may day protests all around the world. occupy wall street trying to regroup and calling for a day without the 99%. no work, no shopping, no banking. hoping for a nationwide disruption. and rescue 411. a 4'11" firefighter just the right size to save a little baby who fell 20 feet down a drain pipe. we'll be talking to the hero. up first this morning, pure gold. it's how intelligence officials are describing over 100 internal al qaeda documents that detailed past attacks and future terror targets. here is something incredible. the information was embedded in a porn movie. it was uncovered by german authorities after they arrested an al qaeda operative last year and that operative was searched. and that's when police found his underwear and inside, a memory card. the microchip had a pornographic video on it.

when the authorities went further and dug deeper with be they found a treasure trove of information embedded in the film. nic robertson is live in london this morning. you had so many exclusive breaks because of this trove of information, talk to me first, if you will, about this frightening situation detailing how cruise ships could end up being targets. >> there were 141 secret al qaeda documents and some of those documents, according to u.s. and german counterterrorism officials, they believe, were written by very senior al qaeda members. one of those documents was al qaeda's future plans. and part of the future plans, according to a journalist who has also seen and had direct information about those documents, indicate that al qaeda want to start targeting cruise ships.ç >> it says that we could hijack a passenger ship on the sea. and then use it to pressure --

to pressurize the public. what he most likely means is that they would then start executing passengers. >> and that they would dress these passengers in orange jump suits, similar to the prisons in gitmo and upload those executions to the internet. that is just one type of attack al qaeda wants to move to. they want to move to mumbai, shoot 'em up style attacks like we saw in india, 2008, 164 people killed by ten gunmen. a twin track strategy to have big operations like 9/11 if they can but because they can't pull those off, have lots smaller, low-cost operations as well, actually. >> nic, these are the things they may want to do but we all know that many of the missions that this country has been involved in in the last decade has made things difficult for al qaeda, so do they have the capability anymore? >> even they are concerned about

that. in the range of 141 documents, there are documents who detail some of the past attacked, a plot that happened here in london. they provide a valuable insight. what al qaeda is saying in the future works document is they are concerned that morale is slipping because they are losing key operators to drone strikes. they recognize the counterterrorism officials are able to spy on them better, know better what they are doing. even, they say, some of their own operatives are not even plotting or planning to do anything because they're so concerned about being caught. but what we have seen is, laid out in these future plans documents, over the past couple of years, al qaeda continues to try to achieve those same goals. >> nic robertson, live in london. thank you for that. just a reminder to our viewers, over the next two hours we'll bring a lot more information to you.

baseball size hail. it was coming down pretty good, damaging stuff there. six reports of tornadoes out of this cluster of thunderstorms that is now making its way across parts of arkansas. and southwest missouri. with this also came not only that big hail but some big rainfall. some radar estimates of 10 plus inches across northern oklahoma and southern kansas, because of that, there are flash flood warnings and flash flood watches out right now because of swollen rivers, 2 to 4 inches of additional rainfall on top of what they've already seen. another batch of severe weather further to the north later on. large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornados from kansas city up toç omaha through minneapolis as well. here's your heat. temperatures in d.c. could get to 85 degrees. 74 degrees in new york city. the early spring continues, actually. i guess we'd call this early summer. stay cool up there. >> thanks, rob marciano.

23 minutes past the hour. we're minding your business this morning. it turn out delta, yes, the airline, is getting into the oil refinery business. my dear colleague christine romans, three children, works 20 hours a day, makes chicken pot pies for dinner but finds time to go to pennsylvania to look at an oil refinery to check out if the rumors are true. lo and behold. >> it sounds outlandish but it might be brilliant. delta runs on jet fuel. it needs to secure those supplies. as you know, the oil market has been really crazy lately. by buying an oil refinery it has secured 80% of its jet fuel needs, cutting out the middleman

®agd making sure it has its supplies. we've been hearing rumblings about this. it sounded so outlandish at first but analysts say it's starting to make sense. >> tell me what's happening with delta and the refinery. >> they will try something interesting. i think they're looking at it and saying we're tired of paying $10 or more over the price of crude, which is very expensive for jet fuel. >> what delta has secured is the delivery network for jet fuel reaching throughout the northeast including its hubs at new york's jfk and laguardia airports. the price tag for the refinely itself, $150 million to the owner, conoco phillips. will it help delta save money? they think so. >> the refinery might cost $150 million, $200 million. that's less than they would pay for a modern 777 aircraft. >> think of that, the price of a plane, they secure their jet fuel supplies. the trainer facility is idled right now. the fact that an airline would

want an oil refinery upscores an unfolding drama in the northeast. nearly half of the refining capacity on the east coast has either shut down or could shut down later this year. the big concern here if you have the disruptions happening, potential disruptions in the northeast, delta wants to make sure the planes are taking off at jfk and laguardia, cutting out the middleman. will they make money? the company says maybe $300 million. they are securing supplies of jet fall. that's the most important part here. >> one of the things i remember you saying to me that stuck with me, when you're doubling down on dead dinosaurs it's a questionable policy. when i heard that officially you were talking to say for the same price as a modern 777 we could do this. but doesn't the modern 777 have better fuel capacities, better -- >> yes. >> streamlined? >> think about this, the company has said this, if they wanted to switch out to more fuel efficient smaller planes they'd have to use about $2.5 billion

stand this morning. she broke down in tears yesterday after jurors had to be excused after she testified how the former senator asked her family to hide an affair that he was having for the good of the country. christine? a really uplifting story this morning. people are calling firefighter rosa tullis a hero. a 1-year-old fell to the bottom of a 20-foot storm drain and was trapped. firefighters had only one option with the opening only one foot wide. send in rosa tullis. wearing only a t-shirt and a pair of pants she was lowered into the drain and rescued this terrified baby. the firefighters heroics left the grandmother speechless. >> oh, wow, thank god. they were relieved. >> the hero firefighter joins us

now. she's in the cnn center in atlanta. and daniel's brother also joining us. set it up for me. how did he fall down there? >> he slipped and fell. >> he just slipped and fell? you could hear him crying at the bottom of the drain i take it? >> yes. >> oh, my goodness. you must have been just terrified. that's where the police and fire come on the rescue. rosa, you got there. you took a look at the opening of that drain and you were their only option. >> yes, that's correct. it was pretty small. so it was me. >> and you're small. >> yes. >> you're pretty small. >> i'm 4'11". >> you could fit in there. couldn't bring any gear or lower a ladder down, is that correct? >> that's correct. that was the first option we were going to try.

putting the ladder down narrowed the opening so that won't going to work. and then the second one, we did the harness and we decided to hoist the baby up and over to have someone to bring him in from the top of the opening. >> you shimmied down with the harness then? >> yes. i was lowered down with the full body harness and rope. >> tell me, when you were coming down, you could hear him at the bottom of the dwayne? >> yes.ç we had seen him because he was moving around. eventually we could see him down there. >> what did he do when you got there close to him? >> he was like velcro, i tell you, he was clutching. i could hardly manipulate him because he was terrified. he just really didn't want me to take my hand off of him. it was a little bit difficult and we did not have that much space to maneuver but we were able to kind of get him up to my shoulders and then like a

military press over my head. >> rosa, are you claustrophobic? >> i am. >> oh, my goodness. you're claustrophobic but at the bottom you have a crying baby. that must help you get over the kla claustrophobia quickly. >> yes. we had puppies last year in the same type of scenario. that's like the third time. it felt better but it was a smaller space. you have to get the job done. >> let me bring you back in. how is he doing now? >> he's good. he's fine. >> what did the pediatrician say? you said the pediatrician, he saw his doctor. he just has some cuts and scrapes but he's going to be okay? >> yes. he went to the pediatrician yesterday. and they said he was all right, just a few minor abrasions. >> wow, rosa, you have boys.

were you thinking about your children as you were doing this or just thinking about doing your job. >> my boys are not little anymore. they're 21 and 14. a little bit of both. darnell is similar to my youngest son. as a mother it does play into it a bit. because you, as a parent, can imagine what if that was your child. >> oh, wow. tell me, how did he fall down there? was he playing around? it's such a small opening. you can hardly imagine that he could slip into that little spot. >> he was trying to sit down and fell. >> trying to sit down. he was trying to sit down on the edge or trying to sit down and he slipped in there, huh? >> yes. >> i tell you, the one thing about it is, he's so little, he'll never remember any of this. it will be such an interesting story to tell him, mom, but he'll never remember this. rosa, tell me, was it all adrenaline as you were going down? >> yes. it was adrenaline.

and the confidence in my crew and their expertise also. it definitely was a joint effort. so i never felt unsafe, but, again, it's the phobia of the cramped space. but it didn't take an extremely long time. >> a curious little bit and a 20-foot long drain, a 4'11" firefighter and a mother this morning who is incredibly relieved i'm sure. rosa, thank you both. give our best and give a kiss to your little guy, please. >> i will. >> thank you so much. >> thank you. >> awesome, rosa tullis. christine, thank you for that. it's 37 minutes after the top of the ióur. one year after osama bin laden was killed ware starting to learn more about the leader of al qaeda. months before he was killed bin laden was apparently worried about his legacy and al qaeda's reputation. "the washington post" is reporting that bin laden didn't like the idea of a proposed killing machine that was dubbed the human lawnmower.

it was widely talked about on al qaeda websites and involved attaching rotating blades to the front of a pickup truck and driving that pickup truck into crowds. bin laden says he was focused on a bigger target. cnn's peter bergen traveled to the former pakistani compound and got access to the documents found in the raid. >> reporter: bin laden's calling for bigger attacks, kill president obama, kill general petraeus and his guys are pushing back and saying, wait a minute, we're under pressure from the drones, attacking the united states is not that easy. >> bergen also says bin laden's new al qaeda reputation was tarnished and that bin laden was very afraid of what u.s. strikes -- drone strikes were doing to that terrorist organization as well. two grandparents have been arrested for taking their granddaughter on a dangerous ride. you will not believe this story. they hitched her hot wheels toy car to the back of their suv

with a dog leash and then took her on a little drive. deputies in sarasota county say both of the grandparents were drunk at the time. they say they spotted that little 7-year-old girl trailing behind the suv. parentally she was wearing nothing more than a bathing suit and certainly had no helmet. thankfully that little girl is okay this morning. private flight company space x is making history, successfully test firing the rocket that launched the first ever commercial space capsule to the international space station. it will be broadcast live on the space x website. they have a $1.6 billion contract with nasa to conduct missions to the space station. >> interesting. next up on "early start," playing politics with osama bin laden. how the president and his republican rival have turned the death of a terrorist into a campaign talking point. plus, how to have a lot of fun demolishing your home.

most having to be hunted down and shot. five of them surviving, and they've been kept in quarantine. state officials cleared the animals of any dangers or dangerous disease and thompson's widow intends to keep them on the farm. we'll talk to the man who took care of the animals while in quarantine, find out why he says it is not a good idea to return them to their old conditions. the grand ole opry filed a lawsuit against the government, claiming it caused $250 million in damage on the result of the negligence of the u.s. army corps of engineers, saying it botched the operation of the upper river dam and failed to give nashville ample oning. a gut-wrenching day on the

on the east coast, we're minding your business as we like to do on a regular basis. delta airlines is getting into the oil refinery business. it didn't sound right. i didn't get it at first. >> traynor, pennsylvania, is where we find this situation, delta, an airline, runs on jet fuel, 40% of its cost jet fuel and needs to secure supplies. by buying an oil refinery it secured 80% of its jet fuel needs cutting out the middleman. we've been hearing rumblings but to analysts it started to make sense. >> when we first heard about it two months ago i said no way in the world. >> reporter: tell me what's happening with delta and the refinery. >> delta is going to try something really interesting, looking at it, saying we're tired of paying $10 or more over the price of crude, which is very expensive for jet fuel. >> they secured the delivery network for the blood that runs

its body, right, jet fuel, reaching throughout the northeast including hubs at jfk and laguardia airports. the price tag for the refinery itself $150 million to the owner conoco phillips. they say they'll put another $100 million to upgrade to maximize how much jet fuel they're getting out. it's a lot of money. will it help delta save money, $150 million, they think so. >> the refinery might cost $150 million, $200 million. from delta that's less than they'd pay for a modern 777 aircraft. >> they're also going to take the jet fuel, the other gasoline and diesel they refine there and trade it to other places for more jet fuel so they're just going to double down on the jet fuel and the traynor facility is idle. the fact an airline would want an oil refinery underscores a drama unfolding in the northeast. over half the refining on the east coast is shut down or could shut down later this year so

welcome back to "early start." i'm christine romans in for zoraida sambolin this morning. here what's happening at half past the hour. more than 100 internal al qaeda documents that detail future terror targets are being described by intelligence officials as pure gold. they were found by german authorities embedded in a porn video on a microchip taken from an al qaeda operative last year, they include plans to seize cruise ships and execute the passengers. may day protests for workers' rights happening all over the world. labor strike has shut down the golden gate ferry this morning and other cities are bracing for more disruption as occupy wall street plans to regroup. the wife of former john edwards aide, andrew young, will be back on the witness stand this morning.

cheri young broke down in tears yesterday and jurors had to be excused early after she testified the former senator asked her family to hide an affair he was having, hide it for the good of the country. >> thank you. half dozen dangerous and exotic animals including two leopards and a brown bear are on the verge of being shipped back to a farm where their owner mysteriously set them free into the community last year and then killed himself. you may remember animal control officers scrambling to find the dangerous animals on the loose in their community, and then being forced to hunt down and shoot almost all of the 56 animals to prevent people from being attacked and killed. you can see the carnage in these pictures here on your screen, and now the widow of the man who caused that crisis wants the animals back on her farm, and there may be nothing that anyone can do about this. tom south of the columbus zoo and aquarium where the surviving

leopards, bears and pri mamates have been housed joins with us. why are the animals going back where the crisis emanated from? >> unfortunately ohio is one of few states that do not have any type of standards of care or restrictions on restricted species or dangerous, wild animals. due to the fa kt that there isn't current laws, there's no choice for the state but, after quarantine, releasing them back to marianne thompson. >> is marianne thompson equipped to handle these animals because we clearly know her husband was not after he released them and killed himself and put that community in such dire danger. >> i was there on october 19th, part of the capture and recovery team, and it was a horrific day. what i saw as what you would consider their holding their

cages were definitely not adequate. i haven't been back to marianne thompson's property but the day that i was there, i saw the primates in small bird cages, the bear outside on an old pool deck in what i would consider a parrot cage, and the leopards in a chain-link fence with little to know shelter, feces, mud, just no standards of care at all, so we are deeply concern at the columbus zoo and aquarium that officials will inspect the facility before the animals will leave our property. >> so there's two issues here. number one is the danger to the animals themselves in conditions that you're describing and number two, the danger to people living nearby because it happened once, those animals got free, they were turned loose and as i understand it, miss

thompson is not very commune kaive with authorities. >> well, i can also tell you that when we were there, we witnessed some of their holding areas holes cut into the sides of the cages, so yes it's a concern. >> gosh. >> when we talk about the proper standards of care, we want to talk about proper holding facilities and having a perimeter fence, so if in an unfortunate incident an animal would leave its primary holding area, it would still be contained. >> the biggest question our viewers who perhaps don't live in your state would be asking now, aren't there laws in place at the very minimum just to keep people safe from others who would like to have pets like you're seeing on your screen who perhaps shouldn't be pets? >> there are laws. they would be enforced by law enforcement. there would also be health officials and humane societies

that could come in and ensure that there's proper care, and that it's safe for the general public. >> so we have to return the animals to mrs. thompson and then get a warrant of some kind to go and check the facility to make sure it's safe for the animals and safe for the surrounding neighbors? >> well, at the columbus zoo and aquarium, we have been a resource for the state and also for marianne thompson. we are providing the information and have served on task forces to educate the senators and legislation to pass a bill. fortunately, the bill has passed the senate and on to the house now, but in the meantime, it will be up to law enforcement and the state of ohio and also local health officials, humane society, to ensure that the animals are cared for and that people are safe. >> i certainly hope this story turns out well and i appreciate you taking the time to talk us

"the washington post" reports bin laden didn't like the proposed idea of using a killing machine dubbed the human lawnmower, widely talked about on al qaeda linked websites revolved attaching rotating blades to the front of a pickup truck and driving it into crowds. cnn's peter bergen traveled to the compound and had access to the documents found in the raid. >> the picture that emerged, bin laden is calling for big attacks, kill general we tray

yos, preside petraeus. >> bergen says bin laden knew al qaeda's reputation was tarnished and bin laden was afraid with what the drone strikes were doing to the terrorist organization. two grandparents arrested for hitching her hot wheels toy car to the back of their suv using dog leashes and taking her on a drive. deputies in sarasota county say both grandparents were drunk. they spotted the 7-year-old girl wearing only a bathing suit and no helmet. thankfully the little girl was not harmed. because sometimes it's cool to break stuff here's video of a british tank flattening a home in midtown, minnesota. it was slated for demolition anyway so the owners decided to have a little fun. we figure we'd show you what tanks can do. >> only in casota would they do

comments romney made four years ago when he was first running for the white house questioning whether it would be worth getting bin laden and how much of an effect it would have on taking out al qaeda's terrorist network. the romney campaign responding to the president's comments saying this "it's unfortunate president obama would prefer to use what was a good day for all americans as a cheap political ploy and an opportunity to distort governor romney's strong policies on the war on terror." this started thursday, a campaign video from the obama campaign questioning romney and using president clinton to praise president obama's decision-making process. we've heard a lot of criticism from republicans pushing back saying the president and his team is definitely making way too much of this and politicizing it. here is the conservative columnist and commentator jonah
