hi, everyone welcome to "on the money." i'm becky quick. it's a lot of money when you buy a car or lease one too. the man behind the biggest free online learning platform talks about learning and education and teaching kids to excel. and toy companies are saying no to packaging. how they're doing it, will it become a trend, and will it be easier to open all of those boxes. and sneaker subscription is it right for kids the business that is booming "on the money" starts right now. >> announcer: this is "on the
5:31 am
money," your money, your life, your future. now, becky quick. we begin with car shopping as interest rates have come down, people in the market for a new car or truck are also seeing lower rates on auto loans. that's welcome news, but finding a great deal could still be a challenge. what's the deal is our cover story, and phil lebeau has more. >> if you've been to a car showroom lately, you may see that cars are not new. >> i think the fact that cars are taking longer and longer to sell is because we're not seeing real deals consumers are looking for low interest rates cash offers are not as strong as they once were. >> that may be changing. edmonds says the average low interest rate is now at the lowest this year with just under
5:32 am
6% with most paying 4% as for 0% deals, that's harder to find. it will be welcome news for automakers after the four best years ever for awe toy sales in the u.s., almost everyone in the car business expects demand to cool off especially as prices being made for new models continue go higher. >> people are still buying expensive vehicles when we look at the average transaction price, it's still north of $37,000 people are still feeling good about something in the company. >> historically consumer confidence is one of the best barometers for new car sales even if those new cars happen to be from the previous model year. phil lebeau, cnbc, "on the money." before joining the car information website he worked at
5:33 am
different auto dealerships for 12 years, so, matt, you know what you're talking about. thank you for joining us today good to see you. >> thank you i'm so happy to be with you. >> we heard from the piece bargains are hard to come by if you're in the market, what should you look for now? >> certified preowned cars i think hands down that's the best deal. you can see significant savings compared to new counterparts if somebody's looking for brand-new car, the real magic is going to be shopping dealership websites who sell that brand one guy who's more aggressive on selling that particular car is going to save you money compared to those down the street who are not. make sure you shop websites and not just the car brand. >> i always thought if i went at the end of the month i was more likely to get a deal, that they were trying to hit their
5:34 am
numbers. am i right to think that wrong to think that? >> no. what the only tricky part is they may have reached their numbers two days before the end of the month. but i'm here to dispel the myth. july is a fantastic time to buy a car. yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. there's truth to that. >> are most on calendar quarterly years or fiscal. >> end of march, november, december, those are also good time here's the thing the difference between an excellent day of the year and end of the year may not be dramatic you may save a couple of hundred buck the important thing is to get the right car at the right time. if you have a choice to buy a car on the 20th or 30th, i'm saying buy it on the 30th. >> what about the leases are they a good deal or are you getting ripped off because
5:35 am
you're putting yourself in one of those financial situations? >> i'll tell you what, years ago leases were not a good deal. i hate to say this years ago i was on a lease and i was like, i'd better not tell my mom. i was an adult working in a car dealership they had a bad reputation. not anymore. they're a way to get into a safe reliable transportation that's affordable when you think about the average american, that's what it comes down to. i want a car that will get the kids to and from work. maybe i don want to necessarily get a used car because i don't want to deal with things that come with a used car a lease can be a good option but if you're looking for own ownersh ownership, leasing is not the way to do it you'll get yourself into the cycle of leasing a car for three years and leasing a car for three years and you may never enjoy going payment free if you want to carry your family
5:36 am
around and don't care about paying every month, a lease is a good option. >> a lot of people don't want to buy a car because they hate the negotiation, going through a dealership do you have tips on negotiation in terms of doing it before you walk in the door, have a plan in mind how does it work. >> dealerships understand people want to do that online you can start with the salesperson or manager and hammer out all the prices and make sure there's no ambiguity and then go to the dealership and, you know, pay for it and drive off with the car it doesn't have to be this long traumatic beat up cycle we thought of ten years ago a lot of people can do this online and save the hassle. >> what about a tool your website talks about, a suggested price tool what is that number, where does it come from, and how should i use it >> think of the average shopper. they may say, okay, i know i want car a, but they may not know how much they should pay for it the price tool is an aggregate of millions of tractions but
5:37 am
localized to the airy you live in if you want a honda accord and live in los angeles, edmonds is going to aggregate all the prices in your area and say this is the average and this is the price. you don't want to pay above that and you don't want to get below that. >> matt, thank you very much all good tips. up ahead, khan academy keeps adding new courses find out how you can get smart for free from home. we know you all enjoy toys but why the pesky packaging may be a thing of the past. right now, though, let's stake a look at how the stockmarket ended the week wanna see something... amazing? olay body wash visibly transforms your skin from dry and dull, to strong and healthy, in just 14 days. better skin from a body wash? better believe it, with olay body.

5:41 am
i know it's offered around the globe. i know it's students and adults, but if you really had to break down who's doing what, walk us through it. >> the bulk are a little mentry school and early college they're learning these s.t.e.m. classes, especially math, science. and also humanities like history and a whole new offering in american government and politics. >> you keep offering partnerships with school districts. i just wonder, are your courses being used more by students at school than at home? >> when we started, most were students at home they were called independent learners but then we got together with teachers we called it a grassroots adoption we had teachers using can academy in their classrooms. we have all of these efficacy studies. the platform isn't just videos but exercises where kids can
5:42 am
learn at their own time and pace they can learn a lot faster. so if we let them learn at their own time and space, it's a lot easier. >> it's a chance for students to say, okay, i wasn't quite up to speed on what was happening, but i can milwaukee sure i do a little draw studying or boning up at home >> every teacher willtell you if they have a classroom of 25, 30, 35 student, all of those students are at different levels a lot of students might not be ready for the grade-level work some might be able to move ahead. the gold standard has always been personalized instruction. differentiation, allowing the teachers to be where they are. it's impossible to do with 30 students in a classroom we like to imagine we can be a tool that can empower that great teacher to meet the student where they are. some will excaccelerate forwardd the teacher will get dashboards to say, hey, they're working
5:43 am
fine, but it looks like sal is having trouble and becky's mastered that concept. maybe i can tutor. >> you're even offering free prep classes for aspiring teachers we do have a teacher shortage. >> if you're an aspiring teacher, you know about the practice exam that's taken in most states to show a teacher is competent and has the knowledge to be a teacher. now we're able to offer free official practice for the prox us to allow more teachers go into the profession. >> what's next you keep taking on this issue, this issue is there ever going to be more snow. >> that's my hope. there's really three pillars to that one is try to give world-class
5:44 am
material away for the world. another pillar is to allow people to learn at their own time and pace. and the last one is how does someone prove what they know to the world? and that could be being able to get some type of credit for the work you do, maybe college credit, and that has a big issue in lowering college costs or it may be, hey, i learned about finance or personal finance or statistical science at can academy, maybe i can get an interview or apprenticeship or job out of it. >> that's great. i love what you do, am impressed every time i hear and love what you've about done for people. >> thank you. sal kahn. up next, phasing out packaging. a lot of kids are looking for shoes for school what if sneakers arrived every few months or every few weeks? we've got that story whitens safely ulation for a 100% noticeably whiter smile. guaranteed.

. every parent knows the joy on their child's face when they open a present with their favorite toy inside, but parnls also know that feeling of dread when they have to figure out how to get the toy out of layers an layers of plastic practicing, however, that single-use plastic will be a thing of the past, at least for hasbro toys. joining us is the chief operating officer for hasbro john, you have a plan to eliminate plastic packaging over the next two years
5:48 am
all i can say is it's about time what got you guys to do it >> thank you, becky. we started several years ago on this sustainable journey beginning next year we'll start eliminating plastic from our packaging. we'll get there by 2022. we found as environmental stewards we would do everything possible to eliminate that waste. we know that many parents and children when they open the toys, discard the packaging immediately, so we wanted to take steps to really reduce that waste and reduce that plastic. >> how did that stupid plastic get in there to begin with >> the process of packaging toys is more than you think, because of the need to make sure the toy stays unbroken, that it's protected through transit and that it's safe for our consumers. when plastics came along, they
5:49 am
were really a great solution for -- >> back in the days of "the graduate." >> exactly. >> so what's the new packaging going to look like >> it's going to vary by product. in some cases, we'll just eliminate the plastic altogether in other cases, we'll redesign the packaging to substitute it to more sustainable materials. and in other cases, by redesigning the packaging will obviate the need for plastic packaging altogether. >> you're front and center when it comes to the trade war with china. that's because a few years ago 90% of the toys made for america were made in china you've been working hard to diversif diversify, move away from china, even before the trade war. how is that working for you and what is the ultimate plan. >> well, it's a complicated process, and we did undertake it several years ago to try to diversify our manufacturing out
5:50 am
of china today about 25% of our products for the united states are actually made in the united states, and by the end of this year -- next year, about 60% of our products will be made in china, but that's reducing over time as we move to other markets. our goal over the next several years is to significantly reduce the percentage of toys and games that we do make in china we appreciate the administration giving us some time and not impacting this holiday season, and we obviously -- our hope is that we're able to try to find a way to find good relationships with china because there will continue to be aportion of our products made in china. >> you know, as a parent, my job when it comes to shopping for toys has gotten a whole lot more complicated now that toys "r" us is gone. how about your job in terms of trying to reach the public what do you do right now to find a way to make sure you're seeing all the same audiences when
5:51 am
there's not that one place to go >> the fastest growing part of our business is online of course, online review helps as well. we've always been on top our industry in terms of quality people are able to see the quality of our products as a testitude of consumers. >> you don't launch them though, do you >> we've launched hasbro pulse, which is really targeted and the fan community. it's more special edition products combined with unique products and behind-the-scenes interviews with designers and filmmakers. >> john, thank you good to see you. >> thanks very much, becky. up next on "on the money," subscription boxes are great when you run out of, but what about southbound subscription boxes you can run in
5:54 am
netflix, dollar shave club, blue apron, those are a few names in the subscription business now nike, the number one sneaker retailer in the united states is stepping up, offering subscription plans for kids' sneakers, but is this really a good deal. joining us to explain is retailer expert jan niffen good to see you. >> good to see you. >> while i like the idea of shoes just showing up, there's a
5:55 am
reason i'm still going to the shoe store for kids. i need foot measurements. >> some i don't get either obviously i want my dog food and cat food to show up. i want my sham pea -- if i needed shampoo, i'd want it to show up because it's conabsumabe we use every day it doubles every year. it's a huge business for fashion, i'm not so thrilled about subscription businesses. >> why why? >> it's hard to get them involved and then it's hard to keep them involved the cost of keeping a new person is very, very high and the retention is low it's a hard business to keep running. >> because of the acquisition cost snoopd people get bored with it. >> however, i think when you're looking at nike and you're looking at kids' shoes, it's not so much fashion as it is them getting to know you better so do i think it's a good idea
5:56 am
for you to subscribe to get your kids shoes i don't know i think it's a good idea for nike to offer it to you. >> i agree if you can convince me every shoe you buy is going to be nike, you win. on one hand it's great because it's a pain to go get new shoes when they outgrow them or wear them out on the other hand i'm going to the shoe store to make sure i measure their feet every time and measuring both feet because they're not the same size. how does the subscription know do they automatically size up? >> nike has made it easy if you don't like it, you send it back. they're covering the cost of this transaction on the other hand they get to know you well. and if you're the parent and you do run and you're buying your kids on nike all the time anyway and you're going and looking aet the shoes and getting one they actually like and leaving it in your subscription basket, you're
5:57 am
much more likely to buy your own shoes right now. >> for nike, it's for kids >> so far. >> are they going to offer them for adults >> they haven't yet but they said it's a way to learn about subscription and wily are other opportunities for subscription they haven't said for what one thing they mentioned is marathoners club i can definitely say marathoners need four, five pair a year. >> they're like the frequent flyers of the shoe business. >> it's all coming anyway whether it's subscription, rental, or resale. we're moving to a different model on the stuff we're going to wear. >> more bad news for the retailer because we're going direct to the source and knocking the retailer out? >> it's bad for the department stores everybody wants to sell it to you directly why? they don't want to sell it to the store at 2550% of the value
5:58 am
when they can get it from you direct if they would send me a shoe every three months and i could put the shoe back in the bach and they would recycle it, i would feel a lot better about it it's a big win all of these direct consumer companies are looking ought all of those aspects they're going to win if their third-seller products don't lose. >> thank you. that is the show today i'm becky quick. thanks so much for joining us. next week, thinking of seeing another financial adviser? we've got some tips on how to break up with the one you're seeing right now. each week keep it right here we're om have a great weekend, and we will see you next weekend. ♪ think you need to pay prestige prices for better skin results? try olay regenerist. the rich, hydrating cream is formulated with vitamin b3 and peptides to plump skin cells, brighten, and visibly smooth wrinkles. in fact, just 1 jar has the hydrating power
