insights into the consumer tha we are getting today credit card firms say th consumer is resilient, but som signs of casting doubt o whether that will last for long plus, we will find out soo whether the holiday spending will stick or if retailers are seeing higher than norma returns. and a lot of eyes are on another key era of consume spending, and that would b restaurants. we have full coverage on these stories. we're gonna start with kat rooney on those credit car earning results. kate >> a, so the theme of credit card earning so far, it's al been about computer -- consumer spending. it's the quarterly numbers for amex and visa. american express though is the winner so far at least if yo look at the stock reaction the company's positive outlook is the main driver forecaste better than expected profits this year, and it boosted it dividend as well i caught up with an exodus cfo who told me that the highe income consumer that they ar serving is looking strong. restaurant spending top 10 billion dollars for the firs time, spending was up 11 compared to about 6% across th

board. airline spending though di slow a bit he did say they are gainin traction among younger people, gen z in particular, and the apple pays growth said it is a win-win for a max. it has been negative for companies like paypal. amex did see record revenue, although that in earnings were light of expectations. and then you have a visa so by most accounts, these ahead early strong quarter the estimates, you saw prett strong quarter volume. the reason for the stock dro was the slowdown that we hav seen in u.s. spending, at leas in january the company at least partially blamed severe weathe conditions keeping peopl inside and spending less in th last few weeks also forecasted, a disappointing second quarter revenue. growth has been up doubl digits, but it does appear t have plateaued a bit in recent quarters management once again callin the consumer resilient that is déjà vu. we've heard it from visa befor citing holiday shopping an travel guys, back to you. >> all right, kid rooney, than you very much. joining us for now in the rest of the hour to talk about this in a lot more, steve grasso, ceo of grasso global

steve, welcome, glad every with us >> good to be here so much fun to be in a different studio >> you have the window sea here we reserved for you. let's talk about the credi card companies, i guess the bi three are amex, visa mastercard, but there ar others >> so if you're looking at jus to pick up where you left of in that segment, america express has the highest, the most affluent clientele. if you worry about recession where you can go to the mid insulated so that is the 50,000 on tha main if you look at visa, the revenues weren't that bad. up 9%, so it was their guidanc or the way that they felt abou the transactions i don't know what to make of that i don't know if it is a weathe issue, but we are willing to give it to them because th consumer has not cracked yet [inaudible still have a job. what he doing have a job you still spend. and so i think all of these, and if you look at the chart and all of them, the technical are all impact the technicals on american express actually look the best that is the most momentum.

visa, a little bit winning, an mastercard is somewhere in the middle >> do you know what is getting under my skin? and almost causing me to put m credit card back in my pocke is the fact that more and more merchants are trying to recoup the charge that they have to pay to the credit card companies. so they're charging you 3% i you use your credit card, or 2%, or whatever it is. >> but now we are getting window into how these paymen providers make money, right? like if you are a consumer, al of a sudden you're like oh right, it cost money to use my visa >> true. but think about, what is the alternative? now >> it is to pay cash, suppose. >> so you better get a big rubber band. that's what i have holding m credit cards and my cash in my pocket i am carrying, to your point more cash than i've ever carried before because wha they normally do now the first one to go is american express because it ha the highest transactional fee, and then it is the visa an mastercard's, but there are lot of companies that don'

accept any credit cards thes days i feel like i'm back in the 19 80s! >> there are also a lot of companies that don't accep cash at all. they are cashless, and tha creates its own set of problems let's move on. >> let's move on we will talk more. >> let's go with a consume check and time of the year tha retailers are closing th window for holiday returns it is a sign of relief not onl for the money, but a growing fraud. courtney reagan has that story for us >> reporter: hi contessa, it's not the increasing cost of returns the concerns retailers the most, even the cost of processing an online retur average at least 21% of in orders value according to -- >> fraud's number one, and it' not even close to number two number two is really the cos of doing something with thos returns, because that is a ver new labor intensive thing. >> retailers expect 16 and a half percent of holiday return to be fraudulent this year that is 24 and a half billio dollars worth, up from the

annual average of 13.7% of returns that are fraudulent. this is according to - retail and the national retail federation now the ceo mark - told me at the show that fraudulent merchandise not received complaints have doubled over the last severa years for his retailer i particular no other fraud tactics include shipping back a different item than was just received, that i actually number one. like a box of bricks instead o a tv, returning stolen gifts and we're using counterfei receipts so here is an example from - retail one person living within $224,000 from a fraudulent returns, they returned 100 fraudulent items, 215 stores across all of these states using a variety of some of the tactics that i mentioned above now refer fraud has caused a number of retailers to tighten their return policies writ large. some though are using a.i. t personalize their return policies that includes retailers like amazon so my return policy for th

got it covered for us. kate >> hey there tyler first up, value as mentioned -- andrew charles says he expects a pick up in value pricing restaurants, but not necessarily a spike. btgs peter soler says it i already upon us, and that also could continue, as the restaurant continues to grow traffic this year. remember, grocery prices are running at a slower rate tha restaurant food prices are, an so endless say the restaurants may do some targeted value offering on their digita platforms as news like mcdonald's set ambitious goals to grow. another area focus of course i wages in minimum wage hikes. 42 states raise their wages to start the year, and industry watchers are looking to april, when california here will have the highest wage in the countr for fast food workers at $20 a hour earlier in january, pizza hu franchisees in the state began driver layoffs in advance of that so you can expect higher price for fast food operators ar going to make up for that labo inflation or a move into another theme, which is a.i. and automation del taco is one example that -

bowl, and why has this union among many others become rathe agitated recently? >> i think what you're seein in las vegas is almost a perfect storm. you have unity among the unions, you have 100 different union operating there, you have labor market which is tightl marketed in the sense that these places need thes individuals. there was an exodus of hospitality workers during the pandemic, and now you have a major event coming similar t the formula 1, in a way, and there is no way that the power structure in the city wants legal strike at this time. keep in mind also, these are the unions that gave joe biden nevada by 2% they were out there and ther are strong connections there unions and las vegas have long history, and i suspec they will come to an agreement i don't know the details, but

suspect they will come to an agreement rather than have labor strikes during the super bowl >> well, because there i competition for labor in las vegas, and you know, the housekeepers - let me ask you about thi sticking point that i was told about. is it typical to have wages at a smaller company be on pa with wages at a much bigge company? and i don't know if this is good comparison, but can spirit, the spirit airlines play its flight attendants the same a united does a local news station that belongs to the union pay its reporters the same as th reporters in new york city >> well i would hesitate to sa anything in las vegas is typical, but i would say tha there is always comparability, and it depends upon -- the union has politica problems of its own if they ar representing the same group an one group is being paid very differently than another

and so there is no questio that there are strong pressure mitigating towards paying very conquerable wages, no question and i think that what we wil see is something very summer ball among those lines >> it's a sticking point in th negotiations with wind mgm and caesars about automation, an we're talking so much abou a.i. replacing human beings. i'm curious to hear what you think of this. that union told me that we aren't trying to sto elimination from taking ou jobs, we know that's going t happen, and especially you see the robot vacuums coming through, or the robo bartenders instead, what we do is w manage specific language and protections so that one, we ar elated that's coming we are not looking at vendor for robot vacuums and we are going to be replacin housekeepers for it. to, here is some money to go start retraining these workers who will be replaced

three, severance if there is n job waiting. is that something that you anticipate will be more in use across the nation in acros industries it looks like we are frozen. we have one of those moments where zoom is not zooming. >> the problem with teams -- >> but what do you think not i'm saying we're talking all the time about whether a.i. is taking over, but already if you are a clerk and a cashier, you see new jobs replaced by customers being able to go in and do their own thing. >> you know, he's back, okay can we get his answer there, dan, did you get a question? >> sorry i did hear the question. the notion of automation and union jobs is in an old one in the labor movement, an ultimately, they work this out this is the trouble with tol takers, this is true o railroads.

ultimately, there is going t be some kind of an arrangement where jobs are safeguarded i the future, there may be fewer jobs it would be very enlightened o the management to look towards retraining that would be a very good wa to go in my opinion. there needs to be a partnershi between labor. >> is there a resurgence and unionization in the united states these days? when you think about side afte an strike, the radio on strike and earlier this wee fascinating to me they cal state university system went o strike, shut down classes for day, and that was settled. and agitation for unions at th likes of starbucks when they have some and even amazon. our unions coming back >> well certainly there is a interest in unions that we hav not seen in decades, and there have been some high-profil successes. if you take a look at th actual data, fewer employees are represented by unions toda then in the heyday of the 1950
