8:01 am
today, there are just eight shopping days let me tell for christmas. do you actually know what not to buy? it was less than three weeks ago since the iowa caucus, the state's largest newspaper is getting ready to endorse its republican pick for the white house. the des moines register will make that announcement today. romney picked up a key endorsement in another early voting stays. we're talking about south carolina. >> it is with great pride, great respect, great support that michael and i are very proud to say that we are endorsing governor mitt romney for president of the united states. >> now, that's south carolina. that's nikki haley. how big of a deal is this south carolina endorsement?
8:02 am
>> it's going to be a pretty big deal. these candidates rack up pride after prize. in iowa, you've got a lot of people still undecided and so this could the sway them towards a particular candidate, tip them over the -- tip the scales for one candidate or another. but the other thing interesting about the des moines register, which we are exp in the past, it hasn't necessarily meant a win for the person who wins the endorsement. we know in 2008,they endorsed andclinton. mccain iowa caucuses and hillary clinton came in third. it doesn't necessarily translate to a win. >> a lot of undecideds. but from the polls that we see and the people that have seemingly made up their minds already, we have a pol poll we can put up. gingerich has been in the lead
8:03 am
in a lot of places, but still, kind of tight there. romney, paul coming in second there at 17%. but i know there are a lot of polls floating around iowa and all over the country. but is there an indication things are tight.ing? >> the main thing we're seeing from these polls is that no one has a solid lead. that arg poll, gingerich is ahead in that poll. but we've seen other polls where mitt romney was ahead or stronger. we've seen other polls where gingerich is maybe slipping a little bit. so this is still a very volatile race. they will be out this christmas week essentially campaigning. some of the candidates will be here in iowa. you've got santorum, bachmann, texas governor rick perry.
8:04 am
in south carolina, you've got mitt romney. in virginia, newt gingerich and his wife will be sign something books, one of her new children's books. and in new hampshire, you have john puntsman. so only a few weeks away, a lot of activity. it's important for these candidates to get out there and stump. >> shannon travis, thank you, as always. you can join fredericka witfield here every sunday for an entire hour dedicated to the presidential contenders in the 2012 race. out of capitol hill, just finished up some work for the end of the year. a big vote just took place moments ago. kate baldwin is on capitol hill for us. this is the vote that could save people money at the beginning of the year, at least keep them from seeing a tax increase at the beginning of the year. >> chat is absolutely right. the senate passed an extension

of the payroll tax cut, but only a two-month extension. we'll get a little bit more to that in a second, t.j. i do want to bring you the latest on the massive spending bill to keep the government funded through the end of september as well as a government shutdown and the senate passed that. the vote was 67- 2. the house approved that same measure yesterday, so the senate has passed it. now it will head to the president. a short time ago, we received updated guidance from the white house. we will be expecting the president to touch on both of the measures. >> why two months on the payroll tax cut? we'll have to have this argument all over again in two months. >> i can tell yew so excited about that. >> yeah. >> this two-month extension comes because, honestly, congressional leaders, they could not reach agreement on the more comprehensive deal that
8:06 am
they had been working towards. they were looking for an extension of a year extending the payroll tax cuts for a year as well as extending unemployment for a year. they could not bridge the divide, bridge the gap that remained on how to pay for the package, how to cover the costs of these tax cuts and the other measures that would be part of the deal. they simply said they would run out of time and senator eid said yesterday, it was the best that we could get right now. so they are kind of kicking the can down the road, punting this past the holiday season. they'll be able to have a fresh battle over this and believe me, they will be battling over this. i believe it will begin in march. >> all right. i'll see new two months. always a pleasure. can't wait. >> awesome. >> thanks, kate. thank you. i want to turn to a major weather story, not here in this country, but in the philippines. they got hit hard by a major storm. listen to this.
