tv   On the Money  CNBC  December 29, 2018 5:30am-6:00am EST

5:30 am
welcome to "on the money." i'm becky quick. mirror mirror on the wall, how this device could be part of the healthy new year and the trends for medicine in 2019 oil prices are plummet and go that's good news when you fill up your tank, but it may not be great news for the economy where are prices going next and why. got a gift card? what if it's from a place you never shop how to get the most out of that piece of plastic getting a kick out of
5:31 am
staying in shape fit, fab, and fun. "on the money" starts right now. >> announcer: this is "on the money," your money, your life, your future. now, becky quick we begin with business you may want to kick start a new workout, but if you need some guidance and you don't want to leave the house, guess what, now there's a mirror for that. that's our cover story and our eric has more. >> it may look like just a mirror, but this mirror could change the way you look. a mirror with a built-in video screen that has instructors leading exercise classes. >> we're going to start with lunges step that right foot back, touch the ground. >> reporter: the founder of mirror and a former professional ballerina. >> reporter: they're exploring fitness that they might not otherwise do in a public setting. so you have baseball players taking a yoga class for the first time. >> the product cuts $1,500 up front plus a $40 monthly subscription for live and on demand classes it's similar to the peleton
5:32 am
spinning bikes in people's homes but here they could be anything including yoga, pilates, boxing, cardio, strength, stretch. another option in the global industry athletes like this elite marathon runner balancing motherhood and pregnancy needs the flexibility to prepare at home for the upcoming olympic trials. >> you still need to maintain your core, your strength so that you can do it in the convenience of your home and you don't need a gym membership. >> she sees proathletes as one dimension of the product i think everyone is excited about the prospect of connecting athletes to intraers outside of their immediate geography. >> whether it's the weights routine or kickboxing, i found a way to get my heart rate up.
5:33 am
>> we didn't build the mirror as a call for people to cancel their gym memberships but we are finding that increasingly our mirror users are able to get a better, more convenient and lower cost option at home than through studios. >> as people look to get in shape through the new year this is one of many high-tech options out there and it takes away the excuse of not having enough time to get to the gym. >> i could come up with another excuse does peleton need to be worried about this >> the industry is so big that there's room for so many types of things out there that if you like peleton and you want the bike you can have it but if you don't want the boik, you can do this i have some people that have enough money they'll probably get both. >> oh, man, i hate those people. they just make the rest of us feel terrible. getting fit is no easy task but it's crucial for your help it's also crucial for companies
5:34 am
subsidizing your health care cost joining us with more on that, is dr. cosgrove he has joined google as an adviser to their health care system thank you for being here today. >> nice to be here. >> this is the time of year when we start thinking about being healthier. it's really hard to stick to it. >> one of the most important things is you have a buddy to do it with. maybe this mirror is the buddy that you do it with. >> if you have no freniends, at least you have the mirror. >> you need to have a partner and set a reasonable goal. >> some companies are offering financial incentives you did stuff like that. >> we did that and made an enormous difference. for example, we changed the food, we gave people incentives to exercise. we gave people incentives to stay healthy if they had diabetes or hypertension or asthma or obesity and we saw
5:35 am
amazing results. over the last several years, our inflation rate of our health care cost has been flat. probably saved us over $600 million in cost for looking after our employees and it reduced the cost for the employees for their co-pays for their health. >> when you say keeping inflation flat in health care, that's a pretty big deal. >> our rate was going up 7.5% a year ten years ago. before we started this stopping smoking, they lost an average of 5 pounds for all of our employees over that period of time. they were having 20% reduction in sick days and it was costing them less in terms of their insurance. >> you're working at google now. what kind of projects are you working on there >> as you look at health care we have a blessing and a curse in the fact that we have an explosion of the amount of
5:36 am
knowledge that there is in health care. for example, there's 5800 medical journals turning out 800,000 articles a year. >> basically watson. that's about it. >> there's this enormous amount of data and the data is a problem for us to keep track of and that's why i think the cloud is going to come in, and as the data goes to the cloud all the major cloud providers have come to an agreement that they'll share the information. >> so you don't have to worry about privacy but you can dig deeply through this information and try to find trends and ways to solve problems. >> right so interoperability. >> what kind of things in your dream world what kind of things could we resolve with this information >> what the best treatment for things are for example, if you are 50 years old and hypertensive and obese and so on, what's the right
5:37 am
hypertensive medication for you. and it varies from person to person if you have enough people with those characteristics then you begin to predict that. >> you can find out which is working and which is not. >> exactly and we think it will cut down on the time for drug trials to be able to bring things to market more rapidly. >> that's really exciting. >> it's very exciting. >> so what types of technology in 2018, things that are being used by doctors, by hospitals, what kind of things are we starting to see? like watches or things >> i'm incredibly excited about the opportunities for telehealth four or five years ago my daughter and i were out on the east coast and she gets a rash on her face so i take a picture and send it to the dermatologist and turns out to be poison ivy so think of what that saves us it saves us the trip to the doctor's office, parking and going in and sitting in the waiting room and going into the
5:38 am
exam room and repeating all of that at a minimum that's time. >> it stops it from getting worse so you can get the right treatment all the way and saves you the pain and agony for living through that longer than you need to. think about mental health. what the opportunity is there. it's an enormous opportunity kaiser is seeing over 50% of their patients. >> it's great to see you really appreciate it happy new year and i'll see you soon. >> thank you very much nice to be here. >> up next, we're on the money you probably noticed gas prices at the pump have been dropping what's behind that and what's ahead for the new year. >> if you have a gift card this holiday season, be ware. scammers are finding away to drain the balance before you can use it right now, let's take a look at how the stock market ended the week
5:39 am
5:40 am
5:41 am
cheap gas prices have been good news for drivers. but what's triggered that? let's talk about the lower prices for most of us we think great. prices are coming down at the pump that's fantastic but you need to dig deeper into what's happening is this a surprise situation or a demand where the economy around the globe is starting to slow down? >> it's mostly supply and something that tends to happen between october and april.
5:42 am
we just manufacture too much of it it also makes crude oil very sloppy and we just came out of a couple of months where opec producers were producing more crude than what they pledged to in january the bottom line is 2019, and in the end, 2018 will be bookended with cheap prices, but in the middle, we're going to go higher than this and you have to be aware of that. >> if this happens every year, why can't we figure it out >> it's a little bit like cubs fans used to say, they sort of -- hope sprang eternal every april or so. it's like that with gasoline you're going to see higher prices. >> baseball season is driving things, right? people aren't driving as much right now? >> right and demand for gasoline is probably going to be flat actually for the next few years. >> it's slower than projection. >> demand in this country is going to be flat the thing that keeps u.s. refiners going is export demand.
5:43 am
>> you think we'll see higher prices but let's break through and read what that might mean for consumers and other places. >> one place that's happy is the airline industry it makes up such a large part of the cost structure if they're paying less before prices come back up should we expect to see cheaper prices >> we should see prices continue to decline in the early part of the year but lower jet fuel prices don't mean lower air fare we learned that in the next few years. >> lower oil prices, are they a danger to the u.s. economy in anyway >> i believe they are. it's like when the president tweeted lower, lower oil prices, i think that if you get into the 40s and around $40, the whole boom breaks down a little bit. >> producers stop producing as much. >> yes, we're very close to that as we start 2019. >> the thing about lowerprices is it usually stops.
5:44 am
it cures lower prices because people stop producing and then prices come back up. >> right but if we had prices above $50 for crude or $55 for crude, we would be producing 4 and 5 million barrels a day more than russia or saudi arabia. >> they don want to see market share. >> they don't want to see market share but for us for the balance payments it's good. >> tom, thank you so much. >> thanks. >> up next, we are on the money. are you hanging on to a stack of unwanted gift cards? don't let them go to waste how to exchange them for something you do want or even get cash and later, you may not know a left hook from an upper cut but if you want to get in shape for the new year, we've got you covered. amazon prime video is now on xfinity x1.
5:45 am
5:46 am
so when you say words like... show me best of prime video into this... you'll see awesome stuff like this. discover prime originals like the emmy-winning the marvelous mrs. maisel... tom clancy's jack ryan... and the man in the high castle. all in the same place as your live tv.
5:47 am
its all included with your amazon prime membership. that's how xfinity makes tv... simple. easy. awesome. >> sharon, it's almost a default at this point. people give out gift cards how big of a trend is this what are some of the most popular gift cards out there >> the national retail federation estimated $30 billion would be spent on gift cards this holiday season and the average person was going to buy four of them for 50 dollars each so it's likely that you got someone under the tree or someone gave it to you as an office gift and somehow you got one. in addition to american express
5:48 am
and visa gift cards, amazon, one of the most popular that you can get walmart, apple itunes and starbucks. >> what are tips that you give people to make sure that they make the most of those cards. >> use it as quickly as possible because a lot of people forget about it there was a survey done in 2015, a billion dollars in terms of gift card value. some merchants may not necessarily accept them after a certain amount of time or if you lose it, then the value of is that just like losing cash jot down the number if there's a number just to make sure that you can prove that you had one and if you can register a gift card on a site, do that as well. >> are there scams out there too? >> it's just like cash people want to try to get a gift card and use it if they can, and if you're able to report it lost quickly, then that person won't be able to use it. they'll shut it down beforehand. >> you have to write down the
5:49 am
code beforehand. >> exactly that's why you jot down the number on your gift card and you want to spend it all at once if you can. even if there's a purchase that's more than what you have the gift card money for or more on a gift card, make sure that you can ask the merchant. >> what if you're given a card to a store that you never shop at and you're thinking what am i going to do with this thing. >> get cash. >> how. >> you can turn it in in gift card exchange. you can get as much as 70 to 92% of the value of that gift card if you try to sell it. you could also swap it and get another gift card and you may get more of the value if you do it that way. >> regift it. >> regift it don't forget about donating it too though. >> that's true. >> particularly toward the end of the year, schools, clubs, varieties, they could use it but regifting it is a good idea
5:50 am
and even if the gift card looks like it's been in your purse for a little while, you may be able to go to the retailer and say can i exchange this for another one an then give that one. >>that's a good idea. >> thank you. >> up next on the money, a look at the news for the week ahead and later punching and kicking your way to fitness. what it takes to get fighting fit in just half an hour. >> 30 minutes i'm burning 1,000 calories
5:51 am
5:52 am
5:53 am
here's the stories coming up this week. monday is the last day of 2018 it's also national champagne day so get ready to toast the new year on tuesday the markets will be closed for new year's day. on wednesday, we'll see how factories are doing with the purchasing manager's index for september and then on thursday how much construction spending there was for the month of november and how many cars were sold in the last month of the year too on friday all eyes will be on the jobs report. we'll find out how many jobs were gained or lost. punching and kicking your way to fitness. that's a franchise chain of 740 gyms we went to one location that's jumping in to getting fit. >> 9 round kickboxing. it's a circuit workout each round is 3 minutes long it's a full body workout it's nonstop you're doing everything.
5:54 am
kicking and punches. so you're working shoulders, chest, backs and legs. so we like to throw in some push ups, we like to throw in some sit ups. >> four months and i'm down 25 pounds, just strength, endurance, stamina, everything. >> i am fast my mind is faster. my body changed. my mind changed. it's great. >> if you want to get in shape, i lost about 4 inches off my waist. it's become a lifestyle to me. >> you feel like you can accomplish something. >> you're able to come in and get the workout done and be out. that's it. >> nine rounds was co-founded ten years ago by the husband and wife team of shannon and heather hudson thank you for being here. >> thank you for having us. >> it's great to see you you met shannon when you took one of his karate classes. >> exactly i wanted to learn self-defense
5:55 am
and ended up really finding myself through fitness that form of fitness was new to me i had always done step aerobics. i'm grateful to my mom for installing a love of jane fonda in me. that was my gateway drug to fitness. all jokes aside, but i felt more powerful when i left a karate class than i had ever felt fast forward that to nine round. it was powerful for me to do that workout >> you were a professional kick boxer and boxer when you guys first started this whole thing. >> yeah. >> what lessons did you take from that? it looks like a lot. >> i won a world title and i only made $2,400 so i'm like, there has to be a better way but besides the money, i said how do i take this type of training and give it to real people but take out the worst part which is getting punched in the face it's no fun.
5:56 am
so we created this workout in 2008 on a shoe string budget it's 30 minutes. it's aer is c circuit, so you'r late. >> one guy said he burns 1,000 calories in half an hour but 500 is very common for people in 30 minutes, but if he does 1,000, that's fantastic. >> 70% of your clients are women, which is a little bit of a surprise to me. >> we were a little surprised too. when we opened it we were on a crazy low budge. we didn't have any money we anticipated it being like the karate world, but it wasn't. all of these women were coming and if you cut back to the lady speaking, she said i feel stronger after i do this workout. i feel better mentally so i'm a huge advocate for that. my own journey is exactly the same as hers my mental strength has gone up
5:57 am
increasingly parallel with my physical strength. everything i have been able to do physically more and more i have been able to do with life mentally stronger with every rep and push up and every kick and every punch. it's been a very good journey and we find that everyone is fighting something, so that's where our mission statement is in making our members stronger physically and mentally. it's a direct mental correlation. >> not to mention the stress relief. >> that too. absolute absolutely. >> how difficult is it under the franchise model? what kind of support do you provide? >> that's a get question we have turnkey for everything our top franchise owners never have kick boxed before in their long-fiber they just love people and they love fitness and they love the brand. if they do that and follow our systems, they'll do great. >> how often do customers come in 2 to 3 times a week? >> if you love yoga keep doing it but you're not going to get
5:58 am
the explosiveness. so keep doing your yoga, if you're a runner keep doing it, but 9 round gives you everything in 30 minutes. >> do you hit really hard now? >> i can i got my black belt. i did achieve that so yeah, i can actually kick someone in the head really easily. >> i might need some lessons. >> thank you for coming in. >> thank for having us. >> really appreciate it. that's the show for today. i'm becky quick. thank you for joining us next week, new year, new deals we'll have january bargains. start your year with savings we're on the money have a great one and we'll see you next year.
5:59 am
