if they can get users maybe there's a way to mon tize them. >> "street signs" begins right now. we begin this hour with breaking news. apple holding a big event today. tim cook talking about ipads on the stage. let's get to our josh lipton who's at the event. josh? >> yeah. tim cook was on the stage, he kicked off the conference and teased us and said they had some amazing products, very excited to show us. he's back on stage and just starting to talk about the ipad. we started this 3 1/2 years ago. some people didn't see the need for it. he had some fun, showed some derogatory comments and quotes about the first ipad and said they sold their 170 millionth ipad this month. this is what we're waiting for to get the updates about the ipad, features, price points. we'll bring it to you as the headlines cross. >> we will.
2:01 pm
we'll get back to you shortly. let's bring in our guest and talk about what we can expect here, lindsay, she is editor in chief with c-net reviews, hudson square's dan, has a buy rating on apple and $600 price target and dominic chu and herb greenberg. let's strap ourselves in. lindsay, get to you first of all. there's a difference between what we want and what we get. first of all, what do you want, what are we getting? >> i think everybody is ready for big flu products from apple. i don't think that's going to come right now. what we're looking at in the next few minutes is new i pdas. >> wh-- new ipads. >> what kind of ipads? >> i think this is going to be some incremental change which what is we saw in the fall with the iphone 4s. we're going to be talking about a thinner large ipad, the 10 inch ipad and possibly a new
2:02 pm
retina display, beautiful display ipad mini. there have been rumors about supply issues with that one. we would love to see a lower price point because ipads have consistently been about $100 more than some of their less expensive competitors from google and samsung. >> now, dan, my question i guess is about what this means for apple as a company? the ecosystem. we know that apple's all about creating that customer experience. is there anything they can do or say with regard to product or applications or anything that makes the customers more sticky? >> well, i think that apple's approach has always been about putting software together with hardware in a unique way. make this software free is no different than you always got the operating system free when you bought a new mac, whereas with a pc, microsoft is getting paid separately and so people saying that, you know, they're acting like google but the reality is they still want you to buy their hardware.
2:03 pm
still a premium hardware experience. but rather than having all these other upgrades like a cheap car and you can upgrade it, this is a luxury car and it comes with all the features built in so i think that's the way to look at it. with regard to what they say about the ipads, i think people generally just like with the phone, always say well, it's not, you know, revolutionary, it's just an evolution. i think people always under appreciate how much impact that apple has when they evolution their product and keep improving it. >> no question that the ipad has been nothing short of a phenomena from the day it was first rolled out. i have my ipad 2 or whatever, which ever i have with me, and what's going to prompt me to really want to now upgrade if i don't have to upgrade? if i didn't upgrade last time, you know, the other ipad works so well, so that i think you know -- >> when you a -- growing base of users, you're always catching people at different points in the upgrade. >> good point. >> but what you want to have is
2:04 pm
a lot of people so that you always are catching people. if i didn't upgrade my iphone from the 4 to 4 s i can get the 5, didn't get the 5, i can get the 5s. you want a large enough base you always have people growing into different parts of the upgrade cycle and have people entering that space. that's one of the things i always like to listen to in apple was what's new to mac. >> guys like me -- >> that's the big picture. >> and then guys like me who got my great new mac book pro about three months ago, and now it's outdated because they rolled out a new line of mac book pros but i've have this one another five years as the other. >> the way i look at that, good thing you didn't get one of the books, because at the high end the mac book pro is -- than ultrabooks fully powered. i think it continues to be a good value and they just told you you're going to get the new operating system update for free. i think apple was trying to say
2:05 pm
enter our ecosystem and you keep getting payback from that. pay a premium for the product but we're going to provide you service around that whether the genius part, our software, we're going to provide value if you enter our ecosystem. pulling back a little bit, still, the stock it's up off of its 400 but only 13 times earnings, less than the s&p, basically saying, hey, the market is telling you they're never going to innovate again and maybe at the end of today we have one more thing, maybe the next product event, but i don't think apple is done entering new categories. we haven't seen one since the ipad. tech companies have entered four categories like apple has. i'm convinced they're going to enter a new one. i can't prove it to you but you can't prove the reverse. >> a lot of pressure for them to retain the lead in the tablet category. they had about 33% of the global tablet market at the end of the second quarter followed by
2:06 pm
samsung with 19% and others making up about 5% each and then you have nokia coming out with its first tablet. this is a crowded space. lindh circumstance is apple cementing itself as the leader in this category? >> i think that apple will stay the leader in the category for some time. apple has a hold on the operating system. we heard tim cook talk about how many installs of ios 7 there are around 60% of all their devices right now and people are really comfortable with that. when we think about buying a new ipad, buying one for the holidays that seems comfortable and seems nice. i do think that apple has a challenge to innovate and we may be looking at some new colors in the next few minutes, there have been rumors of keyboard covers which is funny because apple's been taking some pot shots at competition like microsoft for having their sort of hybrid tablet computer confusing experience. so i think that there's a lot of room for growth and apple could
2:07 pm
catch up and just maintain its lead by doing something that's a little bit interesting right now. >> lindsay, so people go to a lot of viewers, a lot of readers go to sites like yours and people like you to find out whether or not this device is worth buying. hypothetically what does apple say that gets you to give it a glaring review or a -- >> dom, mind if i jump in here. i believe that apple is introducing the version of the ipad. straight back to josh lipton at the event. josh? >> yeah. phil schiller is actually on the stage. he's the senior vice president of marketing over at apple. he's just beginning to introduce a new ipad, looks like the ipad mini but full size. the name is the ipad air. just getting the headlines and we will bring you more details as we get them. back to you. >> ipad air. that's what we know. thank you so much for that. let's get back to this and talk about the ipad air. we don't know exactly what the details are but let's go back to that comment what does the ipad
2:08 pm
air have to do to make you give it a glaring review? what does it have to do to give its seal of approval on your side of things? >> well, i think it has to be the fit and finish has to be superior. i don't expect that the pricing will be rock bottom because that's just not apple's way. and they're giving away such -- so much free software right now. what i'm hearing right this minute is that the air is much, much thinner and probably has that sort of beautiful thin back and edge that the ipad mini has. i think that will go a long way toward earning it a place in people's homes and having it be something people want to carry about. tablets especially large ones, can be kind of chunky if you're juggling them on your lap. i think the speed, the battery life, and the form factor are huge parts of this. >> we're getting more details about the ipad air. 9.7 inch retina display, apparently 43% thinner. dan, what do you think of this?
2:09 pm
>> yeah. i mean it sounds fantastic but again, i think it's just a matter of, you know, where you catch people on thei upgrade curve. i don't think it makes people who bought last year upgrade. i think we'll continue to see that lead that apple maintains. at some point other people will have to get better at doing this. we haven't seen it yet. the interesting thing is that, you know, taking a step back is last year this time, they introduced new product in every single one of their categories and we're kind of seeing that this year. >> hold that right there. straight back to the event. josh, what more do you have for us? >> yeah. more details here about the ipad air coming out. it's thinner about 20% thinner, also lighter. the air is about 1 pound, versus the other older ipad, 1.4 pounds. according to phil schiller the lightest full-size tablet in the world. guys, back to you. >> lightest full-sized tablet in
2:10 pm
the world. okay. that sounds pretty good. like the kind of thing you can shove in your purse and off you go. dan, i would like to ask you about something that lindsay brought up a moment ago that is that apple is increasingly giving things away for free. giving software away for free. what do you think about that strate strategy? >> again, as i said earlier, they actually are always given away software for free. the operating system always came with a mac and the fact that they're making the upgrades for that free, the incremental thing around having pages and numbers, i think is very helpful, but again, i look at it as you're buying a premium priced product and getting a lot of services around that and i think that's sort of -- sort of compare this like the way an audi or mercedes price is. there's not a whole lot -- they don't sell it with plastic seats. you get that experience when you gets the car and i think that's where apple was kind of doing here. so the question is, you know, might we see some impact on
2:11 pm
margins which has been a big issue for investors. it stabilized last quarter guidance they gave. going to be a high-end of the range. but, you know, software, of course, is a very high margin product so the fact that they're rolling that into the premium hardware makes it a little harder for them to grow margins again but i think what they're trying to say is we're going to take share, grow the base and keep having that more and more people who are in the upgrade cycle every single year. i think that -- >> okay. let's take a look at some of the video of schiller unveiling the new ipad air. we've got it for you. let's bring it up and take a look at this. there we go. apparently ten hours of battery life, hearing it's 9.7 inch display, 43% thinner, not only lighter -- oh. okay. white, gray and black. okay. that's kind of interesting. >> options are a good thing.
2:12 pm
>> like the 5s, which is gold, gray and silver. $499 is price. what do you make of the price? $499. >> that sounds consistent where they've priced products before. they're not trying to be too much more aggressive on their high-end product which is the full size. i think that's positive for the margin discussion i was starting to have earlier. but, you know, we'll see. one interesting thing about how they price the 5s and 5c, more people want the expensive product. that's also very helpful. >> they're rolling out the new products, i've been trying to get a 5s since it's been introduced, still a tricky thing do. they haven't rolled that out. when are these products going to be available? is this a game they're playing? it's not necessarily the best strategy after a while because it's sort of, you know, it's something -- i know i'm being gamed. >> yeah.
2:13 pm
>> can i get in? >> lindsay. >> generally with products like this are being announced they come on to the market a couple weeks later. >> sorry. i'm going to jump in here because we're getting more details in terms of the pricing. we said it was going to be at $499. and dan, you were saying that helps to satisfy some of your margin concerns. but that's for the 16 gig version. josh, let's get some more details on what you're hearing on this. >> so far we know it's lighter, we know it's thinner, running a 7, eight times faster than the first ipad. you guys talked about price. you were asking about launch. the ipad air will launch november 1st. and in china among the first countries. back to you. >> oh. china among the first countries. okay. . they got to get their china strategy right and make sure they're a hit in that country as well. >> thank you for joining us. we have a lot more coming your way on this. thanks for your commenta tare.

what we've been hearing at apple, currently sitting at $521, about $1 or so lower than that just before we heard about the ipad air. this is the new ipad they've just unveiled at the event, 43% thinner, for the 16 gig version $499 and going to be shipping on november 1st, silver, white, gray and black. also as i am currently speaking i believe up there on the stage, we're getting the unveiling of the ipad mini and as soon as we get more details you can bet your bottom dollar we will bring them to you. why don't we check out what's happening with netflix. this stock is getting absolutely whacked. up as much as 10% after reporting a strong quarter.
