it is down right jarring and coming on the heels of a presidential decree last night that simply blocked broadcom from beingbroadcom fears that if broadcom bought qualcomm, our nation would surrender its lead to the chinese. talking about punishing china for stealing hours of diplomatic tech companies that do lots of business in the peoples' republic did the weakness in tech make sense? it sure did. broadcom can't purchase qualcomm for national security reasons. does that mean a deal that is in
6:03 pm
front of -- cell phones and if that deal gets blocked to, stocks are going to go even lower than the 5% it fell today. how can sky works leading 5g chip maker ever catch a take-over bill now if you are in it, take it off the table. what else? micron, kevo it might not be for the tech stocks even if it might be good from somehow stop chinese from stealing or technology suppose the chinese decide to retaliate? applied materials are on tonight. they have brilliant innovation and the biggest company on earth apple needs chinese to maintain

its own growth every single one of these worries hits us in the morning but midday people seemed to forget those fears as many stocks rebounded like nothing happened and later in the day, the fear returned. many of these selloffs don't last very long so what was right? the strong opening, the morning swoon, the midday rebounding or the selloff. a week ago we were terrified industrials would be rocked. worrying this was a beginning of a trade war not just with chinese, but perhaps even with the whole world. maybe we have been in a trade war and lying down all the time. and then talking about larry kudlow taking over
6:05 pm
larry, an old friend of mine is fa famously pro free trade. the result, those who sold many of the big international stock got seller remorse as trade wars seemed less likely if larry getsthe job but pompeo is hostile to china maybe we should be worried maybe this tech pull back will turn out to be an overreaction and we will kick ourselvesfor not buying the stocks selling in haste today. sell, buy, sell, buy can't make this stuff up can we just take a step back for a moment, this is not a good way to invest, people. your strategy should not change based on every other presidential tweet even as we do
6:06 pm
have the company twitter on the show tonight entirely possible we will get a real trade war with china. you can freak out all you want to or say what the heck, broadcom is an aberration. tillerson is gone because maybe he wasn't doing a good job succession plans have been made. instead of focusing on everything from the white house, how about evaluating companies on their own merits. maybe don't stress too much about the tweets unless you want to invest in twitter which might be a pretty smart idea how can you possibly own tech here look, there is china oriented tech and china not oriented tech buy shares in alphabet or
6:07 pm
netflix or amazon. and whose stocks are coming down and you have been waiting and waiting. well it is happening or you can invest in the cloud kings we talked about last year, workday, vm ware. splunk won't stop their growth and too powerful more important than that, let's consider the other side of the trade. suppose you only invested the companies that president trump directly attacked in his tweets. first to united tech stock is up. then trashed boeing, 152 stock back then going to $328. i am not saying you should ignore the president i am saying if you have a diversified portfolio, some health care stocks, some bank, some tech, you won't need to

reposition every time a fickle administration changes its view and the main reason none of this particularly worries me, because love trump or hate him, the president is pro stock market, maybe too pro stock market anything he says that is tough on business, there is a counter vailing story. first we here the tariffs. and then we hear the president wants larry kudlow to take over. trump sees the stock market as the older barometer of his job performance. sure the market headed down on the presidential uncertainty still, if you are going to react to every gesture, every comment, every tweet the president makes you will lose sight on the

it's for people who have been hospitalized for a heart attack. brilinta is taken with a low-dose aspirin. no more than 100 milligrams as it affects how well brilinta works. brilinta helps keep platelets from sticking together and forming a clot. in a clinical study, brilinta worked better than plavix. brilinta reduced the chance of having another heart attack... ...or dying from one. don't stop taking brilinta without talking to your doctor, since stopping it too soon increases your risk of clots in your stent, heart attack, stroke, and even death. brilinta may cause bruising or bleeding more easily, or serious, sometimes fatal bleeding. don't take brilinta if you have bleeding, like stomach ulcers, a history of bleeding in the brain, or severe liver problems. slow heart rhythm has been reported. tell your doctor about bleeding new or unexpected shortness of breath any planned surgery, and all medicines you take. if you recently had a heart attack, ask your doctor if brilinta is right for you. my heart is worth brilinta. if you can't afford your medication, astrazeneca may be able to help.

whenever red hot momentum stock loses its mojo it be terrifying that make it is all the more impressive when a momentum stock can arrest its decline and rebound to new highs all over again. so while we are here in san francisco, it is worth addressing square. the payment technology company that can turn any smart phone or tablet into a credit card reader this stock which we have been behind since 12 bucks has been on an insane bull run. rallying over 200% but what really set square apart is its ability to bounce back.
6:26 pm
resilience this stock has been hit with fierce declines that made you want to tear -- well, i know i got this haircut too short both times the stock market was able to turn this stock around how did they do it this is a very well run company with terrific platform and also has becoming a cryptocurrency currency. jack dorsey who is also the chief ceo of twitter suddenly, everyone started acting like square was in cryptocurrency play. and the stock surged to new highs. and square came down with it when bit coin bounced, square bounced. square has enough going for it
6:27 pm
that it doesn't need this tenuous connection to cryptocurrency to power stock the new highs. the best thing they could do is figure out a way to decouple from bit coin. before we get into the crypto maniac side of things, you need to understand what makes square so special in the first place. the very real, very legitimate reasons why this stock has been so strong and so resilient besides from the fact that jack has done a great job square began to take off beginning of last year ever since 2015, investors have been worried in the pavement space. card reader and their cash transfer platform would never be able to go toe to toe with the likes of apple pay or pay pal. turns out the competition wasn't
6:28 pm
all that dire. apple pay hasn't done badly but far from becoming a new standard facebook peer to peer payment service is a dud and vemo hasn't been enough to stop square. this company found its place in the payment industry and they are not just surviving, they are thriving last year they reported a profit sooner than anyone expected. mixing its lucrative high margin subscription services. and the combination has made the stock incredibly attractive. now square is expected to earn 45 cents per share this year which is amazing when 12 months ago, this was a revenue growth where earnings seemed to be in
6:29 pm
the distance, distance and each time square shoots the lights out, its stock goes flying that is a major reason square stock nearly doubled not long after the company delivered another amazing quarter in november. which is a lot like pay pal's vemo platform. everyone was salivating over these cryptocurrency square's fabulous -- came on our show and offered context. >> it behooves us to know where our payment is going when we heard from individuals, this isn't sellers, this is individuals using square cash to make payments individuals saying we want an easy way to buy and
6:30 pm
sell bit coin. >> however, jack dorsey the ceo has been more aggressive about promoting the idea that square wants to give merchants a way to accept and trade bit coin. square wants to be a part of that but if not, they don't lose much by running a pilot program in short, it is not that big a deal but since they announced that, it created a lot of ir rational exuberance in the stock. over the next seven trading days the stock surged as bit coin continued to run higher. plunging from 19,000 down to 6,000 in lows, square got slammed along with it even though there was a minor connection to the real numbers
6:31 pm
they quickly became sellers. by the end of december square stock plunged back to 34 then the stock started making a comeback and once the crypto manics had been washed out, the stock could rally again, then jack dorsey sends out a tweet saying instant buying and selling -- now maybe that was just bad timing. this is when the market wide selloff got going. sins then, of course the stock has caught fire once again ran up 25% in two weeks between the lows and the next earnings report i mean, the company is
6:32 pm
forecasting 37% revenue growth with accelerating. and speculated that there was more square could be doing with bit coin in the future and that is no the what i want to see it is not sustainable. here is where i come down. i adore square it's got fabulous fundamentals, a great long-term growth story what i don't adore is how the ceo got overly promotional to trade platform about bit coin. i think it would be smart for the company to play down this connection on the other hand all of this volatility in square has given you two amazing opportunities to buy the stock in weakness. you might get another chance to buy this stock into unjustified weakness, maybe its $1.36 pull
6:33 pm

years. broadcom's headquarters in singapore is actually run in san jose this is known as an avago part of a tax averse deal in the process of officially moving its headquarters to san jose it has been in san jose all along. even though broadcom is not chinese, more than half of its sales comes from china so you can argue that blocking the largest tech take-over ever has some logic to it the administration may think broadcom is too close to china perhaps more important i think it is all with tariffs and aluminum and maybe more important
6:56 pm
stealing our intellectual property i agree we need to take a tougher line with the chinese, but some of these views are down right confusing. if canada buys steel from china, then it can't come here, but if it is made in cannada is fine. if hawk tan were born in malaysia -- is the designation precious now of course you can argue that the president was backing up the treasury department's committee on foreign investments in the u.s. the message this administration is sending to all american companies and silicon valley in particular is odd. this may be one of the situations where hard cases make bad law. but all the same, i suspect we have seen the high quart mark for tech take-over
