longer viable. the president has taken unprecedented action and blocked a deal that's not even been agreed to. there were companies in the past that were subject to a hostile bid and asked committees to look into national security concerns, but never has the president ever in the history of deal making taken action to kill a deal before it's been agreed. this is not a ploy about redomici redomicileiation, this is basically dead >> why do you your sources believe so firmly the deal might be over. there is a school of thought that once broadcom comes back to the united states, assuming they do now, that once they are headquartered here, that those security concerns maybe not go away but they lessen enough that they can rebid for qualcomm.

>> the interesting part of that that we saw, in the letter we saw -- very rare insights into the thinking, we saw a letter published to both companies. in it they didn't take offense as much to the fact that broadcom was a singapore-based company, even though for all intents and purposes it moved to singapore to get away from the u.s. tax domicile, they took offense to the business model which was targeted as private eggi it equity in nature so fundamentally the concern of sifiious and the u.s. government is if the broadcom acquires qualcomm, they will cut r & d spending and then go after the next generation of technology, which they then concluded would

mean other companies would get a leg up on the u.s. >> you're referencing -- >> sifiious is the foreign committee in the u.s., a department under treasury. are we to assume that concern is that broadcom's financial backers, some of its sponsors may not necessarily be singaporean, that there is a concern some of this money is coming from parts of the world where we have less control or political influence? if they succeeded with a deal, they would basically seek to pay back the debt, doing a leverage takeover and seek to pay back the debt and cut short-term profits by cutting long investment in the technology all the blue investment banks have lined up finances, silver

lake, kkr and others are in there with the financing this is an all-american deal except the holding company is singapore based because they did a two inversion two years ago. so in a sense, it's a bit of karma boiting broadcom, which took a move to get tax benefits, now those actions have come back to bite them badly >> intel shares are higher is anyone suggesting that intel may make a bid for qualcomm or a bid for broadcom >> at this point, we're in such a realm of extraordinary developments that would make peoples heads blow off i don't think that will happen i think everyone will take a deep breath, qualcomm announced late last night following the president's orders that its shareholder meeting will be on

march 23rd within the ten-day sort of span of the president calling for. qualcomm will ram through its renomination of its directors. therefore its board will not be overthrown addres broadcom was seeking to do. everybody will have a breather yesterday before all these developments, broadcom came out and said they will speed up plans to move back, which they were aiming for may 6th to april 3rd. then we had this plot twist at the end of last night which ended the whole debate i think what happens next is everyone takes a deep breath and we see where we are in a month or so. >> it's like the bachelor semiconductor ver eor version let's look at the markets. stock futures mildly higher. the benchmark ten-year bond as we said yesterday may be the market story of the year

holding steady around 2.8, 2.9 level. let's get some color and context on your money news joining us now is lori mcdonell at acg analytics, editor to the bear traps report. larry, appreciate you joining us we have to ask you about this broadcom/qualcomm news i know you're not a semiconductor analyst, we're seeing this move and talking about tariffs. do you feel like this is an administration that came in as being seen as pro business which is now establishing itself to be a bit protectionist? >> president trump is playing to his base once again. if a company has moved overseas, as you eluded to a couple years ago, this is coming back to bite them at the end of the day, if mergers and acquisitions are not job creative, if they're job

destructive, big lbos, for example, for the next 20, 30 years, they tend to be job destructive and the white house is playing to their base protecting u.s. jobs, maybe going further than any white house has gone >> yeah. we've never seen a deal of this size be blocked by the white house before are you surprised that the stock market continues to literally just brush off all this news and continue to rise >> yeah. the markets -- this is one of the great bull markets of all time it's a ferocious beast the outperformance of technology versus transportation index and other kind of value related indexes is almost unprecedented. >> just keeps going. here's the thing, is there a reason behind it is it just core fundamental earnings in is it that global economies are reflating?

is it a powell put at the fed? why does this market continue to amaze? >> the market has been -- it has double barrel accommodation. it's got multiple years of fed policy that have suppressed rates and that have forced capital into places that it shouldn't be and now you have fiscal policy that is generating 3 billion, $4 billion of fiscal stimulus this year we're at a point where those two mechanisms have not upset the fed yet, but when the fed pulls back accommodation, we'll drop 20%, 30%, probably in the next 12 months to 6 months. >> how do we make money in this market >> well, right now short-term home builders have been crushed by the fed's move towards rate

hikes. the capitulation score we've been getting has been very solid. bonds -- here's the big thing, this is extremely important. there's been a 75 basis points move up in short-term interest rates, libor libor feeds into credit cards, home equity loans, mortgages, and all kinds of different financing vehicles across america. that is going to ooze into the u.s. economic data in the next one month to three months. that's going to put a bid on bonds as the data comes back to normal or at least comes back towards the mean >> i know it's early, i think so far you've coined it ooze, the word of the day. larry mcdonell, thank you very much >> thank you. on the stock side, pay attention to these stories china's hna group is in some to

the selection committee wouldn't say that's why they were left out. if you look at some of the big numbers, the ncaa as an organization for the first time topped $1 billion in revenue, but three quarters of that, 7$71 million came just from this tournament another big number, $10 billion expected to be gambled on this tournament, 97% of that will be illegal gambling so we asked experts their thoughts about how to reform the ncaa with all the problems around some people, they said, you should allow people to get side endorsements but have a clearinghouse to allow these things to happen so there's no black market activity. another expert said let them get a work study rate for all the hours involved like a minimum wage rate, but not huge pro numbers someone else said what if you allow the nba to get involved as a mediator to bridge the gap
