>> he shares my name. to have the company stock places soaring. i want to know what the mass market appeal is. they're coming out with a model x soon. once i can get my toddler in there and throw some cheerio's around, i'll give you a better idea. >> thank you for being here. now, it's time for "fast money." melissa lee and the gang. >> "fast money" starts right now. at the nasdaq market site in new york's times square. the s&p 500 closing at a record high today, along with the russel 2000. but it is apple that caught our eye in today's trading session. that went up 2% ahead of tomorrow's shareholder meeting. institutional investors are getting out of the stock. and relative to apple's weight on the s&p 500, the weighting and institutional money manages portfolios are lower than that. is that optimistic? maybe the portfolio investors
5:01 pm
have to buy apple? >> that's the implication. you look at apple. and you look at the s&p 500. which would you rather own? an asset that is at all-time highs. questionable valuations. or apple, which has bounced off of 515, has an activist investor in there, a meeting coming up tomorrow and potential catalyst coming over the next six months. i think at 526, you can certainly buy apple right here. use 515 as your stop. and i think you can be happy. >> should we assume that something will happen from the shareholder meeting? they're they're going to increase their buyback or dividend? is that priced in? >> today's action tells, if you increase the dividend, there it is. let's be clear on apple. this is not a broken company. this is a stalled growth stock. are you going to get to a place where you see the new revenue driver? 550 million customers globally who are intensely loyal to a company that i think will begin to give them what they want. it's not going to happen overnight. i'm not expecting anything
5:02 pm
tomorrow. but from a traders' perspective, look at the ranges on this stock. somewhere around 495, you have a very clear place to stop yourself out. you raid up to 525, and it's a clearer question. there's probably about a 10% chance you trade the stock in. >> i've had the stock for a very short time. >> how long? >> years. at a stupid level. it doesn't even matter. the big question is, would i buy it now? i would. i would add to it if it bulls back to the 495 area. i don't know if we'll see that. what happened when they dropped the 8% a couple of weeks ago, that's when tim cook and the guys said we're going to buy back stock. $14 billion worth of stock they bought back. you have the safety net down there. and the idea that institutional ownership, because it's lightened up. maybe they want to get back in. to brian's point, you look at the spyder right now. i'd rather be buying apple right
5:03 pm
here. more upside and catalyst down the road. >> if we believe institutional ownership is a positive thing about the stock, should we be concerned about the stocks that have the overweights? an amazon? qualcomm, microsoft. portfolio managers are heavy on these. >> throw google in there, as well. >> amazon showed its colors. and you see what happened to that stock. anything on a financial engineering front is a good thing. it's about innovation. timmy gave you the levels. we talked last week, week and a half. it traded down 10 bucks, back up. but you have a decent floor to trade against pete's point. and timmy and brian's point. i don't think you get crushed in there. >> if you want to protect yourself, short google, buy apple. >> short google and buy apple. >> let's bring in gene munster, senior research analyst.
5:04 pm
gene, great to see you. in terms of the shareholder meeting, should we be expecting much tomorrow? >> no. i mean, you've touched on this. the investor meetings aren't something there's a lot of news. there's a one in ten chance that peter oppenheimer announces some kind of retirement. but the real substance, this is going to be a forum for the small investor to go there and kind of speak their grievances. that's probably going to be around innovation. >> i want to talk about the notion that apple could unveil a new product and that could be a catalyst. as you point out in your most recent note, new products won't be able to move the needle because of the other products they have. they're such a part of their revenue growth. you say, it could spur some investor optimism in the stock. it sounds like the only hope for apple in terms of moving the needle on the stock is that people are excited about the notion of a product, which may not add to the bottom line.
5:05 pm
>> there's two phases to the stock. the near term, the next 6 to 12 months is on the trade, which is what you're talking about. our opinion is, it's hard to say how much they're going to add. we think it will be about 10% for two product categories. but the bigger impact of the stock is the multiple going up. they get the products in their hands they get a little excited. that's one phase to it. the second is the longer-term growth story. we don't have a ton of visibility on. that's some of the questions that you've been talking about needs to address. >> one of the places that people feel should be investive for these guys because we want to call it a software company, it's a hardware company. but the service side of the business. that's what people want to take this to a higher multiple. do you expect the service side of the business to give anything new or a jump-start to that? >> this year, an outside chance on payments, if you want to put that in services. obviously, mapping and advertising. they haven't done as well and
5:06 pm
have not really produced on that front. that's what investors want to see, sustainability, services like google. that's the wild card, the more substance is on the watch and the tv. that's probably more likely. >> i want to ask you about this notion about institutional underownership. does that matter at this point, when it comes to a name like apple? what is it to say that institutions need to own apple at all? unless, you know, you are an s&p benchmark fund. do they have to buy it? >> it matters if they -- earlier you talked about this being a stalled growth stock. is the growth starts to inch up, inch up. it doesn't have to have a big acceleration, the ownership matters in a big way. those bye side people need to overwait. as i meet with investors, the tone has been, i'm underweight. i don't want to get caught if this starts to take off. so, investors are seeing not so
5:07 pm
patiently, but watching for a chance to buy this. there is money on the sidelines for this. i think they show some reason for optimism and growth, that could have a big impact on the multiple. >> gene, great to speak with you. thanks for your time. gene muenster, piper jaffrey. what's the trade here? let's get back to the notion that underweight could be good for a stock. google is the same, that it's waiting on the s&p 500, relative to how managers are allocating funds. is that a problem? >> google's fairly valued. google is one of the greatest companies in the world. i'd love to own google $200 cheaper. i don't need to own google at almost 30-times earnings. google is trading as the same as baidu. brian makes a very good valuation case. i'm not sure they're apples
5:08 pm
anding and oranges. >> if google is fully owns and overvalued, you make the bet that the money will come out of google. you can do it with any of the ones on the list there. >> tim mentioned fairly valued. it's fairly owned in that the spread between the portfolio and the weight. the biggest spread is with amazon. there's a 2.4% difference between the weighting in amazon and the s&p, versus how much portfolio managers own. could that be a warning? >> the answer is i don't know. you can make any warning sign you want. your downside is probably $15 to $20, max. you know the companies are in there buying back stock. you have carl icahn that could throw a headline out to get this thing going. you probably have sorenson in that same camp. the catalyst can be positive. >> going or he can sound like you sell it? >> absolutely not going to happen. there's no shot of that
5:09 pm
happening. >> the biggest thing that happenle has to do, and tomorrow may be the day to do this, tell us what they're going to do with the cash. i don't want them to buy back shares. i think that's exactly the wrong thing. maybe on the defensive side, then i'm fine with them buying shares. otherwise, let's put the capital to work and make acquisitions. meaningful acquisitions that they're going to hit the bottom line. and cut into some of those. >> what are those? >> there's plenty. you get into the supply chain. there's multiple companies they can purchase and add to them. and they would have plenty of capital on the balance sheet. let's get to dekkers now. got to get to dominic chu. ugh is all you can say this. giving deckers the boot. after-hours trade. it was down 20%. it is down 12% now. you have to know it reported fourth-quarter earnings and sales that beat street expectations. but it's the guidance for the first quarter and a certain
