season as well joining me now, dory wily. let's talk about this market that cannot seem to go down. what does this say about sentiment if the market does shrug everything off >> that's a good way to put it it did fall off a bit and take a breather i think there was some profit taking and the coronavirus outbreak kind of gave it an excuse to take a breather. notdo not downplaying the outbreak i think next week will be very important. the market seems to be looking a lot more forward than it is backward on expectations which is not typical but it seems to be very bullish about 2020 >> this is very much the accentuate the positive, elimina

eliminate the negative and don't mess with mr. in between the market has really done nothing but go higher for months now. >> yes and no. there has been good news and good earnings. there has been a lot of expansion getting high in a lot of areas this is getting to be a tough market to find your spot you want to buy good companies and catch the upside but the quality companies should hopefully minimize some of the down side. we will have a correction here it should be volatile. we won't just go up and up in 2020 i think we'll have a good year but two-thirds of the time after a great year like last year, your forward return in the market is somewhere around 6% to 10%. >> at this point, should the bulls be hoping for some sort of a pull back? i ask because it seems as though the threat of the middle east conflict and war and boots on

let's rehash what we said. there is a lot to consider right now. where exactly are you focused given the coronavirus? >> as we were saying before, the vaccines has been a consolidated space. there are not that many companies working in that space. you do have a crop of smaller companies using what i would argue would be newer technologies to create vaccines. if you look at broadly speaking, the development of vaccines among smaller companies versus larger companies, it is up about five fold. it is up about 100% in smaller companies. >> the industry dynamic we've been focused so much on, at least since ebola is oncology. it takes an outbreak like this to put the focus back on

infectious disease what types of companies would you be looking for in this environment? >> sure. it is interesting. you do see these outbreaks they can be self-limiting which is why it took so long to see an ebola vaccine. i think one of the most interesting things is looking at messenger rna as a way to develop vaccines basically telling the body, giving the body protein instructions to the immune system that's a different approach, which is taking a piece of the virus, giving it to somebody and helping the body form immunity >> it is the smaller, mid-cap companies that flourish. they are not the ones that can actually get the whole thing done they are a small piece of the

pie. large tech biotech has a part in this process, right? >> right when you look at vaccines, in general, there is a lot of technology infused you can see companies that are nimbal and react and can take things all the way back. think about how many people you need to test if a vaccine is working over a large time. >> what are the large tech and bios you would be looking for. >> so merck, glaxco, manafee there are about five vaccine manufacturers that control the market pfizer is another one. and another company spun out of cfl. there are a handful of emerging

million people or more around the world die of ordinary influenzas you have to treat it as a potentially difficult thing. it can harm more people in unknown ways that creates certain measures and those are real economic effects. the psychology of possibly something going on causes disruptions. this has been largely contained to china for now what we remember -- issues like sars in 2002, 2003, there were significant economic effects, market effects but they were very temporary we were saying off air about getting more questions now about wuhan flu than about a trade war which was going to be fundamentally important to shaping the economy.

all of this will prove temporarily and will prove a set back largely for asia markets which we think of as an opportunity for rebound when this is overwith >> conflict in the middle east, the threat of coronavirus, more conflict around the world. the market doesn't go down the path of least resist tenyeni to the upside. tell me i'm wrong. >> a couple of years of worry has left a lot of money on the sidelines. we do believe we'll see a rebound in corporate profits we expect manufacturing trade and industrial activity to rebound within 2020. the u.s. stock market has gotten a long way towards discounting that already in a 30% year really does.

around the rest of the world, we think confidence is lacking some it will come back. this will focus on china and asia and is probably interrupting that rebound. we think it is coming. the question is how much return do you get out of the story i just told? >> after a year like last year i want to put that up again. it will be a week full of catalysts coming up. on wednesday and thursday, we'll probably get like 30 companies each of those days there will be no shortage of headlines and companies. is this now an earnings-driven market this year >> it is where earnings will be late in 2020 into 2021 after a year like last year, the market is looking ahead typically six months if it is seeing that our earnings estimates for 2 q, 3 q.

at the end of 2019 those don't look like outrageous growth rates those can get us more gains. the fact that credit markets, rate markets are really restrained worried enough that we keep rates this low is helpful. i do think it is a little trouble we are seeing the rate and it has been mostly a u.s. story. we don't think this will be a return here anything like 2019 confirming this recovery getting past the latest worry of the coronavirus. we'll have a couple of gains >> do valuations concern you >> i think if we go substantially higher in the u.s.

good morning and welcome to "squawk box" live from the marketsite in times square joe, becky and andrew are on their way back from the world economic forum in davos. our guest host is a cnbc contributor. checking on the futures market pointing higher by about 60 points or so for the dow the s&p and the dow are a little negative all close to all-time highs. the nasdaq had a fresh one just yesterday at the close treasury yields, 1.73 or so on the 10-year. down from the start of the week. we are at 1.80 on friday's close.
