we projected romney as the winner in all three of these contests. 27% of the vote in maryland is now in. romney significantly ahead with 47% to 31% for rick santorum. newt gingrich and ron paul trail in washington, d.c. santorum was not on the ballot and did not qualify. in wisconsin, mitt romney ahead right now with third. almost a third of the vote in and he has 43% to tlealt%. 6% for newt gingrich. let's bring in our own candy crowley covering the romney campaign. she is up in milwaukee and a lot of happy people. three wins. that's significant.

>> we republicans are unified and you might get argument, but there is a clear push here for a clean sweep opening up. you heard mitt romney saying i want to talk to pennsylvania and new york and all the rest of the states that are ready in a couple, three weeks. how romney views the future. santorum, gingrich, paul were not spoken. this is a campaign that wants to create that momentum and a psychological more than a mathematical thing right now. he is more than halfway towards getting the 1,144 delegates, but he is not near there yet. this is more about it's over, even if the math does not add up. they want to push ahead and

clearly what they must love to do is win in pennsylvania. they will make a big play there. they think the other states look friendlier. they think it's a knockout blow even though it doesn't mean they will actually get out of the race. they may dial it back as gingrich has done, but they don't necessarily believe they will get out, but they believe it will be apparent to republicans after this clean sweep tonight. this train has left the station. >> stand by. i want you to continue as part of the conversation. we have a panel with our political analyst and a democratic strategist and ari fleischer, the former press secretary for george w. bush. i suspect what candy is saying and a lot of others said to me, the romney campaign and the super pac will be spending over the next few weeks millions of

dollars in pennsylvania. >> they are. they would like nothing more than to defeat them and make that be the final death blow. what could occur is what could be a split decision. mitt romney would be able to win in the delegates. speaking of delegates, tonight mitt romney will make a big haul of delegates. rick santorum is less than a delegate. this is a huge victory for mitt romney and today, barack obama made it clear that the president said look, the person i'm running against is rick santorum and they may be able to try and define mitt romney and so i think the sam pain began today

whether rick santorum wants it or not. >> they are going to a general exlection campaign. he will spend a lot of money in pennsylvania. iowa and florida wants to crush santorum and end this. they don't have to deal with this. arkansas and kentucky could do well. what we have seen is they closed some of the gap in pennsylvania. he was behind in wisconsin and he closed that and won tonight. santorum lost the last time they ran in pennsylvania. the only reason they mattered that much. they can get santorum out of the race and if rick santorum wins, he will go on apparently. romney wants to end it so he can focus. what was interesting is we compare the obama speech earlier today and the romney speech, you have a portrait of the campaign

that was coming. romney is making a very, very different argument and saying i don't want to talk to you about a budget, but how you create jobs in the private sector. he is running not as a conservative, but a pro business. addressing women and the first few words out of his mouth, were they the huge stake in what's going on? do you believe as some romney supporters believe, if he spends a few million in pennsylvania to crush and try to beat santorum, that's a good investment? money spent in pennsylvania to support mitt romney could have an effect down the road in a general election in november against president obama. >> governor romney will close a lot of the deficit we see with independents possibly and he will pick up 5% to 10% and might pick up more with hispanics and

youth voters. i don't believe mitt romney will be able to close all of those gaps over the next two weeks by going after santorum as a big spending liberal with ties giving ex-felons to both. they ran in the d.c. suburbs and he is not inspiring. he inspires the base to prove he is the real conservative in the race. he has to inspire people in the middle. what i heard today or tonight, that was not inspiring. >> he had a tough ad that he started running in wisconsin going after mitt romney and comparing him to the president of the united states. he is a tough add. what they put out hurt santorum with folks like you. >> i used to be an insider and now i'm a new yorker.

>> it does hurt because republicans want to win and we all acknowledged and mitt romney is the plan b. he was excited, but he is acceptable second choice and he's ground down everybody else and become a first choice. to the degree that rick santorum hurt his chance to beat newt gingrich, it will turn republicansa, way even more. >> i would advise them in pennsylvania and wisconsin is part of this as well, a swing state, he wants to spend not to crush santorum, but to build his own favorables and live them down. that's what he needs to do in a blue and purple swing state like wisconsin. >> do we have a sense of romney's whereabouts and strategy over the next few days and weeks leading up to pennsylvania? >> he's going to raise money, but pennsylvania will be the first of many states in between.

that's the big state here. one of the things that they are counting on now is they do believe they can rightfully claim the momentum. we saw through the first part and mitt romney wins new hampshire and loses south carolina. newt gingrich immediately loses florida. mitt romney wins florida and loses in that sweep that rick santorum had. what they believe now is that truly is momentum and in the old fashioned sense that meant the states coming afterwards, the gaps began to close. they believe that you have begun to see that in the polls and that will happen in pennsylvania as well. i think the big question out there for rick santorum is if it begins to look at though he might lose his state, is that what he wants on the race? they are hoping to have a squeeze here, but they are fully prepared to spend a lot of money and candidate time in pennsylvania as well as

candidate time raising money. >> i'm sure mitt romney will manage to get a lot more pennsylvania establishment republicans on his campaign and spending a ton more money and rick santorum has more money and the super pac does as well as his campaign. the panel is staying with us. there is a lot to talk about. romney certainly has widened his already substantial lead in the all important delegate count. we crossed the halfway mark to the finish line. the cochairman of the national campaign and he stands by to join us, just ahead. it will be a psychological and emotional process and parts of the discussion here politically, but mitt romney will be the nominee. that will bea i great nominee and a great president. that's the big distinction. >> he said it's halftime in the process right now. he said if he can win pennsylvania, may is going to be potentially a good month and texas, kentucky and arkansas and states where he can do well. this will continue well into may. >> i think the race for all-purposes is over. i understand rick wanting to cling to it a while longer. i hope he doesn't. i hope he sees the need to unify the party. it's not our place and you look at this clear eyed and you can clearly see that mitt romney is

on the trajectory to be the nominee. >> even with tonight's three big wins, we are seeing the same numbers and a third of the republican voters told us in the exit polls that they wouldn't be satisfied with romney as the republican nominee and one in five republican voters in a recent poll said they either would vote for president obama or stay home if romney is the nominee. any reason for concern when these numbers come up? >> if you have a hard fought battle, there will be differences in the near term, but into the summer and fall, they will unite as it always does and should. by the way, look at hit romney's record. cutting tacks and spending and decreasing unemployment and standing for traditional marriage and that's a conservative record by any definition. is it perfect? no. look at the records. they are the perfect

conservatives? that's ridiculous. i know the records and i researched them. they are good at conservative, but that's the perfect conservative? give me a break. it's not. >> there is healing that will be necessary after this rather rough primary season, but doesn't time spent focusing on the base keep governor romney from reaching out to the independents. a lot of women voters and they will desperately need if they win the white house in the fall. >> as you saw today, the messages focus on president obama and less so on the republican nomination. we don't want to take anything for granted and we have to earn every vote, but newt gingrich and mitt romney's chances relative to barack obama, a great service by realizing the nomination will go to mitt romney and they can do their part to unite the party rather than dragging this out.

obviously they won't be the nominees. anybody who is looking at this clear eyed sees that and i wish they would do what they can now or soon to throw in behind mitt and get the party united. we need to focus on barack obama. that's the btdive, to get him out of office to get this country pointed in a better direction. >> i remember four years ago, you were first runner up in the vice presidential sweepstakes and you lost to sarah palin when they picked sarah palin. is this something you would like to see happen if romney asked you to be on his ticket? >> i took my name off the list and you noted that he will have a lot of great people to kick from and consider the best way to help him is be a volunteer. i have taken my name off. >> why did you do that? >> he will have a lot of great people to pick from and the best way to help him is in other

mitt romney's victories will put him past the halfway mark to clinching the republican nomination. there may be a good reason why he did well in maryland, wisconsin and washington, d.c. in a word, intensity. intensity? you have an intense foot? >> an intense vote in some places. look at the delegates. it's a big thing. this is where he was and now look at that. past the 600 mark. that makes a big difference. look at the national map and talk about that intensity briefly. we fly here and you see a lot of counties out here that santorum won and you see some that romney won. we will see some and look at the colors on this and now i'm going to switch it to the intensity of the win and look at that. romney's real strength is right down here in the great big counties down here.

milwaukee county. you will be in waukesha county and down to racine and kenosha county down below. big population centers and these are the areas in the suburban areas where president obama did so well. the challenge for mitt romney even after a big win will be to reach out to all the places where he won, but not in a big way and say come on, join the fold. he wants to take this victory into the general election. wolf? >> thank you. rick santorum is talking tough about staying in the race. some key democrats are not talking about him much at all and they may speak volumes. david axelrod and joe biden have been aiming attacks directly at mitt romney. >> i can't remember a presidential candidate in the

recent past who seems not to understand by what he said. the ordinary middle class people are thinking about and concerned about. >> he seems to be oblivious to the experiences of everyday people. >> look. governor romney's business practices and his policies have benefitted the wealthy and most powerful among us. >> the guy who wants to go back to the disaster. >> romney is a little out of touch. >> they face mitt romney in november and a lot of them to harsh it out. donna brazil and ari fleischer. as far as the white house and the obama biden campaign and it's obama versus romney. >> totally obama versus romney.

what was so interesting it me was that mitt romney's speech after wisconsin, he started talking about president obama as being out of touch. he said he was surrounded by true believers and it's easy when you travel around on air force one. you heard joe biden say and david axelrod that mitt romney is the one that is out of touch. we teed up one part of the argument that who is the person who is more out of touch with real americans and with the middle class? i think that's the beginning of another argument. >> it's fair to say the president for the next several months will try to take the high road and leave the attack dog to biden. >> he wants that presidential aura about him. that resonates with a lot of

people. >> the sledge hammer and you suck it in today. you will also use the humor. that fits better. he relishes a fight. >> what did you think. he is eager for this battle because you know and demonizes that the president is now ready to defend and he is ready to double down on the budget. the president is ready to talk about issues facing the middle class. this will be a battle. president obama will be able to put together the winning election. >> if we think that the republicans have been doing over the last several months has been brutal and intense, relatively speaking it was chiefly's play compared to what we are about to see in the battle between the president and mitt romney. >> president obama has a history

and a much better talker than a leader or somebody who wants to get something done. that's when he began this campaign with a bus tour of 2011. when the campaign started and the government ended. he announced he won't do anything because it needs space. to take different positions after what we call election day and he calls the flexibility day. he can't wit to get out of it. >> let me get out of there. he started campaigning on the bus tour last august and i went out in an interview with the bus tour and is that when he stopped governing. >> in september he put out a deficit that the republicans reject and of course president obama like mitt romney and others cared to seek the party nomination. he had to start his campaign, but beyond the technicality,

president obama has a record of achievement and accomplishment. he wants to talk to the american people about job creation and the middle class about preserving programs at a time the republicans want to cut to the bone. this will be an epic struggle and a close election at the end of the day. president obama will win. >> the deficit is sign of achievement. this president will be a one-term president. >> he needs to make this a choice and not a referendum. if it's a choice, he said who is the person who is out of touch? is it barack obama or is it mitt romney? >> this was surprising to me. >> from the point of view of governing, both parties have a battle of government. we have huge issues coming down and they all shovelled after the election. >> the house and the senate has. they haven't passed a budget in three years. they put their stamp on what they think. >> that's a good thing.

>> what is surprising to me -- >> this was surprising to me. you were touching on this 1 and questioning the campaign energy for the campaign and the president said this today in a speech before the newspaper publishers and editors said they are not thinking of contingency plans if the united states supreme court were to strike down the health care reform law in june. they are not thinking about that and not preparing for that possibility. that sounds a bit irresponsibility. >> it sounds unreal to me. >> they just assume they will uphold the law. >> they don't want to get out and the president did seem to challenge the supreme court. they don't want to get out too much. they have a contingency plan and the supreme court might decide

against it. >> our senior legal analyst said he thinks it's going down. they better have plans. >> the responsible thing to do is to think about what you would be talking about not only politically because that's easy, but by the way the republicans also have to come up with some kind of a plan. they have been talking about repeal and replace. they need to tell the american people what they would replace it with. >> the health care and the issue that comes in politically. you have experience. they leave the industry in chaos and terribly unfair and they are working hard. >> i suspect there contingencies under way and they don't want to talk about it. >> they are implementing the reform. >> for they said the mandates are unconstitutional, they have to go back to the beginning to

intact bedroom minus the roof. others boggle the mind. a funnel cloud through a trucking depot and picking up trailers and cabs and tossing them hundreds of feet into the area. massive trailers are being swept up into the storm and a sea of sheet metal and spiralling all-around them. exploding and shored up. forcing the love field as well as dallas/ft. worth airport to shut down for a time scores of aircraft damage and hundreds of flights canceled. hard hit were the cities of arlington and lancaster. hundreds of houses damaged in lancaster and injuries. so far no reported fatalities. we are thankful a man in land tafter is all right. you can seek shelter and went up

at home. he should have taken cover, but we are glad he is already. we are glad that no one as far as we know died in the storm. i spoke about that earlier and the dallas mayor landing on the back of their house. the neighbors are alive and amazing story of a couple that just left the house going to work at the children's medical center there. five minutes later they are destroyed by the trailers. a couple of retired lates that lived there since the 60s were in the house and the whole back of the house is destroyed. they are okay. >> when you say there is no fatalities fortunately and no significant injuries, you are referring to the city of dallas. you are the mayor of dallas.

is that true all in the entire dallas ft. worth area? >> we are reaching out to the whole area and not hearing of any fatalities at this point. >> that's great to hear. people are walking away with their lives. >> speaking with me earlier, joining us from arlington, texas, you just got to arlington and what kind of damage are you seeing there? >> the survival we witnessed in the city and we want to get to a piece of video to set it up in arlington. the video was shot by a neighborhood that lives across the street from the lawrence family. her two sons were here as the video was taken. the family is having a hard time seeing through the trees what was coming their way.

as the video starts to progress, you can start seeing it now and the tornado what they came to learn was it was getting closer and you can see the wind starting to suck debris and other belongings out of their garage. it was the lawrence family inside the house that you see behind me. here's nicole who survived this situation. she was in the house with her two sons. i walked through the house a little while ago and i can't believe you are standing here next to me. >> it's only by god's grace that i'm here. >> we will give you a sense of what happened in the house, but there was one area of the house that has any ceiling left intact and the bath r5078 that they were in. >> my mother called me to let me know that the storm was pretty

bad. my son, collin, my 18-year-old came home from school and had a sandwich and we were watching the news and the hail started coming down. once the hail stopped, our electricity went out. i thought that's it, we need to get in the bathtub. not maybe five minutes after sitting in the bathtub and making phone calls, i called to let him know we were safe and find out where he was. it flew through like a frayed train. >> your sons said they put you in the bathtub and they got on top of you. >> they were over me, yes. >> every house has damage, but nothing like this.

one neighborhood said it hit your house and went back up. you were the only house hit? >> apparently so. i noticed trees that were down. >> our neighbors had roof damage, but our home was the only one damaged. >> i was asking your son, you looked up and there was nothing there. >> i had no idea what to expect. we had a vent and it's like the vent or whatever in the bathroom and it was gone. i could see the tree. i knew. when i came out i had no idea. >> you were in this side of the house? >> this is my oldest son anthony's room and right next to

it is collin's. >> people were running up to the house? >> may neighbors across the street works for at&t and his friend was in the military and he knew what to do. his voice was the first that i heard. he said is everybody okay? my boys had gotten out because they had shoes on and i didn't. he assisted me to get into my closet and got me shoes and carried me out. we smelled gas and my husband was within minutes. once he got here, we got in the car and went to north articling to my mom's house. >> i'm grateful that you are here to tell us the story. it has been an amazing day for nicole lawrence and her two sons. as you just heard, her son told me he is getting ready for his prom. he found his tuxedo hanging up in his closet intact. he can still go to the prom.

>> physically, they are already. you start from scratch and at least they have their lives and the family for that. thank you to you as well. i want to show new video we are getting. taking it along the road. the person who took this had the sense to pull over and you can see the funnel cloud crossing the highway and cutting along side. they are going off in the background and the camera is remarkably steady considering what's in front of the lens down the road. >> quite a bit we had that 150 and 155 homes and totally destroyed. we had a nursing home that was partially destroyed. you know what, wolf? three people were transported.

of those three people, two were okay and is in serious condition. we dodged a huge bullet today. you have seen the video and you understand what happened in arlington, texas. in dallas today. >> i covered a lot of stories like this over the years and there is always a search and rescue to make sure no one was stuck inside. is that continuing and you completed the search and rescue. >> we have done the primary search and we are in the process of doing the secondary search. we feel as though we have everybody out now. they won't give up until they have gone through all the searches. >> as far as arlington is concerned, the similar situation and other cities and communities in your area as far as you know, no fatalities. just injuries. >> as far as i know, that is correct. we dodged a bullet today.

>> when you saw the trailers and the tractor-trailers simply flying around as a result of the storm, the tornados as if they were toys. in all my years, i had never seen anything like that. i wonder if you have. >> i haven't seen anything that severe, but i wondered what was in that trailer or below that trailer that will get hurt. i always think of the people involved. whether i walked up here, nobody could survive. they did all over the city of arlington and dallas. >> were the warning sirens the alerts that went off? did the system work? >> the system worked great. the alarms went off and went on for an hour or two. we kept having storms go through the city. they worked great and gave people lots of warning. >> thanks for the good news that
