tv   Fast Money  CNBC  September 10, 2014 5:00pm-6:01pm EDT

5:00 pm
"fast money" starts now. i'm melissa lee. know your eyes are not deceiving you. for the first time ever guy adami is sitting on the other side of the desk. >> don't say ever. >> first time ever. we'll have the story behind this move coming up. i i'm shocked.
5:01 pm
>> it's a nice story. oils fall. settling at the second lowest level of the year today. this as geouncertainty grows. guy adami, it's crazy. what is going on here? >> oh, hi. i think a lot of people got caught in the brent c.i. spread. i don't want to get to wonky. i think they thought brent would trade at a higher premium. that was the consensus thought a couple of months ago. i think a lot of people are getting blown out of that. i'm not sort of in the camp that this is a supply thing. i think it's more on the demand side of things which to me means the economies are slowly growing which goes back to the matter that doc and i for different reasons think interest rates will go lower. i do think you'll get an
5:02 pm
opportunity to trade these energy stocks on the long side. specifically i think this is overdone. >> yeah. we saw an interesting move. you're pointing this out in terms of how it closed. >> you know, he mentioned exxon. exxon and chevron make up 28% and then there's the drillers. if you look at that chart, it actually spiked in the middle of the day. somebody actually rolled down from the october '95 puts to the october '93 puts. that's some serious premium right there. it's possibly some protection against some of these large integrated names but that reversal to date speaks to a shift in sentiment and it might have been as you head into this speech tonight. you know, these are the sorts of things you want to look for when guy says he thinks exxon'sover done, you want to see the options tivts that's contrary to the price activity. >> is it your assumption the speech will put some bid under brent or t.i. or both? >> they could. it's so oversold.
5:03 pm
at some point it could be sell it. >> you did see persistent weakness in the finals. they all remained week. >> they did. mel, we're the largest consumer of energy in the world and the fact that the united states has, number one, leaned up, has not had as heavy a demand on energy and has also met our demand with our own supply means that there's less demand from around the rest of the world to fill that gap. that's why prices are coming down. so in other words, terrorism in the middle east is a horrible thing but it's not driving prices up. i would take a significant disruption for a significant period of time do that. >> i wondered about the same development. are we starting to see at long last more efficient cars, we're definitely seeing that. more efficient energy combined with more alternative fuels? at some point maybe we're there.
5:04 pm
i don't know. maybe we're there. we're starting to see a much more long-term structural decrease in our demand and as doc says our supply here as well. >> you know, i would add one other thing. mcdonald's made a low. it reversed. when you think about it, these companies have large costs. it's oil. these are the sorts of things as trader that was a massive reversal in mcdonald's today. maybe people think it's as good as it gets here. with that being said, who knows. >> do you like mcdonald's? is that your trade? >> i'll tell you this. it's gotten undersold. to me when you see oil as low as it is and you see the potential for some sort of restructuring, you know that they buy back stock hand over firsst, you probably have a reverse to the upside. >> quickly back to energy, i think that arc, which has been
5:05 pm
low. thing anadarko sets up really, really well right here. >> let's get some more on the weakness we're seeing. dennis, good to see you. >> good to be seen, mel. >> you said in the past to us that you believe the direction would be lower. we're lower, much lower. where do we go from here? >> still lower. there's every reason to believe that it will continue to go so. i think it's both a demand and a supply circumstance. take a look at what's happening. brent -- spot brent is trading almost $5.50 under september futures. there's a huge carry. you've taken it to a contango, a carrying charge. that contango keeps getting wide. you have the kurds with probably 13 or 14 tankers of crude oil
5:06 pm
out on the seas and think an important note the other day is the chinese had rented for all intents and purposes the largest ulcc ultra crude carrier in the world and have simply used it for storage of crude oil, hence you have the carrying charge market occurring in brent and the narrowing. i've said in speech after speech over the course of the last year and half, this is a very esoteric economic statement. there's a gob of crude oil to be found at $115 a barrel. i think we want to find out how much crude oil can be found at $5 a barrel and i guess that's where we're going to go. >> in terms of the president's speech tonight, everybody believes he's going to announce an action where he steps up against isis. is there anything he could say that would put a bid under brent? >> probably not. i really don't think that there shall be. i think it was guy who said unless something terribly
5:07 pm
untoward were to occur in libya, in reahad and in saudi arabia, can't imagine the president going do anything bullish for crude oil. in fact, if he were to do anything -- and i don't think he'll do this. he has the ability to surprise the world and put pressure on the russians by releasing crude oil from the spr. that's not going to happen especially since we've got it under $100 with brent and heading toward $90 with wti. but if he were to make any surprise, that would not be bullish of crude oil that. would obviously be bearish. >> the other is the strength of the dollar. that's the 800-pound gorilla. i know you've been in the weaker yen/dollar camp for a while. obviously that's having some
5:08 pm
effect on this. does it have a reason to continue? >> given the geopolitical circumstances and given the parochial political circumstances prevailing in europe at this point, ie, the scottish vote and the vote in spain, to see them join the fray and start to talk about s separatise separation, you'd see that. why would anybody move money to japan. you have to move money way from japan because the japanese have no choice but to continue the process of devaluation. so dollars, u.s. dollars, canadian dollars, aussie dollars but primarily u.s. dollars are going to be the safest of all harbor and given that our economy is doing better than everyone else's, the dollar has to be strong. >> i need to button this up. do you lean in on crude oil?
5:09 pm
>> you have to be short and brent, it's going continue to lose its premium to wti. we forget except for the last three years, brent has always traded at a 2% to 3% discount. >> thank you. dennis gartman. >> thanks. gasoline prices have been steadily going down. in fact, since memorial day, prices of gasoline, the national average down 6.2%, karen. that gets go a silver lining for the retailers. >> you would hope because they certainly get hit when it goes the other way. thing the back-to-school subpoe season has been good. i really like it here. >> you say you like xom? >> i do. >> but if we go to 85, do you like it then? >> i'm not convinced that's where we're headed, by the way. i understand what dennis is
5:10 pm
saying. i think no correlation whatsoever between jet fuel and energy by and large but the airlines definitely went to this as well. you had a nice names. >> tonight ccnbc will have live coverage of president obama. dr. j. is watching noble energy. >> this one, noble, we had the october 29 calls bought in big numbers today. now does this mean this is going to be pushing back up in the near future? in all likelihood, i believe the answer is yes. this was very unusual activity in this name, much heavier. >> did you get in on it? >> i did. >> got breaking news on the nfl. ray rice controversy. let's send it back to
5:11 pm
headquarters. dom chu. >> we have the "associated press" saying a law enforcement official had sent the ray rice punching video incident to the nfl three months ago. again, the nfl says we have no knowledge of it. we are not aware of anyone who possessed it or saw the video before it was made public on monday. we will look into it. a again, a law enforcement official said the video was sent to the nfl. there was a voice mail message from the number. a female voice responded, saying, you're right, it's terrible. again, the ap story says the nfl knew about it three months ago. the nfl says they have no object of it. they're going look into it. we'll look at into the details
5:12 pm
for now that's the details, back to you. >> dom, thank you. we'll get reaction from suntrust bob peck. it's coming up. and it's not your father's most. the tech giant looking to make waves in the faming industry. we've got the details and the trade. that's next. smart sarah. seeking guidance. just like with your investments. that sets you apart. it does? it does. you're type e*. and seeking another perspective is what type e*s do. oh, and your next handhold... is there. you don't have to go it alone. e*trade gives you the support and guidance to make informed decisions. are you type e*?

extra curricular activities help provide a sense of identity and a path to success. joining the soccer team. getting help with math. going to prom. i want to learn to swim. it's hard to feel normal, when you can't do the normal things. to help, sleep train is collecting donations for the extra activities that, for most kids, are a normal part of growing up. not everyone can be a foster parent... but anyone can help a foster child.
5:15 pm
restoration hardware getting hit into the after hour details. dom. >> the stock is moving lower in the after hours after the company posted waerk than expected second quarter sales as their comparable sales or store sales came in shy of wall street estimates. it also gave a guidance below it. hardware down 4% in the after hours trade. just to give you some reference point, that's about half as many as traded in the entire session. back over to you. >> thanks for that. karen. >> it's scary for both sides. such a high flyer. you get a miss like that, lower earnings, and a contraction in the multiple. however, if you look at the short interest, it's huge. it's scary on either side. i'd stay away. >> what i would add quickly is
5:16 pm
inventories were up 35% year of year. it's not like i'm doing a lot of shopping. >> you're not doing any. >> you've got a lot of sales coming at r.h. in the next couple of months. >> most expemicrosoft expected buy a game. they sold over 50 million copies of the game. i'm going to take a wide guess you hate the idea. >> you may be wrong on this. this stock, it's gaining $80 billion in market cap. >> is it a better performer than apple? >> it is. when you think about it, they have ex-bxbox. it performs very well. they have halo. you bring in mine craft. there's a lot of different platforms you can use it on. to me to spend $2 billion for
5:17 pm
$85 billion, i think it makes sense with a new management in there who wants to do new things so go for it. >> you get users, but the thing is you might alienate the youth who like the minecraft because that's viewed as being at the forefront apparently of indy game development and being independent and the idea of microsoft coming in and buying them could destroy some of the allure. >> if they truly did that. >> that's according to minecraft forum, by the way. seriously. >> look at the assets that microsoft has to commit to it, mel, and the distribution network, their platform through the xbox and so forth. mine kids are watching other kids playing video games now. i mean it's actually, you know, a participation sport that people don't participate in. they're instead watching it like a movie because some of these video games are so compelling. i don't know that mikecraft is
5:18 pm
that particular game but the idea is to grab eye balls. i think it's a good idea. >> you like microsoft, is that the -- >> i love microsoft. as you said it's outperformed apple this year. people say they're not growing. it's growing. they're putting them on the cloud, putting the clouded on your ipads to get word and docs onto your ipad instead of using google that's a plus. >> this doesn't move the needle for microsoft whatsoever. so this is not the reason go out and buy them but i think it makes the current offerings it -- >> games are 8% of the total. next up, google investing in solar, providing 1$145 million o sun edison to help convert a solar power field to a solar plant. >> i love that idea. that's a tiny little blip of something, probably four minutes of revenue for google, and they
5:19 pm
do have a project for renewable energy, but it's more important for, i think, sun edison. i like it here. i think that as we see this whole industry mature and it's really in its infancy right now, we start to see financing available anywhere, that's food f good for them, like that. >> 300% gain in 12 months, would you stay in this? >> karen's been on it. these are difficult names to stay in but they're typically the right one. when you have the wind at your back and seemingly know head wipds are coming you have to stay with the wind. >> next up, a hole, given the recent rally in the stock but the analyst did add it has a positive spin. >> as we eenk talked about it. it's crazy. it will be come mod advertised at some point, but i don't think
5:20 pm
that's happening for six months to a year. didn't get whacked today. and on the other side of that coin, they raised their target price from 46 to 65. that's one of their top picks. you can see where this stock could retrace a little bit. you have to understand it's going be extraordinarily volatile. but this stork has some more upsides. some more blue skies. i'd be more in the stanley camp. >> doc? >> i'm definitely there with you, guy. to a certain extent people are going to be worried about what it might do to their snurj but there are an awful lot of folks who want that, who are reasonable drivers, whether they're truckers, karen or -- >> why did you look at me for truckers? >> i don't know. >> she's definitely not a trucker. i was looking that way for guy. >> throwing everybody off. i think mobileye they're making
5:21 pm
it safer. obviously it translates. the trade-off is they know how you operate your vehicle. some americans in particular won't be that comfortable with that loss of their anonymity. >> their ability to drive? >> yep. >> do you believe that you cannot buy this company at 50 times sales. it doesn't make any sense. giets 11, $12 billion market cap. you may be able to ride the momentum for a while but ultimately this is it. this one doesn't make it. >> all right. >> we should note twitter is falling after the 5% rally. they've been in the debt market for the first time. we'll have the details and the trade coming up, plus, netflix plus bob peck. the man joins us after this.
5:22 pm

5:25 pm
let's bring in suntrust's bob peck with a neutral rating of a price target of $525 which provides a 9% upside when he put the note up. good to see you. >> thanks for having me. >> i want to get to the news in the after hours session. that is twitter. >> it's very shrewd. it's very attractive. we take from our space aol did something similar a couple of weeks ago. you see a high yield rate of 3% to 5% with the hedge they're putting in place. they can probably get it down to 1%. probably a very smart move. i think the question is what do you do with the money. one is you build a war chest. number two is do you buy
5:26 pm
something. flipboards is an interesting concept. twitter was involved in it. there are interesting things that could be done. at minimum it's cheap money. >> this is basically anthony making his first big moves. >> that would be our guess. >> yeah. >> dividend or -- >> nowhere in the near term. they're very much in growth. just building your ebitda margins. they're putting away for a rainy day. >> this is knee-jerk reaction in your view and weakness that should be ignored, looked through, and/or bought? >> what's interesting what they'll do is buy it and put it in stock. we'll see how it trades tomorrow. aol when it did that ended up closing up 1%. >> all right. let's switch gears and talk about netflix. interesting because you still see a 9% upside to the stock.
5:27 pm
a lot of the reasons you give are reasons we see here time and time again about concerns for netflix, the spending on content for instance this year and beyond. but also what i thought was interesting rrk you comfortable with the expectations that you'll meet them but woe done d see much on the upside. >> exactly. we were looking to get more constructive upon a pullback. there's a lot of expectations built in. when you do the math you wonder what the market is assuming. it's fair guess. a healthy guess. it's what we have in our motto. it's going to be difficult to do. >> in your note as well, part of the way you got to 525 price target is you took a look at mature media companies which i think is an interesting way to look at it because i don't think many would think netflix would based on backup of charter communications or disney or
5:28 pm
viacom. >> the reason we put that in, it's growing a little faster, but the way we look at all our companies, we compare it to the universe. so we look at ten different ways or so and we take a meaning of that for central value. >> to you ever see them doing a content acquisition? >> possibly. i think there's a potential there. the more they go out on the content curve, you can have a john carter-type thing or guardians of the galaxy. you don't know. i think as they move further along, they're engaging the early success for that. >> bob, thanks for coming by. bob peck of suntrust, what's the trade here, doc? >> i have not been in the name long or short for a better part of the year, i suppose. down at the 4:30 area or thereabouts i'm sure bob wishes he could be buying it up here too. i think it was great call by him
5:29 pm
but it's just rich for my blood and i haven't seen any unusual activity. >> think about this. we were thinking about twitter, war chest. why wouldn't have you with a stock up here look to raise some money right now because to karen's point maybe there's acquisition as relates to the content. all the stuff that does really well here content-wise, it may not resonate in other regions of the world. they're really going to have to cater. i would be raising cash. >> netflix. >> netflix, yeah. >> do you think they would? >> why shouldn't they. >> tesla did the same thing when the stock was at an all-time high. they raised a ton of cash and it's sitting on the balance sheet. you know what? all things -- listen. at some point these stocks are not going to be trading. they're going to need this cash. >> totally agree. they could do a million bucks. >> feeling good. >> dan agrees with you.
5:30 pm

money." we're live at times square. still time to get out of amazon. dan and dr. j. go head to head. and karen announced her ebay short. find out what she's doing with the stock now. we start off with amazon moving slightly higher after channel advisers said its clients saw 40% year after year for its same story sales. time for street fight. you can grab your phone, tablet, laptop, whatever you've got. log into cnbc.com/votenow.
5:34 pm
we'll have it live across the screen as they vote. you have 90 seconds to kick it off. >> they said same-store sales which is kind of strange for an online store. up big. bernstein prime minister a target of 450 on these guys, dan. i think that's a reasonable target for it, believe it north given it's in the mid-300s gets to those mid-400s. and the bips, i think it's up 200 bips they think is what gross margins are going to be up. another positive. lastly i think that that fire phone was kind of a big nothing, dan, and i don't think it cost them that much but it put them in the press. >> listen, doc, you maked so good points. i would say this. fire phone ultimately when they can't compete they're going to keep it
5:35 pm
out there. i don't think that's a good idea. the company is growing at 20% a clip. they don't make any money of those sales and that's the real issue. i'm not talking about it from a valuation standpoint. right now is from a send meant point. investors have turned their minds about the dpaep and about the stock. listen, i'm a very happy customer. i wouldn't be a happy investor. the last time they've done it they've been disappointed. i think sent meant has shifted. i don't think that is great news either. i think that everything apple announced yesterday is actually bad for amazon. i think most -- >> what about sokolove? >> we have a clock for a reason, guys. sorry. have a clock for the reason. keep on voting out there. we're going to let the rest of the desk weigh in here. >> i'll go on dan's side of things. their last quarter was not good. the operating loss would come in at around 8$800 or so million, o
5:36 pm
the business is now in my opinion deteriorating. it was great story when the momentum was there. doc could wind up being right if they somehow surprise. i don't think that's going to happen. i'll stick with dan. >> clearly on valuation you can't go anywhere but agree with dan. we'll see when alibaba comes out and they circulate a huge scale. >> you agree with dan once again. >> i agree with dan. >> let's close the vote. dan's winning by landslide but that goes to show the momentum and sentiment in the stock is bearish because he was winning from the get-go. >> like i say, i like the gross margin story, i luke the target around i think they get -- that zoek low, that other product is something they could use. >> it's ore. doc, it's over. so we've got another question for you. we switched as you may have know
5:37 pm
itt -- noted, they separated for the street side but should he go reclaim his spot on the other end of the desk where he normally sits. voting starts now and we'll take a break. guy takes the seat america tells him to vote. >> you can vote me off the island. >> that's not an option. the next vote will do that. how would you cast your vote, by the way? >> i'm a creature of habit. folks at home know that. >> tell them what happened. you lost an arm wrestle there. >> i did? >> we're going to move on. when it comes to stocks, bigger is better. will the trend continue? let's bring in neely gilbert, co-founder and portfolio manager. hi, great to see you.
5:38 pm
>> great to see you. >> you think this trend will continue. >> yes, we do. we've developed a proprietary tool to forecast the difference between large stocks and small stocks and starting around the beginning of this year it turned in favor of large, and really we saw a few key reasons for that. the first is valuation. we see that large has outperformed this year. small outperformed large from 2008 to 2013. so small stocks are looking expensive. another reason is momentum. you've got on the one hand the fact that momentum this year has turned in favor of large, but also the longer term multi-year cycle with small having done so well for so long looks to reverse. and finally there's the interest rate environment. as we expect interest rates to begin to pick up, it becomes a
5:39 pm
concern that smaller companies not only tend to be more leverage than larger companies on average but tend to borrow at higher rates and we've seen credit spreads start to widen out this year. >> let's talk about a couple of your picks that you brought along. this was an interesting one. it's got a pretty nice deal. it's got a nice performance, 20% so far. >> that's right. exelon has done well so far this year, but actually if you look back to 2013, it was a pretty contrarian call. exelon is a stock that was trading at close to $200 in 2008 and has traded all the way down to the low 30s now and with that its earnings have come down as power prices came down and we saw at the beginning of 2013 that the management had to cut the dividend. now, for utilities, that is a big decision because so much of the natural shareholder base is focused the dividend base as a
5:40 pm
reason to invest. so when a utility comes under pressure and has to cut the dividend, a lot of the natural share holder base is gone even when the stock starts to recover. so now we see that exelon is starting to recover, but it's still attractively valued at about 13 times earnings and we tlink's still room for upside. >> and you also like wellpoints. >> that's right. it's a health benefits provider, the second largest in the country and the largest under the blue cross/blue sheet brachbld wellpoint is another contrarian call or will have been. it's done quite well so far this year because of the affordable care act. most of wellpoint's customers, they have a large market share in the small group and individual segment of the market and there was a concern that a lot of those small groups and individuals would move over to the affordable care exchange and that wellpoint's participant
5:41 pm
numbers would drop and revenues would drop. but that isn't what's happened. what's happened is they've been able to pick up customers, quite a few, on the exchange, and also expand their business in the medicaid market. and so as opposed to what was expected, we've actually seen a lot of upside to well poipt and we think there's more. >> nili, thanks for stopping by. nili gilbert. karen, you're with molina. >> it's still trachive here. >> guy, where do you trade here? >> i think well point looks great. in terms of the small cap, russell scares me still. it can't get out of its own way. i'm still in the camp that goes town to 108 which will in turn drag the s&p down. still ahead, we hear from t-mobile's ceo how he's taking
5:42 pm
on verizon and sprint. there's still time to vote. we asked if guy adami should get his regular seat back on the other side of the desk. go to cnbc.com/votenow. we'll reveal the results after the break. no, no, no... the scarlet king is lord victor's son!! no don't. i told you! you guys are gonna be so surprised when you watch the finale!!! you're so lucky your car has wi-fi. yeah...i am. equinox from chevrolet... the first and only car company to bring built-in 4g lte wi-fi to cars, trucks and crossovers. i make a lot of purchases foand i get ass. lot in return with ink plus from chase. like 50,000 bonus points when i spent $5,000 in the first 3 months after i opened my account. and i earn 5 times the rewards on internet, phone services and at office supply stores. with ink plus i can choose how to redeem my points.

get his normal seat back at the other end of the desk. the results are in so we going to close the vote. so 30,000 votes were had. >> get out of here. >> 30,000 people weighed in. 61% of you want you to sit on the right-hand side. >> over there. >> so we can do a live switch? >> do it. >> the people have voted. >> the way that america looks at tv would be to their right. he rejoice. creature of habit. >> some semblance of order. >> now we can resume the show. now that we're only nine days away from iphone 6 hitting the shelves, john sat down with apple's ceo. what's the latest? >> he's big on wi-fi and the
