workers burning off the beaks of chicks without painkillers. it shows one swinging around a bird with a rope. the undercover footage comes from its facility in colorado. it produces the eggs for mcdonald's. 27-year-old nathan runkle is the executive director for mercy for animals, a company he founded when he was 15 years old. they're dedicated to preventing cruelty to farm animals. >> to know that this abuse was taking place for mcdonald's and egg mcmuffins and appalls pea. we're hoping the company steps up to the plate and makes meaningful policy changes. >> after they were exposed mcdonald's vowed to stop buying eggs from this company. they say based upon recent

information, we're no longer accepting eggs from sparboe. this is not a food safety issue for our menu items. we can assure our customers that eggs in our entire supply chain meet mcdonald's high standards for quality and safety. >> the president of the company put a message on website. it's fired four people and ordered an independent audit of its animal welfare activists. they go on to say this, i was deeply saddened to see the story because this isn't who sparboe farms is. acts depicked in the footage are totally unacceptable and completely at odds with our values as egg farmers. in fact, they're in direct violation of our animal care cold of conduct which all of our employees read, sign, and follow each day. tonight libyans are celebrating like they haven't since the death of moammar gadhafi. the capture of his son set off the parties.

permeated throughout the community. i don't people feel like they have enough based on what they know, based on what they've seen transpire in the last few weeks at penn state, so it was definitely, and these allegations, kind of like that elephant in the room that nobody really wants to talk about. after the game it was -- the coach who's been coaching here at syracuse university for more than 35 years, jim is to syracuse what joe paterno is to penn state and it's interesting because he had made some comments to the local paper in syracuse saying i'm not joe paterno. we asked him about that and he basically said that it was his kind of way of defending his assistant coach, a man he's known for 50 years and he says knowing someone for that long he deserves to be able to show some loyalty to his assistant coach. the coach did not sit by him on

the bench tonight at the game here, don. he was asked about that repea d repeatedly and about the coach. he deflected all questions, refused to talk about the investigation, however it was handled six years ago when these allegations first surfaced, but the object comments he did make was to say that he will continue focusing on basketball. he says that his basketball program will be fwieine, they'l keep moving ahead. we have a little bit of interview sound after the game where he was asked about that comment, don. i asked him specifically, i said, look, you've made these comments, i'm not joe paterno. what did you mean by that? let's listen to what he said. >> when joe paterno said i didn't do enough, i could have done more, that was the reference setting up if i had heard something or something happens today, you know, i'm going to do something about it.

six of the top republican presidential hopefuls are in iowa tonight. it may not seem like it but time is running out for them to really make a difference. the iowa caucuses are coming up on january 23rd. live pictures. rick perry speaking live. herman cain. let's go to shannon travis. shannon, why is this event important and how did it go? >> reporter: it went very well. as you just mentioned time is running out, don. only 25 days left before the iowa caucuses, and so it was

really important for these six candidates to come here and make essentially one of their last-ditch appeals to these conservative voters. of course, these conservative voters will come out to the caucuses, rain, snow, whatever, they helped hoist mike huckabee in 2007. this is an important voting block which is why you saw all six of them here. also tonight, don, occupy deparalympian testers. they were out in front of the venue before candidates started to show up, and in a very kind of bizarre moment, frank lutz, who was the moderator for this discussion, he knew that out of 3,000 people, that potentially some of them might be occupy des moines protesters. he thought he'd make a deal. anyone planning on disrupting this, i will give you a few moments to speak if in turn you allow us to speak uninterrupted for two hours. one man got up. he didn't say he was with the

there, whether in iran for example, the continuing wars of iraq and afghanistan. all sorts of problems that the u.s. faces. and some will argue the economy, the global economy is a national security issue. admiral mudden chairman of the joint chiefs of staff says what happens if the european economy goes down. after canada it's the largest trading partner u.s. has. there's no shortage of issues we're going to go through and we'll see where the candidates agree, disagree, where they agree with president obama, where they disagree with president obama for example. so it will be a good strong smart debate. i think, hopefully undecided voters out there will have a better appreciation of where the candidates stand. >> we have seen some have great performances and some not so good. who has the most to lose, the

most to gain. >> mitt romney has dub well in the debates, newt gingrich has done well. herman cain, not so much. the sexual harassment allegations, the long pause on a relatively simple question on libya that he had the other day in milwaukee. so he's had some problems. so, you know, he's going to have to come out strong, herman cain. rick perry, michele bachmann. rick santorum has done well. he's not generating the kinds of numbers that he needs to become a top tier candidate. we'll see how well newt gingrich -- we ask him how he prepares for these debates and he says i've been preparing for 50 baits. he's obviously very knowledgeable in a lot of these issues and we'll see how well he does. but mitt romney has potentially a lot do if he makes some mistakes. he hasn't dub that so far.

they defeated ohio state a short time ago. susan candiotti standing by on the penn state campus. susan, jerry sandusky has mostly stayed out of sight since he was accused of sexual abusing boys but he was spotted somewhere. >> reporter: he was. he was coming out a driveway, rolled down the window, handed a note to a reporter saying i had nothing to say, if you have questions, contact my lawyer. we tried to contact his laufrmt he did not respond. we wanted to know what he thinks about the charity he founded and news that they might have to close its doors because donations are drying up. >> so the ncaa says it is

opening up a case. how many investigations does that make? three or four? >> reporter: you know, don, by our count, four investigations, plus one involving the second mile charity as well as another one in texas over another possible victim there. >> let's talk about ex-head coach joe paterno. his family announced he has a treatable form of lung cancer, susan. what's been the response there in and around the campus? >> reporter: well, it's yet another blow to this town that's all reeling -- already reeling from the sex abuse allegations. certainly everyone here saying they feel very badly for him, wishing him with well, while at the same time saying he did make a mistake by not reporting those sex abuse allegations sooner. >> susan can't yaty on the campus of penn state tonight for us. thank you so much. we appreciate your reporting. what exactly happened the night actress natalie wood drowned 30 years ago? after all this time detectives

are reopening their investigation. but as kareem winters is reporting, they're not casting any further suspicion on woods' husband fellow actor robert wagner. careen? >> reporter: don, the los angeles county sheriff's department says he is not a suspect. but still this has not stopped investigators from taking a second look at this mysterious case. natalie wood was one of the most popular sought-after actresses in hollywood. it made her death at 43 years old all the more shocking and for some inexplicable. sheriff's officials were vague friday about what lead to tre opening of the investigation after 30 years. >> recently we have received information which we felt was substantial, enough to make us take a look at this case.

>> reporter: it was thanksgiving when woods and her husband went on theriot the splendor. they were joined by their friend walken. that saturday night wagner and walken got into a heated argument. later they notified the fourth person on board dav ron that wood was not on the back court. he thought she might take the dinghy to shore. >> i said let's turn on the search light to see if we can see her. >> he said, no, we don't want to do that now. >> reporter: she was found dressed in a night gown and socks. there were dozens of bruises on her body. coroners say she died of accidental drowning. was alcohol to blame? it showed wood had an alcohol

black friday less than a week away. it means big deals for the shoppers but what does it mean for the economy? terry, welcome back to the show. if next friday is a big day for retailers, what does that tell us about the rest of the holiday season and the economy as a

whole? >> so this is very interesting because more people say they're planning to shop, according to the national retail federation. 33% of the people they surveyed said they were going to shop this holiday weekend compared to 27% last year. but here's the great irony about that. the sales might not be up. they may be up half after much as they were last year because of all the good deals. prices are down, retailers are offering incredible deals, and so the numbers might not be so high. >> well, 74 million americans planning to shop, up 27% from last year. it seems pretty good. but you said the sales may not be so high. let's hope -- >> the total number of sales because the dollar volume of sales might not gain that much because of all the great deals. there's another paradox here. i'm going to tell you as your personal financial adviser. please be careful, don't go crazy with your credit card. if everyone listens to me that's good for each individual family.

>> i know, terry. everybody gets caught up in the hoopla. you know my favorite store, it's no -- well, it will also be named that and that's marshal fields on state street. i wear the numbers off my credit card. >> there is no more marshall fields. it's macy's now. they've destroyed all the great retailers. it's macy's. wherever you go, be careful. not your job to save the economy. watch the numbers. thanksgiving is the start of the holiday season. 60% of retailers get stung in the next four or five weeks. >> okay. any other signs? any new signs, terry, that the economy is recovering? >> oh, don, there's lots of signs be u they're overwhelmed by the bad signs. low inflation. claims of unemployment have dropped below and stayed there.

there's a lot of good stuff going on. manufacturing index sup. if you look, there's a lot of good little economic reports. not booming but good reports, but all of that is overshadowed by what's going on. i think this week besides shopping there's going to be two big economic focuses. one is on europe. everybody's getting a new government tonight or tomorrow morning in spain. they're electing a new government. will europe get its act together, deal with its debt or will they have problems and hurt us? that's the one big thing and of course the big thing is the super committee. can they find 1.2 trillion dollars of cuts? they ought to be. it's a huge budget. but this is going to be a huge thing coming up. it will determine whether our economy has confidence and we'll move forward and find a way out of our debt problems. you know, it's a holiday season. a lot of turkey, a lot of people shopping early. anybody -- fair warning.

joom they're called the super commit stee. six from each party were given the job of coming up with a $1.2 trillion debt reduction plan. they're said to be working through the weekend. after all the deadline is wednesday if it really is a hard deadline and even that is not what it appears -- first appears. cnn joe johns has tonight from capitol hill. >> there was a call. they told us he wants to keep working on this until the clock runs out. so there appears to be a willingness to continue to talk, but apparently not a lot of moment momentum. just days from a joint committee deadline to get a deal on large-scale deficit reduction,

you might think the capitol is full of hope they're actually going to do something. >> i remain hopeful. >> i remain hopeful we can meet our goal and i urge our democratic colleagues to join us in the effort. >> nobody wants to quit until deadline. >> many don't expect them to get too far on reducing the deficit $1.2 trillion over the next ten years like they're supposed to. one of the questions now is instead of real savings they're going to come up with some gimmick -- well, listen to steve ellis on a nonpartisan watchdog group. >> it's totally fictitious. it's damaging. we could come out of the super committee and if they don't do this right, we could come out in a worse deaf sigs situation than we were in the first place. >> guys who know all the budget tricks say gimmick number one would be to claim the cutting spending that was never going to

be spent anyway. >> the best example of that is we activities in afghanistan are already winding down and the government's not likely to spend as much over the next ten years as they have over the previous ten years. >> stan collender has worked for both the house and senate budget committees. >> if they say we're going to cut spending in afghanistan for the next decade, it would look like we were cutting a trillion dollars when we would be cutting nothing. >> another is kicking the can down the road. >> the committees go out there, come back with x amount of savings, a couple hundred billion dollars worth of saferings or whatever it is, and we're going to require that on a date certain. >> so the more you look at it, the trickier it gets. if the super committee does not come up with a deal, automatic spending cuts are supposed to go into effect. but there's a catch.

on mickey and the band for people magazine. i was outside on the beach doing photographs and i came in the house and i smelled -- about 4:00 in the afternoon and i smelled somebody cooking bacon it was 4:00 in the afternoon. keith never got up until 6:00 p.m. here he is. he was like i don't know. i got up. the cook is gone and i decided to make bacon and eggs. at the end of the day i said to him, guys, what would you think about photographing you in my bathroom? they all looked at me like sure,

why not. i had keith sitting on the toilet, charlie in the shower and i asked charlie if i could turn on the shower and give him an um brel rah. he said don't push your luck. we started researching for the book maybe two or three years ago. tom and christina came across this photograph and said ken this was taken in the bathroom. i said yeah. he said okay. i go out of town for a couple of weeks on the story. i come back and there is a 16 by 20 of this picture hanging in the bathroom. and everybody says i'm in the same bathroom as tha the rolling stones were in. >> it is a fascinating conversation. tonight owe will see much
