but a lot more there. >> rangers or kings, murph? >> rangers. >> yeah. good answer. pete? >> devin energy, it is a mike collin favorite. he owns it. that means i need it too. >> kings win. our top story today, welcome, by the way, the auto stocks, huge day for may auto sales. look closely at the stocks in the -- the etf that covers the car industry and what the big surge in sales means for the greater american economy. well, a day after that apple developers conference out in silicon valley, this company is making news again. some in the industry are accusing apple of stealing their ideas. the stock, though, is up. is apple a buy at $635 a share? we'll debate that one. and a new kind of insurance for
1:01 pm
your time. specifically for time wasted by airlines if your flight is late, if your bags don't make it, you get cold hard cash fast. the man behind this company is here this hour. we'll talk all about it. first, though, to sue at the nyse. >> that's a fantastic story. coming up in a little bit. we are going to start out with auto sales today for the month of may. they were very strong. gm, ford, toyota, and honda have all been on the upside. though now honda and first trust global auto, which is the etf that tracks the auto industry, are both on the downside there. phil lebeau is behind the wheel with some of the details on some pretty stellar results, phil. >> much better than expected, sue. you look at the sales numbers for the month of may, almost all of the major automakers beat estimates anywhere between 2 and 5%. couple of numbers stand out here. first of all, general motors, gain of 12.6%. that's almost double what the street was expecting.
1:02 pm
and chrysler at 16.7%. we'll talk about in just a little bit what a wonderful month it was in terms of jeep sales. couple of other thins coming up today. people have been saying what about the recall news? has it slowed down sales for general motors or for ford? ford last week reported more than a million vehicles were going to be recalled as part of some new initiative. well, guess what? those recalls have not slowed down traffic coming into showroom, nor have they hurt sales. in fact, generally speaking on the conference calls today, everybody said, look, the sales are there, so we're not worried about people being deterred because of all of the recall news. also, industry incentives did not goose the numbers in the month of may. they were up about $80 according to ford to an average of $2900. that is generally speaking where it has been for most of the year. so it is not like the auto dealers were goosing the deals at the showroom and saying come here and buy this car, we'll give you $6,000 off. finally, i mentioned chrysler and jeep. what a great month for jeep.
1:03 pm
best monthly sales ever. up 58%. and finally, guys. let's look at the monthly sales piece. this is what people will be focused on. all the way over on the left, 2009, you saw when we were down at $10.4 million, the low for the industry. last year, 15.6. on the right, that's the estimate coming in from chrysler. chrysler says the month of may could be as high as 16.9 million vehicles. sales pace. not the actual sales, but sales pace. generally speaking, everyone saying it is going to be over 16.5. by everybody we're talking about most of the analysts looking at the numbers that have come in so far. the bottom line is this, tyler and sue this is the kind of may that has a lot of people saying, okay, a lot of things helped out here, you had a great holiday and extra weekend, but at the end of the day, you saw strength in the consumer, more strength than people were expecting. >> phil lebeau will hang with us and as we bring in senior economics reporter, steve liesman, to talk about what these car sales numbers mean for
1:04 pm
the broader american economy, and it must be good news. >> couple of things. it is good news. i think we're learning there is more of a weather effect than we thought, certainly in the auto industry. we're getting some of it back. whether or not we get all of it back is unclear. the key so watch, though, is going to be production, okay. we're going to want to engage phil on enveinventories. my read is they're a little bit high. if the sales pace should continue a pace, so to speak, we might get effectively a reduction. that will be bigger numbers for gdp. that's one thing we'll be watching, watching for the revved up production. and finally, i would caution people, this is not the industry. it is in high gear now. it will settle back somewhat smaller than this. we're getting a bounceback. by the way, phil, checking that chrysler number at 69, all i did is put the 10% growth we had year over year on to that number
1:05 pm
a year ago. 15.4, that gives you 16.9. chrysler is not pulling numbers out of a hat. if we do 10% higher than a year ago, that gets us to 16.9. you're right, 16.5 may be a more realistic number. but it is higher than economists had estimated. >> phil, why was ford the low boy in this? >> tough comps compared to last year. that's the biggest issue they're facing. ford gets into a tricky area. they start transitioning on the f series. as they do that transition, to the so-called all aluminum f series, they have to bring down some production. that hasn't kicked in yet. we'll start to see that here in the next couple of months. month to month you got to be careful. >> real quick, the economists that care about production schedules, when would you start eliciting for the automakers ramping up production schedules? >> a couple more months. the average inventory is probably in that upper 60s, maybe 71 for the entire
1:06 pm
industry. it gets down to the low 60s, you might see them say -- >> ramp up production. >> phil, thank you very much. phil lebeau, steve liesman, thank you. >> sue, down to you. >> trading action, downside day on wall street. transports selling off a little bit. dow giving back some strength. we had record closes yesterday, though, and the dow, the s&p and the transports. so perhaps not a surprise and we're transitioning into the summer. >> we had some problems today, though. the problem is what is going on over in europe. europe has been doing well. we had a rough session over in europe, all the major indices on the downside. mario draghi will be speaking on thursday. a lot of high expectations, worry he won't be able to deliver on .expectations. they're expecting not just rate cuts, maybe forms of quantitative easing, bank loans. they'll throw a lot out of this. they expect a lot of support to come in. there is worries he may not be able to deliver on that.
1:07 pm
>> then stubborn in past about moving on. >> it is very complicated over there with the ecb. not the same as our system. many different countries will buy bonds from different countries, corporate bonds. bottom line, it is weakening our market today. they upgraded the materials sector. talked about improved chemical production. a lot of companies are buying back their stock. all on the upside. they up graded the energy sector. consumer discretionary, slower pace of housing activity. i think the data in the last week or so has been better than some of the bears suggested. you see the housing stocks mixed. and financials underweighted this. this is the big surprise here, talk about a flattening yield curb. so interesting call from them today. >> i'll so see you again in a

1:11 pm
that's good news. you should be nervous about stocks but don't throw the baby out with the bath water. >> kenny you think it goes further than just people being nervous. you think it is lack of trust in the market structure. >> there is still that issue, the issue of about people notally showing they trust the et. they don't understand it. you get issues that come up like that, that cause a big stir, people start to pull back. they're not sure. they don't want to be at place that feels leak s like a casino. >> michael to your point about buying stocks you can hold for a long period of time. johnson and johnson and qualcomm is on your sheet. >> johnson & johnson has seen
