she has learned from more than 35 years in public office. speaker pelosi, thank you for speaking to bloomberg. you are one of the most recognizable and admired politicians out there. what did you learn in the last 40 years about leadership and politics? rep. pelosi: i have been learning about leadership for a long time, seeing it another's, and recognizing what is needed to get the job done. you need to know why you're doing this, because you will be under attack. you will -- know what you are talking about. think in a strategic way. that is all appear. then connect directly with people. if you can show them how important what you are advocating is, and they trust your judgment, and you have a

plan, you will have followers. francine: is it harder to do that in 2023 because of the divisions in america? rep. pelosi: our goal is not an inch by inch. it is long-term. it is always to bring people together. we have an aberration in our country right now, but hopefully that will not last too much longer. nevertheless, we still have to strive for unity. sometimes you achieve it, sometimes you don't, but we have a responsibility to act in a bipartisan, transparent, accountable way. francine: how do you think president biden is doing right now? rep. pelosi: i think he is doing great. i think he is one of the best presidents in recent history. no one has accomplished more since lyndon b. johnson. whether it is covid, our infrastructure bill, the science

and chips initiative to take us into the future, whether it is the ira, which is just remarkable to recognize the challenge of the climate crisis and address it significantly in a bigger way than anyone ever has, but recognizing what has to be done and at the same time recognizing our men and women in uniform and. our francine: he has accomplished a lot on paper, and he doesn't aunt get a lot of recognition from voters? rep. pelosi: please understand what is accomplished, what it means to you and your kitchen table. most people i am realizing are not thinking about politics all that much. they are thinking about their

own challenges and the rest. w need toe. -- we need to relate to that. no one is better at that than president biden. he is mr. empathy. i think he will be reelected. we do not agonize over what isn't, but organize toward what will be. francine: what has it been like for the democrats to be a minority? rep. pelosi: i would not recommend the minority. we will win it back. we have every confidence in that. they said we would lose 40 seats, 30 seats at a minimum. we lost 5. francine: how have you changed as a politician? rep. pelosi: i think i have mellowed out, become gentle. francine: [laughter] really?

rep. pelosi: i pretty much neil what i was getting into. i did not seek running for leadership. people encouraged me to do so. i knew what was at stake. i knew how to get the job done, and i knew how to draw people together. the same advice i give others, i give to myself. women have intuition. when i was young that is what people talked about. intuition is a very valuable thing in leadership. when people would say to me "i want to run for president, or mayor, or leadership in the congress," you are going from deductive reasoning to intuitive. you must act. the more time you don't, the fewer your options are. be ready. know your subject, has good

judgment, be wise. rep. pelosi: you stood -- francine: you stood up against president trump many times, and that got you into spots of trouble. our people now more afraid of taking him on -- are people now more afraid of taking him on? rep. pelosi: i did not stand up to him many times. i stood up to him one time and it took, a while. it is one thing to say we have a disagreement on policy, and we do. it is another thing to say that truth is not prevailing. it is another thing to say there is a recognition of all of the violations of the rule of law, that any person is above the law, undermining the press, which the freedom of the press is the guardian of the gate of freedom. he was clever. undermine the press, undermine

the rule of law. the lengths to which she will go is more frightening. he is a threat to our democracy. francine: he is so popular. rep. pelosi: he is popular among his group. francine: are you surprised by how popular he is? rep. pelosi: i am never surprised. that is a word i do not use. there is a certain element of the population who will just go for him. they are people who we would never get. they do not share our values in terms of the dignity and worth of every person. there are some people who support him who are just afraid, and that is to be respected. when people ask me are you afraid of what will happen, i say no because of the goodness of the american people and the strength of our democracy, we will prevail. the flag is still there, as we say in our national anthem.

francine: is there a republican presidential candidate you could not live with? rep. pelosi: i'm not into republicans, i'm into democrats, and hopefully the republican party can find a candidate. take back your party. the republican party. you have done great things for our country. you are a grand old party. recapture that! america needs a strong republican party, strong democratic party too. hopefully, as soon as we get through this, shall we say, cancerous situation we are in, the malignancy of trump, they will emerge in a strong way with leadership i know is there in the republican party. francine: up next nancy pelosi's

security. it is so important. secondly is economics. how do we relate economically? and governance. governance, what is the strength of the democracy in your country. how do you treat people and respect them? what is the integrity of your economic system? those are how we relate as americans abroad. on security what is happening in ukraine is a challenge to democracy not just of their, not just in the nato countries, but -- not just there, not just in the nato countries but to the world. putin does not respect lives or

children. he is frightening. what is doubly frightening as someone like the former president who thinks that is ok. it is so sad and so extreme that everything to me is not frightening, but in opportunity. francine: when you look at china for example when you look at what the u.s. has been doing with china how should they treat china going forward? rep. pelosi: china is a big country, and so are we. we need to find an accommodation on how we treat each other. in terms of the three things we mentioned, china has been a violator of transferring weapons of mass destruction. in terms of economics they have violated every standard of

piracy, every wta rules and the rest. in terms of governance, hong kong tibet,, we are a threat. we do not have shared values. we have a shared planet, and we have to work with the chinese to save the planet. they are now the biggest emitter, if not us. they are second. they are part of the solution in all of this. i have been to china the most since tiananmen square the biggest critic. we still have to work together in certain areas, and we have to find those. i don't think we find them by rewarding them. i think we find them by mutual discussion. francine: is that bringing them closer?

establishing a relationship with the u.s., so may be a becomes a better working relationship economically? rep. pelosi: our trade deficit with china is an immorality. when you saw the big fuss that was being made about japan a long time ago it -- when i first started criticizing china about the 3 year as i said, the trade deficit was $5 billion a year. people told me "you cannot make a fuss about that because the trade will lead to this, that, and the other thing." now the trade deficit with china is not $5 billion a year, it is $5 billion a week, and we gave it to them. they use that money for their

foreign exchange to go into other countries, by up support, and all that -- buy up support, and all that. francine: how often do you get asked about your trip to taiwan? rep. pelosi: not often enough. francine: has it changed something in the way that the u.s. and china speak to each other? rep. pelosi: president she has always put a sized my -- president xi has always criticized my criticism of him. i had been outspoken about china-u.s. relations and with a love for china, with a love for the chinese people. when i was a little girl, they said if you dug a hole deep enough in the sand, you would reach china so we thought we were all connected. it is not with any dislike for

the chinese or the chinese people. it is about what a genocide of the uighurs, oppression of democracy in taiwan while promising to systems one country, the threat to democracy. francine: what do you think will happen with taiwan? rep. pelosi: we recognize china. our visit did nothing to alter that. we have laws that govern our relationship with china and taiwan, which are very specific. we are committed to helping taiwan defend itself, should they be attacked. we do not went any change in status unless it would be done

peacefully, but no aggression from either side. francine: we are seeing a downturn in terms of the economy in china, which could impact the rest of the world. do think president xi is losing control of it? rep. pelosi: we end other countries decided to ride this tiger -- we and other countries decided to ride this tiger. we bought everything they could sell. when their economy is in trouble, it has an impact on us, surprise, surprise. we do not want any country to suffer economically, because people suffer economically. it is a centralized economy. i ist a one-man show. it isn't anything about values, governance, integrity, certainly

nothing to do with democratic freedoms. i'm not even talking about democracy. we are talking about establishment democracy. it is pretty complete in terms of xi. he is a step backward from president hu, by the way. francine: how do you read that? rep. pelosi: we do not wish a failing economy on anyone, but we do not say "oh my gosh." some people have an attitude, i profited from it then, but it was worth it to me to go along with the whole china thing. money has been a sad factor in this because from the start corporate america just said "we do not care about human rights." i don't think they mostly ever have. they do not care about human

rights, and the security pieces they should have. on the trade stuff, most small businesses who would want to trade to china were completely cut out because the chinese said if you want to sell to us you must manufacture here, and if you manufacture here, we want to see your designs, and if we have your designs we don't need you anymore, and by the way you are not selling here. you can compete with us in the global market. francine: up next, nancy pelosi on why artificial intelligence cannot be a free-for-all. rep. pelosi: we need guardrails, standards and the rest so that this double-edged sword does not do harm, but instead does good. ♪

spend too much. i come from an area that is very, shall we say, technologically on the move. every year since i have been in office, they have said to me "y ou ain't seen nothing yet." francine: in terms of ai or technology? rep. pelosi: ai is a two-edged sword. that is in my district, san francisco. the people i know who are working in it who care about our country know that it is a double-edged sword. we need guardrails. we need standards and the rest so that this double-edged sword does not do harm, but instead does good, and it can do some good. right now we have a strike in the creativity industry, writers, actors and the rest, and there has to be respect for

the creativity that they have. ai could have an impact on that and we have to recognize that, write laws to respect that. in our constitution, we have respect for copyright. francine: regulate ai? and social media? rep. pelosi: social media has been a double-edged sword. it has done tremendous damage, while it has done tremendous good. that is sad. who would want to reverse the ability to have health, technology, education, commerce, family communication, and all of the good things that spring from it, while at the same time seeing filthy, dirty stuff being presented to our children and the rest?

there has to be a way for families to know how to protect their children. i myself think there is a regulation in the law that could be changed to protect children. that is an ongoing fight we have with the technology industry. francine: when we talk about leadership, about grooming the next generation, is there someone would pick for president or senator? rep. pelosi: i'm supporting adam schiff for senator from california. we have 40 million people in our state. senator feinstein has been a champion in california and where they are talking about a sold weapon she has been a leader in passing legislation for that, whether you're are talking about protecting our natural resources, water, forests. it is a big state and we need full strength in the senate.

francine: there have been younger democrats saying that the senior senator -- criticizing -- rep. pelosi: people criticize everybody. francine: should they not criticize? rep. pelosi: it is a free world. i can criticize them for criticizing her. she has been a champion. to tell you the truth, over the years there have been many men who have had concerns, and some of them young but nonetheless ill. francine: the big elephant in the room, because there are always rumors that you will end up as ambassador. rep. pelosi: we have an ambassador. francine: will you serve your full-term? rep. pelosi: as congresswoman? positively, no question about that. francine: so you're are not
