breaking news out of las vegas. at least 20 people are dead and more than 100 others are injured following a shooting at a country music festival it happened overnight near the mandole bay casino witnesses saw muzzle flashes coming from one of the upper floors and the sound of automatic gunfire. the shooter is dead and they were searching their university center they said some flights were

diverted due to the shooting >> clearly a developing story we'll keep a close eye on. the first trading day of october. we just finished the third quarter which was positive basically for asset classes across the board, stocks, bonds, commodities as well. s&p and nasdaq closing at record highs on friday. here on monday we're setting up for potentially a positive session with the dow up 20 points s&p 500 higher by around 2 points as well technology the standout in the third quarter gaining around 8%. switching focus to bonds where yields have been on the rise, let's take a look at where the ten year yield has been trading at at 2.35 feet on friday economic data.

that's the jobs report the question is whether the fed will raise rates before year's end. markets are all closed for holidays gains for japan and also for australia for the month last month. japan was up, hong kong and shanghai down. european trade is up for the most part apart from the spanish index which is down because of those clashes over the weekend with that referendum not happening, not legal huge gains for germany for the month last month up 6.4% we did have the u.k. down, in fact, but for the quarter as a whole it was gains across the board as it was in the u.s. >> let's take a look at broader markets. oil had a positive third quarter

crude is trading lower, $51.45 ice brent crude at 56.62 switching focus to currencies. that was a very interesting topic when looking at thirteenth third quarter. the euro had fine, the u.s. dollar at 112 against the japanese yen. >> the weakness is the most important part is it bounces back by the end of the quarter we have seen it strengthen. it's continuing in a market fashion so the dollar continuing that trend in the last week. gold prices down nearly a percent last week and down a little bit as well today at $12.76. the eurozone jobless for august, 9.1% which is the same as it was

voters in in small groups, protecting the entryways of the 2300 designated polling stations, just a fraction were, indeed, shut down by the spanish government the catalon government said this is a voice they've earned the right for independence he stopped short of calling for independence the televised address said this was unacceptable the vote was illegal and led a path to nowhere. there's really a clash being set up between the catalan address they can using the constitution of spain claim this vote is illegal. they can arrest them that would increase tensions even more over the course of what we saw sunday. >> willem, thank you very much for that insight

has already said that this is illegal. spanish bank's constitutional court ruled this is that an tutly binding vote 100% turnout would have given him extra moral credibility. the bigger question is how the catalan government choose to use this vote now potentially declaring unilateral independence or not. >> that seems to be the next question, what steps the catalan government will take they, of course, voted in favor of independence. if they do pick this next step of unilateral independence, and change the.

>> well, absolutely. they have two options. they have to claim that catalonia is a de facto entity if that happens, that would create an unprecedented constitutional crisis in spain with rohoy having to use article 1.555 and end catalonia and seize i have they may say we have the right to independence now but we're now going to start a period of consultation with the spanish government and with the eu about how best to bring that about that would keep the fires of the

the latest numbers from las vegas police, more than 20 killed, more than 100 injured. many of those in critical condition. this all happened at what was the end of a three day music festival jason aldean was on stage. witnesses, people at the concert say they heard hundreds of rounds fired from what sounted like automatic weapons from before los angeles police have killed a gunman in the oomph this outdoor music venue. they are telling us that they are searching for a person of interest a second person not described as the shooter or someone who was there at the time but a person of interest. a local resident, mary lee danley, police are trying to track her down right now as they

continue this investigation. at the scene, we know that ambulances continue to rush in and out leaving with lights and sirens which means they are transporting victims this is very active. the investigation just beginning here and what police are stressing is not to jump to any conclusions at this point. they're trying to work through what's happened here they're asking everyone to stay away from the strip at this point. i think that will be the case for quite son time. >> again, you were saying not more than 20 are dead. one of the gunmen has been shot. any idea if there's more than one shooter involved in this attack i know it's still very early we tried to learn more about the details surrounding this attack. the motive used by this gunman. >> yeah, they won't say anything about the gunman investigators are saying they're not releasing his name, not releasing any thought of a motive because they're not there yet. this is the beginning of a long

the bond market, 2.35% yeah, still holding on the level. that's the yield on the ten year economic data this week will be on the manufacturing front on thursday a speech from janet yellen. >> gains for the last month in asia more mixed. japan was higher but hong kong and shanghai were down you have quite a lot of the chinese related markets, hong kong and shanghai. australia having moved up. it was a bit more mixed. for the quarter as a whole, folks across the board as it was in the states. this morning we have gains across the board apart from spain of course following those violent clashes over the weekend. between national police and voters in barcelona.

>> turning our attention to commodities where oil had a strong quarter brent gaining 20 perfection percent in the third quarter here on monday, slightly lower $59.56 lower by .3% if you average it take a look at the currencies. the longest time the collar has been a weaker currency we started to see a rebound in september. the question is whether that trend will continue. the euro noticeably lower at 1.17 against the dollar where many say that's related to what's going on in taking a look at gold. lower here by $9 in early trade. in tech news, google is

the dow 2 and a half joining us is the investment strategist at pnc accent management group, bill thank you for joining us before we get to the markets, it's the biggest story of the quarter, the turn around that we saw in the dollar by the final month breaking that six-month losing streak. in fact, ending the month last month higher for the dollar for the first time in six. >> yeah. i mean, i think finally the market i guess heard the federal reserve that they were serious about raising rates. certainly some of the speeches lately would lead you in the market to price it in that we're going to price it in

the euro, not much of a chance this year. that's part of what made the differential. >> in terms of equities, teg nothing doing well financials what are you expecting in the fourth quarter a continuation or a reversal of some of these trends >> we still like technology and financials, particularly the technology looks like we'll have another really nice quarter of earnings i think financials, not so much on the earnings side yet i think that's a couple places financials were kind of dormant for a while. that's a bit of a reversal i think the one thing to think about is probably to expect -- and this is a fearless workout on some of the measures it's one of the lowest volatility years i'm probably not sticking my neck out too far

global central banks are trying to move away >> bill, does that make it attractive, therefore, to buy protection and certain protection measures are cheaper than they might otherwise be >> it could be it's really hard every time i look at some of the protection things, the cost is relatively high versus, say, what you could earn elsewhere. the percentage of what you think you're going to earn, it becomes a difficult numbers game we obviously look at it at times where we think, you know, it makes sense. i think part of the thing to keep in mind is my reason for talking about the volatility people get used to the current situation and i think that's probably going to change at some point. you have to get yourself mentally around that that we'll see some more jumping around here i don't know how quick it will be one of the things holding down volatility is the fact that the global economy is better

you see more numbers this morning in terms of the pmis and out of japan showing that as still the back drop. >> bill, buy backs play a critical role. does that complicate company's share buy back plans >> yeah. i mean, some of them are obviously on i'll call it auto pilot in terms of buying back. certainly at least the numbers i've seen looking for that to come down a bit. i guess i don't know it's the marginal reason why stocks go up helped earnings because of the buy back, it should in fact help boost the earnings if we're still having an economy getting better that's going to help earnings. to me earnings are what will end up mattering and at least so far we look pretty good there. bill stone, thank you for joining us today the nobel peace prize for medicine
