your future. now, becky quick we begin with toys for the holidays there is nothing like seeing the joy on a child's face opening presents and many of this year the hottest toys are packed with the latest technology. buyer beware the gadgets actually safe? andrew day has more in our "cover story." >> i'm listening to you. >> reporter: that voice is a stranger talking through a doll. it's a demo, but the public interest research group is concerned that my friend kayla could double as a spy. >> if a stranger is within distance of this bluetooth connection, they can actually listen in on your child. they can talk to your child. >> reporter: the interactive doll is banned by german regulators already and perg says kayla is just the beginning. >> we are already seeing internet toys coming on to the market. >> reporter: genesis toys which makes my friend kayla did not
5:32 am
respond to our request for comment. according to the toy it industry trade group, there are no reported incidents for the doll, but at least one consumer group timed a complaint with the federal trade commission, which regulates children's online safety. >> toy safety is the toy industry's number one priority that's not just the physical safety but the online safety of the child playing with the toy. >> reporter: the consumer product safety commission, or cpsc, regulates toys. >> cpsc is begins to look into this the internet of things what does it mean for the safety of the toy and security. >> reporter: another hot toy at the radar, fidget spinners found for sale at target, but loaded with lead. according to tests by cpsc, an accredited lab. >> one had a whopping 33,000 parts per million of lead. 330 times the league limit for lead allowed for children's products. >> reporter: get this. that spinner is legal because the label says 14 and above.
5:33 am
so cpsc toy regulations don't apply. >> if fidget spinners are marketed to 14 or younger they have to immediate the standards. >> the manufacturer says safety is one of our top priorities our products are tested and comply with safety standards according to target, while these two products comply with all cpsc guidelines for fidget spinners, based on the concerns raised we're removing them from our assortment and working closely with our vendors making sure all spinners carried at target immediate the guidelines for children's products. to protect kids from lead, make sure you check the age on the label, and the advice most security experts have when you connect any device to the internet, change the default password now, some toys like the doll kayla don't have a password at all nap leaves the toy totally exposed.

for "on the money," i'm andrea day. >> whether getting a child an internet connected toy or a loved one an amazon echo what should you look for when buying one of these gadgets ed lee, managing editor at rico. thanks for being here. >> of course. >> you hear the stories. the idea doing this. thought about it with an amazon echo never occurred a child's toy could be a listening or hacking device either? >> technology is getting so fast, putting it in almost anything an internet connected toy sounds cool with a lot of features but it's another entry point for a hacker to get in look what's going on in your room, if there's a camera. speak to your child, if it's got a -- >> ah. >> microphone. it's incredibly dangerous. there have been hacking incidents already. it's buyer beware. >> what are tips somebody that has one saying it's the hot toy.
5:35 am
any way to protect your child? >> when the kid is playing with the toy, be around it, to make sure they're using it the way they're supposed to. when they're not, turn it off. take out the batteries so it's not something that can turn on by itself. at the same time educating yourself, making sure you know what the toys can do got a camera, microphone, gps enabled, potentially dangerous things. >> i think about the number of devices around our home from the laptops, to the phones. >> echoes for that matter. >> all of these different things. >> we're just now going to increasingly live in a world where devices are connected. could be your refrigerator in diggs. it's up to the consumer to be more savvy about howed wor the d works around you. >> somebody who covers technology, in the center of all things technology, is it worth it the trade-off for these things >> i think ultimately, people deer riving tons of value from the things we get pt whether google search, getting things
5:36 am
from amazon in two days. the benefits outweigh the cost but it's a great question in terms of silicon valley itself the people behind the products are they taking extra steps to see how these things can be used or exploited that's something they're still coming to grips with. >> when you look at going many home, amazon echo, people tell me i'm paranoid when i worry about hacking. maybe i am. >> i think paranoia should the baseline you should be paranoid always are paranoid. always assume someone's trying to hack it, trying to get in if you approach the world that way, frankly, you'll be better off. that much spamarter and savviera a consumer and congress has to get in and build laws, regulations around how these -- >> rules for -- >> without overregulating. the point, we should be worried, they should be dangerous and should be looked at, considered, regulated in the right way. >> i'm so paranoid i do things
5:37 am
like the camera here on your laptop, put tape over it think i'm being smart. people pointed out, yeah, bhaut about your phone every person in my family over the age of 14 has a phone and laying around the house all the time. >> incredibly fist kasophistica devices. >> and tvs have cameras as well. it's going to become a point, competing, you're not going to necessarily have desktops everywhere but every device will have a competing element that will have connection to the internet i think it makes certain things more convenient. same time, again, paranoia right? that should be the way to approach the world as you approach your fridge or whatever it might be. again, it's -- >> don't go into the kitchen naked. >> for sure. careful what you say >> and on that note of paranoia, we wish everybody a merry christmas. ed, thank you for being here. >> merry christmas to you, too. >> you, too. great to see you. now here's a look at what's

making news heading into a new week on the mon. america's housing market is booming. new home sales rose by 17.5% in november that's the biggest monthly jump in more than 25 years, and it's partly due to low inventory. stocks climbed during the week dow setting a record monday for the 70th time in 2017. that's the most of any year ever the nasdaq crossed 7,000, first time on monday, but failed to hold that number stocks were mixed later in the week imagine a walmart with no cashiers it may be closer than you think. the retail giant reportedly is testing technology to track and charge store purchases without a traditional cashier. good luck with that, shoplifters. stores smaller than a traditional walmart and the company would charge a membership fee for joining. up next on the money looking for a new rental imagine opening the door for this -- wait for it, wait for it yep.

build a better website in under an hour. looking for a rental home? need to see one right now? one california rental management company is offering home tours at a moment's notice, but don't expect a person to answer the door when you ring the bell. >> reporter: this is a millennial she's used to doing everything on an app. >> weird. >> but this was a first. >> nice to meet you. >> she took a rental home tour way robot. kind of a robot. a robot with a rental agent. >> yes
5:42 am
>> reporter: yep even in the bathroom the latest high-tech offering from zen place, a san francisco-based rental management company. >> when our robots what they do, reduce the leasing period and cut down vacancy times for owners and make it a much easier process for tenants who can now literally go from seeing a place that they like to renting it out in a matter of minutes versus the days and weeks of traditional looking. >> reporter: zen place developed the app for the robot. there is a human agent on the other side but the robot can provide the customer with realtime data on the neighborhood, amenities and trends and application built in to apply on the spot. >> thanks, robbia. >> it was fun. definitely weird. >> reporter: weird perhaps, but efficient. >> i've gotten more used to having to do everything through apps and technology. nice to make it convenient and i didn't have to wait on anybody else, and was able to do it in my own time frame. >> reporter: the technology

allows people who might just drive by a home see it immediately. of course, it only works for rentals, because they're usually empty. that is, nothing to steal. but it raises the question of safety for the potential renter, walking into a home alone. >> we ask you to quickly take a picture of your i.d., and then instantly verify who you are and check your background. if it all comes clear we send you a unique code that you can then enter into our smart block. >> it didn't feel like there wasn't somebody there because she was in the room for me. >> reporter: zen place offers the rental service in california but soon will put it in rental homes in five other states including new york and florida if it catches on, it could open the door to more robots in real estate this could only work in a for sale home if the house was empty or perhaps a newly built home that was empty or investor property in any case, it's all about

years and the federal reserve raised interest rates for the third time this year how will all of these changes impact your money? greg mcbride is chief financia an legitimate, a consumer finance site, and greg, thanks for joining us. >> thank you happy holidays. >> happy holidays to you at the end of the year start with tax changes anything anybody should do end of the year, tax moves to make now you won't be able to make in just a few days? >> yes a couple action steps to take this week given the latest tax reform it you're in a situation where you're in a high taxed state and you're going to bump up into that $10,000 threshold for deducting state and local taxes for 2018, look at paying 2018 property taxes this week, before the end of the year. get that on the 2017 taxes so you can deduct it. you can only do that if you've been billed for it also some states will actually give you a discount for paying early. another incentive to do it
5:48 am
there. >> i hear what you're saying about pre-paying property taxes if you can, but also people told me you cannot pre-pay any of your state income tax. courts roomed against that in the part and be careful if you do that. you could get audited for it. >> exactly an important distinction just talking about the ability to pre-pay property taxes. not your state and local income taxes. >> great another question for you home equity loan interest, no longer deductible. what should you do if you have that type of a loan? >> you know, i think this shifts the calculus in terms how people think about debt repayment not only losing the ability to deduct the interest on the home equity borrows but no grandfathering you can say, good thing i got mine already i'm good you're not end of the year, everybody loses the ability to deduct that interest so when you look at that cost, that debt on an after-tax, after-inflation basis, the cost is going to look a lot different in 2018 than it did in 2017,
5:49 am
because, a., you can't deduct the interest anymore from your taxes and, b., the fed is raising interest rates you got the rate on your home equity line marching higher at the same time you can't deduct the interest. >> my point. fed raising interest rates not like you could say, pay off the home equity and put it on a credit card. those are gawk up, like and already likely a higher interest rate here. >> absolutely. virtue of the december rate hike by the fed, by the time the january statement comes in, credit card and home equitiy will see the higher raid a quarter percentage point higher by virtue of the december rate hike. >> charitable deductions still allowed if you itemize the number of people itemizing is expected to drop dramatically. >> absolutely. because the standard deduction is doubling, a lot of people itemizing this year that won't in 2018 that's the line in the sand.
5:50 am
in a situation you don't think you'll itemize deductions in 2018, make the chairable contribution this week on this year's taxes where you can deduct the plus side, tax filing gets easier for a lot of people in 2018 because of the fact they're take the standard deduction rather than worrying about itemizing. >> greg, thank you pretty complicated stuff appreciate your time today. >> thanks for having me. up next "on the money," a look at the news for the week ahead. if you want something bubbly to toast the holidays, we have a sam payne alternative with a french connection.
