year no one really wants to talk about that they'd rather not have them think their atms aren't safe recent attacks cost banks more than 3.5 million in a few months but they're the beginning of a new wave heating up overseas. >> it's just a matter of time. >> he says the secret service has been investigating training camps located outside of the united states with kingpins organizing new recruits. >> are you saying they're bringing them in and training them and then letting them loose into the united states >> yes we went to toronto canada to meet with the special unit. >> we're in the business of hacking atms because our mission

>> the street thug can sit here and collect money after money until the atm is empty. >> you can lose tens of millions and hundreds of millions of dollars very quickly. >> what can the banks do now >> test the atm like a criminal would before a criminal has a chance to. >> for on the money, i'm andrea day. >> joining us now is the field chief technology officer at a data security and analytics firm thank you for being here. >> thank you so much. >> so the video is shocking. you see the thieves walking in in broad daylight and taking the money? what's the broader impact? >> banks are struggling with visibility and they're trying to make sure that they're protected. from a consumer standpoint they're protected and ensured and it's not like consumers are losing huge amounts of money for this. >> the banks will back it up but if the banks are vulnerable you wonder what is next? >> yeah. we're seeing banks are pretty
5:35 am
protected from an information and cyber security stand point but it's state and local governments and university and school districts that are going to hit hard. >> what are hackers looking for. you go to the banks because that's where the money is. >> because they can data and you can get them to pay you. it's partly because the organizations that have trouble keeping an eye on their data and keeping it protected they can't function look at the city of atlanta and the city of baltimore. >> so a school or a city get some database lock down. a criminal comes in and says we want a ransome. >> you can get paid anonymously. >> what are they doing >> they are putting in better protections with visibility. they're trying to make sure that they have access to what and when something weird happens, they can identify it quickly and hopefully respond to it but it's
5:36 am
hard. >> i can see if they don't have access to the databases but should i as a consumer and citizen be concerned because they have stolen my information that hasn't been kept safe what happens to it next? >> absolutely. as a citizen, visibility is everything too you want to reduce the uncertainty. everything is fine until it's not. keep an eye on your bank statements and your devices up to date. don't use the same password everywhere and keep an eye on things if you have visibility you're better protected all of the credit data was stolen they said at the time they'll
5:37 am
pay you $125. >> sure. we should be outraged. it's one thing if an organization or company leaks your data and you can say i'm not going to do business with them anymore but we don't have a choice we need to be demanding better protections. privacy and protections for our data is seen as a right and we need to demand more of that. >> even if you were part of that and your data is stolen maybe you haven't seen the repercussions yet. does that mean you won't see it at some point? >> you probably will just because you haven't seen it and you don't know that it's being misused doesn't mean it's not happening. >> what would be a tipoff? >> you should keep an eye on your credit and bank statements and the things that are valuable to you. >> what's the worst case scenario >> identity theft is a big
5:38 am
problem. money theft is a big problem one of the interesting things that we're facing now as consumers is where is all of our data where is all the information that we're giving to apps and websites it's important to ask anybody show me the data you have on me and delete it if i ask you to and only sell it if i give you permission too that's one of the basic privacy rights a lot of state governments are starting to put in place. >> thank you for joining us. it's good to see you up next for on the money, gas prices jumped at the pump after the recent saudi oil attacks but will the prices stay high and what else is seeing the heat and later, before you apply to college there's another application you should fill out first. what it is and how it could help pay next year's tuition bill right now let's have a look at how the stock market ended the week

>> it looks like they have measuring this we saw our third largest increase in a single day in a national average in the last decade. that was very substantial and came very quickly. national average rose 13 cents a gallon now new issues have unfolded and motorists in certain areas of the country mainly the west coast are going to be seeing further increases not to do with the attacks but seasonality. >> is that a way of saying that your prices dropped down even if they have peaked any time soon >> that may start happening in some areas of the country. and the saudis don't keep to their time lines to restore production that could continue to impact oil in the weeks ahead. >> let's talk about other situations other places that you could see energy prices rise
5:43 am
do you expect that you'll see higher prices on that front as well does that matter >> well, certainly they'll be a little bit higher but a lot of it has less to do on attacks on saudi arabia and more on how it can be utilized by vessels so they're likely to be more expensive and we'll see more of an increase as we get closer to that date. >> we saw airline stocks plumet on the news of attacks on saudi arabia but thankfully a lot of the increase in the price has been back up for the time being. airlines take several months to react to changes in fuel prices

so the fact that the attacks are temporary will probably mean that most air travelers will not see any impact. >> saudi arabia is the world's second largest oil producer. how much has to do with the idea that the united states is now pumping so much oil itself >> there's a lot to be said that certainly the u.s. is helping to mitigate the attacks to some degree if this was 10 or 15 years ago it would have been a much bigger impact to gas prices so that's absolutely a major change >> patrick, thank you for your

fortunately, senior personal finance correspondent sharon epperson is here and can explain all of this to us. you have to be thinking about next year right now. why is it so important why do we have to do it right away >> it's called the fasfa and it's important because it's a free application for federal student aid and you want any aid you can. it's important to look at this now. this is the form you need to get grants, loans, work study programs and in 2018 the government awarded $122 billion in these programs. nearly 13 million students took part in it 6,000 schools participated so if you want to get financial aids the best way to do it is to fill out this form and make sure that it's accurate and that you fill it out properly so that states,
