top of the news at this hour, gay marriages will be legal in new york in less than a month. governor andrew cuomo signed the nation's newest same-sex marriage law just last night. that was after the new york legislator approved it. it will go into effect july 24, making it the sixth and most populous state letting gay coupleles to marry. protesters on one side, police in syria on the other. at least ten people died in fighting across the country yesterday. the government blamed armed gangs for keeping the violent uprising alive. >> in minot, north dakota, floodwaters still rising swamping more homes, sending more people to higher ground. we should see the river crest in about nine hours or so. about a fifth of the city already under water. now people in the nearby small town of sawyer are being told to

health problems. new york's new same-sex marriage law. just as the city's gay pride weekend was getting underway. david, it sounds like the gay community will have plenty to celebrate this weekend. >> that's right, fred, it is sort of ironic, the passage of this bill occurred on the same weekend as the pride weekend, it will meander down sixth avenue. it will meander past the stone wall in, what sparked really the beginning of the gay rights movement. new york now obviously being the most populous state is joining the list of five other states, including the district of columbia. what that means, put this in a little bit of perspective, what that means is that the number of

americans who are living in same-sex states will effectively double. now we spoke with a number of individuals who are both for and against it, those who supported the bill and said this was sort of a long time coming, an historic moment in which same-sex partners and couples will achieve equal rights in terms of hospital visitation rights, medical benefits. those who are against it say it could impose unintended consequences against religious organizations. the passage, people say how has this happened? many attempts to pass this senate bill have failed in the past. what the city told us was that it was a dedicated responsor and the ability of swing vote senators who voted against the measure in 2009, this time they cast their vote in favor.

what people are able to do, if anything at this point. >> reporter: yeah, hey, fred. not much they can do at this point, the city has just become inundated with water the last 24 hours. people are trying to do what they can. there's people in helicopters, they're trying to drop sandbags on things that pop-up. they're pumping water out of the city hall complex. water that's backing up through the city storm drain system and they're continuing to work on dikes like this that they have to protect the more valuable infrastructure around town, the city hall, major bridges, things like that. about 12,000 people have been evacuated, they're still up here on the edge of the flood trying to get a glimpse of their house. but they know if they live on this side of the floodwater, their house has sustained heavy damage. you can't tell, but this is a railroad bridge and a road that

went under this tunnel, it's just been taking away by this flood. >> we're about nine hours away from when the river is expected to crest. what's the expectation when that happens there? >> we just recently got what could be a small bit of good news here, it's sounds line of scrimmage they have downgraded their estimates and it's only going to go up a few more inches. this area is already inundated, so i'm not sure a foot would make much of a difference. down two feet from their wor worst-case scenario a couple of days ago. >> people of minot have said that there really isn't a place for anyone to go, there aren't any hotel rooms, there isn't anymore space in shelters and if you have had to evacuate, you're staying with friends and family. paint a picture for us of exactly what has been living

been like for other residents there since the evacuations got underway? >> reporter: it's actually pretty interesting fredericka because minot, north dakota has been something of a boom town the last few years, there's a great oil industry here, so all these oil workers have been moving in and already before this happened, there was barely any rental stock of apartments or anything. and fema, when they provide assistance to people, the first thing they look for are hotel rooms, apartments, things like that long before they resort to the trailers like we saw during hurricane katrina. as far as shelter, they can get into a red cross shelter and sleep on cots, but where they're going to go long-term is a bit of a question. all right, two years ago

put anything on that supermarkets shelf. talk to your doctor before you start taking a vitamin supplement. if you're taking blood thinners, you may be taking vitamin k which can get you into a bleeding problem. >> is there a case of too much of a good thing, some vitamins say you can take up to six a day, that was on one label of a supplement and sometimes i guess people can get sick or claim that they don't feel well after taking vitamins? >> yeah, too many vitamins can take you toxic. you have to think of what are called the fat soluble vitamins, a, d, e and k. if you load up on a, d, e and k, you definitely can get sick. and you look at the ingredients

drivers are on average between 20 and 30, and both of you have defied the odds, joey, you first, how did you get out of the starting block so early and so good? >> i think for me, i started when i was really young. i think amount of kids, they're coming into the nascar series now are really starting when they're 6, 7 years old. that's when i started, and when i'm 15 years old, jerracing fou me and encouraged me to get into race cars at a really young age and my career went a lot quicker than i think it would have been if it went a different way. >> you start at the age of 12, which is considered kind of late when you look at the scale now. but for you, do you feel like starting out any sooner might not have been the right formula for you?

>> i think at the time it might not have been. but i think that i had such passion when i started out that may not have been there in the early years. >> do you think about these drivers, one of these days i'm going to be neck and neck with you? >> there's numerous drivers on different levels that i have always admired, jeff gordon was one that i alwaysed a mirrored grmirrored -- admired. and so any time i get to race with those guys, i'm pretty excited. >> so joey, what happens to you when you get ready to race, when you get in the cockpit, so to speak, behind the wheel. is there like a real transformation that takes place with you. >> there's two different joeys, there's joey, the racetrack joey, and then there's joey. when you're at the racetrack,

that's when you're working really hard on your race car, to make it better with your team. and i become really quiet. i think your mind is going a million miles an hour about certain situations that can happen and it's just a bunch of unknowns basically until the green flag is up. if you're trying to prepare yourself the best you possibly can for that race just in case something happens. because you never know what's going to happen. it's just like any other sport. something can happen in lap one and if you put in position last night for the race, what are you going to do? they always run through your mind, and that's going through the whole race, as you're going 200 miles, you're thinking about the next pit stop, what your car is going to do, trying to position yourself for the end of the race. that stuff's always going through your mind. >> can you ever be too confident? >> i don't think so, i think you need to be very confident.
