most widespread drought since the 1930s. dana, tell us what did get done and what is left on the table for weeks? >> i'll answer that question, but first i want to show you place that you're familiar with. this is the russell rotunda. the reason we wanted to show you the wide view is because, as you know, this is usually bustling the reporters, senators and people because this is the place to be when congress is in town. now you can hear a pin drop. that is because congress is gone until september. to answer your question, what did they leave behind? a lot unfinished. be hold a ritual of the modern republic. instead of boasting about accomplishments, bipartisan land wringing. >> i am disappointed, perplexed and somewhat confused. >> there's so much unfished

business. >> the american people are probably more polarized than any time since i've been here. as a result we see that polarization reflected here in the halls of congress. >> this is a moment of disappointment that i cannot conceal. >> reporter: legislation, national security experts call critical from protecting america. stuck in the senate because of partisan differences but that's just one stalled bill on a countless list of others from food stamp to drought relief. legislation left on the table that really affects people's jobs and lives. to be fair, congress did get some important things done like extending federal aid for student loans and sanctioning iran. it's not just our imagination, it has been far less productive than in the past. take a look at this. so far this 112th congress has

enacted 151 laws. that's fewer than half the 385 laws enacted in the last congress and a lot fewer than the 460 laws enacted before that. a key reason this congress is less productive, divided government. more laws passed in the last decade when one party controlled all of congress. more laws don't necessarily mean better government. even so, this congress is slow to move legislation even issues both parties want to tackle. they can't find compromise. >> there's certainly plenty blame to go around. >> reporter: she was talking about cyber security but it could be said about congress's large stack of unfinished business. one congressman said he still has hope. >> it's a bit like an clock in my mind. i think the place has to hit bottom before they realize they have a problem and fix it.

>> reporter: congress will have a lot to fix in the fall. some of the biggest issues, huge issue and that is whether or how to extend that he has bush era tax cuts. >> it's even closer to the election when they come back. what do you think are the chances this gets any better? >> reporter: between now and november, slim to none. i can probably predict it could get worse in terms of polarization here. the big question will be what happens after november in the so-called lame duck session which will be long and very important. that's going to depend on what happens in november. that's really going to decide what happens with some of these big issues especially the one i mentioned. >> you'll be so busy following the election either way. dana bash from the hill. thanks for that. it's mitt romney versus h r

for quite some time. they are saying what are you hiding. show all your other tax returns. he says won't do it because he's doing what he needs to do. he says if he releases more it will give them more to search through and more to attack him on. >> there's this element of the obama campaign wanting to show that mitt romney is out of touch. at the very least his tax returns show how wealthy he is and fact that a lot of wealthy americans sort of find ways to pay a lower tax rate. i'm wondering how do the american people feel about this issue? is it resonating or are they just like i've heard way too much of this? >> there's a partisan devied on this. take a look at this. this poll was conducted a few weeks ago. all americans, 36% said they wanted to hear more about mitt romney's tax returns. when you break it down. over half democrats say they feel that way. only 18% of republicans. for republicans this is issue is not resonating. they are sticking with mitt

the widow of a man gunned down outside a day care center is now charged in connection

with his death. she was taken into custody yesterday. she conspired with her lover and former boss to have her husband killed so they could continue their affair and get about $3 million in the husband's life insurance money. prosecutors say they she really tripped up. she made mistakes when she testified against her ex-boss. how did her testimony hurt her own case? >> i called this back in february during newman's trial on this network. i called it. i knew this was going to happen to her. she set herself up by testifying. all those statements are going to be used in her trial against her and probably were the basis for the inindictment with respect to murder charges, perjury. the list goes on. >> attorneys for her alleged lover and ex-boss who you just referenced, he may cooperate with the prosecution that andrea played him like a yo-yo.

how does that affect the case? >> let me say this. mr. newman was found guilty but also found to be mentally ill. he's not going to be the greatest cooperatocooperator. he has a motive po lie because the prosecution is going to help him with sentencing or put him in facility that will be more comfortable. the next part in terms of his credibility, he's been deemed mentally ill. who is the yo-yo here? >> why is the prosecution considering that? >> i think the prosecution may have a weak case against her. they are just putting it out there. perhaps they want to have the defense kind of be on the defensive and be concerned that newman may testify. maybe they're trying to get a plea deal out of this so they don't have to go to trial. >> very interesting. very confusing case here. thank you so much for being with

us. we have some breaking news that we're going to jump to now. here is what's going on. multiple crews are at the scene of a wildfire. this is in cleveland county, oklahoma. this is happening right now in oklahoma. firefighters say the blaze began nearocally 123rd street and cemetery road. it's now moved to 127th street. this has gone a few blocks. no one has been evacuated. there's several people who have left voluntarilvoluntarily. you can imagine why. two helicopters are busines busg water. crews have closed roads. this is interesting, oklahoma. we've not seen a lot of wildfires there. >> it's been very dry. we went from about 50% d-3 to

about 70% of oklahoma being in d-3 in the past week. that means it hasn't rained at all. this is suburban oklahoma city. cleveland county is the next county south of oklahoma county and oklahoma county is where oklahoma city is. looking at the picture, winds blowing about 20 to 30 miles per hour. they are not keeping up with the fire. they just can't. you see pele out there with shirts and pants that are trying to beat the fire down. this is way beyond that. this is into trees. they are in the cedars and the scrub little oaks in there. i lived up in edmond. this will go for a while. in will go until the winds start to calm down. that may not be until 8:00 or 9:00 at night. if you smell smoke right now in cleveland county, we're talking not that far from moore. you can see this is even far

out. if you smell smoke right now, you may be in the path of the wind coming from that direction. that's the direction that the embers would come from. it's time to take those precautions. get the cars inside and get your stuff packed up. >> if people are not being evacuated yet, is that because this happened so quickly? this is something at a certain point you may have to take matters in your own hands in terms of making a choice to leave. >> don't make the government make you move. be smarter than that. move on your own. if you feel in danger move out of the way. that's a 30-foot flame that just sparked up. that's sending hot burning embers into the smoke and the sky. that will land down wind even if it's quarter mile down wind. they start to hyper jump. it's not just one big line of fire or smoke that runs along. you'll start to jump a half a

mile ahead with new embers coming. the ground has been so dry. even grass will burn at this dryness with this type of wind. look how the wind is blowing the fire straight down. there are homes in the way here. firefighters are in structure protection mode right now. they are not trying to put this out. they are trying to make the houses last through this. we'll get back to this in a second. >> we'll get more information. breaking news here at cnn as we follow this fire. this is in suburban oklahoma city. a populated area outside of oklahoma city. we'll have more for you after the break. ♪

we're following a wildfire developing in near oklahoma city, i should say. the suburbs outside of oklahoma city. this is a populated area. multiple crews are at the scene of this wildfire. this is cleveland county. firefighters say that the blaze began there in the area. it appears to have gone several blocks. this area where you can see lot of homes and structures. no one has been evacuated. it seems this is obviously popped up pretty recently. no injuries. that's the good news. we do understand there are

helicopters. we have seen video of them as they trying to dump water on the blaze. how can they keep up with this? >> you can't keep up with what they have there now. this is koco, my old affiliate in oklahoma city. i can find this fire on radar. radar picks up rain is what you're thinking. no radar picks up things in the sky. the radar is picking up the smoke particles in sky. this is a little bit farther off to the east. a little bit farther, maybe six, eight miles south of lake thunderbird. that's where we're talking about this wildfire right there. it's kind of in a wild land area. homes are far spread out. not really in neighborhoods. they haven't plowed this up to make big neighborhoods. there's more than one fire. that's how dry this is. that may have been a spark from one fire flying that far in the

wind and making another. this is going to be one of those days, there may be 40 wild nifi in oklahoma because there's a high risk of when one spark goes, i've seen people park on the side of the road and the catalytic converter being hot starting these dry grasses on fire. that's how tender and dry this tough is. it will go in an instant. >> the really illuminates not just the problem in oklahoma but a number of states that are experiencing this drought. can you sort of deduce that the sparks are jumping from one fire to another area. when you get a flame like that, a big flame and they are blowing

in the wind waiting to land somewhere else. the wheels can start wildfires there. it happens all the time. these wildfires go and you just need to be out of the way when they are coming to you. you can't save your home. you can't be a hero at this point in time. save yourself. >> just to be really clear but is this an oklahoma city suburb? >> i would still consider it to be oklahoma city suburb. it's probably 15 or 20 miles south of downtown oklahoma city. it's about eight miles or south of there. that yellow line that goes all the way south to norman and keeps going, that's a very highly populated area. the wind is blowing from the southwest and not toward that populated area. this has a good start. it has an awful lot of pieces to

we're keeping an eye right now on a wildfire outside of oklahoma city about 15 or 20 miles. this is a semi populated area of oklahoma city. no evacuations or injuries reported. no rain for some time there. there are helicopters on the scene dumping water, but it's really a tough road. very hard to keep up. jerry lyka is on the phone with us now. jerry, what can you tell us about this fire and the prognosis for containing it? >> well, the wind conditions have changed. they have increased some. we have gusts from the southwest, 15 to 25. the humidity keeps, seems like it's getting lower.

we're down to 13% and our temperature is 110 degrees. the conditions are very difficult for us. we do have a request for a second helicopter. the situation is not improving there. otherwise they would be scaling back. we can anticipate that it's going to get worse before it gets better. >> our meteorologist chad meyers jumping in here with a question. he's also familiar with the area. >> it seems like a dangerous day out there for you. tell me what the crews will go through with 110 degrees and getting close to the fire. are you going to try to contain these things or let them burn? >> unfortunately, in this particular situation we have many, many homes, 75 to 100 homes that are threatened. standing back and watching it happen is not an option. unfortunately, the firefighters can't tolerate with the protective clothing that they wear, dragging the hose and the

when i'm not covering the anchor desk for brooke, my regular beat is the white house in washington, d.c. i know first hand just how hard it is to get a one-on-one interview with the president of the united states unless you're a duo known as the common man and the torg. they got an exclusive eight and a half minutes with president obama wednesday when he was in the state campaigning. one of the topics, the may seem weird but it was the original dream team. the 1992 u.s. olympic basketball team and whether they would lose to this year's olympic team. >> there's no way that those

guys can be as dominate, this team can be as dominate as though guys were. the separation between us and other countries was so great. now you look at france, they have tony parker. you got, everybody can play. >> joining me now is the hosts from 97.1 the fan. were there any rules you had to follow. how did the campaign say you know we want to do this? >> flthere no rules. according to them they requested coming on our show. we set the rules. we said we wouldn't talk politics. it had to be 100% sports. we didn't have to have preapproved questions. they sent over suggested questions but they were not

going to be used in this interview. we just wanted to hit on everything that's topical in sports. very cool. i thought for sure he was going to want to preapprove the questions and he didn't. >> you threw the suggested questions out the door. >> they weren't any good. >> yeah, they weren't good. >> that's hilarious. why do you think you were chosen? you're in ohio. i will tell you to interject a little politics, there was a recent poll, that showed president obama up on mitt romney even within the margin of error. obama, 50. romney, 44. this obviously had something to do with why you were chosen. >> of course. he wanted to appeal to a certain demographic. we knew what it was. it's one of those things where people say do you feel like you're being used. maybe. i'm a talk show host.

it's not my job to baby sit the weak and the uninformed. if you're going to base your vote on sports conversation, then you need to inform yourself a bit better. >> we're on cnn now. we're hoping to hang around and be on "the situation room" with wolf in a bit. >> he's pretty knowledgeable about sports. were you impressed? >> absolutely. you know what i was impressed about is that he answered honestly and gave in length answers too. look at the college coaches out there. they are kind of defending joe paterno and penn state. he was very harsh. he gave his honest answer about tim tebow and the jets. that was pretty impressive. you know how the politicians are. they try to spin it a certain way but he gave an honest answer. >> common man mike. we have 30 seconds left. to be fair, have you reached out to mitt romney's people and is there an open invitation for him to come
