gt-3. a serious fire risk there, phil ba lowe live in chicago. tell us about it. >> reporter: doesn't happen often. when a company says stop driving immediately, people take notice. the reason why -- look at these pictures. one of two fires involving a 2014 model 911 gt-3. the porsche company is investigating. it happened earlier in germany. porsche says the vehicles caught fire. porsche decided to inspect all 785 delivered vehicles worldwide. no traffic accident, no personal injury. internal studies to determine the cause of the engine damage have not been completed yet. as porsche mentioned, it has told 785 of the 2014 model year, 911 gt-3s. 408 sold here in the u.s.

porsche told the 408 own park it, don't drive it. by the way, the porsche 911 gt-3 starts at $139,000. look at volkswagen, parent of porsche, sales up more than 20% easily outpacing the market. a company doing very well over the last couple are years here in the united states. kayla? >> phil, an expensive car and expensive problem. thank you for bringing that to us. a check on the markets. despite weak philly data, netting with the negative early in trading. now the dow is up 111 points. s&p up bein 11. nasdaq fairly strong. and the small cap russell 2000 up by nine points. elsewhere in the market, movers. back to headquarters for dominic chu and a market flash? dom. >> check out public service enterprise group. a leading gainer in the s&p 500. a northern new jersey based utility company that's soaring after reporting better than expected fourth quarter profits.

yield above 4%. i can't remember the last time you saw this pap nice move for a utility company in today's market. back to you, kayla. >> dom, thanks. another big story today, real estate. forget the cold and snow still on the ground. for house, it's all about spring. a real battle shaping up in the secretarier over a fordability. that's got the bulls and bears big in. diana olick over to you. >> reporter: kayla, all based and what some call affordability shock in 2014. home prices shot up dramatically last year as did mortgage rates. as buyers come out of hiding into the spring market, finding it more expensive. how much? 21% according to be online sales and analytic company. looked at median priced home, 20% down, 30-year fix. 10% rise in prices and rates from 3.5% to 4.5%, the payment from $714 a month to $865 a

month. some markets are seeing a much steeper jump in monthly payments in the 50% range. of course, those counties are in california, michigan and nevada. we've seen home sales nationwide down for four straight months, and price gains are easing a bit up to 0.2 percent sequencetially. the bulls blame it on the weather. bears saying it's weaker affordability. that's why california is seeing such a huge drop in sales. down nearly 14% from a year ago according to the california realtors association. so on the bull side, zillow is reporting a rise in inventory. in 22 out of the nations largest housing markets, the inventory is much needed heading into spring, but remains to the seen again if it will be enough. we have so much more of this online realty check it out. >> diana olick reporting. earning season nearing an end today with walmart's report. it's the granddaddy of

retailers. look at shares. now down $1.34 at $73.51. the world's biggest retailer earned $1.60 a share, down 7 cents a share from a year ago. a profit forecast that was lower than wall street was hoping for. walmart didn't hit that triple threat, or the hat trick, and neither did 492 other companies in the s&p 500. seema mody is looking at the eight that beat on earnings, guidance and estimates. >> that's right. the triple threat, tyler. there are eight companies that have made that list, according to facts that three are repeats from last quarter. netflix, red hat and lam recertain. all three tech names outperforming the s&p 500 the past three months. new companies that made the list include f5 networks, offset competition, going forward, security the biggest growth

23 y if you look at companies out there doing well now, check out some of these names here. when it comes to at least the overall technology sector, there are some pretty interesting moves. there are three specific subcomponents in terms of the overall picture for this company. in the tech sector. it's consumer -- communications equipment, rather. electrical equipment and instruments around net software and services. the three best performing subindustry groups within technology. te technology is a huge umbrella. these three have the overallperformance the better picture overall. the ones outperforming. look at some of these. s&p communications. wireless technology company, check out the big names. they are names we've heard about before. names like the ciscos of the world. harris communications. the juniper networks are big. others outparning as well.

think about the other equipment-type electrical componentmakers. up 2%. communications company, again, year to date. overall, check out what's happen wig the other subsector, if you will overall. electrical equipment up 5% year to date. companies you know about as well. think about companies that make electrical components or the products that go into them. big as well. corning on the glass side of things. think about other companies as well in terms of the internet software and services side of the business. those companies as well doing very well, because facebook. one of those companies we're talking about all day today, part of that internet service, and equipment side of things. again, there are a lot of industry groups and stay tuned, because coming up on "street signs" we're going to dig a little deeper into that internet software services side of things. >> it's not sufficient to say i'm buying tech. >> because there's so many. >> you're doing better by knowing the subsectors in the individual names. >> some outperform a lot more

than others. >> thank you very much, dom mik choo. kayla? staying in tech, the big deal of the day, week and year probably the decade. facebook buying whats app for $16 billion. bringing you in for a second for discussion, but reporting on the new billionaires. john's take on whether they left it because it was corporate, may viewed at sellouts. interesting debate. julia you this is really a popular product nasly, but overnight, people here in america are wondering what is whats app? >> well kay ra, right. whats app the leading app around the world and ceo mark zuckerberg says its appeal comes down to the scale. with whats app, facebook becomes the biggest single messaging service in the world. whats app handled text messages and the entire $100 billion text messages business. 450 million monthly active user and unusually high engagement.

70% of users use the service daily with a record breaking growth rate. doubled users in the past year and particularly popular overseas. the app allows users to send text messages, photos and individual joe to anyone else with an app without paying carrier textor fees. free the first year and charges 99 cents annually. no word how many users pay and does not include ads. zuckerberg says there are no plans to change that. zuckerberg said in a conference call pe expect it's company to hit 1 billion users in a few years and that people will be happy to pay for the service. kayla? >> julia, a popular product. i used it when i lived in london. not as much here. no doubt, it has a lot of loyal users in that base. josh lipton, in the hometown of mountainview. about 55 employees at this company, break it down evenly, 349 million dollars apiece, all of a sudden. who are they? >> yeah, well, these guys, kayla, are now silicon valley's

newest billionaires. the founders include jan koum, a 40% stake in the company joining facebook's board. those who know him say it was his experience growing up in calm mist r communist ukraine. mun cases that wasn't bugged. as a teenager after arriving here he lived on food stamps but wanted to stay in touch with family in ukraine. that was the motivation to build the service. overnight in the neighborhood of eric schmidt, $8 billion, and his partner employee 44 at yahoo! where he worked on advertising, shopping and travel according to wired. he actually posted on twitter that facebook turned him down for a job. he went on to co-found whatsapp. and a final winner we want to mention, sequoia capital, jim,

charring an annual fee. >> interesting when you see mark zuckerberg making all of these deals. in the olden days when he would buy the smaller start-ups, integrate them right way. instagram, a stand alone business. whatsapp possible stand alone business. do you view zuckerberg at the new rollout mogul a la -- >> in facebook's earnings announced three weeks ago, zuckerberg laid out a new vision for the company. instead of having it be all about the facebook product, he said they're moving to a world where it's more of a portfolio of apps. the core business and the facebook messenger, also instagram and not interested in rolling instagram in with everything else. they want to keep it as a separate stand-alone app. this acquisition fits into that strategy. they want to let the business operate separately and obviously advantages to working together, but the more they can allow it

declared in ukraine nap is over. unconfirmed reports that 70 protesters may have been gunned down by police in kiev today with 500 or more injured. the violence between supporters of russia and those who want to have closer ties to europe have spiraled out of control in the past several days, fanned that "new york times" vort correct, and 70 people were killed there today, that would make this by far the deadliest day of clashes so far. the russian stock market was down again today, in part because of the violence in ukraine, but it didn't fall as hard as it did yesterday. additionally, dow jones reports eu ministers approved sanctions on ukraine. a ban of visas and asset freezes. what horrible images these are. warning airlines over a new shoe bomber threat. justice correspondent pete

williams is on the beat. >> reporter: this is based on new intelligence renewed chatter about trying to attack passengers flights using explosives hidden in shoes. this warning applies to airlines that have flights directly from airports overseas to the united states. homeland security is directing them to run the shoes worn by passengers through x-ray machines and shoes in carry-on bag, too, and they're advising them to use explosive trace detective swabs on shoes, too. officials say there is no indication of a specific plot and that the threat information is not specific about any particular airline or country of origin or time frame. this is a general warn, authorities say, passed on out of an abundance of caution, and because it affects only flights from overseas to the u.s., there is no plan now, they say, to change security procedures here at home on the thousands of domestic flights. >> pete williams reporting. nbc news. thank you. >> reporter: you bet. >> kayla, to you.

"travel & leisure" reporter simon hobbs is with us. stock up 17% in just six months. quite an amazing ride for that company. simon, take it away. >> hey, klayla. mid-scale hotels, half a million hotel rooms and he really knows what's going on in the economy. steve, welcome to the show. >> thank you so much. >> a big discussion where we are in the economy and weather-related effects. what are you seeing at the moment? >> actually after the government shutdown which slowed us down and i think shook people's confidence, we saw december starting to come back. what's occurred now is, we are a lot of roadside hotels. we're a lot of other hotels as well. but what happens in a, where you have bad weather is, those hotels actually become refuge for a lot of the customers. we try to take care of them. actually, our hotels have been very full, the first couple months of the year, very strong. we're expecting a strong year. >> overall you expect what to

happen say in the second half of the year? >> we expect it to build and we're expecting the year to be significantly higher than last year. demand is supposed to build 2% and i think we're going to be sort of in that 4% to 6% rev par level, and looking for a strong year. >> today's a big day for technology with the facebook whatsapp deal. you would like feel think of you as a tech incubator. you've taken the booking system, the management system, and you kind of are separating it off and building it and investing in it. it's called skytouch, and many analysts prefer that you weren't spending so much money on it? >> they are. we talk to them a lot on our earnings call about it. the great thing about this opportunity, we have an existing business than very strong. we're attracting a lot of interest. and we think that this is going to be very profitable enterprise for us in the mid-term. we've got a lot of folks that we're signing up to do. we've announced we're going to do it, additional $5 million in revenue on a run rate this your and we're saying we're going to be profitable mid-term.

welcome back to "power lunch." i'm john harwood in washington. expecting president obama will not include in his budget which comes out in a few days a proposal advanced in the past to change the inflation adjustments for social security. it's something republicans sought. the president put in his budget last year as way to lure republicans into negotiations for a big deal nap didn't happen. we had a small deal and now there's calm in the budget waters, and the president's not repeating this offer. this is something that republicans expected to happen, and we'll see whether or not throughout the rest of the obama presidency we get any sort of resumption of grand bargain talks. now we go a market flash from dominic chu. >> thanks, john harwood. check out what's happening with directv. the nation's largest satellite tv company. stock up 3% reporting fwhaernt expected four quarter profits and sales as it made much more from each subscriber in the united states. it also authorized as 3ds.5

kayla? >> all right. ty, near the high of the day for all three indices. bob pisani, what's moving? >> volume on the light side. the winners. all throughout the year, gold miners, up double digits. biotech, up double digits. big phrma stocks up. leading. airline and defense stocks up to the mid to high single digits by and large and also leading. we're seeing today a continuation of the leadership trends we've seen since the beginning of the year. how about retail earnings? walmart had disappointing guidance overall but not dramatically killing a lot of other stores. target'salities on the down side. yesterday i said, if you want to watch for people who might have disappointments outside of walmart, look for ross stores and t.j. maxx. you can see, that's not being affected now. after the close, kayla, we're going to get nordstrom.

this is going to about very interesting issue. nordstrom basically had implied in-line plan for december, but haven't said anything about january. i wouldn't be surprised to see january very disappointing or below planned for them, and i think that's going to be the first big high-end retailer commenting on this tonight. >> it has an interesting demographic. it caters to a little more of that upper middle class shopper, where we don't know exactly how they'll spend this quarter? >> right. the problem is, we don't know if -- look, if it's really weather, they'll be affected high-end shoppers as well. what we don't know is, how much the weather is the issue, and that's why i look today at cons, a retailer in the south. not as much of a weather issue but said 2014 would be weak because electronic sales being weak perp that's not a weather issue as all. trying to sort it out. >> that after the bell, bob. thanks. meanwhile, uptown to the nasdaq. seema mody following big movers there. >> facebook, the main story here making its biggest acquisition

ever. shares down about 2% now staging a comeback. skeptics on the street citing valuation, and down grading facebook from equal weight to overweight. you can see facebook shares underperforming in the social media space. twit herbs pandora, yelp and groupon up on the day. groupon after the bell, mobile base sales one metric analysts will have their eye on. watch out for that, and blackberry higher on news of the snapchat deal. this acquisition sets up blackberry messenger as close second for a potential acquisition. on the down side, look at apple. shares lower after barclays down graded the stock. analysts say we couldn't quite bring ourselves to use smart watches or tvs as reasons to raise numbers nor fully convinced that these products can move the needle. still speculation or concern on werther the wearable text base
