hi everyone welcome to "on the money. cracking the code, the demand for tech jobs is on the rise, but the number of women in the field is falling why? and what can be done the future of the space race, we will talk to a former astronaut. we are in the thick of hurricane season, and there's already been billions of dollars in damage. should you get flood insurance, and what does it cover gets fit and kicking butt. the husband and wife team behind a booming way to stay healthy. "on the money" starts right now.
5:31 am
this is on the money, your money, your life, your future. now becky quick. we begin with who's hiring and who's getting hired. the tech industry is among the fastest growing in our economy, and yet women are being left behind today fewer than one in five computer science graduates are women. why is there such a huge disparity, and how do we close the gender gap when it comes to technology that's our cover story. >> computing expertise with coding at the core is the most in demand skill in the american job market amid this boom, research shows that as a percentage, the number of women computer science majors is declining in 2016 more than 80% of computer degrees were earned by men, and almost 75% of professional computer jobs are held by men. why are women falling behind i recently spoke with melinda gates of the bill and melinda gates foundation about the imbalance. >> women are so underrepresented
5:32 am
in the technology sector in the united states. we need to create new pathways for women into technology, that first opening computer science class at college is too late >> girls who code is an organization created to help young girls discover technology. the program offers curriculum to set up after school clubs so girls can learn the basics of coding with the ultimate goal of inspiring them to pursue a career in technology in just six years 90,000 young women across the country have signed up, and the girls who code alumni who have declared majors are excusing computer science or related fields at a rate 15 times the national average. joining us now is the founder of girls who code thanks for being here. >> thank you for having me. >> you started this six years ago. what was the inspiration why'd you do it? >> i'm a weird person to have started this organization. i was terrified of math and science growing up i wasn't a coder i was running for office, and
5:33 am
when i would go into schools, i would siee dozens of boys clamoring to be the next steve jobs and mark zuckerberg i thought where are the girls? my parents came here as refugees i've had a job since i was 12. i knew that having a great education, having the opportunity to march into the middle class had changed my life and my family's life, and i wanted to make sure every girl in america had that opportunity. >> how does the organization work we just saw some of it how old are the girls, and where are the clubs that you're signing them up? >> so we run free summer programs for rising juniors and seniors in high school we run them in about 80 different technology companies from facebook to twitter, to adobe to prudential, to microsoft to receisephora. we have about 4,000 clubs in all 50 states. we probably run the largest summer and after school free
5:34 am
programs for girls. >> we just mentioned there's been huge success, 15 times the national average for girls who have signed up and done this what happens next? i know you're partnering with some colleges at this point. >> yeah. the thing is i realized we can close the gender gap when you tell them about computer science, they get interested we also know the pipeline is leaky all throughout if you raise your hand and say i'm gust to major in computer science, half of those women will drop out by the time that they graduate. >> why >> part of that is that annoying voice in their head that tells them they're not good enough or smart enough that annoying voice can come from a male college student in your class or a teacher with microaggressions or the fact that you're the only one it's isolating it's really important to build community, to build sister hood, to build bravery
5:35 am
>> melinda gets mentioned that it's too late if you wait until you show up your freshman year it's great to have high school girls that are doing this, but is there an argument that it needs to start sooner? >> absolutely. which is why we've launched third through fifth middle school clubs we have to start as young as we possibly can essentially it's in middle school, right? where all of a sudden these subjects aren't cool you're listening to culture. you're wearing the t-shirt that says i'm allergic to algebra, and you're getting these messages that math and science are not for you, and you start listening. that's where we need to intervene. >> that's a pretty tough nut to crack. what have you learned in the last six years that you would put towards how we go after that i always say that i stalk shonda rhimes, right? culture is everything. and the second thing i learned
5:36 am
is we have to raise our girls to be brave, not perfect. from the time that girls are young, we're teaching them to smile pretty and play it safe and get all a's, and we're not teaching them to take risks. we're not teaching them to fail. so much of coding is about failing. >> you mentioned at the beginning that you weren't a coder, are you now >> i've learned, and it was frustrating for me, right? because i was the girl who got all a's. it was hard learning to do something new for the first time it's also been exhilarating and exciting and i feel good that i can start learning to build my own website. >> thank you it's a pleasure. >> thank you. now here's a look at what's making news as we head into a new week on the money. you will soon be paying more interest on your credit card, your auto loan or home equity line of credit after a two-day meeting the federal reserve raised rates increasing the fed funds target rate by a quarter percent saying the economy is strengthening that move was widely expected and rates are still at historic

lows still, the stock market didn't like that and the dow fell on the news the nasdaq and s&p 500 following along. america's economy grew at a strong pace in the second quarter. the final reading of the gross domestic product showed an increase of 4.2% that's about in line with estimates. the gdp says the broadest measure of the size and scope of the economy. weight watchers is slimming down, the company changing its name to ww and emphasizing overall health and wellness rather than exclusively diet. up next, from the moon to mars as nasa turns 60. we will ask nasa's former leader where the next mission will take us. and hurricane season is here, how to protect your home from flood damage. right now, though take a look at how the stock market ended the week

on monday nasa turned 60 they have pushed the frontiers of the discovery from the moon landing to the space shuttle and towards the next goal of landing humans on mars charles bolden has played a major role at nasa thank you so much for being with us today. >> it's great to be with you. >> you've been part of nasa since you became an astronaut back in 1980. >> a long time. >> what does this milestone mean to you >> it's a tremendous birthday to be celebrating six decades of nasa being the organization that serves the nation in the four areas, four primary science and technology areas that we do today being human space flight, science, aerognnottics and technology developments. the giants who founded this organization. >> it's hard to believe 60 years. i'm still trying to get my head
5:41 am
around that. >> president trump has proposed space force as a new branch of the military that certainly has people excited. what do you think of the idea as somebody who's been on the inside >> i don't think of it you mentioned the fact that it's been proposed as a dod program, and i learned a long time ago, i was the nasa administrator, i don't do dod. >> all right, what do you think about getting americans excited and fired up about space anything >> that i am very excited about, and that is the mission that i undertook for president obama back in 2009 when he nominated me to be the nasa administrator, and that's something about which i'm very excited. >> in fact, one of your goals as administrator was to land humans on mars by the mid-2030s. >> that's correct. >> are we still on that timetab timetable? >> i think we're on target to do that you know, the trump administration has taken on the challenge of trying to put humans back on the surface of the moon, which i think is
5:42 am
important. you know, it's not essential to putting humans on mars, but i think it would be a very big step for us, as long as we do it in the right way, which is to capitalize on the development of commercial space sector that is becoming more and more robust each day utilize our commercial sector as well as our international partners to help us get humans back on the surface of the moon while nasa leads the way with our international partners and entrepreneurs in getting humans to mars. >> what do you think about the martian with matt damon? >> it was awe? >> was it helpful? >> it was absolutely awesome, the book and the movie in talking to the director and the producer and others, it was really their intent to try to be as close to fact as possible, and much of what you saw in "the martian" has either already happened or is in the process of happening. an example would be taking carbon dioxide from the martian atmosphere we have a mission called mars 2020 that's going to land on
5:43 am
mars in that year. it will take carbon dioxide, disassociate it so we can get oxygen that we can breathe ask use in propulsion systems. >> i love that the science was real, but it's still scary who wants to get stuck up there trying it figure out how to grow their food with their own poop. >> that's the reason we want -- that's a reason we're going to spend time in liunar or bit. you don't want to have to figure out when things get to mars. >> what about spacex, blue origin, virgin galactic are working to make happen is that a good thing >> i think it's an awesome thing. i would go up in a heartbeat my only plea to them is somebody spend some time in developing the platforms to which humans can go, things to take the place
5:44 am
of the international space station as we try to provide a sustainable infrastructure. >> of course you would go up there. you've already done it dumb question. >> thank you, no, it wasn't at all. thank you, charles. >> thank you so very much. up next, we are on the money. just one inch of flood damage can cost up to $25,000, and there is one way to protect yourself we'lltalk about it also, later, the gym where skills from the ring can get you into fighting shape. do you hear that?

. with rivers rising more than expected hurricane florence could result in more than $20 billion in uninsured flood losses by some estimates homeowners across the country may now be wondering if they have proper coverage senior personal finance correspondent sharon epperson joins us with what you need to know about flood insurance no matter where you live. if you think homeowner's insurance covers this, you'd be wrong. >> everyone thinks i have homeowner's insurance so anything that happens to my home is going to be covered well, if there's wind damage due to a hurricane or heavy storm, yes, your homeowner's insurance policy will likely cover that, even though you may have a higher deductible if you're in a really windy area, but it will never cover flooding that's what people don't understand when you have a couple inches of water in your basement, like i did this week because of the heavy rain, you have to have flood insurance if you want to have a claim and get that
5:48 am
covered. >> i'm so sorry to hear that it's happened to a lot of people you think you have the homeowners insurance if you have flood insurance, what does it cover how can you run through it >> one of the things you need to know is it's a policy available through the federal government, the national flood insurance programment you can buy it from a private insurer but it does come from the federal government the average premium is probably around $700 a year the other thing to know is you have to renew it every single year you have to make sure you go through the process and renew that every year. >> what if you don't have flood insurance, what happens? >> if you don't have flood insurance you're in a pretty bad situation. you don't have that coverage for things that you need even if you have it, you need to make sure you know what is covered with the flood insurance. not everything is covered. even if you have water in your basement that comes from the sewer, though, it hasn't come from inland water or tidal water. >> how do they determine that sometimes? >> they have their ways of figuring this out. also you have to have a couple
5:49 am
properties in your neighborhood that have been damaged in order to show that that is -- >> an actual flood >> an actual flood what is a flood to you may not be what is a flood to the national flood insurance program. if you do have the coverage, things like your window treatments, your carpet, permanent bookshelves, things where the water has gotten up into your living room and damaged so many things, you're going to be oakkay. the issue is the basements they have permanent flooring and wall covering and tvs down there, that's not covered. >> how are you how's your home? >> my home is fine we have dry vac'd it out i'm hoping it's going to be oake today. >> rain, rain, go away you look at these people and they have friends and family members in the areas that have been ravaged by florence and
5:50 am
