12:00 am
new york life. the company you keep. hello, again. live from cnn world headquarters, i am natalie allen. welcome to the continuing coverage of the attacks in norway. it's 9:00 in the morning there, and norway is waking up after the most tranlgic day in recent history. two deadly attacks. first a bombing in the capital, and then a massacre at a youth camp, and the shocking scale which is only just becoming
12:01 am
apparent. police now say at least 80 people were killed on the island. a gunman has kmasquerading as a policeman. a 32-year-old norwegian man has been arrested by the police, and they have named the subject anders behring breivik. the death toll from the bombing in oslo a few hours earlier stands at seven people, and scores more were injured and, of course, dozens dead on the island. jim boulden joins us from oslo.
12:02 am
you were monitoring the news conference a few minutes ago. >> reporter: yes, i thought it was interesting the prime minister said he had been going to the island every summer since 1974. he is of the labor party and this is the labor party's summer camp. he said the place he had been visiting every summer has now turned to hell in a few hours. he was fearing he would know some of the young people who had died. as far as more details, i don't think that we got a lot of more details from the justice minister or prime minister. they still won't name the suspect in custody. they said that was a matter for the police and not the politicians. they were saying it is important for the police to find the facts and all the information. they are not going to get drawn into any conclusions. and they still won't say that they think it's only one person. they want the police to talk
12:03 am
about that. i don't think they are hinting to us that there are more people under suspicious, and i don't think they want to say right now that it was only one person, because that's not something that they are comfortable saying. also, they talked about the recovery, and they said they have never seen anything like this, of course, in norway. they don't have, quote, the apparatus to deal with so many people being killed in one day. the most they have seen was from world war ii. they are asking for volunteers. they are telling every norwegian they could help at this moment. >> yeah, they said they want to concentrate on saving lives right now because so many people have been injured. did he say much, jim, about what the security issue is in oslo today? it's the weekend in oslo. i am sure people are still quite terrified. did he talk about the threat level or what the security
12:04 am
situation is? >> reporter: yeah, he sure did. he said some of the government officers may have been destroyed and the government is still functioning, and the government will meet later today. he said two reasons would be to help people, and also he said to discuss the threat level. >> thank you, jim. we're just learning the police are now holding a news conference, and let's listen. >> every one should now have a thought for and respect for all the victims and the sufferings and their families. the oslo police will have the responsibility to investigate both the bombing and the shooting.
12:05 am
the investigation is going to be very extensive and very long. and seeing the crime scenes, you can understand that investigating all of this and the analysis is going to be an extensive task. we ask for your understanding. it is difficult now to provide details for all of this. we need time to put this huge puzzle together. we are using all resources possible. we have support from other police districts in norway and the armed forces and all municipalities. also, we want to thank everybody who has helped us.
12:06 am
12:07 am
12:08 am
he will be sued both for the bombing and the killing, and this was a very special huge crimes. it's a special paragraph that is seldom used. it was seen as an act of terror, and it's possible for 21 years in prison, the maximum punishment for this sort of crime. in oslo city there is no longer a need for people to stay away.
12:09 am
however, please stay away from the areas we have sealed off so that we can work effectively investigating the crime and securing values, and make sure that oslo comes back to normal as soon as possible. we have investigate but not concluded regarding the perpetrator's place of living, two places. we have not finished those investigatio investigations.
12:10 am
that's what i have to say at this point. the chief of staff can say a bit more about the operating police procedures. what you see now is supposed to be creating safety. this is an extreme event, but part of our plans, or we have plans for this. the army is helping out to free police resources for the investigation. so although the armed forces are in the city, it's just as a preventive measure.
12:11 am
if we have information that people are in danger, we, of course, we have acted differently. now, we cannot exclude the possibility that there are more people involved. we ask the general public to follow all police guidelines. and this will continue for sometime because there is extensive work to be done. they opened up the outer limits, the outer borders of the city
12:12 am
center, but not in the core area. we understand that it's difficult to tell of the security measure, but we will stay there as a preventive measure, and we want to get the whole situation under full control. we're not yet there. however, please follow all guidelines. all the information to the victims and their families and relatio relations, people, please use
12:13 am
12:14 am
telephone line with things like that. we want to collect everything possible from this area. you have or the secret police had this perpetrator on the radar? >> we are in the early phase, and we will provide very limited information about this person from what we know at this point. we wanted to make sure we don't jump to conclusions. we're investigating this very broadly.
12:15 am
>> is it your main theory he has been operating alone? >> we cannot say that for certain, but as i say, we have every reason to believe that we are going to sue him for both incidents. >> reporter: the questioning of both the perpetrator and the witnesses will hopefully tighten the scope, but for now we cannot exclude the possibility that more people were involved. we are going to start the investigation and i cannot tell you more. >> reporter: do you have a number on the missing people? >> translator: no, we are
12:16 am
working together with the military district, and we're trying to find a number of people at the camp before the shooting and now people have been evacuated to different places, so it's difficult to get a tally. we're working hard to do that. i cannot say more about the suspects. >> reporter: the sad thing about this, can you say anything about his mental state? >> translator: no.
12:17 am
>> translator: we will question the witnesses and then start the investigati investigation. so far he has indicated that he will explain himself. we don't want to say anything more about the suspect and the investigation right now. >> reporter: [ speaking foreign language ] >> translator: we will not say anything about his background. understand that this is important for you to understand, please understand, we're so early in this investigation, and we need a little time to comment
12:18 am
on everything. sir re. >> reporter: can you say anything about the bomb? >> translator: bomb experts and technician experts are looking at that now. we cannot say anything more about that now. >> reporter: can you provide more details on that? >> translator: no, not yet. it's too early. no details can be brought at this point. it's difficult to say how much time it will take. the special crime scene investigation unit is looking into this.
12:19 am
12:20 am
about the investigation. >> reporter: do you normally have terrorists security measures? >> translator: we have no information on that. delta force was ready and able. we had an open mind where there could be a second event after the bombing, and they acted rapidly. >> reporter: they found him? >> translator: when they were searching the island.
12:21 am
>> reporter: voluntarily, did he surrender? >> translator: those details we cannot provide yet. no comment. >> reporter: but you can confirm it was the delta force that took him? >> translator: yes, that's correct. >> reporter: do you expect to further have arrests in the christian fundamentalist in the right wing? >> translator: as we said we will investigate this very broadly and then we will see. we will see if there are any other people we want to come in touch with. >> reporter: can you deny that you are planning further arrests? >> translator: no 37 -- no.
12:22 am
>> reporter: are you surprised the first major terror attack came from a norwegian christian fundamentalist and not an islamists? were you prepared for something like this? >> translator: we are thinking about scenarios. the perpetrator, that is secondary. >> reporter: you have followed this environment close enough?
12:23 am
he is a free mason, the suspect, and has a license? >> translator: the secret police are monitoring potentially dangerous groups continuously. we cannot provide further details or specifics on this guy. this guy has not been on the police radar since. had we seen him before, we, of course, would have taken action. but that's not possible in this case. >> reporter: so he is completely new to you? that's your conclusion?
12:24 am
>> translator: there's a lot of soldiers being transferred to oslo now. can you comment on that? >> translator: yes, they are cooperating with the armed forces, so they are working under our management to secure the buildings, streets, so that we can free police resources for normal police work in oslo. it's an ordinary arrangement, and it's just so the police can use its resources where they should be used. >> reporter: are these special soldiers are regular?
12:25 am
>> translator: it's from the royal garden. it's from the home defense units, research. >> translator: we are still trying to understand where to start the technical investigation, where the bomb went off. you have seen the crime scene or the bomb scene, there is huge damage. it will take a lot of time to get the true overview.
12:26 am
12:27 am
>> translator: the victims have been taken. >> translator: there is a machine gun? >> translator: he will not be specific on the type. it seems that most questions -- >> it seems the news conference by the police is ending. they could not say much about the investigation because it's so early for them in the investigation, but they did give
12:28 am
us new information. unfortunately, the death count has gone up on the island. 84 now dead on the island. no police officers were among the victims. they are searching for bodies in the water, around the island, but they don't know yet if there are people missing because they just have not a count as to how many people were on the island and who may be among the dead or missing still. we also learned that the suspect is just now being questioned. police won't name him, but local news there in norway have identified the man in custody as this man, anders behring breivik, 32 years old. we did learn from the police just now that he is starting to be questioned by them and acc d according to the police has indicated he will explain himself. now the reporters were asking questions about his alleged christian right wing extremists
12:29 am
views, and police had nothing to say about that about whether he has been on their radar, but they did say they are investigating two homes or apartments where he purportedly lived. as far as the bomb goes, you just heard, they still are trying to figure out where the bomb went off because the damage, as you can see here, is so extensive, they have not been able to pinpoint the genesis of the bomb. they did say, even though they want people to stay away from the vast crime scene, they did say the sooner oslo gets back to normal the better. but they did say the crime scene is so vast, talking about oslo and the island there, it will be an extremely difficult task to put the huge puzzle together. they are starting to talk with the suspect at this point. so that's where we are with the
12:30 am
story in norway as it unfolds. we will continue to follow it and continue to bring you the latest as we get it. we are learning a lot this morning. police, stay right there as cnn continues to cover this horrific story out of norway. 12:35 am
had all the success and you are so high profile and get criticized and praised in one measure. when you get criticized, what do you think is the most misconception about you? >> oh, piers, you get this i am sure. the criticism and praise is not worth the salt that goes on my bread. tv is fickle. one day you are getting an award and the next day a death threat. what does it all mean? it doesn't mean anything. what matters to me is that i try to do the right thing on air and off air, and what my children think of me and what they will read about me one day on the internet and what my husband and parents and family think, that's what matters to me. what keith thinks about me, and
12:36 am
that's what matters to me. >> well nancy, you've been incredibly honest in this interview, more than i thought you were going to be about that part of your life. and, you know, personally, i love watching the show. i think you're a force for good. and i think that you are ballsy and aggressive but at your heart, you want to bring justice to people like kay caylee anthony. >> thank you, friend. >> coming up next, my interview daniel baldwin, why he got a restraining order to keep his wife away from their two small children. [ male announcer ] things seem better with travelocity's best price guarantee.
12:38 am
12:40 am
daniel baldwin is no strange with struggles with addiction. daniel says his wife was in a drunken rage and threatened to kill him. he filed a restraining order to keep her away from him and their two small children. daniel baldwin joins me now. welcome back to the show. this is all very depressing, i would imagine for you and your family. how has it come to this?
12:41 am
>> well, you know, we're trying to recover ourselves emotionally and psychologically from some of the events that took place in the house that led to these papers being filed. but it wasn't, you know, a one off event. i mean you're right in assuming that there has been a steady build up in this. joann got a dui a year ago june and placed on probation and has had some problems with violations of probation previous to this. but let me just tell you something. we have skated on the charlie sheen issue and some other people before on your show. remember something. the sheens love charlie. and the lohans love lindsey. and the baldwin's loved daniel when he went through his problems as we love joann. so the filing of these papers were strictly and solely because i needed to protect my children. so, you know, that's why this occurred.
12:42 am
>> i mean the papers make dramatic, really. i have them in front of me here. there is an entry where she is highly intoxicated in our home. she gets upset over money and proceeds. to wake both children up by screaming and throwing objects around the house. she throws and hits me in the face with the phone. she threatened to kill me with a knife and warns me she will eventually kill me all in front of our children. and in the next page this is your handwriting, she came out of our bedroom and claim she watched a documentary on women who killed their husbands. she explained, now i know how to do it. i understand why they did it. you have been warned. move out of this house or i'm going to kill you. this was said in front of the two children. i mean pretty extraordinary stuff this, daniel. how did you feel when your wife said this to you? >> well, i think -- i think you need to remember, too, that she is from time to time a blackout drunk. when she had her du i, she
12:43 am
actually struck another car and hit a man at 40 miles an hour putting him in the hospital and she has in recollection of that incident. so i think she's capable because of what i think is alcoholism of doing things in a blackout she really doesn't have any memory of and any control of. but there lies where being a responsible parent comes in. i've never been on the opposite side of the continuum, piers. i was the one that blew a relationship previous to this. that was not a good and effective father due to my addiction. and i have to tell you the only good thing that has come out of this has been the fact that in the 12-step program, step nine is that you make amends to those that you have harmed except when to do so would do harm to them or others. i've had to go back to a number of people in my family, loved ones and say my god, i'm so sorry. i had no idea what you were feeling. i knew what i did. but i never had to feel it
12:44 am
before. now i'm on the opposite side and it's just an awful and helpless feeling to watch someone that you love disintegrate. >> why are you doing this interview? what do you hope to achieve by speaking publicly about this? >> well, i'll tell you a few things. number one, i have been inundated with people requesting interviews that are showing up in my driveway, that are parked in front of my house with news vans with the big satellite tish dishes. i said it's time to go to a place where i address this. i get it out there. i -- what were my goals and what it is -- a lot of people asked why did i file for divorce? the answer to that is she needs to understand that this is an ultimatum now. i can always reverse that or stop that should she decide to get help. i'm not going to die ni her eny her the opportunities i had myself. i need to draw that line in the sand. to answer your question directly why am i doing this? because this is a relationship
12:45 am
that i've had previous to this situation where i've spoken about addiction before. i felt very comfortable speaking with you. not to mention the fact that i watch your show a lot and i think you're very fair. so i wanted to go into a forum where i wasn't going to be beat up, i was going to be asked both sides of the questions which i think you do effectively. >> i mean i'm going to play devil's advocate having said that with you. honestly, you went through a well documented period of substance abuse. you were arrested four times that we can locate. you were clearly going through a pretty hellish time yourself n a way, you've been where joann is now. and you know how difficult this kind of situation is. what do you hope is the end game here, daniel? is part of your thinking on this as she cleans herself up you can get back together as a family? is this a short shock treatment you implemented here? >> i won't rule any of those things out right now. i'm going to stick to the letter of the law.
12:46 am
you know, there are certain things you may ask me that i have to defer to my attorney here in portland. but i think i can kind of answer this question and that is, no, right now i filed for divorce. i intend on getting divorced. i have a protection order for myself an my children because i cannot control what someone else does and i am quite fearful of the next time something like this erupts. it escalated into physical violence on her part. so i have to do what i have to do. my first responsibility has to be to my personal well-being and more over my children and their personal well-being. you'll never know, i hope, piers what it is like to have a 3 1/2-year-old child come into your bedroom and say is mommy going to kill us? because she heard her mother say that. now, of course, i don't believe that mommy is going to kill her, not while i'm there. but is it possible that when i'm
12:47 am
out working on something if i leave them in they are protection and under her custody that she could get intoxicated and do something or even do something irresponsible by leaving a door open or leaving -- absolutely. absolutely. that's very possible. and there lies the on going fear that occurs in my life. either she's going to drink too much and she's going to act upon some of these threats that she's made or is she going to do something incredibly irresponsible and the child will fall out of a window or something like that. i'm not going to wait around to find out the answer to that. i'm going to make sure that doesn't happen as their father. >> daniel, it's obviously very troubling time for you and your personal life. when we come back, i want to talk to you about more positive stuff about your extraordinarily talented family and what you're up to at the moment. the eagle flies at dawn. the monkey eats custard. price-line ne-go-ti-a-tor. so, you've been double crossed by other travel sites and now you want to try the real deal. yes, is it true that name your own price... ...got even easier? affirmative. we'll show you other people's winning hotel bids.

12:51 am
>> that looks like a giant grass hopper. >> are you kidding me? >> look out! that was nbc's "i'm a celebrity, get me out of here." daniel baldwin was in that series with his brother steven. daniel, i wouldn't say it was something i would rush to do again. i thought you were quite brave going into the jungle with him. >> any time that i have to be in a jungle or a situation that there might be danger, i want
12:52 am
other people around me if i'm with my brother steven. [ laughter ] >> wait a second, though. >> what an extraordinary family. no, go on. >> i was going to say, you did a reality show with steven. you got a little dose of steven. i saw you get a little frustrated a few times with him. >> oh, god, he drove me absolutely bonkers. i don't know how you deal with him, i have to say having said that he was a good fun and he was a trier. he never gave up. all you baldwins have been through the rough and tumble of life. but you are survivors, all of you, aren't you? tell me about the baldwin family ethos. what is it that you say that keeps you all going? >> i think that we have certain things that were instilled in us from my mother and my father as we grew up. we grew up in a town called massapequa, long island which was affect atly known as mozza pizza. we were like the kennedys with
12:53 am
no money. we were the overachieving black irish catholic family with all these kids that all did pretty well in athletics and grades and ran for student office and everything. and my dad was a high school teacher in our hometown that taught at the other high school. so our archrival, every thanksgiving day, was my father. he was a football coach at the school that we had to play for bragging rights for the whole town. so there is was a real sense of competition and one upsmanship that came in that house that is the survival skill in my family. there's definitely a fierce competitor's edge that lies in all six children, the girls, too. >> now, who are you closest to, would you say? >> i would say i'm closest to billy. i have a certain understanding with steven, which is almost more like kind of a fatherly
12:54 am
thing. when my dad got sick, steven was in sixth grade in grammar school. and i was a senior in high school. so i got the football coach at our school to allow steven to be like our manager. so steven would run from grammar school over to our school and spent three or four hours a day with me. my dad being out of the house and dying of cancer. so i have a unique bond with steven, but i think it's more of a father kind of thing than it is of a brother. it's more evened out to be brotherly now. but it was a unique relationship. alec and i were fierce competitors. where alec is just older than i am. so we beat each other up for everything there was, including food at the dinner table. and that relationship is still very similar. we still are very competitive with each other. it's a constant word game of one upping each other. but billy was my next youngest brother. and he and i have a bond because we both played a sport in high
12:55 am
school that unless you play that you'll never know the dynamic of the relationship. we were wrestlers. and when you're that tiny room, it's something that i can't explain. it's not like playing football together. it's not like playing a -- when you're a wrestler, those relationships you will maintain for the rest of your lives. it's a very close-knit, very small, tight sport. >> funny. i was quite keen to wrestle with steven actually in "celebrity apprentice." possibly to the death at one stage. >> yeah. i can see that. i graduated with steven and my wrestling relationship to now boxing is what i prefer to do with steven. >> [ laughter ] >> tell me, you mentioned the kennedys analogy, albeit without the money. interestingly alec has been flirting with politics. and i read his twitter feed. and in fact, engage with him quite often. he's very political on that. he raises lots of social issues. you can see a guy, i suspect,
12:56 am
mulling over the possibility of a political career. there is talk of him possibly running to be new york mayor. do you think he's serious about this kind of stuff? >> i think that you have been caught in the, like many other people, in this web. because i think it has always been a plan of his. there have been open discussions with people for many years now about what would be the most effective way to launch this. and i happen to have been prify to one of the -- as far as i know -- initial conversations some years ago about where to start. and i think that it would be a brilliant move for him in 2012 to run for mayor of new york. because in the city itself, he is very, very popular. as you start to branch outside of the city, if you went for governor or senator or any of the things that i think that he would aspire to be, i think that he would run into some stiff competition. and i think that he would also run into less allies than he would, shall we say, had he run for new york. and also keep in mind a
12:57 am
launching pad to bigger and better offices is surpassed by none when it comes to marry oralships as new york city. there are people that have been mayor of new york before that in recent conversations have been considered on tickets for president of the united states. meaning rudy giuliani. so yeah, i think he's definitely more than just thinking about it. i have a strange suspicion he's going to run in 2012. and i think he'll probably win. >> i mean, obviously if you're competitive with him as his immediate kid brother, you've got to start recognizing the appalling possibility that if he ran and became new york mayor, then potentially four or eight years later you might be hearing the words "this is your brother alec. you can now call me mr. president." >> well, know, what i've been really thinking about and i'm already looking into, how long will it take me to get my law degree if he goes there? because it's going to be at least two terms in gracie mansion. so could i pull off getting my law degree so i could be the attorney general when he goes to the white house. i'm thinking about myself here,
12:58 am
piers. >> it's all about you, isn't it? >> of course at the end of the day. >> well, there's something -- it would be something rather poetic about the no money kennedys reaching etch lons of high-power. you have the people's vote, i think. >> yeah. i think that there's a lot of people out there. you know, listen, ronald reagan -- alec and i had a laugh when he was made president because it was, well, should we act or should we go into politics? and here ronald rag an ago youably at best a high level b actor which would be the tenth largest economic world power in the world, he's governor of california for a long run and then becomes two-term president of the united states. this guy wasn't even a great actor. in my opinion, you know, the smartest guy in the world, either. i think nancy was the brains in the operation. and this guy becomes president. we laughed and looked at each other and went, you me we can actually do both?
12:59 am
we can actually become actors and then become tired of that. arnold, boom. if there wasn't a lawsuit you had to be u.s. born he could probably be the president of the united states right now which is pretty scary. >> i don't know. i think he would have been quite a good president. daniel baldwin, i wish you every good luck with your domestic issues. they found pretty awful to go through for your and your family, i wish you luck with that. and also luck with your family's aspiration to become the new ken dis. i'll be watching with interest. >> we'll see what happens. right now my biggest issue is continuing to get in good shape, piers. i'm working very, very hard on my body. >> you're looking pretty good next to me. you've lost a lot of weight. >> i did. i've lost 55 pounds on this incredible homeworkout system called the scog system, skogg. you can look it up at www.skoggsystem.com. it's the most amazing -- >> enough of the shameless plugs. >> thank you. >> and final
