problem with this co-worker. they exchanged allegations of harassment of some sort. we don't know the exact details. there was a history of the problem with a this particular co-worker that he decided to target this morning in the middle of a very ordinary rush hour time that people were headed to work. >> we heard from the mayor and police commissioner that some people were caught in the cross fire. how are things now? >> reporter: we are starting to get back to normal. if you look over my shoulder here, the people back in this area, this is one of the most crowded areas of midtown manhattan. the people were here throughout. they had blocked off the whole city block. we are finally starting to see traffic head through fifth avenue. those that were wounded had no idea what happened. we've seen coming into cnn witnesses that took video with their phone. you can see that people were just absolutely shocked. we heard from witnesses, some of them didn't know what happened at first. thankfully all of those that

the mounsided slams into the towns. that's the real concern here, flooding. they've had flootding in the past aptds lost lives in the past. worried it can happen again. we know the worst is still to come. >> are you able to get reports o on the radio as to what may be happening in other parts of haiti? >> reporter: well, we've driven across from port-au-prince to where we are. it's only about 31 miles. we pass through a number of towns. in every one of them you get the sense that people are not really that concerned. there have been announcements on the radio. the government has been warning people to take precautions and stock up on food. there were allow speakers being hauled through the streets where they were telling people. still, many folks did not seem concerned and did not seem to be taking it seriously.

not going to fight it anymore. john joins us from new york. is he trying to have it both ways? he says he's innocent of all the charges. if he didn't take the drugs, why not keep fighting? >> you do wonder that. i think this is a cleverly spun tact he's taking where he's not going to pursue this, not go through arbitration. he's not made an admission of guilt either. his tact is, hey, believe what you want to believe. he knows he has a lot of people in his corner. he bowed out without real determination one way or another. >> is he kind of thumbing his nose at -- he has a strong personality and is not the warmest of guys. is he thumbing his nose at the people going after him? >> absolutely.
