retail sales have really been strong job growth has been strong industrial production was something i think helped to lead us into this rate cut campaign if you want to call it that. powell isn't calling it a campaign industrial production isn't calling it off the map the two dissenters of the fed. >> i believe you know consumer discretionary may have gotten ahead of itself as a group there is a difference between the economy and the stock market, as we well know. >> absolutely.

when i'm looking at sectors whether i like them or not, i look at the valuation, number one, the visible earnings growth down the road and how does it look technically you kind of hit the nail on the head there, consumer discretionary is a little out of kilter >> you still like growth over value. when you say international, is that asia, europe or emerging markets? >> in answering that question, since the fed is still in rate-cut mode, we expect the dollar to nudge down here. that would say the big cap growth would do better than the smaller stocks the international space, with most of our clients, we are not

jeff, the lead story on cnbc.com right now is that investors may be betting even if the impeachment inquiry or impeemt moves forward, investors are optimistic that the stock market could go up a la 1998 when clinton was impeached. do you buy that? >> i do. it is simple to see when this announcement came out, the market one down 1% about a day or two after clinton lost here we are with another impeachment. i think the market has become desensitized they are trying to focus on the upcoming trade tensions. i don't know how much historical data we can use with clinton

yesterday who said, the worst case scenario is president pence, which the market doesn't see as that bad anyway steve, you are living through, in your home country, the united kingdom, you are living through all of this turmoil as well. yet, the ftse 100, your dow jones is up 9% this year this morning, it shows that investors can separate the political stuff from the fundamental stuff. >> reporter: brian, it is not often i disagree with you. the reason why the ftse 100 is up is because the pound is down. before the brexit vote, the pound was up it plummeted around to its low around 118 and got back up to the mid-1.20s again.

the president yesterday hinting maybe because of other headlines he wanted to distract over but it did not go over 500 or 600 points it went up what it had lost the day before what is it that we need pen to paper deal that would move the market significantly? >> i don't think it will be a major one but some sort of interim one. the earnings situation isn't very good. earnings growth for the full year with fourth quarter estimates is only an increase of 1.3% we are seeing a lot of down grades to other companies. we could have negative earnings growth this year
