before christmas, coinbase spending trading everything from bitcoin, bitcoin cash, ethereum, it's all getting slammed. crypto stocks taking it on the chin, square, overstock, the cme, even riot blockchain getting crushed after their big runs bitcoin are used to this volatility but this is the first time many new bitcoin believers are feeling the crunch since piling in. how long does this last, will these newbie investors be scared off for good, dan? >> this is not a bad thing, especially if this whole crypto thing will have some legs here from october to late november, bitcoin doubled, it went from 5 to 10,000 then doubled again we had a 30% pullback, it felt like a panic it was in all the alt coins, a lot of really bad headlines.
5:02 pm
our twitter feeds were taken over by crypto in the last 48 hours. it's important to remember this is one asset class, it did not go into other asset classes. i know a lot of people who have been on this train, i have not, i'm just a tourist, i'm gambling like most of you on my coinbase iphone people are waiting for the pullback we might have put in a short term bottom. >> if it were a stock, that's a great question >> and the question is, and it's not, so how do you interpret the chart? >> let's pretend it is, i'll play that game i heard bk on with you during "power lunch," he talked about exactly that, he bought it a couple of times today. effectively, it traded rather well given everything that happened and everything we've just talked about. steve has been on this, we gave him kudos on tuesday overstock was 20 handle or low 30 handle when hestarted
5:03 pm
talking about. on tuesday we flagged it and said look at the price action today, traded at an all-time high, closed lower on the day on huge volume. we said good opportunity to pull the rip cord turned out that was right in the short term i still think there is downside there. the cme, which is not a crypto stock, selloffs in cme should be bought >> dan opened up the show, when you see this racheting higher in the stock price, the person that buys it last is the weakest hand they always say it gets out of the weak hands you have a lot of millionaires on paper, made from the racheting up in price. >> of bitcoin itself >> on bitcoin itself so you want to make sure you become a millionaire in it reality versus on paper when you see your position go from x to ten times x or a hundred times x. in bitcoin, discipline leaves, no one is staying that long forever. you get people who put the pressure on.
5:04 pm
countries, regulation comes on you saw the russian headline, they're going to start regulating it. maybe you have an oligarch selling it, maybe you have chur chunky sellers in here it was a risk off trade in the overall market guy bought overstock ico, initial coin offering, is what overstock offers with t zero it's a blockchain. it's a different element i think the true weakness in financials is that financials were believers in blockchain ultimately in the future as well and they sold off that element i think they will buy it back. i think this is a buying opportunity. >> i think the way it traded today was excellent. the way it ended the day, i agree with guy, i looked at it as a huge win for cryptocurrencies in general, especially the sort of most prevalent ones i think it bled into the market,
5:05 pm
especially amd anything that had the garbage bias, the buzzwords of ai, blockchain, what have you, and we can talk crypto or ai blockchain, a blockchain company, we know it's going to be a very prevalent technology what we don't know is the real open-ended value here and what companies are going to be around you have to bet on management team, find management teams that you trust that have turned around and built companies in technology businesses. they're the ones that are likely to be successful >> i think there was also a very big fundamental shift that happened as far as currencies were concerned this week when charlie lee, the founder of bitcoin, sold his. it made people think twice about it to steve's point, okay, it's maybe okay to be a billionaire or millionaire on paper, but let's figure out how to actually become a millionaire or billionaire. that changed the mindset of
5:06 pm
people who were holding on for dear life. >> a lot of people are bitcoin believers, one of the more surprising investments that has today, mike novogratz who we have had on the show a couple of times, he called for bitcoin 8,000 and scrapped his plans to bring out his bitcoin hedge fund, quite a flip from what he told us last week. listen so right now you're planning to launch your fund next year, early next year or so? >> end of the week >> the end of the week did you move that up >> we had -- listen, you know, launching a fund is always challenging. i wish we had launched three months ago because it would have been much, much easier investing. at one point you come start. so we're going to start. and we'll see from there >> by the way, we called mike novogratz and invited him back on but he declined but if you believe these guys on the way up, do you believe these guys when times are tough? he's calling for bitcoin 8,000,
5:07 pm
which does not necessarily mean that that precludes his call for 40,000 sometime next year. >> you can't be dogmatic in other words, if you agreed with him on the way up and agree with his rationale, just because he might be saying something you don't like to hear, you shouldn't then disagree with him. you can't be dogmatic. he knows a lot my sense is mike novogratz knows more about bitcoin than 99.5% of the people watching today, myself included, bk being the exception. if you believed his reasons for the way up, you have to believe his reasons for the way down >> you often talk about a two-day rule does that apply to this? >> of course you said originally, trade it like a stock i think you have to trade everything like it's a stock it is a three-day rule when you look at what happened with mike, it's almost when you postpone an ipo. the times aren't right for it. and when you look at bitcoin, it is like a microwave.
5:08 pm
it's unbelievable how fast >> bitcoin found a bottom for the day. >> he's had such an unbelievable call but now if he takes off this fund and he wants to put a bottom into the stock, the whole thing gets a little convoluted i don't want to take away from the fact that he's had an amazing call from bitcoin. >> in the name of a stock that traded like bitcoin traded today or any of these currencies traded today, ripple went down to 69 cents or something like that, closed at a buck ten bitcoin rallied back the three-day rule doesn't apply in this scenario we saw a massive turnaround in these. i think it's bullish >> he said bitcoin itself will be range bound for months between 10,000 and 60,000 and it could go as low as 8,000 at the end of the day, this is a guy who has made hundreds of millions of dollars being long ethereum he's a momentum trader, a macro trader i wouldn't take any of his targets and be trading off of that listen, you guys, this may be the mother of all time tops.
5:09 pm
that moved up to 19,500 or something, the volume at which it did it, the market cap at which it did it. to me, i think that range bound call is probably -- >> not bad >> it's great for traders and great for people who are sick of the stock market, nine and a half vix >> speaking of charts, our next guest today says crypto crush could be your best chance to buy bitcoin. the chart master, carter worth, is at the plasma >> we've seen this dozens of times before in the short life that bitcoin has had but first, the depressing thing for all of us, and frankly it is just that. let's just put this in context a hundred grand, since 2011 when bitcoin debuted, for the last five years a bagger in apple, six, a million to in tesla, 3.7 billion. let's say you didn't risk a hundred, that's a lot of money,
5:10 pm
you risked only 10,000 you would have 370 million bucks in your pocket how about if you risked a thousand 3, 4 million bucks nothing is like this there are all the analogies to the south sea bubble, to the tulips there's no rate of change ever in any data that's like this let's look at the current selloff. here is -- now, this is important. if you do an arinar i.t ar iith this is since inception, down 38, down 93, down 25, down 76, 73 in that context, what makes this different? you can say, yeah, this was a few people playing here, now it's big money fair enough. in the context of corrections, there's nothing different per se if there were, how did all these
5:11 pm
happen we have ones that are 93 73 67 70 this is only 33. let's look at the here and now chart, to put this in context. this is over the past year these are remarkably uniform 25, 25, 31, 33 and if you were to draw a trend line, for what it's worth, today we checked back almost perfectly. and after being down a lot more, it did close well. we sort of bounced off this top of the channel if you're not involved, and you've wished you had made billions, take advantage of this and put a thousand bucks on it or a little more >> carter's going to come on over i'm not going to ask the question because he's just going to come over thank you, karen, for bringing the chair in all right, carter. the last chart you had was the 2017 chart >> we've had four sort of 25 --
5:12 pm
now, again, if it were a stock -- it's unlike anything else there's no way to know we don't know what valuation is. people have made a lot of money talking about going down to 8,000. maybe it's range bound but the channel sort of lends itself perfectly to what trend work is. the checkback is at a level -- >> that's what i was going to ask you. is this the perfect thing to use technical analysis for >> it might be we can't talk about cash flow. there was fundamentally an argument it should be worth 20% the value of gold. who knows what right? when it was at its low point, it touched the top of that channel and bounced. >> as i've been looking at loin for most of the year, it was like a magnet to round numbers did you find that in your work, it got stuck at -- >> a lot of synergy to it, the advances and the pullbacks have ratios in terms of the magnitude and duration it's remarkable how today's low,
5:13 pm
ail all of a sudden, it closed very well >> last question, do you wish the chart history were longer, though you don't like to look at ipos >> ipo has no history. pattern interpretation, current price juxtaposed against past price. as fundamental is if someone said they earned x for the quarter, a dollar, what is the last ten quarters were a good quarter? five years is enough >> even if it doesn't capture bitcoin at a dollar? >> that's why you have to do log scales so you can adjust for that >> log scales. the one and only carter worth. >> what is that thing you talk about, the parthenon isn't he supposed to wear a tie on the show? >> carter, thank you, carter worth of cornerstone macro did you buy bitcoin? >> i bought bitcoin cash i actually had been selling the bitcoin.
5:14 pm
to me, i think our friend that's been on the show a couple of times now, the evangelist for bitcoin, mailed a good argument. bk made a good argument the other day, faster, cheaper coming up, it's time to take stock. will the highest yielding stocks be your best bets? plus retailers are raging ahead of the holiday shopping spree. how big a boom could the christmas season be? one auto stock is stalling this month one isoi t gngo kick into overdrive. much more "fast money" after this just like some people like pre-shaken sodas. having their seat kicked on an airplane. being rammed by a shopping cart. sitting in gum. and walking into a glass door. but for everyone else, there's directv. for #1 rated customer satisfaction over cable, switch to directv

they had to evacuate the terminal nobody was getting in and out for 30 minutes it's back to normal now but you're seeing ripple effects through the southwest network, if you're waiting for a plane or connection, that could be a problem, watch out for that this weekend, melissa >> thank you, eric chemi at newark airport this of course as the dow transports sit at record highs what do we make of these stocks, pete >> delta airlines made an all-time high earlier this week. valuation is compelling, i think it trades close to ten times forward earnings this tax bill, out of all the companies that it favors, it favors delta in one of the highest ways delta spoke about it at their investor meeting last week >> i agree, i think delta is a great name to own. that's probably my favorite pick this year. i also like jetblue, any of these names will work because they have strong fundamentals and pricing.
