"early start" begins now. >> good morning. i'm ashleigh banfield. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. it's 5:00 a.m. >> hard to talk at this hour. >> we start with this. new details about how the cia stopped an al qaeda plot to blow a passenger jet out of the sky. all of this right around the anniversary of osama bin laden's death. we've got new fears about whether that bomb just might have been undetectible. senior administration officials telling cnn that the intended user of the bomb is, quote, not

a threat anymore. u.s. counterterrorism official says the explosive device is similar to the one that was used by the so-called underwear bomber back on christmas day of 2009. only this time, more sophisticated and harder to detect. barbara starr is live at the pentagon this morning. what do we know about the bomb itself and about how this all unfolded? >> well, very little detail being made public at this point, ashleigh because officials say operations intelligence operations are still ongoing. clearly, pointing to the fact they still feel there are elements of whatever this organization is that was behind this throughout. and they believe it is al qaeda in yemen known as aqap. al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. as for the bomb itself, all the indications are that it was very similar. as you said, to devices used by aqap in both the christmas day underwear bomber and another

plot after that to put bombs inside printer cartridges and put them on aircraft bound for the united states using material called petn, white powdery substances, a detonator. very difficult to detect by conventional x-ray machines. so they are looking -- the fbi has the device, they say. they are looking at all of it trying to do the technical, the forensic analysis on it. very tantalizing detail. the person who would have used the bomb no longer a threat. nobody in the government is saying whether that person is dead or in custody. ashleigh? >> we went through this last week. we went through the anniversary. we heard from the government there was no credible threat and now we're hearing all of this. what do we know about this guy? dead, alive, in custody? >> as i said, we don't know if whether he's dead or in custody, but he would have perhaps just been the front man for all of this. the real person they are looking for is a man named ibrahim al

asiri, part of al qaeda in the, a rabbian peninsula in yemen. a very key if not senior operative for al qaeda there and a master bombmaker by all accounts. said to really be the brains behind these previous incidents using these types of bombs. he's the guy they want to get, and the financing, the networking and the organization that goes with him because this now would be at least the third time we know of where he and his organization have basically been able to reach out and touch potentially in the united states. and that makes al qaeda in yemen probably right now the most serious al qaeda direct threat to the united states, according to officials, ashleigh. >> barbara starr, thanks for checking that out for us. secretary of state hillary clinton is wrapping up her visit to india this morning. she's also weighing in on this foiled al qaeda plot to blow up a u.s.-bound passenger jet.

>> the plot itself indicates that the terrorists keep trying. they keep trying to devise more and more perverse and terrible ways to kill innocent people. and it's a reminder as to why we have to remain vigilant. >> jill do herty is travel with the secretary of state and joins us live from new delhi, india. it's my assumption she was probably not caught off guard like we all were by this. >> no, she wasn't. although i have to say it came -- boek just at the end of her trip and she, of course, has been in china, in bangladesh and in india. and at all of those stops, this subject of terrorism has come up, so she was ready, and she said it's a threat to everyone. >> terrorists in pakistan have killed more than 30,000

pakistanis. so it's very much about the people of pakistan and their right to go to a market or go to a mosque to live their lives. and we need stronger, more concerted efforts on behalf of governments and societies against the scourge of terrorism. >> right. so hillary clinton, as you mentioned, wrapping up her trip. she should be leaving for the states. and we managed at the last minute to get good interview with her and we'll be showing that a little bit later on cnn. >> but what did she say and was she referring much to yemen and its efforts to perhaps help us to track down this latest plot? >> no, not really. that was not the focus of our interview. i really wanted to get into that subject of china, mr. chen. remember, he is still in a hospital. he is supposed to be coming to the united states.

and the big question is, will the chinese actually let him go. will they fulfill their part of the bargain. so we talked about that. careful but detailed answer from the secretary. also some things on iran and oil sanctions. and then also a very funny sound at the end. i asked her about this hillary au naturel which is bouncing around the blogosphere about not wearing makeup and wearing glasses which we saw on this trip. she said at my point in life, if i don't want to wear glasses, i'm not going to wear glasses. if i don't want to wear makeup, i'm not going to wear makeup. >> lucky her she doesn't have to wear those glasses. look forward to getting some of that interview cut. we'll be running some of that sound just a little later on in the program. good work, jill. jill dougherty for us live in india this morning. two police officers in california face criminal charges this morning for the beating death of a homeless man.

it was all captured on video. i have a warning for you. some of the pictures you are about to see are very disturbing. at a preliminary hearing yesterday in fullerton, california, spectators gasped when they saw photos of 37-year-old kelly thomas after he had been beaten by the officers last july. the mentally ill homeless man died five days after the incident. the officers, ten-year veteran manuel ramos and jay cicinelli face charges from second-degree murder to felony use of excessive force. here's video from the night of the beating. >> get on the ground! get on the ground! >> i'm sorry, dude. i'm sorry. please. >> roll over! not guilty. the orange county coroner lists thomas' death as a homicide. three states are holding primaries today. but with the republican nomination all but decided at this point. and there's a ballot initiative in north carolina and a six-term senator from indiana are getting the most attention. the voters head to the polls in indiana, west virginia and north carolina. mitt romney needing just more than 300 more delegates to officially clinch the nomination. funny because we all sort of forgot about the math. just gave up on it. there's 300 left. in north carolina, it seems all the talk is about amendment one. that's a measure that's going to change the state's constitution to read marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized, and that is if that amendment passes. evangelist billy graham has taken out pull-page ads in 14 north carolina newspapers reporting this amendment. however, former president bill

clinton recorded a robo call denouncing it. and also in indian athe senate's longest serving republican may not actually survive a primary challenge. six-term senator dick lugar trailing the tea party-backed state treasurer and trailing by double digits in the polls. at 8:00 eastern time on "starting point," dick lugar will join soledad o'brien to talk about his career and that major battle that he is facing today. one month after dropping out of the race, rick santorum is finally getting behind mitt romney for president. after meeting with romney in pittsburgh last week, santorum just released an e-mail to his supporters saying he now has a better understanding of where his former rival stands on conservative issues. here's the key passage in that e-mail. quote, above all else, we both agree that president obama must be defeated. the task will not be easy. it will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be

hospital. the hero also suffered severe burns to his waist and abdomen. >> good luck to him. this one will really get you going. two dolphins killed in a drug overdose at an amusement park in switzerland. it's one of those headlines you just cannot believe. "the daily mail" is reporting this one. the dolphins were at this zoo park and there was a weekend long rave party that was booked at this park. don't ask me why. it's insane. this happened in november. and some of the experts first thought these dolphins died because of all the loud music and the thumbing and the high levels of noise would damage their immune system. others believe that something else was going on with these dolphins. maybe they were given antibiotics. but now they've got the solution. they've got the answer. toxicology reports say the animals died from a heroin substitute. opiats dangerous to them because

they stop breathing. they have to decide to go get a breath and when they have these opiates they can't do that. the officials say that apparently these dolphins died a very slow and painful death. now there could be a lawsuit. but it is an ugly story no matter how you slice it. and again, how do you have a party at a zoo like this where something like this could happen? >> i'm sure it will never happen again. for the vets, those animals are like their children so to watch them die like that. >> just horrible. the bloomberg view published internal e-mails from tom lehman brothers executives sent right before the firm's collapse. it suggests executives ignored signed the company was headed for trouble. one e-mail reveals executives rejected an injection of capital from chinese investment bank civic group. capital lehman desperately needed. the cfo goldfarb rights, this

want you to know how deeply i regret how this issue has affected the company and all of you. we have all been working very hard to move the company forward and this has had the opposite effect. for that i take full responsibility and want to apologize. mark zuckerberg with no college degree. he's rung this amazing company that everyone is talking about and then the guy at yahoo! trying to defend some inadvertent error as it's been called on his resume from maybe years back. it's followed him a long time. a lot of people talking about this yahoo! generation of this guy who will presumably looks like he's generation x, maybe he thought he had to have the computer science degree to get where he is. today maybe you don't have to make those little lies. but here is something really interesting. when you talk to people who study this, faking your education or exaggerating or fibbing your education is the top thing that people do on their resumes. and it usually starts when they are young and then follows you forever. >> you're stuck. >> 57% of hiring managers have

welcome back to "early start." i'm ashleigh banfield. the fbi is analyzing a new bomb threat from al qaeda after the cia stopped a plot to blow up a passenger jet that was bound for the united states. that device is similar to the one the underwear bomber used to try to ignite on christmas day in 2009. officials say it also came from the same lab of al qaeda's chief bombmaker who is still on the loose this morning. and north carolina voters are heading to the polls today to decide whether they are in favor of a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. it's called amendment one and it would change the state's constitution to read, quote, marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized. also, remember rick santorum? he's finally endorsed mitt romney. what do you know except it wasn't like this. no clapping and cheering.

a month after dropping out of the race, the former pennsylvania senator just sent an e-mail to the supporters. the endorsement was in paragraph 13 and he said also, quote, above all else, we both agree that president obama must be defeated. so that was the endorsement. zoraida? >> lukewarm. >> very much. >> thank you ashleigh. new fears this morning about the safety of two missing young tennessee girls after police positively identified the bodies of the mother and sister. at a home where it is believed the suspect had been staying in mississippi, the fbi says it believes the two young girls are in extreme danger and have been disguised by this man. adam mayes, a family friend who is suspected of kidnapping them nearly two weeks ago now. cnn's martin savidge is live in atlanta following all of the latest developments. what is the latest this morning, martin? >> reporter: the latest is that grim discovery which has now been announced. these bodies were found over the weekend but it wasn't until late

last night that the fbi finally released the identities and now we know it is the mother, 31-year-old jo ann bain and her eldest daughter, 14-year-old adrienne bain. that leaves the whereabouts of the two other daughters, that is the 12-year-old and the 8-year-old believed to be in the hands of adam mayes and, of course, believed to be, by all accounts of authorities, to be in extreme danger. this is just a horrible story that began on april 27th when jo ann bain and her daughters were reported missing by her husband. they thought maybe she ran off with adam mayes. things changed when they found her abandoned car at the side of a dirt road. adam mayes was brought in for questioning. he then was let go. a couple of days later they went back to talk to him and he vanished. that's when he went to the property and they checked out the property of adam mayes and that's where they discovered the shallow grave. this is why there is a -- not

quite nationwide but a regional manhunt taking place to try to find adam mayes. >> you mentioned perhaps she ran off with him. what was the relationship between mayes and the bain family? >> that's what makes this story so sad and also so very interesting. the fact that apparently adam mayes had a long time good relationship with this family. they were considered very, very close. he used to have the girls over at his place in mississippi for visits. he would travel with the family when they would go to arizona. in fact, the aunt of jo ann bain spoke to hln last night. this is how she described his feelings toward those girls. >> i think he said -- i think he told some people that all three of the girls was his. i think, you know, he was just hopefully thinking that one day they would be his family, that jo ann would probably go and live with him and bring the girls and them just all be a

family together. >> now whether he was speaking figuratively or whether he was actually delusional as to those girls being his, it is clear right now, two young girls are in extreme danger. we should point out that the authorities are saying that adam mayes may be going under some alternate aliases. one of them being christopher zachary wild or paco rodriguez. and again, there's a $50,000 reward out there for anyone who finds the whereabouts of adam mayes or these two young girls. >> i got to tell you, martin. when you were talking about his relationship and him perhaps thinking those were his daughters, which is one of the neighbors said, delusional did come to mind. are we hearing anything about him in particular? what kind of man he was. does he have a criminal history? >> criminal history we don't know yet. we're still digging on that. but the people who knew him, his neighbors and landlord all described him as a great guy. they point out and say he was almost child-like or a kid

acting in an adult's body. he was fun-loving, good to people. and that if anyone had told them ahead of time that he would be accused of carrying out abduction and now murder, they never would have believed it. >> martin, i don't mean to put you on the spot but i thought i read something about a reward being given out for any information? >> federal authorities and the u.s. marshals service, that's the fbi and the u.s. marshals service, $50,000 for information leading to the whereabouts of adam mayes and his arrest and also to find these young girls. money is not the object here. it's finding those last two girls. bringing them safely back home. >> we certainly hope so. martin savidge live in atlanta. thank you. 37 minutes past 5:00 on the east coast. the family of junior seau is now waiting to decide whether to donate the nfl veteran's brain to research for study. seau's family is consult with elders from their samoan culture before making that final decision. both of his parents are from

american samoa. the 43-year-old died of a gunshot wound to the chest last week in an apparent suicide. there is speculation whether repeated hits to his head from his football career were a factor in his death. shocking new statistics revealed in a cdc report. obesity rates projected to soar pushing health costs to new heights as well. right now 35% of americans are obese. but experts predict 42% will be obese. this is by 2030. that's 30 million more americans in just 18 years. and that rise is going to cost us tacking on an additional $550 billion to our medical costs. mitt romney is insisting he deserves a lot of credit for the rescue of america's auto industry. romney has been blasted by democrats and republicans for his 2008 view that we should let detroit go bankrupt. but listen to what he told a tv reporter in cleveland yesterday when that very topic came up.

>> the auto companies needed to go through bankruptcy before government help. and, frankly, that's finally what the president did. he finally took them through bankruptcy. that was the right course. i argued for it from the beginning. finally when that was done and help was given, the companies got back on their feet. so i'll take a lot of credit for the fact this industry has come back. >> well, it is an interesting argument. can't fight that. but the white house certainly was quick to weigh in saying that romney is trying to fool the american people. spokesman for the president accusing him of, quote, sinking to a new low in dishonesty. and google getting the green light to test its self-driving car on actual roads. nevada becoming the first state to grant licenses for cars that drive themselves. two people still have to be inside the car in case something goes haywire there, but google says the cars have traveled 200,000 miles in test runs so far without an accident. the head of nevada's dmv says the robo cars may be available

prosecutors say the friend saw him stab the victim 34 times while screaming you're going to die. he reportedly suffers from bipolar disorder and was just released from the hospital following a suicide attempt. a former player for the new orleans saints says coaches told him to deny the team's bounty program. ex-defensive lineman anthony har grave submitted a signed statement accusing coaches of telling him to, quote, play dumb. hargrave did as he was instructed, denying knowledge to an nfl security officer back in 2010. be careful what you like on facebook. clicking that little blue thumb could get you fired. six sheriffs employees in virginia were canned for liking the sheriff's political opponent. the case went to district court. the judge backed the sheriff ruling the like button isn't protected free speech. that ruling is expected to be

i'm ashleigh banfield. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. it's 6:00 a.m. here in the east, just about. new details about how the cia stopped an al qaeda plot to blow a passenger jet out of the sky around the one-year anniversary of osama of osama bin laden's death. new fears about whether the bomb may have been undetectible. senior administration official told cnn that the intended user of the bomb is not a threat anymore. u.s. counterterrorism official says the explosiove device is similar to the so-called underwear bomber on christmas day 2009. barbara star is live at the pentagon. what can you tell us about the woman, sounds scary that it's undetectible by security. >> that's what the fbi is analyzing, how undetectible it

might be. nic robertson is reporting that saudi arabia was the source of the tip about the device, the plot this whole effort to try to put another bomb an an airline er bound for the united states. the fbi has the device and so it's looking at it. this is something al qaeda in yemen has tried to put through before, no metal content devices on planes bound for the united states. you remember the underwear bomber, the plot to put these types of devices in printer cartridges, things that are very difficult to detect by these x-ray and screening machines. they have the device. they're not saying what happened to the person that may have been the so-called bomber planning to use it. zoraida? >> do we have any more details

about that device? we're hearing perhaps it's undetectible but what else do we know about it? >> we don't know much about it. behind the scenes it's pretty clear the person they're looking for is a man named even ram al asiri. he's responsible for previous devices like this, the one we just mentioned and another attack that took place inside saudi arabia aimed at a high level saudi official but wound up killing the bomber's brother. they've wrapped up everything with this particular plot and stepping up what they can do to go after al qaeda in yemen, find asiri, get to him and go after that al qaeda organization, al qaeda in yemen has been able to reach out and touch, thankfully

not successfully but reach out and touch the united states, to be able to launch these types of threats against u.s. airliners. >> the reason they know the association, was it a fingerprint on a bomb previously? was that it? >> i'm not familiar with that but the u.s. intelligence community has long believed and it has some pretty strong indications that this man, al asiri, is the expert behind all of this effort to a large extent with al qaeda in yemen. he's really according to u.s. intelligence community, one hates to use the phrase the master bombmaker but by all accounts he really is, working on perfecting this notion of bomb devices essentially imp vitz advised explosive devices very difficult to detect by airport security. it's a cat and mouse game.

to china, bangladesh and here to new delhi. when she was talking about that, it reminded me very much of almost every stop the secretary talks about terrorism, its eight a very big subject, as you can imagine, in this part of the world and here is what she said in a broader sense about the threat. >> terrorists in pakistan have killed more than 30,000 pakistanis. so it's very much about the people of pakistan and their right to go to a market or go to a mosque, to live their lives, and we need stronger, more concerted efforts on behalf of governments and societies against the scourge of terrorism. >> so that is what she's trying to do, in fact, on this trip, a lot of the security and trying to bring these countries together in some cohesive form so that they can fight terrorism. >> i know that you sat down and

had an exclusive interview with secretary of state clinton. what did she have to say to you? >> well the two subjects that we got into primarily were china, mr. chen, who is still in the hospital, and whether he will be able to get out to the united states, and she was pretty circumspect in talking about that but made it clear that the united states expects that to happen and we talked about a subject that's hot here in india, the iranian oil sanctions because india is being asked by the united states, as are many other countries to cut back on imports of iranian oil and the indians are not happy about it because their economy is growing very fast so it's a hot button issue and very important and she's hoping they will, they expect they've done a lot and hope they'll do more. >> you had a lighter moment with

her as well. can you share that? >> oh, yes. well we talked about, if you can imagine this, hair and makeup, which is a big subject for hillary clinton over the years and we're going to get the sound, we're editing it so we'll get it soon. see essentialcy she said if i don't want to wear my glasses, i'll wear my glasses and if i don't want to wear my makeup, i won't wear my makeup, she's at that time in her life. >> she's earned it. coming up, congressman peter king joins soledad o'brien live. >> seven minutes past 6:00 on the east coast. two police officers in fullerton, california, are facing criminal charges this morning for the beating death of a homeless man that was captured on video. at a preliminary hearing yesterday spectators were shown some graphic photos of

welcome back to "early start." 14 minutes past six. the search for a tennessee mortgage and her three daughters who disappeared three weeks ago has taken a rather grim turn. the bodies of 31-year-old joann bain and 14-year-old daughter adrienne were found in the backyard of a mississippi home this past weekend. authorities are searching for joann's other two daughters, 12-year-old alexandria and 8-year-old kyliyah. they're searching for the family

friend named adam mayes. those bodies were found in a shallow grave in his home. martin savidge is live in atlanta with details. take us a little further. what are they telling us about how this mystery is unfolding? >> good morning, ashleigh. this is one of the stories you hope viewers pay close attention to. the lives of two young girls may literally hang in the balance of what the audience may know. april 27th jo ann bain and her three daughters vanished. investigators thought she might have run off with another man, adam mayes. couple of things began to develop, they found her vehicle abandoned at the side of a dirt road, they interviewed adam mayes, gave police conflicting information. they wanted to interview him again and adam mayes had vanished like the mother and three daughters. they went to his property in

mississippi and began searching there and it was over the weekend they made the discovery of the shallow graves. it wasn't until last night that federal authorities released the identity of who was in those graves, 31-year-old jo ann bain and her oldest daughter. which means there is a 12-year-old and 8-year-old believed to still be in the custody of adam mayes and they are thought to be in extreme danger, there is a major manhunt under way in western tennessee and federal agents are manning checkpoints trying to find the man and the two young girls. that's where it stands now. >> martin they give us conflicting reports about this man saying they were family friends and yet he's extremely dangerous. are they giving us further details what kind of a relationship he had with this family? >> it's not coming from authorities. the information we're getting is coming from neighbors and people who knew the family. it's clear adam mayes was a close family friend of the

bain's for years. he was in the bain's family home the night before the mother and daughters disappeared. apparently helping them pack for what was intended to be a move to arizona. the aunt of jo ann bain was on hln last night and talked about what may have happened next. listen. >> the only thing i can come up with is that adam had a gun. he always had a gun on him, and i think he went in and got one of the children, one of the girls, and held a gun to the girl's head and woke jo ann up and told her to come on or he would kill them and not make a sound, not wake anybody up, and they would just all leave together. >> take a good look at adam mayes there. it's possible he has altered his appearance. authorities believe the children's appearance has already been changed, that their hair has been cut shot and

while her 4-year-old daughter is there with her. after refusing to give up her purse the woman runs away, leaving the daughter there. luckily, the young girl was able to get away, too. the mother was stabbed in the collarbone trying to get into a store. she's okay. the attacker got away. a roofer rescued after falling 40 feet into a vat of acid thanks to a co-worker who jumped into the acid after him. the man fell through the roof of a metal tube-making factory in new jersey. co-worker jumped into the waist-deep tank of acid, pulled him out with the help of three other workers. apparently steam had eaten away the roof. the victim was air lifted to the hospital with life-threatening burns and the hero also suffered severe burns to his waist and abdomen. the reward keeps growing for at rest and conviction of whoever slaughtered a rare white buffalo calf in buffalo, texas, a week before its first birthday. the calf is revered by many

>> amongst. ten points moudock is up. in early march lugar with a slight advantage but not a lot and the turnaround since them. zorai zoraida, i've been talking to local tea party groups in indiana, they've been targeting lugar since before the 2010 midterm elections. they have a lot of problems with him and his stances on the issues, feel he's way too moderate for indiana and the thing that's hurt him also is residency, in the last couple of weeks, that he doesn't own a home in indiana anymore, he owns a home here in the washington, d.c., area. it could be the end of the line for dick lugar who is somebody known as reaching across the aisle to work with the other side especially on foreign policy achievements. look at this, if lugar loses he won't be the only moderate who is leaving the senate. bunch of others are retiring, olympia snowe of maine, joe lieberman of connecticut and

kent conrad and ben nelson of north dakota and nebraska. lot of senators able to work with the other side to get things done will not be there most likely next year. >> exactly what president obama had wanted. a big endorsement for romney last night. i'm calling it a little underwhelming. tell us about it. >> came out around 11:00 last night from former senator rick santorum. he suspended his campaign for the gop nomination back in april. he met with mitt romney last friday, a 90-minute meeting in the pittsburgh area. he sends out the e-mail to supporters, go 13 graphs down, above all else, we both agree that president obama must be defeated. the task will not be easy. it will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious. he is urging governor romney to

as mr. chen a few days after he had arrived and of course, all of the diplomatic drama happened while she was there. when i asked her whether or not china will follow through on its promise, it was a very nuanced but important sound, so let's listen to it. >> i think that we're looking forward to welcoming him to the united states. he is still in the hospital, receiving medical treatment, some of which was recommended by the embassy doctors who examined him. we remain in close contact with him. we know that chinese officials have visited him in the hospital in order to begin processing necessary papers, and we're doing the same in order to prepare the way so that he can come here and pursue his

studies. >> and one of the other issues, of course, is that there is a smear campaign against chen right now, and also some of his friends and relatives are being arrested, some of them have been beaten, and i asked the secretary about that. she said that things like that are being raised, but again, very careful in saying only that we are looking forward to welcoming him in the united states. so you can read into that i think ashleigh that the united states wants to make sure he actually gets out, obviously, before saying anything much stronger. >> and touch on if you will, jill, will the secretary's stance on pakistan. she had very hard words for pakistan in terms of what they're doing to help combat the war on terror. >> she did. it's a constant issue in relations between the united states and pakistan. is pakistan doing enough to fight terrorism? we've had the issue of the
