including that an organization that tracks hate groups has been monitoring wayne michael page for more than ten years now. police are looking into the 40-year-old page's ties to white supremicist. this photo of page in front of a swastika is front of a facebook page that's been taken down. he was the front man for a white power rock band whose music was promoted on a neo-nazi website. >> i would not have known that was wade. what has changed him i have no idea. and obviously we're never going to know. >> i'm totally devastated. his father is devastated. we're in pretty much in shock. >> david mattingly is live with us in oak creek, wisconsin. it's the southern poverty law center who said they've been tracking page since 2000. was law enforcement involved at

all? >> reporter: this man han talking about his believes for quite some time. he may have been off the radar when it comes to law enforcement. but for the people who knew him, they say that his thoughts about racial ideas were well known to them. this going back to when he was in the military. in the u.s. army. a former army buddy tells us he describes him as being a kind person, a quiet person, someone who had a soft spot for his friends, but who believed very strongly in a coming race war. and even when they talked to him about this idea, he wouldn't talk about or elaborate about why he felt that way. but he had some very strong beliefs. >> he would often mention the racial holy war that was coming. and you know, we just looked at it as he was trying to get attention to himself. because he was always the type

of person, even in a group of people, he would be off alone. >> even when he was maybe calling attention to himself by talking about his beliefs, his friends says that he never thought he would take those beliefs and do something violent with them. that's almost cliche when you look back at other cases. 15 to 20 years ago he was talking about these ideas that he still was holding when he carried out this shooting. >> there are still several victims in the hospital recovering including i believe brian murphy, the police officer who first responded to the scene. how is their recovery going? >> reporter: well the last update we had was yesterday evening at the hospital. all three are still in the hospital. all listed in critical condition. of course that officer shot eight to nine times, he's gone through a couple of surgeries.

yesterday was described as resting comfortably. we're hoping for the sake of all three of them that we hear a new update today and hear of some sort of improvement in their condition. >> that's something we are all hoping for. david mattingly in oak creek, wisconsin, thanks very much. among the six people killed in the massacre, the sikh's temple president is being remembered this morning as a hero for trying to stop shooter wade page with a butter knife. his actions gave several temple members time to run for cover. his son and mother recalling how proud and fearful he was when he bought the family's home. >> my dad put the flag outside when we first bought the house. we came home from school and said, that's going to be an eyesore. you have an elementary-sized flag in the front yard. and he said, do you see any

other american flags, our house, because it's our house -- >> we should know that we are close to the american friends, you know. >> and now we're in a form of protection. >> he said look, i don't want anybody doing anything to our house. >> in the next hour of "early start," you'll hear more the anderson cooper's interview with the son of the slain sikh leader. we'll be joined by mark potok, his civil rights organization had been tracking gun man wade page for 12 years. the fbi is in joplin, missouri this morning investigating a fire that burned a mosque to the ground a month after an attempted arson at the same facility. the fire broke out early monday morning at the islamic society of joplin, fortunately, no one was there at the time. last month an arson caught on

camera caused minor damage to the mosque. and the july footage, a suspect is seen aappropriating the mosque and throwing some kind of ignited object on the roof. coming up at 6:40 on early start, we'll hear from kimberly kuester, an american member of the islamic society of joplin. a big story to watch for in arizona, where attorneys for jared lee loughner are expected to enter at least one guilty plea on behalf of their client. he's accused of killing six people and wounding 13, including gabrielle giffords. that court hearing wil happen later this morning. if a federal judge finds him competent to stand trial. loughner has been getting psychological treatment at a missouri prison facility mpblt. president obama's campaign visit to contracts contract causing a commotion in the air. amateur video of two f-15 fighter jets intercepting a

small plane that strayed into the president's airspace over long island, new york. the pilot was escorted to the ground and questioned. half an hour later, another small plane was intercepted near new haven, connecticut. but norad said that plane was allowed to continue on to its investigation. >> how bizarre. they declare these no-fly zones. ant gas prices rise overnight for the ninth day in a row. the average price of unleaded is now 3.63 a gallon, a 1.5-cent increase overnight. aiming for gold, the u.s. women's soccer team pulls off an amazing semifinal win. i mean really amazing. outlasting canada in a gripping match. i was on the edge of my seat. team usa's youngest starter, alex morgan scored a header in the 123rd minute giving the u.s. team a 4-3 victory. and a date with japan in the finals with the gold medal at

welcome back to "early start," it's about 13 minutes after the hour. >> we're learning more about a key defection as more people die in syria this morning. the prime minister of syria declaring his allegiance to the rebels after showing up in jordan. i highest-ranking official to date to abandon president bashar al assad. meantime, the bloodshed continues, the opposition reports at least 11 more deaths just this morning on top of 161 deaths in fighting across the country yesterday. watch as amateur video shot inside homs, the nation's third

most populated city, shows droms being dr bombs being dropped on the city. >> cnn cannot independently confirm the authenticity of this particular video. meanwhile, fighting over the country's biggest city, aleppo is raging, with rebels maintaining their control over a number of areas inside the city. cnn international correspondent, ben wedeman has made his way into aleppo and we have him on the phone. what we see of aleppo is complete and utter crisis. >> reporter: we spent a very sleepless night inside the city in one of the areas controlled by the free syrian army. throughout the night, our building was shaken by multiple explosions and every ten minutes or so we heard large blasts

coming in quite close. early in the morning we went out into a bakery where about 100 people, men, women and children were lined up, and the situation is a very dire one. most of them don't have any cooking gas. some of them have to cook their food over a fire. many of the children seem to be somewhat traumatized by the fighting that's been going on around them. one man told me that they had left the city and come back in the hopes that things were calming down. but then we saw on the streets of the rebel-controlled parts of aleppo that people are starting to pack up and leave again. there's real concern that the syrian army is massing forces on the outskirts of aleppo in preparation for tanks to take the city. it definitely will be a bloodbath here. >> ben, is there no clear sign of humanitarian support or

efforts in that area? >> none whatsoever, coming from outside, cheerily, the syrians have been providing free showers for the bakery and therefore, the food, their bread is given to the people for free. but for real international humanitarian aid organizations, we can see nothing on the ground here. people very much feel that they've been left to their own devices. it's a very, because of the suffering, the lack of food, the generally diffult circumstances, the help they were hoping that they would get in terms of ammunition and hasn't arrived. there's desperation among fighters and civilians. >> ben wedeman live in aleppo for us, please be safe. it's 16 minutes after the hour.

a prank. >> i thought it was a joke at first, i was like, really? okay, ha, ha, now you can get me go. and it got real real, real quick. a guy grabbed me by the throat and got my wallet. >> both suspects were arrested and charged with robbery, harassment and disorderly conduct. that's the end of this show. >> dumb dumb dumb dumb. this morning we're getting the first color pictures from the mars rover "curiosity." today is the first full day on the rad planet after its spectacular landing, labeled seven minutes of terror. black-and-white photos beamed back showed one of the vehicle's wheels on the ground and another photo shows mount sharp in the distance. it's "curiosity"'s eventual destination. scientists at the jet propulsion

laboratory are expecting to receive weather data a little bit later this morning. >> that's so cool. it's about 6:18, we're getting an early read on the local news making national headlines. we have sports news for people sleeping in san diego, this from the north county "times." guess what the padres were sold overnight to a familiar baseball family. a group led by the o'malley family has purchased the padres for the relative bargain price of $700 million they were famous for moving the brooklyn dodgers to los angeles. a detroit boy sends his summer vacation selling snacks to save his city. i love this little boy. 9-year-old joshua smith has raised more than $3,000, selling

the past year. you put it in dollars and cents, at the end of june of took out a $200,000, put 20% down. paid $3700 as a closing costs, it's actually $300 less than a yearago. the lovely fee, cots of doing credit checks, title searches. why is this happening? >> new regulations so lenders are required t be more accurate when they estimate these closing costs for borrowers. so these were put in place a couple of years ago, they're required to give a good faith estimate of fees, within 10% of the actual amount that the buyer will pay. so listen, the good news is that lenders are doing a better job of estimating what the costs will be. now that they're required to be within 10%, what were they doing before shall? suddenly a light bulb came on and they were able to estimate better. what, were we being ripped off before? >> yes.

was and what officials actually knew about him and the motive is something that everybody wants answered as well. >> reporter: that's right, zoraida. it tells us a lot when the fbi comes out publicly and says they're looking at this as a possible case of domestic terrorism. it implies that wade page's beliefs as a white supremicist might have been what pushed him to launch this deadly attack on a sikh temple outside of milwaukee. but what we're looking at is going back, looking into his background. we're finding almost 20 years aghe was talking to friends in the army when he was enlisted in the u.s. army, talking about his fears of a coming race war. and we're also finding out that the southern poverty law center has been tracking him for years for his involvement in so-called white power rock bands. also, recently talking to neighbors who knew him both when he was a living recently with a girlfriend and later on his own, here in the milwaukee area, they didn't know about his beliefs.

in fact they knew very little about him at all. but their limited contact with him says they didn't have a very good impression of him, either. >> like a recluse, almost. he didn't talk to us at all. i'd say hi and he would go ugh. >> she was nice, when he moved in he just changed. it's you could tell he was running the show. he -- she wasn't as friendly any more. she wasn't -- it was kind of like she wasn't allowed to like talk to anybody any more. >> about the only thing clear in this investigation right now is the history of the gun. that wade page used in his rampage. it was purchased illegally here in the milwaukee area. there's a 24-hour waiting period or 48-hour waiting period which he abided by, all purchased legally, the .9-millimeter handgun is what he used to kill

six people and wound three in the hospital right now. >> there are still victims recovering in the hospital, including lieutenant brian murphy. shot nine times, do you know anything about their conditions? >> at the last press conference they had yesterday evening, the doctors came out talking so much about the senseless tragedy that occurred here. and telling us all that the three who are still in the hospital are still listed in critical condition. all of them undergoing some of them in some cases multiple surgeries. but again, as of yesterday, they're all listed in critical condition and everyone hoping today that we hear some kind of improvement in their cases. >> we certainly hope so. david mattingly live for us, thank you very much. president obama says the sikh temple massacre has left him heartbroken. in the coming days and weeks he wants to meet with law enforcement community and religious leaders and elected officials at every level to come up with way does reduce violence in america.

>> it will be important for us to reaffirm once again that in this country, regardless of what we look like, where we come from, who we worship, we are all one people and we look after one another. and we respect one another. >> at 6:30 eastern we'll examine the life of suspected sikh temple shooter wade page. and interview mark potok, his civil rights center has been tracking page for 12 years. the gloves are off in the reid/romney feud. the senate majority leader refusing to back down from his unsubstantiated claim that romney hasn't paid taxes for 12 years. he won't say who his source is. >> the whole controversy would end very quickly if he would release his income tax returns like everybody else has done. that's running for president.

i've answered the question. >> republicans aren't buying reid's claims about a source at bain capital. they believe white house senior adviser, david axelrod is behind the attack on romney. rnc spokesman shawn spicer said you've got to wonder if the so-called source is axelrod himself. hours after meeting with axelrod, reid comes out making baseless accusations. axelrod fires back saying they can put the whole matter to rest by simply observing the standard george romney and a generation of candidates have set by releasing the returns. firefighters in oklahoma reporting some progress in battling stubborn wildfires this morning. a fire in the town of cushing has been contained. more than a dozen fires throughout the state have scorched nearly 100,000 acres.

one woman has died and more than 120 homes have been destroyed. firefighters have been hampered by triple-digit temperatures, drought conditions and high winds. so let's get the latest on the conditioning there from karen mcginnis, in for rob marciano. >> good morning, we're watching this cushing fire, because it is self-described as the pipeline crossroads of the world. situated just to the northeast of oklahoma city, and it had consumed about 5,000 acres before firefighters reallygot a handle on it. but a number of fires raging across the state of oklahoma. where it has been deadly dry. with triple-digit temperatures. take a look at this mailbox. this coming from our ireporter, cammy himmerman, she said she saw this mailbox made of plastique, bending over because

of the excessive heat. across oklahoma we expect the temperatures to be around 100 degrees, and the air quality is extremely bad due to the smoke in the area. they're saying some of the roads are very dangerous to be traveling on, because the smoke and the visibility is so thick. and we take a look across the caribbean, this is tropical storm ernesto. but could become a hurricane right before making landfall later on today, during the evening or overnight hours. moves across the yucatan peninsula. then into the southern bay of campeche before making its way towards interior sections of mexico. in its wake, some sections of the yucatan into belize could see anywhere between six and 12 inches of rainfall we could see some mud or landslides across the region. hot temperatures prevail across the south central united states. and even in the northwest it's still going to be fairly warm. a few scattered storms, very welcomed across the southeast

he didn't talk much at all. i would say hi and he would just go ugh. >> she was nice and then when he moved in, she just changed, as, you could tell he was running the show. he, she wasn't as friendly any more. she wasn't -- it was kind of like she wasn't -- it was kind of like she wasn't allowed to talk to anybody anymore. >> david mattinglyis live in oak creek. they have been tracking page since 2000. do you know if law enforcement was involved as well? >> reporter: law enforcement says he was sort of flying under the radar, never really getting in trouble, not showing up in any of their files. in fact he wasn't under any active investigation today he carried out this deadly rampage at the sikh temple out of milwaukee. what we're learning about him, he had very strong beliefs about white supremacy, going back

almost 20 years. when he confided with a friend in the u.s. military when he was serving in the u.s. army talking about how he believed there was a -- >> he would often mention the racial holy war that was coming and you know, we just looked at it as he was trying to get attention to himself. because he was always the vulnerable type of person. even in a group of people, he would be off alone. >> and we know that the fbi, they've come out publicly saying they are looking at this as a possible case of domestic terrorism and that implies they believe it was possibly wade page's beliefs as a white supremacist that may have led him to carry out these deadly attacks here. >> can we switch to the victims. we know many of them are still

in the hospital. do you know anything about her condition this morning? >> reporter: the latest update we had was yesterday from the hospital hearing directly from the doctors themself. they had a lot to say about the police officer who was shot eight to nine times. he's undergone a couple of surgeries. two others also in the hospital. all three listed in critical condition yesterday. they've got a long road of recovery ahead of them. their degree is injury is varying depending on how many times each was shot. but we know they are working closely and keeping a close watch on them and we'll be watching today to see if any of those three have conditions upgrated. >> live from oak creek, thank you very much. >> the sikh temple president was one of those killed. he is being remembered this morning as a hero who tried to stop the shooter.

he gave several council members time to run for cover. he has no doubt his father saved lived. >> what he did that day, saved lives for so many people. >> he tried to stop? >> yes, i was told by several fbi agents that the blood trails is showing that a battle ensued and knife next to his body that ensued and blood trails leading to wherever the battle of blood was, one towards the kitchen and one where my dad laid to rest. he hopes americans can let go of the violence and hatred and become more civilized. we'll be joined by the southern poverty law center, his civil rights organization has been tracking page for 12 years. this time a mosque has burned to the ground, flames broke out early monday morning

at the islamic society of joplin. it follows an arson attempt last month at the same location. that was caught on camera in the july 4th footage, a suspect is seen approaching the mosque and throwing an ignited object onto the roof. coming up at 6:40 this morning here on "early start." we'll hear from kimberly kester. she believes the fire that broke down her mosque was also case of arson. president obama's campaign visit to connecticut creating quite a commotion in the air. let's look at that amateur video of two f-15 fighter jets intercepting a small plane. that plane straight into the president's air space over long island last night. the pilot was escorted to the ground and it had to be a harrowing few minutes, half our later another plane was intercepted near new haven. that plane was allowed to continue on its investigation. that secret service is

after the second fire of the summer. >> you've seen inside their home. new research takes us inside the minds of hoarders. why can't they just throw it away? welcome back to "early start," i'm zoraida sambolin. >> i'm john berman. this morning we're learning more about the police say killed six worshippers at the sikh temple on sunday. his name was wade michael page. he was demoted for drinking from the army and not allowed to reenlist before being discharged in 1998. for several years after that he fronted a white supremacist punk band called end apathy. these are pictures you are looking at that the band had posted on myspace, thought page's rhetoric was just talk, he said he knew this was coming. >> i can't say i wouldn't have seen this coming because

honestly, a couple of weeks ago, i was thinking of him and just to see how he's been doing over the years. and when i couldn't find any contact information, i did start looking for news articles, you know, that something like this might have happened somewhere. >> mark is the senior fellow for a non-profit group that studies hate crimes and extremist groups. we got work they were tracking wade michael page since 2000. we hear you've been tracking him since 2000. what does that mean? what did you see and did you have contact with authorities? >> well, it means that among many other hundreds and hundreds of individuals and organizations, you know, we followed page, really we noticed him as he began to get into the white power music scene, which

you mentioned. he started to join some very well known bands, bands like intimidation one, blue eyed devils and played with them as a vocalist and lead guitarist at various moments. i don't want to suggest that we had picked him out in some way. we were unable as anyone else to suggest this was the man who was going to go on a rampage like this. so no, we did not approach authorities. i don't think there was anything in what we saw that really differentiated him much from thousands of other individuals in the white supremacist world who engaged in this music and talked this talk and so on. i think the biggest real hint was the name of his band, end apathy, the band he started in 2005. i think that really suggests that he actually talks about it in a particular interview, he gave a couple of years ago, it suggests the idea that he felt the white supremacist scene was

all talk and no action and somebody had to do something and the result is this tragedy. >> let's talk about his band for a moment. it is called end apathy and page gave an interview you spoke of right now and i have a quote. the he said the band in its lyrics liked to talk about how human life had been degraded by being smisive to tyranny and hypocrisy. what does that mean? >> it's coded language. it means he felt -- i can't say precisely. he felt other people in the scene do, we needed to kill the black people, brown people and so on. page was associated in addition to the band with a group called hammer skin nation, he may have been a patched number.

hammer skins are the scariest, most violent skin head group out there. page was in the middle of a scene that really was very violent, hyper political and he was not on the fringes of this scene. he was really in the thick of it. >> mark, we're seeing reports overnight that there is an increase in chatter on some of these websites with people saying, as page did, that it's time for less talk and more action. are you seeing an uptick in chatter on the internet right now and is that a concern? >> well, there's a huge amount of talk about page. you know, for instance, some of the hammer skin groups we see them talking about him as a brother and so on and crazy old wade and that kind of thing. and i'm not sure that we're going to see -- i'm sure actually in a sense a lot of groups have pulled their horns and taken down material from particular web pages and so on. that said, i think in the longer

welcome back, glad you're joining us, i'm john berm an. >> the fbi continues its investigation into a suspicious fire that destroyed a mosque in southern missouri. it was burned to the ground in a second fire to hit the center in a little more than a month. investigators spent the day combing through the wreckage searching for evidence of arson. there were no injuries reported here. kimberly kester is a member and spokesperson for the islamic society and she joins us now from joplin, via skype. thanks so much for being with us this morning. i want to make sure that erybody understands that july 4th was ruled an arson when somebody burned the mosque. this latest one happened on monday. and i know they are still investigating there. you had an opportunity to go and take a look at it. what are police saying about this fire? >> the police are still investigating the fire. they haven't given us any

definitive word on the cause or any suspects. they are still following any kind of leads they have received from the july 4th fire. >> you are a member of this mosque. have you had threats in the past? >> our mosque has been threatened in the past. we had a mailbox destroyed. our sign was burned. the sign has been shot with guns. people sometimes would drive by and yell at us. and our heating and air conditioning unit was stolen and then the july 4th attack. >> does the community think the same perpetrator may be involved this time? >> right now we don't want to jump to any conclusions and don't want to lay blame on anybody. we're putting our trust in the police force and the firefighters and investigators that they will find the person.

>> and have these incidents that you've had in the past with violence, have those been reported to the police and have they been taking action? >> we have reported them to the police and yes, the police force has been very supportive. they always take our complaints or anything we come to them with, they take it very seriously. >> i know this mosque was build in 2007 and serves around 50 families. so it's a really small community of muslims in the town. have you ever faced discrimination living there? >> no, i haven't. i haven't had any problems. i would say that in my opinion, this is a very safe community. we feelerwelcome. i don't kn fri of min fr t mosque whohave ever oou thi th is a hate

crime? >> because we don't know the cause or don't even know if it's arson, we can't say it's a hate crime. it is a tragedy and it's very sad. we're very hurt that it happened. but again, we don't want to pass judgment on it. >> with the sikh temple shooting just happening recently as well, are you fearful at all? >> no, i think that our community is very strong and again, we have such an outpouring of support from joplin, this is a very close-knit community. i think that we -- nobody is going to move away because of this. >> that's some good news. i know we have here there was a $15,000 reward from the fbi and atf and council of american hit islamic organization is offering

a $15,000 reward also. we hope your community continues to feel safe. kimberly kester. thank you for being with us this morning. >> thank you. >> it is 43 minutes after the hour. we have new information about wade michael page's ties to white supremacists. man identified as the gunman in the sikh temple massacre once posted this photo of himself in front of a swastika and has since ben removed. attorneys for jared lee loughner are changing their tactics, they are expected to enter one guilty plea at the hearing later this morning in court if a federal judge finds their client economy to stand trial. loughner had already pled guilty to all charges against him. the attack killed six people, wounded 13 others, including then congresswoman gabrielle

giffords. flood waters continue to rise this morning in the philippines. waist deep water can be found in several sections of manila. a dam began overflowing last night sending more water towards low lying areas. weeks of torrential rains have left at least 50 people dead there. >> a deal just finalized overnight, the san diego padres have been sold. the o'malley group has purchased the padres for a reported $800 million. the mlb must still sign off on the deal but that could happen as soon as thursday. the o'malley group is headed by former dodgers owners, peter o'malley, his father purchased the dodgers back in the 50s and moved them from brooklyn to los angeles. team usa women's soccer team edges canada in extra time. what a match. team usa youngest starter,

welcome back to early start. reality tv has taken us into the homes of hoarders. >> i let everything else go. >> just gradually over the years accumulated so much stuff that it's gotten to a point where you can't stand it anymore. >> and you may wonder how can hoarders live like that? new research gives us a clue. senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen is live in atlanta. science says hoarders are wired a little differently than you and me. is this considered a mental illness? >> it's definitely considered a mental illness. what's new here, maybe it's a slightly different mental illness than what we thought. what this researcher in connecticut did was really interesting. the researcher collected his own

junk mail, that stuff we get and gave it to people with hoarding problems and did mris of their brain when they went through it. they were fine with his junk mail. when they had to go through, however, their own junk mail, what he found was that two areas of brain lit up and these are areas that try to assign importance to things and relevance to things and prioritize things. he thinks what's going on is hoarders have a hard time making a decision. they see a piece of mail, for example, think, should i keep it, what should i do with it? that's why they hoard it. they don't want to hoard it. they end up hoarding it because they can't decide what to do with it. >> many hoarders get upset when someone tries to help them. do the brain scans explain a little bit of that behavior? >> they do help to explain it because you can imagine you're sitting there and trying to decide how important is this piece of mail and then there's this guy telling you, come on, throw it away. just relax about it.

but your brain is telling you, no, this is important, i need to focus on this. that's why sometimes the help isn't so helpful for them. >> are we looking at treatments? >> you know, i think what happens here, is that this -- what they've discovered here will help doctors treat hoarders. because before they would see hoarder as they have ocd, they are obsessive and kpulive, maybe they need help with thought process. so you can do cognitive behavioral therapy to help them through that. realizing the nature of the disease will help therapists counsel sell them. >> at what point do you know you're a hoarder? does it have to get that serious like the video we just saw. how do you know we're on the path to hoarding? >> when i saw this story, i looked at my own table with a pile of mail, oh, no. it's hard to define a hoarder, but one way, does it get in the way of your life. obviously someone living in a
