exchange. the threat of tropical storm isaac caused republicans to rearrange their convention plans. all of the major events have been pushed back to begin no sooner than tuesday afternoon. the gop will be left with a three-day convention. . >> let's talk about tropical storm isaac. taking aim at south florida as it cuts a path across the caribbean. rob is in the severe weather center. when can we expect isaac to reach florida? >> the southern tip as early as tomorrow. the keys and even in miami as this thing makes its way there. 350 miles from key west with 60 mile an hour winds. it's just now reemerging into the caribbean or the southern atlantic and into the florida straights. the forecast track for this thing brings it towards key west. it looks like tomorrow afternoon

have noplace and no room in today's society. you have seen a strong reaction. that's why you saw the reaction from so many leaders in the republican party saying look, we condemn these words and don't think this is right. we are not going to accept it. we don't want any part of it. that's why he is not here now facing a hurricane athe rest of us are. >> he is still in the race and still could win. >> yeah. what's happening is that more and more people are rejecting this kind of silliness as you described. that's why you have so many people leaving and basically not the republican and democratic party, but the system as a whole. what i think is important is that independence which are the fastest growing group of american voters stay in and assert their voices. it's really the future that is important in terms of changing the political culture. without a change in the culture, we are going to keep going down this road of silliness. >> i am going to get through a number of these.

know it. i think mitt romney should stick to the serious stuff. >> people were saying when people said why would he say something like that? it was uncalled-for. many people saw it as partisan. the reason is he is trying to focus. they are trying to fus on the economy and by bringing this up, this changes the focus and that was a headline from yesterday and this weekend and not the focus on the economy. we are not calling out republicans. i want you to check out this super pac ad. listen. >> when mitt romney and bain closed the plant, i lost my health care and my family lost health care. a short time after that my wife became ill. i don't know how long she was sick and think maybe she didn't say anything because she knew we wouldn't afford the insurance. day she became ill and i took

her up to the jackson county hospital and admitted her and she found the cancer. by then it was stage 4. nothing they could do for her. >> this is basically implying that mitt romney's business practices somehow caused this woman's cancer death. omar, truth or dare or outrageous? >> all of these things are really silly claims. i don't want to get into the details of it because that's feeding into this game of tit for tat. they play with each other to keep the american people divided. that's not the way we should be going forward. whatever the case may be, let's look at the larger issue, the issue of the partisanship and what can be done about that. something that can be done is if president obama can come out strongly in favor of nonpartisan reforms and reconnect the way he did in 2008 and won him. >> stand by and you bring up a good point.

that's a legitimate point. ana, what do you say to that? >> i say to that, it was inaccurate and it played with people's emotions and what you saw in that ad was the influence of super pacs. this was a super pac-made ad and that gives the ability to deny having association. we know in truth that these are super pacs that support a specific candidate. a candidate can condemn an ad. they cannot coordinate, but they can say publicly we don't want that ad playing. i pish president obama had the leadership and character to say that. >> mitt romney did not cause this woman's cancer death f. anyone implies that or says that, it is not true. it's bs. how is this for crazy? an all out civil war, president obama is reelected. that's what one judge said. bs or not? ♪

>> okay. so basically we have a system that thrives on the winner take all. it's not a very democratic system. basically in that kind of a bipartisan system where you try to win it, you do it at all costs. that means throwing around numbers that may or may not be true. in some ways if they repeat the numbers enough, some say the population will believe that. the solution is in terms of going beyond this, breaking up the control that parties have over the political process and increasing the participation of americans. that's why in n some ways independents come in. they are the hope of the future. 42% of americans self-identify as independent. in north carolina where i am, two out of three new registered voters are registered as unaffiliated. the reason is partisanship as broadly recognized as the

problem in america. we have brilliant solutions to things, but they don't get all the way in terms of policy because they are blocked for partisan reasons by special interest, etc. there is a great new book. i wanted to mention, it details the rise of independence. that continues to be related to and a side thing in american politics. it's fundamental now and a growing phenomena in america. >> i heard this a number of times and the whole thing they were doing that came about when i was on vacation and we were all sitting around to dinner and people were saying you know, i am consirveative on this and liberal on this and i feel one way about this and one way about this and i don't identify with democrats or republicans because most of the time it's bickering. what happens? independents and i am being honest, they don't feel that they have the power to make that

it. i spoke with the founder and engineer earlier about this creation. >> it took you a couple of years. is is really cool. how did you come up with it and how long did it take to you do this? >> we have been working on the project since about 2002. about ten years. we had our first flight 2008 and ran into problems right away, but the last ten months we have seen a success. >> what took you so long to do it. it's almost like a flying bicycle. >> almost exactly like that. the difficulty came in the control. they started these things in the 60s. they gave up on them. we ran into the same problems that day around 2010. mostly through persistence, we worked through the issues to come up with what you see today. it really is just a control just like a bike. the pilot is not in a control.

the vehicle reacts to the pilot. >> it's intuitive. before we get to that, you ran into the same issues that they did starting in the 60s. that was stability or instability. >> pay went to an artificial stability system that added complexity. for us that would have been out of the question. if we had to go that route, we would have developed the project. we worked around it by getting simpler and simpler. we were able to solve the problem by getting the pilot in the league. >> one would think it's computerized and fans or whatever. it is intuitive, but it works depending on the motion or it knows where to go? >> there is not a computer on the system. all it is is the vehicle itself, the interface is such that is tracks the pilot's movements.

the vehicle reacts by following the pilots and moves it left. it gives the sensation that his leaning create the left bank. the nose goes down and the vehicle goes forward. the pilot leans back and nose up. >> when you did your deft, you did another run. in the desert in california, it's a video we have been showing. tell us what's going on in this video. how does it t work. sometimes you get higher and sometimes lower. is it the fans underneath? what makes it do that? >> great question. there is two fans. one this front of the other like on a motorcycle. the wheels are turned horizontal. what is happening is when a pilot gives throttle, that will give you altitude. we fly at about five feet off the ground and we haven't gone faster than 30. as you need to change the thrust by moving the nose up or down or

the rolling left or right, just to turn, it's similar to a bike. >> do you think there is a market and we will be using these fairly soon? >> i can't imagine a future where the vehicles are not prevalent. they will come up with an unmanned vehicle and the same as you see there, but unmanned for agriculture. it's a big market that benefits from ariel application. we move it back into the manned one and you see it come on the market first for border patrol where you have a lot of borders that don't have roads. >> i wonder if you regulate it. >> as long as we stay here on ground, for this type of vehicle about this size is about 15 feet. as long as you are under that, the faa doesn't consider you an aircraft. >> only at 30 miles per hour. do you think it would be safe any faster than that?

>> we know it will be. the vehicles in the 60s are able to go 75 miles per hour. >> there is criticism that it's not stable, but that's done. >> that's correct. the stability issue will have to creep up on slowly and find out where we see the gremlins in the flying, but at 30, we are doing fine. we know physically, it can get up to 70. >> say they go on the market. the that you have now, the prototype, how much is it? >> i'm embarrassed to say how much it costs. if we were to count the sum of the parts and we get a good indication. it's an answer, if you look at the flight quality and safe, you couldn't get it to market for under $50,000. if you were to look at the high end and if we were over $100,000, you missed the market and we have to redesign and go back to the drawing board. it can't be that expensive and too cheap.
