okay. time to get mysterious. jacqui jeras is here. >> don, i miss you. >> i miss you, too. i'm so tired i'm punch drunk. saturday night mysteries. what do you have this week? >> it's presidents day weekend, don't you know? we had to pick a mystery that has to do with one of the presidents, at least maybe the first lady. this has to do with our 16th president's wife, mary todd ling kun, and it has to do with a portrait that's been hanging in the presidential library museum in springfield, illinois for years and years. turns out this portrait you're looking at is a fraud. that's what it should be looking like. that's the original, believe it or not. this portrait was purchased in 1929 by the lincoln family and donated to the museum. the curator wanted to have it restored. in the process they learned tats portrait has been modified. she was wearing a cross

necklace, but in the next picture she's wearing a broach of abraham lincoln. it was penned by mr. francis carpenter. they don't know if it was actually done by him, either. her facial features and hair has been modified. they don't know who the artist was, but they decided believe it or not it's the most famous painting in the museum. they're going to keep it around. >> that is a saturday night mystery. >> indeed. >> this is interesting. it has to do with the milky way galaxy. there's so many mysteries surrounding the galaxy. some new images have created one more mystery unfortunately, more questions than answers. the european space agency took these images, never seen before patches the cold gas. that's what you're looking at there, these are basically

islands of carbon monoxide. they can help astronomers learn how stars form and things like planets. they might map out the regions. this next image you look at here, this has to do with microwave radiation. do you see that spot in the middle there? that's microwave fog, and it's unusually energetic, and they don't know why it's there. >> you see it right in the middle? >> do you see the yellowish and kind of the whitish colors? it gives off the brighter light basically, so they don't know. there are a couple of different things that could be causing it. if one is correct it could be a huge deal, right? have you heard of dark matter. most of our galaxy is made up on the dark matter. they say that spot could be evidence of the annihilation of dark matter. we don't have any proof that dark matter exists. that picture potentially could do it. >> you know, i haven't eaten all day, and now you have me wanting a milky way. >> that actually sounds pretty tasty right now.

can i show you this? >> did you get one in the break? >> there's no milky way in the machine, so i get this. >> the peanuts have protein. so that's better, right? >> it satisfies. >> i know you're going to be eating it while i read this next story. >> number three, bring it on. >> number three, stonehenge. we were talking about this before the break, and the big mystery, of course surrounding this. everybody has wondered how the heck did they do this 5,000 years ago and get those stones and lift them up on top? what did they use this strange formation for, and largely it's believed it had to do with spiritual worship and burials. this researcher now, steven waller, says these stones were created to give the special sound phenomenon.

apparently ancient people had this myth about echoes being spirits in rocks. he says this formation was used to create this kind of illusion that people would take like two pipers would play music surrounding the rocks, and it would create this interference kind of pattern. the sound waves would clash with each other and give off louder and softer noises depending on your location. i mean, it's something we've experienced, kind of an echoey sort of thing. he said that they would basically have these piper shows, and it would give this unusual type of magic aal sound illusion that nobody had heard before. >> that's still really cool, though. >> it is cool. >> apparently the scientific community is iffy on believing that or not. go ahead and be the judge for yourself. >> ooer other peoppeople on twi laughing because i want a milky way. you want to know my guilty pressure, the thing i do bh i'm tired and go home. i have a snickers bar -- there's

the arch bishop of baltimore. the new cardinals play a role in deciding on the new pope. also named was the first native-american saint, a 17th century mohawk woman who suffered from smallpox. tens of thousands of russians took part in rallies today to smt presidential candidate future tin. the election is scheduled for march 4th. they say they're paying people to attend the rallies. they say putin should win back the position. the world watched today as whitney houston's family and friends said their good-byes to her. the funeral was held for the superstar at her hometown church in newark, new jersey. so many famous faces were on hand it to pay their last respects. tyler perry, kevin costner, stevie wonder, alicia keys and so many more. after the funeral many of whitney houston's family and friends gathered at a newark restaurant sxchlt susan candiotti has more. >> reporter: as the rain came

down after that funeral, friends and family of whitney houston, including a number of celebrities, came to a private dinner, a repass after the funeral. they gathered together no doubt to swap stories and comfort each other after the experience they had just been through. a number of notables, we saw kevin costner who spoke so eloquently at the funeral. afterwards he came out and waved at spectators standing across the degree. we were kept at a great distance across a good six lanes of traffic. people who came here wanted to experience some peace of what happened earlier today. we also saw tyler perry and dionne warwick, angela bassett, jesse jackson and al sharpton that waved to the crowd across the street. undoubtedly for many an inspirational experience and also a very comforting one. don, back to you. >> thank you very much for that. whitney houston had the good for

anthem, and maybe a little bit to get your emotions up. i'm sure you were -- you watched everything closely, the services, what did you think? >> i felt the spirit of whitney in the room to comfort and to bring a deep love to everyone there. that was the magic i felt. i was very happy that i was there. i was very happy to see stevie here. i was happy to hear kevin costner's words. the choir that first began the whole thing was incredible. that got the whole thing just very whitney vibes. >> we saw it from a distance, even though the camera was in there. it was a pool camera where it's one camera angle and one news organization is controlling it, and then we all just take the feed. we don't see the faces and there's no can you telut-aways e one camera. take us inside and tell us how people were doing and everyone was reacting? >> everyone was very respectful.

they sat in their pews until they felt the spirit, because someone said the right thing. everyone had to stand to echo that sentiment. i felt people were being so respectful and very sharp to hear every word spoken and to hear every lyric sung. if something hit them, boom, they wanted to act right away. tlchs no lag time on anything, and that was the most beautiful thing. they were so respectful for whitney, for her day. this is whitney's day. >> i told bishop jakes when he would preach, when he did his thing, i found myself like sitting in church going amen. it had that sort of real down-home feeling to it. can we talk a little bit more about whitney and how you produced for her? how did you build those hits for her? what was it like to write and produce a track for whitney? did she have her voice in mind. did she say i'll go here with it

music and dancing to celebrate the carnival celebration. sasha darlington is in the middle of it all. sasha. >> reporter: the party has definitely gotten started here tonight, don. we're at the samba drum, and that's where ryo holds it's incredibly lavish parades. hundreds of dancers are lining up ready to go in, and in front of them one of their lavish floats often with barely dressed women on top sambaing the night away. there are another two nights after this, and these parades go until after the sun comes up.

honoring a woman who has given many children with cancer what her own daughter couldn't have, a place to learn and make friends. this week's cnn hero helps these kids reclaim their childhood by giving them their own preschool experience. >> morgan was a very happy child, had friends, and then one day when she was 2 years old morgan was diagnosed with leukem leukemia. we were devastated. to make it worse because of the chemotherapy she had no immune system. she could not be around other children. i was driving morgan to the hospital, and all of her friends were going to the preschool. i thought, we need to start a program for children with cancer where they can socialize and have friends and learn and play. >> my name is nancy zuck. i give children battling cancer a preschool experience. exposure to it a simple childhood cold or illness could
