before this man allegedly tried to kill president obama, he sent a tape to oprah winfrey. you'll hear what he had to say. also, you remember the story of the baseball player kidnapped in ve vein zela, he's safe and back with his team. let's start right now with the break being story out of libya. where saif gadhafi has been captured apparently trying to flee. he was caught mere the algerian libya poureder. he is wanted by the criminal court. what do know? >> reporter: t.j., we're joined by a guest who can give us more information on this significant capture. i am joined here by a national transitional council military liaison and if you could tell us

what happened? how was he captured? >> the full details is not clear at the moment. we released the information. he was caught near the border. he is currently en route to sdplin tan from what i last heard. the exact details are kept from us for the moment for his own safety and security. >> what state was he in? was he wounded or not? >> he may have sustained some injuries during the capture. his condition is unclear. >> our understanding is there were clashes. so there was resistance to the capture, correct? >> maybe. the details still coming in. but we do know that he has been injured. how extent of his injuries are is unclear at the moment. esque treated. he will be taken care of. his well-being is vital to us.

>> reporter: there have been a lot of concerns about human rights allegations and abuses taking place by revolutionary fighters. are you saying at this time this is a guarantee thing, that he will be treated as a detainee? >> there are no guarantees but that is the objective. we've given orders this that they should take good care of him and mo harm should come to him. en route, the procedure from one location to another isn't very long. that's why there's a lot of secrecy behind it. they're scared we could be inspected by other forces who may have personal grudges or things like that. so far so good. >> reporter: what is next? what is going to happen to him? he's wanted by the international criminal court and supposed to stand trial in the hague. what will happen? >> we'll wait for a final verdict on that. but the people in general do want him to be tried here. he holds a lot of vital information that will be benefit the country and the people.

we expect him to be held and kept here. >> reporter: thank you very much. appreciate it. the national transitional council's military liaison joining us here in tripoli. thank you so much for the update there. saif gadhafi, the son of moammar gadhafi has been captured. we'll have more on who he is, significant can of his capture. we'll be joined by our senior international correspondent, matthew chance, at the top of the hour. let me turn to presidential politics or politics in washington, d.c. the elusive deficit reduction deal. the deadline is officially wednesday, but is it already too late. joe jons live for us on capitol hill. we got at least until wednesday, but in reality we don't have that long. >> no. you're right. the deadline is wednesday. that's when they're supposed to adopt this big budget deal that's been talked about since august. it probably isn't going to

happen. but we'll get to that in a minute. the important thing what you're talking about t.j., is the real sort of practical deadline is monday because by law, number one, they have to release any plan that they're planning to adopt 48 hours before they actually vote on it. the other half of it is, there's something called the congressional budget office. these are the guys who have to estimate how much any plan that affects federal money is going to cost, what it's going to do, what they say it's going to do, and it takes time for them to do that work too. they're going to be able to speed up a little bit. but the bottom line is, this super committee if it comes up with the deal, is really going to have to have it done over this weekend or at least by the end of business monday to have any chance of sort of finishing business before thanksgiving, t.j. >> what time? do we know what time? where they're supposed to be getting together today? >> there's tons of meetings that are supposed to be going on and remember, i mean, the united

states congress pretty much is out of here for thanksgiving. but we have the 12 members of the super committee, powerful members of congress who are sticking around in hopes of having meetings or whatever to get some kind of a budget deal over the next several days. but no, this is a moving target. it's been a moving target for a long time. it's very difficult to do. a lot of pessimism that will happen and no other timetables than monday and then wednesday being the biggest dead liline o all. >> thank you for being with us. we'll check in again. we're about six minutes past the hour. president obama is heading home after wrapping up a week long trip to asia. focused on job creation and cooperation. the president wrapped things up in indonesia a couple of hours ago after meeting with the prime minister. after that, he met with the premiere. that meeting added last minute. president obama expected back in washington early tomorrow

morning. a big day for the republican presidential candidates today. most of them are in iowa. they're attending a conference being put on by a leading family values group. mitt romney will not be there. he's campaigning in new hampshire instead. herman cain, he now has secret service protection. a source inside the government tells cnn that the cain campaign asked for protection after the candidate got unspecified threats. this is how cain responded to questions about adding the secret service protection. >> the thing about secret service is that things are secret. so we don't discuss any details about it because that would not be appropriate. >> later, in the day, cain admitted that there were things they encountered in new hampshire that made the campaign "a little uncomfortable." on tuesday night, republicans will gather steps from the white house where a debate on the national security and economy

co-sponsored by the heritage foup dags and the american enterprise institute. the cnn debate begins 8:00 eastern that is tuesday. turn back to penn state and listen to this news now about former penn state coach joe paterno. he's now been diagnosed with cancer. hln's mike ga lan owes live for us in university park. another development in a story that has different developments every day. nobody necessarily saw had one coming. what's the reaction there? >> stunned. stunned. this is already a town and a campus that's weary, t.j., after what has gone onment then imagine that. what we're finding out, joe paterno received the diagnosis last weekend. imagine what was going on had his household. he's not coaching as a head coach for the first time since 1966 and he finds out he has a treatable form of lung cancer. we do have a statement from his son scott. let me read it. last weekend my father was

diagnosed a treatable form of lung cancer during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness. he's undergoing treatment and doctors are optimistic that he will make a full recovery. this is a deeply personal matter for my parents and we simply ask that his privacy be respected as he proceeds with treatment. they're saying it's a treatable form of lung cancer. obviously, we all wish the best for joe paterno. remember, they're still playing football. it's got to weigh heavy on the minds of penn state. their football players, the program what's going on with joe paterno and the ncaa launched an investigation. sent penn state a three-page letter. among the highlights, it talks about the coach having to monitor his assistant coaches and administrators in and around the program. that hits at joe paterno. there's another highlight to me and it talks about you have to do more than avoid improper or questionable conduct. you have to rise up. at the end it talks about young people being lifted up and not made victims.

again, four questions at the end of the letter. the penn state has to answer. basically dealing with how did you handle this and what are you putting in place to make sure it doesn't happen again. a statement from penn state, they are with the ncaa and are going to cooperate because obviously, they do not want anything like this happening again as well. >> mike, one other thing, quickly. news about the second mile charity that sandusky founded. what do we know about it? >> well, there was some talk yesterday maybe the organization is folding. that is on the table. the second mile, the charity founded in 1977 by sandusky. it's helped a lot of kids, t.j. three options. they may scale down and operate at a reduced level. working with donors and supporters. number two, they may disband and farm out their operations to other charities or number three, and that means they will fold and they're done. i had a chance to see some kids at a second mile event a couple of nights ago. just these kids, it was a nice activity, working with some of the penn state students. a lot of kids have been helped.

100,000 per year. so we'll see what happens with that. michael galanos. thank you. joe paterno's son is speaking out about the son. he's still an assistant coach at penn state. he was talking with espn about how their lives have been turned upside down the past couple of weeks. says his father want to keep the focus on the victims. >> pretty surreal. like the book of job. i'm not a bible scholar by any stretch of the imagination. but job went from having everything to nothing. it's not quite like that. to keep things in perspective, one of the things that joe said to me throughout this said we have to keep focus on the victims of this whole tragedy. >> paterno family says the family -- paterno says they learned yesterday that he had the treatable form of lung cancer, that we alluded to. still a lot happening at penn state. one other thing the school has to deal with is trying to get

the reputation back. we'll be talking to someone here who will be my guest about how penn state can go about trying to rescue its reputation. also, we'll turn to syracuse and university basketball coach there. says the allegations that he molested two boys is patently false. bernie fine is now on administrative leave, a former ball boy who is now 39 years old says fine molested him hundreds of times over 20 years. he says he told syracuse police about it six years ago. the university actually investigated the 2005 claim. but found no evidence to back it up. fine says he's confident that his reputation will be restored. meanwhile, a former syracuse quarterback talked about the allegations and the investigation with our erin burnett. >> you take these kinds of accusations very, very serious ily. which the university has do. putting him on leave. the troublesome part of this, it comes on the heels of a very explosive case at penn state

that involved a grand jury investigation. in this case, we don't have that proof. we have a story that did -- what was revealed several years ago, investigated and found to be nothing and now we have this second kind of claim that -- >> a relative of the first person. >> exactly. relative of the first person. where this concerns me most is that it clouds the issue of child sexual abuse as something that happens in these big time sports environments and not something that happens on an everyday basis. i think stories like this tend to cloud the issue. bernie fine has been an assistant coach at the syracuse school with the basketball team for the past 35 years. we're at 13 minutes past the hour. i want to you turn up the volume a bit on your television and pay close attention to what we're about to roll for you. this is a doll, a doll that's on store shelves right now. it's a popular toy but the controversy is about what the doll, a talking doll actually says. i want you to listen to it and you come to your own conclusion. let's listen together.

quarter past the hour on this saturday morning. give you a look at stories making news cross-country. we dpbegin with a chain reactio crash in oceanside, california. >> take a look at this scene. an suv embedded in a vacant building. police say it rear ended two other cars triggering the accident. the suv jumped a curb, hit a man before careening into the building. the pedestrian was airlift today a local hospital. he was seriously injured. the suv's driver, taken to the camp pendleton naval hospital and two marines, passengers in one of the vehicles, wound up with minor injuries. in georgetown, south carolina, a sinkhole swallowed up a foundation of this building in a shopping mall causing it to partially collapse. you can see what's left of the roof and walls. no injuries, but cleanup work will be happening all weekend. firefighters started to inspect other buildings after spotting

we're at 20 minutes past the hour. about to check in with reynolds wolf in a second. he'll be talking about the massive wildfire going in western nevada and weather has been playing a role in this thing. as many as 10,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes. also know that at least 25 homes sustained some kind of damage from the fire. reno fire officials said they may have prevented 4,000 homes from being burned in this winfield wildfire. the areas had wind gusts as high 85 miles an hour. reynolds, you were saying this. you weren't -- hurricane strength winds whipping up a fire. >> absolutely. basically like a blast furnace so to speak. the winds will drop back, humidity is going to be back. the firefighters should have a little bit of help from mother nature. yesterday, a nightmare scenario,

areas scorched around reno. we're seeing the storm system that helped provide wind and that's up and out of the part of the nevada. what we're going to see behind it a little bit of a respite. maybe moisture from the pacific. it's going to take a while to get there. it's not going to be in an instant. firefighters will have their work cut out for them. that storm system is not nailed to the ground. it's going to lift into the northern plains. as it does so, it goes from a wind maker, also wind, but also a snow maker. the twin cities, back into the northern plains, anywhere from 3 to 7 for the northern plains. for the twin cities, i'm thinking anywhere there one to three inches of snowfall. you'll have delays in minneapolis, st. paul. possibly in chicago before is said and done. you get the cold air from the north. the wrap around moisture giving you the snowfall. the wind is going to be an issue for you.

the 21st century and be able to get the job they really want. not just parents and care-givers we want for our kids. >> let's turn to this app. we think of the generation being tech savvy. they have the devices and the computers, all this stuff. but that's not what we're talking about. we're talking about getting young people into programming and explain that. >> this first app is made by carnegie mel lon university researchers. it's called alice. alice.org. essentially, it teaches young kids from middle school and high school is a nice interface where they can click and dragon the screen, they can create characters on the screen. just by using the mouse, they see the programming language associated with the movements. thereby they start to understand quickly how the program and what the coding would need in order to make the events happen.

>> okay. >> it's courseware for teachers and it's all free and you can download it at home or use it in the classroom. >> that's cool. it's one thing to just do it, but you can see what's going on behind the scenes that made that happen. another one here, kids will be into this, creating animated stories and sharing them on the web. >> this one is made by scratch. it's made by m.i.t. researchers. scratch.mit.edu. the same but different. you can create interactive stories. you can create characters and animation and give a storyline to that. a whole plot to that and then share so other kids can remix your work. you see a lot of collaboration, a lot of mathematical concepts being done. it's a really good way to get kids excited about something they want to do. but then learn the mathematical computations behind the scenes. >> another thing here, m.i.t., offering free on-line courses? >> this is big, man. for you, me or even down to the kids, m.i.t. has something called open courseware. they have a really smart section

case. natalie wood was one of the most popular, sought after actresses in hollywood which made her death in 1981 at just 43 years old all the more shocking and for some inex plik believe. officials were vague friday about what led to the reopening of the investigation after 30 years. >> recently, we have received information which we felt was substantial enough to make us take another look at this case. >> it was thanksgiving weekend 1981 when wood and her actor husband robert wagner went sailing on their yacht the splen do you remember. they were joined by christopher walken. they got into a heated argument. a short time later, wagner notified the fourth person on the yacht, captain dennis davern. that wood was not on board. he told cnn she might have tried to take the yacht's dingy to shore. >> i said to robert wagner, i

said well let's turn on the searchlight to see if we can see her. and he said no, we don't want to do that right now. >> natalie wood was discovered hours later dressed in a nightgown and socks floating a mile from the yacht. the autopsy revealed dozens of bruises on her body. still the coroner quashed rumors that she was killed or committed suicide, insisting the splendor in the grass star died of accidental drowning. was alcohol to blame? an autopsy showed wood had an alcohol blood level of .14. even more perplexing, wood once told an interviewer her greatest fear was dark sea water. and her sister lana, later claimed natalie didn't even know how to swim. 30 years later, the question remains. how did natalie wood end up floating in the pacific? as for the captain of that yacht, investigators say they want to talk to him and hear what he has to say d.j., this time around.

saw last night. all eyes were on this oklahoma state game. number two team in the country. football team. but they're playing right after the tragedy of the head women's basketball coach and another coach in a plane crash. >> thursday the plane went down just outside of little rock, arkansas. and last night the team took the football field with heavy hearts. they played in ames, iowa. they came in ranked second in the country unbeaten and playing against unranked iowa state. they upset them in double over time. 37-3. now this is a who is going to play in the national championship game. it really shakes things up. you really only have one undefeated team in it. they remain undefeated. that's lsu. you have all the one loss teams eyeing the prize. it's a beauty contest to see who will get in the championship game. i know arkansas is on the list. you've got oklahoma. you have several, oklahoma

gutter. no word from the white house or the secret service. breaking story we're following this morning out of libya. it appears that saif gadhafi, the son of moammar gadhafi has been captured after weeks on the run. here's a photo we have gotten. this is being disfribted in libya. this is from the france iransit council. you see what appears to be saif gadhafi there. resembles the son of gadhafi. we haven't verified the authenticity of the photo. he was caught by the revolutionary fighters after a firefight in a libyan desert. according to the council, he was slightly wounded. necessity go have a warrant out for his arrest from the international criminal court for war crimes. we'll get more on this. what does the cap if you remember mean? our matthew chance is our senior

international correspondent joining me now from lon godon. after all that's happened and the council getting a government in place, how relevant is the capture of saif gadhafi? >> i think if it's true this time, because of course his capture has been in angst at least once in the past in october at the height of the rebellion which proved to be not true. then i think it's obviously a good thing in terms of the ability of the kun fwun frcount move on. there's an indictment for him for war crimes at the hague. we understand from the hague authorities are now in touch with the justice authorities in libya to try and get him handed over so he request be tried there. the big question is what will happen to saif al islam gadhafi. will he be handed over and face a trial or will he meet the same

fate as his father did in october, t.j.? >> do you any they're taking extra care, the transitional council and the military there to handle saif, if this is true, to handle him differently. there was criticism after moammar gadhafi gad at thwas fo >> we'll see how that develops. tempers, emotions run high when someone like this is captured. we saw that with the celebratory gunfire in the streets of tripoli, elsewhere as well. obviously the authorities will be keen to show that the new libya is not the kind kwun fri where people are executed at well. that puts the fugitives and criminals on frietrial. given what happened with his

father in october, there will be ex fra efforts and attention given as to how al islam is stre treated. there's a strong support and opinion that wants that members of the gadhafi clan shall the tribe to be tried by libyan courts. so that's a debate that will be had once this initial celebration of saif gadhafi being taken into custody are over. we'll turn back to news in this country out of washington, d.c. the elusive deficit reduction deal. the dped line is wednesday. let me bring in joe johns for us on capitol hill. >> the bottom line is they need, in the interest of transparency to get the information out there 48 hours before there's nia profl on the super committee for what would be at least a $1.2

trillion budget cutting deal. which has been frankly, very elusive. there's a fre amount of pessimism on capitol hill to reach an agreement they can live with and keep this process in play. what's sinteresting, if you tal to members of the super committee, what you hear is a lot of optimism that they're expressing at least in front of the cameras. we have couple sound bites and we'll falk about th falk about them on the other. >> the division is on taxes and whether or not the wealthiest americans should share in the sacrifice that all of us have to make. that's the decision. it's what we're waiting for. i remain hopeful. >> i remain hopeful that we can meet our goal. i urge my colleagues to join us

students across the country are thinking about what college they're going to go to. as they fill out applications, how many had penn state on their list? but now penn state is no longer on the list? maybe that's one example of how penn state has work to do on its reputation. let me bring in somebody here to help me with that. branding expert. ceo and president of brand me international. is that real? do you think there's some kids sitting around and more so the parents saying wait a minute, cross penn state off your list? >> absolutely. let's be honest here, we're dealing with a tragedy of epic proportions. right now, the school's never seen an incident like this in a collegiate athletics hike this. for the children, this is a difficult time. my heart and prayer goes out to them. >> where do they even start? they have a new president. where do you start to get people to think differently about penn state? >> it's going to take time first of all. i also think it's really

important. they'll have to -- it's about the worth. penn state has been noted to be worth over $4.6 billion. right now they have to rally the troops, get the right minds at the table and do what i call cpr. which is create community, create clans and be resilient to keep going forward. >> what do they need to revitalize, work in the athletic department, specifically the football team, that image or has this tainted the whole school and it's not just about the nittany lion that mascot? >> it's bigger than football. penn state's mantra is we are penn state. now it's an identity crisis. who is penn state? what are their values? how do they bring in loyalty and compassion right now? they have to talk about the broader side of the school, which is not just football, it's education. one of the top schools is a business school, which is all around their supply chain

management. it's one of the top programs. let's have conversations about how we'll heal and how this program, this is bigger than the university. >> how do you do that? you're talking about that cpr. what would you tell them? who do you target? do you make sure you're out front? how do you go about making people think differently about penn state? >> first of all it's the communication. they've got to be honest and very empathetic about the situation what's happened about the scandal itself. then this he have to step back and say what is the new message going to be? those are our biggest fans. our students, our faculty, our staff and the alumni. they have to get back in with them and say how do you tell your story. what has your experience at penn state been? how do we talk about this as an opportunity to recover and be resilient? >> sounds like they have a long long way to go. good to have you here, melissa. we'll see you again plenty i'm sure. also coming up, we'll share your comments on a story you all have been talking about this morning

hallway at the high school. a senior says what a coach said to him next crossed the line. >> he was doing -- he stopped and he was like, hey, take the picture and when you take the picture at the bottom label it future welfare recipient. and i was just like, i'm kind of hurt. they were just laughing. i'm like trying to play it off, laughing with them. >> marcus says for the past two years, this is the kind of awful remarks that he got from his basketball coach, derrick howard. but this time he decided to pull out his smartphone and asked the coach to repeat. >> future welfare recipient. >> who? >> who? >> students that don't get their grades. this is a coach, this is a teacher, this is somebody who i trusted to teach my son. my son is carrying a baggage two years with the harassment with the bullying by somebody who is bigger than him, who had more authority than him.

>> the student said things were so bad, he didn't try out for basketball this year because coach howard often allegedly spoke to african-american players in a belittling way. >> you're at your high school, five years from now, you won't make $30,000. you won't be able to do this, you won't be successful. >> marcus junior asked the coach to stop the remarks and he didn't and he went to the principal with the recording and the coach was brought in and said he was sorry. >> i think he apologized to take the heat off of him, you know. that i don't think he really mean what he say. >> so he and his father went to the school today to file this racial harassment report against coach howard. they want him removed from teaching and coaching. >> i speak for every black african-american in that school. you got to deal with the parents. we see you now. it's over. >> i got a lot of response from you this morning. you the viewers been writing in to me. here's what some of you said. one of them saying teachers or coaches are supposed to be role
