5:31 am
>> we begin with toys for big kids if you didn't get a gadget that you had your eye on as a gift or if you're just looking for something a little fun and new, cnet's senior managing editor dan ackerman has some new tech for the new year, and dan, it's great to see you >> great to be here. >> you come bearing good gifts, things that really caught your eye. >> if you didn't get what you want for christmas, the best thing to do is go out right after and get it for yourself. >> this is interesting this is a new service and a piece of hardware from google called stadia. they wanted to build a netflix for games, where you didn't need to have a console, like an xbox in your living room, you connect to the internet and play the game streaming they'll sell you this little controller to do it with and you can hook it up to your phone so you can play these console-style very high-end game on your phone. >> who makes the game? or can i play activision -- >> a lot of games from a lot of different publishers you buy the game as you normally would, but instead of buying a
5:32 am
disc for your xbox, you're buying the streaming stadia version. >> that sounds like really bad news for the makers of game consoles >> i said five or six or seven years ago, these consoles would eventually go away and everything would be replaced by netflix-style streaming. i was probably one generation too early, but it's starting to happen now >> let's talk about people who do like the game consoles. >> this is super fun this year everyone wanted to play this when it came into the office this is the sega genesis mini. it's a micro recreation of the original sega genesis console, right down to the fact that it has a little console slot there. you don't put anything in it it has like two dozen games
5:33 am
built in >> like one? >> like "altered beast" and all the ones that launched with the genesis 20-something years ago, and everyone considers it the greatest classic console of all time and it really comes with this pitch-perfect recreation of the original controller. >> how do you hook it up to your machine? just a couple of wires >> just plug this into here and that into your tv. >> and that's it >> what about this appletv thing? >> streaming tv. obviously, everyone's got a roku or fire tv stick or something. the higher-end version is the appletv. this version can do, you know, 4k, and hdr, and it's got a really cool remote and it also -- because everybody's got to have games, they have a new gaming service called apple arcade, so you can play games on your tv through this, kind of like the stadia. and you can use a regular game
5:34 am
controller or the little stick that it comes with and if you want to get a nicer, more polished experience, then you get with a $50 roku, you could spend, you know, $170 or so and get the 4k appletv. >> what is this thing? >> this is the microsoft surface, which we've had for years. this is the tablet and you clip on the keyboard. this is the surface prox which is the newest version. it's one of the few things people have e-mailed me about over the next six months and said, when is this coming out? i really want one. >> why >> it's a little thinner and lighter, it has a qualcomm chip inside, almost like a phone, really long battery life >> that's lighter than my ipad >> there's a secret stylus hidden inside and you can pull this out and draw on the screen and you're not going to lose it because it goes right back in there and pop it down and fold the whole thing up and take it with you >> that's literally lighter than an ipad. >> it's basically a phone in a laptop body. >> where's the fun can you call on it >> you can put a sim card in there, yes
5:35 am
>> what's this one >> that is not just a regular kindle, that is the kindle oasis, which is their super high-end model >> just for reading books? >> for reading books but i had a regular kindle for so many years and i never wanted to get this fancier, more expensive version that's like $250 i finally broke down during amazon prime day over the summer and i can't believe how much better it is >> what's better >> the screen is a little bit bigger, but the quality is so much better. it's got these physical buttons for turning the pages, rather using your fingers and if i switch hands, it reverses itself, i can use it either handed on the subway. >> the quality of the screen is better it's a little bit bigger for me, who usually has to bump up the size of the text really big, i was able to go back to normal size text >> fountain of youth this thing is >> it was an indulgence, but i am so glad i splurged on it. >> here are ear buds and everybody's got the apple ear buds, the wireless -- >> the air pods. >> what are these things >> people love air pods, but they only really work on apple phones and they're frankly hard to find a lot of the time. the big secret is, if you're listening to music, they're not that great they're not great music head phones
5:36 am
these are the jobbers 75-ts, and everyone has discovered, because these are selling out all over the place, they're about the same as the high-end air pods, $170, but sound really good with music, they have noise canceling, you can hook up alexa and the google assistant through them, so you can do all that smarthome stuff right from your ears and it's an alternative for people who don't have an iphone or don't want the airpods and they do the same thing and frankly they sound better. don't tell apple >> dan, thank you so much. all great gifts. always good to see you >> always my pleasure. >> up next, we're "on the money. author deepak chopra's new book explains mindfulness, meditation, and even money what he's learned on his journey. and later, financial resolutions to ring in the new year, whether you want to save more, spend less, or pay down debt, we will have tips for reaching your 2020 money goals right now, let's take a look at how the stock market ended the week [♪] lookin.to simplify your skin care routine without sacrificing results? try olay total effects. one dose provides more vitamin b3 than 50 cups of kale and improves 7 key areas of visibly healthy skin. try olay total effects.
5:37 am
we hear a lot today about the value of wellness and awareness. deepak chopra has been focused on both for the last 45 years. his new book is called "meta human: unleashing your potential. when i spoke with him, he had a surprising declaration about the benefits of yoga and meditation. >> i've never been sick in my life i'm 73 next month and i'm in perfect health >> i mean, if that's not an argument for listening to some of this, i don't know what is.
5:38 am
what do you do every day how does meditation work for you? >> first of all, i take life as a play and secondly, i am addicted to yoga and meditation. i do about two hours of that in the morning. but in truth, i never move away from my center of being, no matter what the situation is i'm independent of situations, circumstances, people, events, interpretations, validation, invalidation and criticism, all of that. >> you have studied people for a long time, too and you know what it is they want and what they need. what's the number one thing people say if they could change? >> they want to be happy happiness is the goal of all other goals. and today we have a lot of
5:39 am
actually good, scientific data on what makes people happy one is the set point, their attitude to life do they see life as a problem or as an opportunity. the second is resources including financial resources that add about 12% to your daily happiness expense. and the third is meaning and purpose. if you have these three components, and you're flexible, you're all set >> well, let's focus down on the financial aspects of that, since we're a money show what can people do about their financial health what can they -- >> i think the first thing they should do is not spend money that they haven't earned to buy things that they don't need, to impress people that they don't like the second, you know, my mother told me when i was growing up
5:40 am
and getting to be a young man, put away 10% every month, of whatever you earn and let it be there because, everything is a spiral it kind of comes back to, sometimes it evolves don't worry about it stay put with sensible savings and investment >> that makes a lot of sense but what about issues that are a little out of your control what if it's educational, expenses, what about if it's health expenses? what do you tell people on those? >> i think you always find the best opportunity that you can within your means. i know that, you know, that the $2.2 trillion that circulates in the world every day, only 2% goes to provide services and goods. the rest is making money off money off money off money. and it ultimately leads to insanity and hysteria. they should relax, understand,
5:41 am
get the best advice. and then let it go, enjoy the day. if you're constantly worrying about the future and not present for now, when the future arrives, you won't be present for it >> my thanks to deepak chopra. up next, we're "on the money. millions of americans have made financial resolutions for 2020 but fewer than 50% expect to actually keep them for the full year how to make and then stick to your money goals and later, the holidays aren't over yet. if you're looking for a bottle to help bring in 2020, well, guess what we've got the top picks for under $20. to neutralize harmful plaque bacteria and help reverse early gum damage. gum detoxify, from crest. robinwithout the commission fees. so, you can start investing today wherever you are - even hanging with your dog. so, what are you waiting for? download now and get your first stock on us. robinhood.
5:45 am
nearly 99 million people are likely to make a financial resolution for 2020 according to a new wallet hub survey. but sticking to a new year's resolution can be tough, whether it's losing weight or adding to your savings joining us with more on the financial goals that consumers are setting for 2020 and how you can keep them is senior personal finance correspondent, sharon epperson and sharon, it's great to see you. >> it's great to be here >> i don't know what's tougher, trying to stick to the savings, different financial goals that we have or the weight loss ones, but what are some of the most popular financial goals that people are setting >> the most popular financial
5:46 am
goals start with saving more money. a lot of people want to save more money they want to pay down their debt they also want to spend less the key, of course, to doing all of it is, you've got to figure out where you are right now with a budget and only four in ten have a budget >> only four in ten people have a budget >> according to the national foundation for credit counseling, yes. you've got to start at that point. it's great to have these resolutions and these goals, but now where you stand and how you're going to attack them. >> i understand where people want to save more, especially when you've just gone on some crazy spending spree and bought presents for everyone you know what the consumers do to try to stick to those resolutions how do you make that sort of resolve stay with you? >> the thing that is really important is to have that emergency fund but a lot of people get scared by the fact that financial advisers say you have to have six months to a year's worth of your living expenses saved try just one month how about if you can add one month of your pay to your emergency fund, set that as a goal for 2020.
5:47 am
you may not get there, but at least it's a target that you have and figure out what percentage you'd have to put away each paycheck to get there, to have one month's pay fully in that emergency fund and then where you put it is key. even if it's just 2% that you're getting in terms of interest, it's better than 0.2%. so you want to make sure you put it in a high-yield savings account. and look at your long-term savings and where you can add to there. you can put $19,500 into a 401(k) in 2020 that's something to shoot for if you can do it. >> what about paying down debt what do you need to do to try to tackle that problem? >> let's try to come up with a number, a number that works best for you. but in 2020, let's say 20% of your credit card debt, you'll try to pay down that much. maybe you only do it on one credit card, maybe you do it for the overall debt figure out what's going to give you the most push, are you going to pay off those small balances to hit your momentum, or hit that high-interest credit first
5:48 am
to make sure you're not compounding that interest? it works different for different people of course, you want to reduce that interest and reduce the debt as quickly as possible, but for some people, they want to pay that smaller balance off and one way to think about it is to do a balance transfer with a 0% interest card >> spending less is tough, especially if you don't have a budget, and i can't believe that the majority of people don't have a budget, but how old you tell people to go about doing this again, baby steps getting you towards those goals. >> this may be the first step you need to take, so you are spending less and have the money to then pay down your credit card debt or your debt and also to save more money but one of the things you want to look at is where you stand, again. the last three months, gather all of the bills that you have and make a list of the recurring expenses rank that list in terms of needs and wants. the most important, put it top that would be your housing, food, health care, and then those things that you may not need, that you really want that streaming service, the last three months, if you didn't, why
5:49 am
is it still on there challenge every single expense that you've written down there and at the bottom of the list where those recurring expenses are truly just wants, figure out what you can cut back on, that will give you enough money to start saving some or pay down more debt and that's a habit you can continue for the rest of your life. >> that's a good first step. sharon, thank you very much. >> sure. >> that's sharon epperson. up next "on the money," a look at the news for the week ahead and are you looking for a new wine to bring in the new year? we've got some great options to enjoy before the ball drops. robinhood believes now is the time to do money.

5:54 am
>> oh, $11.99. and a percentage of those profits go to supporting education for disadvantaged kids in the south african wine region >> that's fantastic! >> that makes you feel good, too. >> is it harder and harder to find cheap wines given the tariff situation >> it's going to get really hard to find cheap european wines the latest tariff situation is they're talking 100% tariffs on all wines coming out of europe if those tariffs go through, it's going to be very tough and very interesting to see how u.s. companies will react >> will it be good news for anyone who's in wine country >> it could help california wine sales. it could also be that california prices will also lift, because the competition has gone so widely up, why not raise your prices too, a little bit it could be more expensive wine for everybody. >> yikes >> what about this cabernet? >> this is california. this is joel got, a wonderful producer of cabernet and other wines in california. this is a cabernet it's sourced from all over california from napa, sonoma, lodi. >> i like that, too.
5:55 am
>> i love this, it has so much like luscious fruit and it's not aggressively tannic and delicious to drink and 15 bucks or so. >> this one, i can't believe you brought -- >> this is not wine. this is not wine >> i saw that. >> it's good for you as a morning drink. it's black pepper vodka. it's great in a bloody mary. >> what about raw? >> well, raw, it's -- if you take a tiny sip, i will suggest you take a tiny sip, you really do get that pepperiness. >> such peer pressure. >> a combination of black peppers and serrano peppers. it's not hot, it doesn't burn your mouth, but gives you that peppery flavor and when you think about it in a peppery flavor, it's spectacular. it's a small producer based out of charleston, south carolina. >> okay, it's not as gasoliny as vodka usually is, i'll give it that >> and then, you have to have some bubbles >> yes >> for new year's eve. >> and for new year's eve -- >> this is the drama part. >> and i will tell you that the secret in advance to whether things foam over or not is if they're cold enough. >> too cold or cold enough
5:56 am
>> if they're -- see, this is a little not cold enough >> it's going to bubble. >> it's probably going to foam up, over >> you did it! you pulled it off. >> of course, if it's cold, it condenses everything and doesn't explode as quickly >> if you want your champagne to explode, make sure it's room temperature and it go everywhere this is rosé and it's a beautiful sort of shade of coral pink >> how much is this one? >> this is about 50 bucks. this is a splurge. it's about 50 bucks right now. if those tariffs go through, you're looking at like $100, which is crazy >> so buy now. >> buy your champagne now, you know, this is the time i mean -- >> oh, that's good, too! cheers >> happy holidays! happy new year, happy everything >> and ray, thank you very much for being here with us >> i'm thrilled. >> you've been a great friend over the years, and i appreciate you coming in today. >> i'm always happy to be here and always happy to bring wine >> you're invited back to any house anytime. folks, that is the show for today. i'm becky quick, thank you so much for joining us. now, this is where we usually say that we will see you next week, but we're sad to say this is our last show
