your future. now, becky quick >> we begin with with back-to-school it doesn't mean sitting in the classroom with the teacher and the board. it includes opening a tablet or laptop anywhere. more technology in education, the cover story is log on and learn. school is back in session, but increasingly, more learning is occurring on a screen. 5.8 million college students are taking on-line courses 28% of all u.s. higher education students are enrolled in at least one course on the internet the cost of a college degree keeps climbing, it is bringing world class instruction to millions harvard, m.i.t. and others are opening mooc or massive open online courses one of the broadest and most accessible online learning sites is entirely free in 2006, he up loaded teaching

materials to help his cousin with math homework others saw it and wanted videos on more subjects two years later, he launched the non-profit website it's had more than 1 million views and 56 million registered users worldwide studying anything from calculus to chemistry in 36 languages. joining us is the founder and ceo of the academy great to see you today >> great to be here. >> we are back-to-school as more schools embrace online learning, how are your courses being used in the school with teachers or after school with help for homework >> it's a little of all the above. there's 2 million teachers that use us in some way in the classroom. on top of that, we have 10 million students that use them, a lot are in classrooms as free, personal tutor

there's a lot of home schoolers that use us and adult learners that they want to go back to college or curious about something. >> i'm seeing it with my own kids everybody has to remember what they forgot over the summer. is there anything to do to reverse the summer slide >> keep them learning over the summer especially as you get back into school, use tools like this 20-30 minutes a day. get up to speed and get ahead of the curve. >> is this a situation where you need to be a self-starter and self-learner and somebody who is going to drive themselves to utilize this or if i'm a parent who wants to make sure my parent can do this, i force it down their throat >> if a student is super hungry for it and if they are like that, the tools exist. we see letters from students on kahn academy i'm a parent of younger

children i think it's healthy to give them a healthy push. i tell my children, 20-30 minutes a day. it's more about consistency and doing it regularly they see the games they have and things they thought they weren't good at all of a sudden seem simpler. it's if you were using musical instruments. >> we now how it was started it was about how you started out as a math tutor and helping your cousin, i think it was it grew from there >> yeah. i think we started and my background was in tech and math and found myself working at the hedge fund i was tutoring a cousin and made video and software for them. my cousin is reusing it. i set it up as a non-profit and here we are. >> is math still the most popular subject? >> math is a lot of people perceive kahn

academy as math videos we are more about practice, personalized practice. you can go to kahn academy for history and everything it goes to the college level >> which age group is the biggest growth and the biggest users? >> the biggest growth is in that high school, early college area. students learning math, it might be trig, history that's growing the fastest, at least in english we have a lot of international growth on top of that. >> will there be a kahn academy diploma where you can prove you learned things and will work for employers? >> that's the hope and the goal. our mission statement is free world education for everyone, everywhere it's a way to learn the material to be ready for the world and prove to the world you are ready. we are working with a lot of great organizations that are

rates on a 15-year mortgage 3.08%. mortgage rates are based on the yield of the ten-year treasury bond and the demand for mortgages. amazon is doing shopping of its own. the online giant is looking for a location for the second headquarters in addition to the one in seattle it would create tens of thousands of new jobs in construction and full-time employees and cost amazon $5 billion. if an 18-wheeler isn't hauling a full load, truckers are losing money the same ride sharing technology is helping connect truckers with available space to companies with smaller loads of freight. >> william has been hauling freight with his own semi for 24 years. he started using an app on his smartphone to find shipments in need of a truck. >> it was more manually as far as war a lot of down time

it's a new football season, both college and the nfl are under way. growing concern about concussions and safety continue to surround the sport. this year, a seattle based start up has a new type of helmet. dave is the ceo and co-founder thanks for being here, dave. >> good to be here, becky. >> as soon as i picked this up, i thought, wow, this is heavy. tell us how it is different and protects us. >> it is different if you are used to picking up a bike helmet or ski helmet. for a football helmet, it's normal today's helmets have a hard outer shell. this yields like a car bumper when impacted. >> extra padding and more flexible structure >> that's right. it's like an old carver sus a new car. the old cars from the '50s and '60s had a rigid chassis

>> the idea that it yields is great news you can't necessarily create a helmet ma will protect you from every head injury. what does this do and cut down >> absolutely not claiming it can stop concussions it reduces impact. it finished number one on the performance testing this year. >> this has been used in an nfl game, just past. >> the season opener, the chiefs against the patriots a dozen of the chiefs were wearing it >> what have the reactions been from that game and where you tested it? >> they say two things, it feels different in a collision they are not feeling the severity of the impact as much they are not having white out moments or seeing stars, which

is good. they appreciate the wider field of view. that's both a safety and performance feature. russell wilson, for example is in the helmet for the seahawks he likes that he can see the whole field. less likely to be blind sided. a helmet alone is not going to help everything. we are hopeful this is going to make a big difference. >> nfl teams, how many are use zing it? >> half of the nfl teams purchased it 70 nfl players are using it to date it's terrific for the first year >> this is more expensive. it costs $1500 versus the $400 of a standard helmet, is that correct? >> yes our engineering team is working on additional helmets for high school and youth players that are less expensive, but optimized being lighter and smaller. >> how soon could we see that?

it's a sort of airbnb for cars and lets you rent your car when you are not using it. the business is growing so fast that auto makers from gm are taking notice. we have more >> reporter: when brian bought his tesla, he took out a loan with a monthly payment of $1500. too much to handle not to rose who cut that cost by renting out his tesla a few days a month tototal strangers. >> i have been renting it out. 60 trips over two years. it's basically helped pay off all the payments or deappreciate nation on it >> reporter: rose rents out his tesla through a care share company that features 160,000

about experience the way you boost the senses in some way for us, we said there's so many efficiencies in e-commerce, how do we bring it into the stores so it feels like rebecca is always there or the lighting is approximated in the store or you get recommendations pertinent to what you brought in or self-checkout. >> sure. >> on the experience side, we want to make our stores a hub for community. we host chats and art openings entrepreneurs that want to launch something >> we host the great events in the store and they go out through digital and social and the e-commerce starts driving as well it's like the minievent becomes a mack kro moment. >> how do you design for millennials? is it different?
