5:30 am
. >> hi, everyone, welcome to "on the money. i'm becky quick. he is the man behind 1-800-got tunk the high school drop out how being willing to fail can lead to success. flunking retirement. why not working just doesn't work for some people if you are worried about fluffy or fido putting on some weight over the holidays how to keep them in shape.
5:31 am
>> announcer: this is "on the money. now becky quick. we begin with recycling, when you sort your cans and paper in the right bin, you feel like you are helping the environment. for years, selling those were also a money making. that is not the case now that is what jane wells found in this cover story rethinking recycling >> reporter: the recycling business is getting trashed. >> the recycling model right now in the u.s. is broken. >> reporter: ceo of public services a waste management service doing very well with garbage business. not so well with recycling they are not alone for years, the garbage man picked up recycle possibles. he did well selling overseas to china.
5:32 am
now china has a pollution problem. those values have plummeted to about $200 a ton to half that. the values of these are coming down more and more consumers are putting in the wrong stuff in the bin. plastic bottles are fine, plastic bags, no they gum up the machines clean cardboard is great if you put in the greasy part of your pizza box, you could contaminate the entire load. >> we are sending the truck to your home to pick up clean recycleables and having to spend a lot of money to clean that up. >> it warns if the retail value stays low, collection rates at the curb could rise.
5:33 am
it might more slowly if people learn what goes in to the blue bin and what doesn't think loose paper cans and bottles. nearly a third of what comes in here, ends up in the landful from anaheim, california >> the ceo of the recycling partnership, a national nonprofit. kooej, thank you for being here today. >> hi, becky is this whole recycling issue broken >> it is not broken, it needs help >> this is a team sport. we are all involved. >> one of the key issues is people think they are helping. what do you do with consumers. how can you better educate them. >> we have a term for that
5:34 am
we call it wish recycling. people want to help. in order to get the rewards, we have to get the right things in the bin. one, recycle, two, recycle right and make sure none of it is bagged >> i've heard don't put the greasy box in. do you need to clean everything out? >> just think about it municipality has never made serious money. they may have gotten some revenue back, this has been a cost to communities they do it like they do public service and like they provide clean waters >> is this a real issue that if china is no longer buying it, it doesn't make the financial sense it did years ago >> we are in a change time
5:35 am
we need to hold the course while we err making a shift. we need to think why china stopped buying our stuff the truth is, we were sending them junky loads now that we are shifting to the domestic market and cleaning them up to get to the highest speaks, that takes money it is not and indicator that system is broken, it needs to be healthy and probust for years to come >> i understand your message i think most people want to do the right thing. i don't know if that will stand if they pay more money to do it. for management teams it has not been profitable for a while. do you have real concern what we've been doing for years will start to break down? >> there will be change. all these companies need to be
5:36 am
profitable this is not a good will exercise for them our current u.s. model is different than other countries it is at the expense of the local government to make that happen that's part of the reason our organization was founded to accept donations to really put them to work and build long-standing solutions. we know it is a big challenge for them to handle on their own. our current system has 20,000 local governments making their own decisions. they don't always know where to start. they look to us to bring them expertise and help and tools to bridge this gap we are facing in recycling. >> thank you for your time today, keefe >> thank you >> theairline industry is one sector jobs are taking off students are not only earning a
5:37 am
high school dip overwhelm au but graduating with a degree >> reporter: this isn't a typical shop class at this high school, instructors are teaching earning an opportunity to obtain a high school diploma as well as two faa licenses to enter directly into the work force >> never in a million years did i think i would be working on a plane. >> the school's role is important as boeing estimates 750,000 technicians will be needed the job can pay some $70,000 a year, with benefits and without a college degree >> the aviation industry is facing a growing set of challenges including aan aging
5:38 am
work force, a gender gap and lack of stem educated employees. >> at jetblue, the first woman to attend aviation high school she says there is also a perception problem the airline and others are working to change >> a lot of parents want kids to be in white color jobs in the industry, we have to do a better job of partnering with the schools. >> other challenges including overnight shifts with off hours. ensuring passenger safety means the job is both important and exciting >> to me, safety is a top priority you could have a family member or friends flying on the plane, you never know, safety is number one. >> finding teches to work which
5:39 am
is why they are partnering with schools around the country to ensure the pipeline. >> you touched on what they need to do the idea that parents want their kids to go to school and study white color jobs >> exactly, look at the pay, $70,000 and two faa licenses the idea that college is not necessarily for everyone we had a similar story with construction it is getting the information out there and talking about it and letting kids know it is for everyone including women >> thank you so much up next, we are on the money we'll talk to the founder of 1-800-got junk and how he turned one $700 truck into a $300

5:49 am
what does it mean to flunk retirement >> let's start with the bright side there are a lot of folks out there optimistic about retirement there was a new study that showed 85% of workers think retirement will be a positive new chapter. they are realistic they are worried about certain things about 40% are worried they are not going to have enough money 70% are afraid they'll run out of money and they are worried they don't know what they would do if they did run out of money it is a couple of things, not knowing what you would do if you aren't working that's another reason people feel like they may feel retirement they may not know what hobbies or interests they'll have or what family or community will be around you >> how much is financial and
5:50 am
emotional? >> i think it is both. i talked to a number of financial advisors, one who wrote a book, "retirement fail." he saids it more personal decisions that cause you to make poor decisions to not live the retirement life you want that can be not planning for the unexpected, a divorce can really derail your financial lifestyle, health care expenses higher than you expected or things you can control like you continue to subsidize your adult children. you make some type of investment children like pulling money out of retire to afford a lifestyle you really can't afford. >> here is what drives me nuts, the first question they ask you, how long do you plan to live that is impossible if i could tell you that >> that is impossible. there is a study that said
5:51 am
nearly one in three investors said they regretted pulling money out of 401 k too early and admitted it was an emotional decision they wanted because they wanted something right now. >> how can you avoid failing your retirement and rethink some of these goals what are less ones we should take away. >> one is a major lesson all the time stop overspending. stop overspending now and don't overspend in retirement. you also want to make sure, don't give your kids too much money when they are adults they need to learn how to be financially dependent. you never plan for a divorce in terms of health care, try to stay healthy and figure out perhaps how long you may live. we don't have to fail. rethink how you you are going to do it and you get an a plus.
5:52 am
>> stop spending money and work forever. >> up next "on the money," dogs may shed fur but many may also need to shed pounds. some healthy ways to get them on track. we'll be right back.
