are absolutely the quickest to get things done a lot of times.

>> i try to do the maximum amount of quality with the bare minimum of tools. >> building each caravan, it takes approximately two weeks to assemble and finish. >> the second step is we insulate the box, and then we skin it with aluminum. ♪ >> it is a soft aluminum. we have to be careful in the shop. if we dent the side of the trailer, we have got to pull that piece of skin off and put a new one back on, so it is learning to work very precisely and carefully. >> cody's role in this has been to be an absolute pain in the butt. like never happy, it is never good enough. >> are you flush? >> it's good.

>> ok. >> if it was britton and myself, it would be pretty neat, pretty nice, but with cody in the mix, they are unbelievably over the top. >> this just came back from the powder coater. ♪ >> we put the completed box on a frame, then we jack that frame up and put the wheels on it. colin starts making the side doors, and then we work on the rear hatch door. ♪ >> after that, it is finishing details. i get inside and we put in some trim, add the switches, test all the lights. dome lights, beautiful. the fan, beautiful, all three speeds.

we put in a slide out table. then after that, we peel all the protective plastic off the aluminum. >> be very careful because these knives will scratch the surface. >> we put on the decals. >> these are lightly put in place. peel off this real slow. >> and very last step is to put the hub caps on. ♪ >> because they are chrome, we want them to be no scratches. and we just put them on, and it goes pop. that is a sense of relief, and now we can get on to the next one. ♪ >> what i envision is you take that caravan, not with a new vehicle. you take it with an old vehicle, you take it with an old jeep, you take it with an old land rover.

our caravans are built to be taken off-road. it takes you to areas that not everyone can get to. >> the thing about these trailers is not what they are, but what they aren't. they are not an rv. these are symbols of simplicity. they are symbols of sanctuary, of solitude. you get inside them, and i don't know the feeling of a womb, but the roundness inside and the warmth of wood, they are a retreat that goes with you. ♪ >> the whole goal is for someone who purchases a caravan from us not to go somewhere. that is not the point. the point is to go nowhere. >> you are in the middle of nowhere.
