jobs let's take a look at bonds the treasury yield 10-year at 1.3%. much more on the markets in a minute first, the latest on ida today, president biden is headed to louisiana to survey the damage done by the hurricane. he has pledged full government assistance to southern states directly hit by the storm as well as the northeast where record rain and flooding have claimed dozens of lives. tracie potts joins us live in washington with the latest tracie >> reporter: seema, good morning. good morning the president gets a first hand look today of the damage of the storm and a look ahead at what it will take to rebuild. in louisiana today, president biden will tour neighborhoods devastated by hurricane ida and

send help and figure out how to mitigate the impact for the next storm. now, the president added that the storm damage and historic flooding and wildfires out west were all further evidence of climate change seema. >> it will be a long road to recovery tracie potts, thank you. now to some of the morning's big corporate headlines. kristina partsinevelos is joining us with more >> reporter: good morning, seema. you remember when every morning there was another big headline about a spac deal? now we're seeing evidence of a potential fallout. dow jones industrial average reports the broad selloff wiped out $75 billion of the value of companies that came through the public blank check acquisitions known as spac. that index is down 26% in six months in earnings news, docusign with

better than expected results you can catch dan springer on "squawk box" at 8:10 a.m. eastern and broadcom beating expectations they are pointing to strong demand for the chips because of the adoption of 5g technology. seema. >> broadcom up 12% kristina, thank you. now back to the broader market the jobs report out at 8:30 a.m. eastern and likely to command a lot of attention from wall street to washington after gaining nearly 2 million jobs in the past two months, hiring likely slowed in august as the surge in cases of the delta variant cut into demand for things like travel and entertainment. non-farm payroll forecast to risen to 720,000 last month

versus 943,000 in july the range of estimates are from 3 375,000 to over 1 million. the unemployment rate is expected to drop to 5.4% in july let's get to jay bryson. this is crucial, jay, as what the fed can do next. >> it is critical here the fmoc meeting is on september 22nd they will look at the report here and as you get another print of 900,000 as we did in the last two months, that potentially opens up the door to a taper in the september meeting. the other hand, the lower estimates are correct at 300,000, you can taper in september off the table. >> inflation and consumer

confidence at a six-month low. how are you using the other economic reports to get a sense of what we'll see in today's jobs report? >> there certainly is a lot of noise in all of those different economic catindicators one thing we get is the pmi in new york and philadelphia. if you look at the service sector component of those reports, that's actually quite strong there's a lot of reason to think this report could be low if you look at those reports, that also would suggest that the service sector hiring held up well in august you know, there is a lot of noise here now we will see what it prints we are thinking we will get a number around 750,000. >> the unemployment benefits are starting to expire depending on the state you live in, jay, at the same time, companies are thinking when should they allow employees back to work

how do you think these factors are having a effect on the jobs story here in the u.s. >> you know, i think in general, those sorts of things depress the number that doesn't mean it will be a negative number. if people are still concerned going back to the office because of covid and data shows 2 million people are saying i'm not going back to work right now because of covid, if that happens, it has two things one, you don't get the increase in terms of employment in the household survey and the other thing it brings the unemployment rate down. people are not out there looking for work that causes the unemployment rate to come down. a bunch of cross currents here because of the expiration of benefits and the covid fears >> and companies are not sure exactly what type of -- what the real plan is some companies are allowing employees to come back this fall goldman is saying early 2022

>> yeah, absolutely. you keep seeing this get pushed back further and further with return to the office another thing we're seeing, anecdotally, companies are cancelling conventions and cancelling meetings and things of that nature if that continues to happen, what you will see is that will hurt the travel industry and hurt leisure and hospitality there are certainly a lot of risks out there as it relates to the labor market. >> you are seeing that show up the weekly occupancy datai follow every thursday and it has been declining for the last four weeks which shows fewer people are checking in at hotels. jay, thank you for joining us and walking through the preview of the jobs report coming up on "worldwide exchange." call it the booze indicatindica.

spirits maker reporting strong results this year the return of bars and restaurants boosting the profit margins for alcohol sales and consumers purchasing for at-home consu consumption. joining me is chairman and ceo of the north american company. >> good to be here >> alcohol sales were strong during the pandemic and people opting for home delivery as the markets open, people are returning to bars. how much would you credit that to the big boost you saw in the revenue this quarter >> quite a bit globally our sales pretty much rebounded well beyond pre-pandemic levels. really led by the united states. we were up 16% we passed the $2 billion sales

mark for the first time. convenience and premium. these are the trends that drove the market people really love having alcohol and spirits and brands they love delivered at home. they are buying more premium brands and premium types of drinks to make cocktails it is still a trend. now that on premises is reopening, we are not seeing the in-home store sales slow down as we thought it would. it has been a record year and a lot of our brands which is the trusted brands consumers turn to jameson. glen levit >> you have a diversified portfolio brand. some of my favorites as well how are you thinking about the delta variant? we see certain cities respond with restrictions. is that an effect of how much

people spend >> because people cannot travel and because people in some parts of the country where the delta variant is really more difficult, people are staying home they have the disposable income and spending it on themselves and on home entertainment. whether they can go out or stay in, we're just seeing a lot of them experience spirits as a way to enjoy time with each other. >> pernod shares are up 18% year to date. another issue, ann, raising prices from toilet paper and hormel with food is that something pernod is planning on doing? >> it is not just the demand, but input costs are going up not just in raw materials, but distribution costs and supply chain costs. there is inflationary pressure

you are seeing pricing across the board. it is needed consumers are willing to pay that premium and doing it the smart way is what we're looking at here. i will tell you it is modernizing the industry we are getting data savvy and better understanding at what price points people are willing to pay for what occasions. it is going to take that -- i saw a lot of that in fncg. it is not coming to the alcohol industry. >> seltzer white claw whatever it may be what is the most destructive trend and how is pernod trying to capitalize on that? >> there is a lot of beverage consumption moving away from beer it is moving to seltzer. it is moving to spirits and

champagne. champagne is through the roof. we are gaining drinking occasions from beer. it is helping seltzer and spirits. >> when you look at the competitive risk facing the company. it is high raw material costs and inflation and growing your market share when the restrictions are changing on the regular basis. ann, from your perspective, what is the top challenge what keeps you up at night >> what keeps me up is making sure i continue to deliver the brands our consumers are demanding. it is about getting sure we get the right supply in the right stores in the right hands and right restaurants. that ability to forecast is pushing the industry and pushing us as pernod we have a huge transformation agenda around analytic data to be able to anticipate that it is something that if we're

same day as movie theaters all eyes are on the film it is a marvel movie everyone is projecting around $40 million plus to beat the labor day weekend opening record, it has to beat 2007's "halloween" which did $26 million in the opening weekend and $30 million for the four days friday through monday for the labor day holiday. >> paul, the last time you and i talked, you say you see a rebound in movie ticket sales. people are going to the theater. with the delta changi changing what are you seeing? >> people are really interested in the movies. if they want to see a movie, it is the emotional connection because some of the movies have done quite well like "free guy" with ryan reynolds that movie has earned over $200 million globally that continues to be a great hit

holding week after week with great business last weekend, "candy man" opened quite well better than expected if movies are opening better than expected, it means the marketplace is interested. the consumers want to go to the movie theater, but they have to have a great reason. audiences are selective in what they choose to see in the theater. i think "shang-chi" will do great in theaters. it is only available in theaters if you have the fear of missing out, you do to the theaters. >> your enthusiasm alone makes some of us want to watch what about mask mandates mandating vaccines has the industry figured out where they stand on this or is it really up to each individual theater and the city and state and restrictions >> it is about that. it is up to the individual i think the good news is for movie theaters, i have not heard

of one single incident of anything related to covid happening in a movie theater that's good news i think the theater owners realize how important it is to provide a safe and secure environment for patrons they have done a good job of that in the challenging year studios are moving the films around we saw this recently with "top gun" and "mission impossible" latest that is because tom cruise wants to travel the world to really get out there and talk about the movie and his enthusiasm, i think, is what is really important. he is a big part of the marketing. if he is not out traveling, they will not do it yet they are waiting, tom cruise, and paramount, waiting also for tom cruise to travel

wa weak in japan, the stocks closing higher after the prime minister said he would not run in the upcoming leadership election nikkei up 2% on the day. what else has been moving? bitcoin has been a big point of attention for the market higher by around 4% over the past week. week to date is higher up 10% not a great week for credit card stocks look at visa and american express. down 3% just this week the two worst performing stocks on the dow credit card names not having a great start to the month of september. to the other headlines this morning. kristina partsinevelos joining us with those. kristina >> good morning. you have japan's prime minister pushing forward with the ipo rather than september a merger offer from western digital kioxia was led by bank cap in

>> aren't you defining a monopoly >> yes good to see you. two big trading announcements from china in the last 24 hours. eunice yoon has more from beijing. eunice >> reporter: thank you, seema. china is setting up a new stock exchange here in beijing it is opening up its futures trading to foreign investors yesterday's, president xi jinping announced the plans for the stock exchange the focus is on supporting innovation oriented sme. smaller companies. the csrc, the stock regulator, said it was positively and resolutely implementing the plan the regulator said the board is going to include select tier board shares the board is a precursor or

board that has been around in beijing for eight years or so. not particularly successful, but now a transfer of some of the shares to the beijing stock exchange likely one of the reasons why analysts say this is a rebranding effort for the new third board to the beijing stock exchange on the second day of trading, it will be capped at 30%. that is meant to help attract and fund some smaller chinese companies that as we all know have now some restrictions on their potential to look at the overseas markets such as new york for potential fund raising. separate to that, the government today unveiled it is opening up

the doors further for its futures trading. so the authorities said they will launch more futures contracts to include shipping contracts and launch a yuan commodities future market. plan to launch pilot schemes for ipr securities and open to foreign investors in domestic trading. the vice chairman of the crsc said they do think it would be good for the country to have a greater role in international pricing when it comes to commodities and also play a bigger role in the global financial markets more broadly seema. >> what are the implications for the investors that like to trade stocks in china? >> reporter: well, i think that what we could potentially see is

already maybe not as much selection when it comes to the chinese stocks that could be available in the u.s we have known that because of the restrictions that the chinese government as well as the u.s. government has been putting on the chinese companies. what we're seeing with the beijing stock exchange is a way for chinese companies to say if i can't go overseas and i have more opportunities here in beijing, i'll choose beijing or shanghai or qi zhen as shengzhe >> eunice yoon, thank you. interesting story. sticking with china. more signs the world's largest economy may be slowing slumping in conditraction in

august the cac falling 40% in august from 55% in july the lowest level since the pandemic first wave in april of last year. the survey focuses on smaller firms in coastal china is in line with the official government pmi out this week let's break it down with dewardric mccneal. what is your take on the chinese economy? >> good morning, seema thank you for having me. i think some of this can be easily explained as we heard by the covid outbreaks that happened in the month of august. you know, china has a zero tolerance policy with aggressive testing and tracing and stay-at-home orders which will

impact factory orders and con su consumption. you raise a good point the economy is slowing the real question will be is what does this final order of 2021 look like we should be prepared for less growth and slowing now to your earlier point about what china will do about it, the people's bank of china made it clear they will not adjust the way they have been managing the economy. there won't be any stimulus juice to the broader economy, but targeted things we see relending program they announced earlier this week to try to get local banks to loan to small and medium size enterprises. that's the buzz here the small and medium enterprises which have been hard hit >> do you think this could change china's recent efforts around regulatory crackdown and

other restrictions that the government has been putting in place? >> i think those things are fairly locked. i think china is playing a long game here and not allowing for a quarter or two of tightening to really change what the long-term trajectory is. some of the announcements we see is china saying we have a model we're comfortable trying and we're going to push forward. we have less and less trust of the access to the western capital markets will be. a lot of the stuff is what china is doing for china >> you heard the report from eunice yoon launching two trading platforms. what does that tell you about chinese looking at the financial markets and localizing it? >> i really believe that china believes that capital markets at home are not ast mature as they can be and should be given the

political environment. all of this trends toward china trying to do more for china and they want a lot of foreign investors to put their money in china, not in new york or london we'll see how this goes. this is what they're thinking. >> back to regulation. biggest names like alibaba to baidou what is your outlook over the selloff? >> i have said that i would still wait to see what's going to happen in this sector before i jump in. look, what china has signalled here is common prosperity and busting up monopolies is a long-term effort of th we are just seeing the beginning of this. every week is something new. if i'm international investor,

labor day could bring heavy travel traffic this year as the cdc recommended unvaccinated americans not travel at all. for more on what to expected, let's bring in vikkie walker senior travel reporter vikkie, good to see you. i watched the data points in the recent weeks hotel occupancy is now at 51% and then the tsa numbers show fewer people are boarding flights. are people rethinking if they should get out there >> thank you for having me we are starting to see that slowdown of summer travel. at the beginning of the summer, the travel industry was really excited for rising vaccination rates and lower hospitalization rates. this was supposed to be the summer of travel people were extremely excited to get back out there and to travel

internationally and domestically now we're starting to see a slowdown because of the few things obviously that is due to the coronavirus situation in the u.s., but also more people from what i'm seeing in my reporting, people are more likely to want to stay home going into labor day and going into the fall. more people want to stay closer to home, rather. >> how has that affected prices? i have seen the average cost of hotel rooms come down. are there good deals >> there are always good deals that is important to know. flight deals can happen at any point. i tell people this all the time. there is no secret sauce for booking those cheap flight deals. you just have to be ready to book when you see a cheap fare

we are always seeing flights to europe around $400 business class flights to europe sometimes around $1,500 to $1,800 the flights from miami to orlando hover $50 to $70 and even though we see the slowdown in travel, the flight deals, hotel deals are still there. >> you have to hunt for the deals. what do you make of the dguidane from the cdc over the stay at h home do people respond to the guidance from the cdc? >> i will say it is important to know this guidance is not unsurprising the cdc has consistently said if

you are unvaccinated to number one, getvaccinated, but avoid doing things that would put you in contact with other unvaccinated people, but also vaccinated people. going into the labor day holiday, it will be interesting to see if we see a rebound in air travel or if we see a continuous slowdown. again, it is important to note we have been seeing the slowdown in air travel for the last couple of weeks or so which is the complete opposite of what we were seeing in the early summer where we were hitting airline travel well over 2 million every day. >> hottest destination right now, vikkie? >> hottest destination right now? i would say parts of the caribbean. mexico city. europe is a really big destination right now. people are going to paris, rome,

the focus for the market this week the jobs report the economy likely added 720,000 non-farm jobs last month the jobless rate at 5.2% joining us now is joanne feeney. the stakes seem to be high if the jobs report is too strong, then questions around how that moves up the fed timetable and if it is weak, we will question what jay powell told us monday >> good morning, seema a lot of attention on the jobs report it wouldn't surprise us if it came in light because the covid variant spiked in august we are getting indications that folks are patient about when they want to go back to the market to get jobs we think that is because kids are still out of school in a lot of the country that will change after labor day where some of the last public

school systems do go back after labor day. it would not surprise us if it came in light. there will be more uncertainty about the report than others investors need to keep in mind what is important for the long term and where they should be focused. we positioned clients to be exposed to stocks that do well as a tapering begins and where interest rates do eventually come up. you want the insurance in the portfolio. you can find that in financials with insurance companies and banks. also to make sure to stay exposed to the sort of companies to give them upside as the economic recovery continues. while it might be a little bumpy here as the earnings report will reveal, i think ultimately all of the shortages we hear about resolve slowly over time that provides an ongoing tailwind >> the way you have the jobs

report and the report from the fed is go long on the financials you like the banks talk about the emerging markets which you have some allocations. this idea that if the fed does move, that would be bad news for emerging markets that hold a lot of dollar debt >> that's a really good observation, seema we are not opposed to emerging markets as a broad concept more looking for the companies that happen to be in emerging markets to see new economic drivers going forward. for example, we own clients a gaming platform involved in digital payments located in southeast asia and singapore and s then taiwan and brokering in brazil those countries are battling covid more than we are they are transitioning to

digital payments and ecommerce looking at that company in emerging markets can reveal opportunities. we think international exposure is the good way to diversify portfolios and gain growth emerging markets multiples are lower than the u.s. for the reason that there is more risk there. the reopening in the u.s. gets a boost after labor day and the reopening in international markets is going to take longer. that provides a later tailwind to ortfolios. >> what does it mean for the u.s. outlook s&p 500 trading at 4,500 where does it land at the end of the year >> a lot of people forget at the record highs that the market generally makes record highs the reason is economies are growing. population is growing. technology is advancing. sales and profits go up over time it is a bumpy path
