it's one of the most vocal and prominent priests in america. he was in an interview with catholic media. he's a 79-year-old friar and author of the catholic cable tv network and you see here in his tribute to 50 years and this is what he told the catholic register about priest who is molest children. people have this picture of a person planning to a psychopath. that's not the case. suppose you have a man having a nervous break down and the youngster comes after him. a lot of youngsters are 14, 16, 18 and is the seducer. the fallout was imminent and they pulled the interview and apologized and posted it in the first place. he suggested he is not in his right and the archdiocese of new

york said what the father said cannot stand unchallenged. the sexual abuse of a minor is fine. whoever commits that deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. you can't help but wonder why he would make these comments in the first place and why they would print them. joining me now is barbara blaine, a sexual abuse survivor and founder of the survivor's network of those abused by priests. i should tell you i have done several stories and i'm a grade admirer of her and they protect lots of children. thanks for joining us. >> thanks for having me. >> me what went through your head when you read the father's comments. >> i was first just shocked. i couldn't believe that i had to check the date. i had to make sure the story was coming to us this week. i feel that it's mean-spirit and

hurtful and it's just like rubbing salt into the wounds of victims. >> this hits very close to home for you. me about your experience when you were a child. >> the priest abused me when i was growing up in toledo, ohio and it started in the summer in the seventh and eighth grade. he led me to believe it was my fault. he used to tell me that i had to go to confession and believe me, as a child, i already felt so guilty because of what he was doing to me. so i think that had a negative impact on the development of my psychy and caused me to develop my sense of self as being an evil and bad person. it took a lot of years of therapy to work through that. to now here we are in 2012, have

this monseigneur or priest make these kinds of statements, it's really, really nasty. >> i want to read to you the aftermath statement. he said i apologize for my comments and i did not intent to blame the victim or anyone who abuses a minor is wrong and always responsible. my mind and way of expressing myself are not as clear. i spent my trying to help others the best i could. i deeply regret any harm i caused to anyone. what's your response to that? >> i am glad he is making that statement, but let's put it in context. his initial statements i think are his true feelings. yes, the father seems to have a lot of compassion for other human beings and it seems he has a lot of compassion for predators and the discussion

came in the context of him discussing the priests living at the moan stare where he works. he had more contact with them and he suggested in the interview that a priest or someone who commits these acts the first time, they should not go to jail because somehow they didn't have a criminal intent. he doesn't seem to have any sense of ecmpathy or compassion for victims and i believe it's dangerous and i believe my question is whether or not he is still holding his position as a catholic theologian and commentator. he has a regular sunday night show on the ewtn catholic network. someone who made these remarks from my perspective should be removed from that post. >> for remains to be seen what

>> the conversation continues as we try to understand shocking comments made by a long time catholic friar. the father seen here in a video tribute to his 50 years in the priesthood is apologizing for suggesting that young victims of pedophile priests may have asked for it. he is not just a priest and figure, but a ph.d. in psychology. until recently taught counseling to seminarians. for decades he counseled troubled priests and joining me now from miami. an organization that focuses on youth and mental health. first of all, thanks for joining

us. what was your initial reaction to hearing that? >> they don't surprise me. it doesn't shock me that type of victim blaming. it happening throughout our society when we look at rape cases and people ask what was she wearing or where was she hanging out? when it comes to sexual abuse cases, but the perpetrators and barbara hit on this where she began to believe it was her fault that she experienced the sexual abuse and it was unfortunate that they perm nate our society and it's wonderful that the story is making headlines. we can correct the misconceptions. let me read another quote from the father's interview. it's not so hard to see a kid looking for a father and didn't have his own. they won't be planning to get into heavy duty sex, but romantic embracing, kissing and perhaps sleeping, but not having intercourse or anything like that. help us understand the difference between how an adult

like that and a child interpret a close relationship. >> we are not talking about a close relationship where a child is looking to an adult as a role model and a coach or a mentor. these types of issues whether sexual abuse is present, the boundaries have been crossed. that type of affection is inappropriate and what we know is that the perpetrators target the victims and groom them so that forms appropriate touch like a hug or a pat on the back ends up crossing the line to less and less appropriate touches and sexual behaviors end up occurring that are highly inappropriate and illegal. because the perpetrators through threats and that manipulation that goes in where the child feels powerless. it would be bribery and forms of coercion. that child's voice is stripped from them and many victims of

sexual abuse never speak up. >> the national catholic register mentions jerry sandusky, the former penn state coordinator found guilty of abusing ten boys in 15 years. here's this poor guy, jerry sandusky who went on for years. why didn't anyone say anything? a number of kids knew about it and it didn't break the ice. people did not register in their minds it was a crime. this is what he was saying. he's an older man, but it was printed in the prejster and that's another issue. what do you make of that. some argue he is too old and that's what happens. he acts older than his age. you can be young and what he is implying is that he is acting old. it was printed. what do you make of it? >> it's unacceptable. apologies are too little too late. this should have neve occurred.

it's clear cut where the fault lies. it's 100% on the perpetrator and to make excuses is unacceptable. these cases are not like that. it's pretty much if anyone deserves our compassion and understanding and support, it's not sandusky, but the victims of abuse. one out of three gifrls and one out of boys experiencea, bus. >> what's important to point out is this is not by himself making the viewpoints. i covered so many of the stories over the years and i hear it from victims over the perpetrators. this father said because those committing sexual acts didn't intend to commit a crime, they should go to jail. how can they believe sex with a child would not be a crime? >> any normal person should believe it's a crime. even perpetrators believe that. how else would they decide to

doddling and loggy gagging and postponing. you can be a procrastinator and be a good person too. >> procrastination gets a bad rap and a lot of people say if you are a procrastinator, you are unproductionive and responsible for the gross national product going bad and cutting down on your and tend towards alcoholism. bologna. not only does the national media tell us that, but we tell ourselves that. the fact is that occurred to me, i don't procrastinate and i get a lot done. >> one of the nation's great universities, clearly you got a lot done. >> i got so much done, they retired me. >> sorry that true? >> now i teach a little bit of the university of california riverside, but i hang around stanford. >> some of the things you say are great.

not doing one thing is a way of doing something else. the idea that you get other tasks done while avoiding the you need to be doing. lots of them disappear and it encourages productive subconscious thought and the ronger we take to tackle, the most creative you become about how to tackle it. we asked around and no one seems to deny they know how to procrastinate. listen. >> procrastination is the result of ordering around so if you are always feeling like you are being told what to do, procrastination is a subconscious reaction to that. >> i have 50 years worth of pictures that i am going to scrapbook some day. >> we all have a lazy streak and what we put off until tomorrow, why don't we? unless his important. >> it's 5:00 in the morning and

i wait until 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. so i can do it. pretty much nothing for an hour. coffee, second coffee and i have to take a shower and another 30 minutes. like that. >> my children's homework. i should probably have been helping them do it. sometimes i'm lazy and i just want to sit and watch tv. at the end of the night we are cramming to do it. >> it's the theft of time. >> it makes me sick. >> makes her sick? what is your favorite procrastination pastime? >> at first i think those people are diverse. you have to distinguish between procrastinating and being lazy. lots prove craft nators are not lazy at all. they do all sorts of things as a way of not doing others. that is structured and the book is for structured procrastinators and they suggest don't feel so bad.

fired from her job and she said it's because she is black. nicole said she worked at the trendy clothing store wet seal. she was fired from the store at the king of prussia mall in pennsylvania because she did not fit an image. she joins me live from philadelphia. also with us on the phone, brad sel seligman, her lead council for the class action lawsuit against wet seal. i thank you both for being here. you said you did so well with one wet seal store. you were promoted to the king of prussia mall. if that's the case, why do you think you were fired? >> basically i did very well and i was promoted. the vice president of the company came in and stated that is the store manager? she wanted someone with blond hair and blue eyes. basically nothing was wrong with

my store. i did well with customer service and had a very excellent team and later i saw an e-mail that stated that african-americans dominate and it was a huge issue and under my name i was not the right fit for the store. i was -- >> let me tell the viewers that that is the development in the case. it's not just your word, there was an mail written by a vice president that was forwarded to nicole and we will show you. need diversity. african-american dominate. huge issue. my question for brad the attorney, is this a smoking gun or a company looking to diversify? >> it's an astonishing e-mail to come from a major corporation. i just got yesterday the formal answer in the case in which they admitted this e-mail was written by a senior vice president. the context is important.

the senior vice president and the vice president and the stores had been doing store business. the message was given around the country. they make sure there were not too many blacks on the floor. they were concerned about the image and the image they wanted to project was more appealing to whites. >> what does wet seal say about this and issued the statement and it goes like this. it is for equal opportunity employment and we are proud of our workforce including employees. we do not discriminate on race or any other category. we are confident to see that african americans are well-represented and valued members of our base including our management. you clearly feel differently. you are asking for a judge to consider this a class action lawsuit with hundreds of current

and former black managers at wet seal. why do you feel this issue is much bigger than your case? >> this issue is much bigger than my case because it's not just me. it's miriam st. helder and many african-americans across the country that work for this company and basically you know we just didn't fit the brand image. if you look at the e-mail, you will see other problems and other stores. however with my particular store which was the king of prussia store, the only problem was that i didn't fit the brand image. our sales increased and i had an excellent team and that very same e-mail, you will see that the fixture package looked fantastic. employees had to ensure that the fixture package looked fantastic and if you look at the same e-mail, you will see that the

. let's talk a little politics and how we divide ourselves when we head into the voting booth. we saw a running convention and they show a lot of women and minority speakers even if the delegates were heavily white and mostly male. let's bring in an associate professor at the university of north carolina greensboro and the director of independent voting.org. anna navarro is a contributor and republican strategist and she is tired after the republican convention. she told me. we are glad she is here. thanks for joining us. the republicans know america is changing and the growing number of younger nonwhite groups spoke heavily for barack obama four years ago and older mostly white voters won't be around forever. not such a high percentage of them. can the gop and mitt romney track more minority voters?

>> they have to try. they have to try because the demographic changes are such that if we don't try and mick inroads, we will be the minority party and not get back in the white house. i have seen a lot of effort this week and i was proud of the hispanic speakers. i want to tell you, they are not talking hispanics. they are leaders in elected office and they did a terrific job. i came back to miami and everyone has spoken to me today about how proud they feel and how wonderful marco rubio's speech was. i was in the hall and the governor of new mexico was also terrific. a break out star in my view. >> is it realistic to put a lot of time and money and effort into a tracking minority voters running against the first black president? >> first of l, i'm an independent so i'm not a republican strategist like ana and i don't want to give

republicans a council, per se. what is missaying larger transformation under way and a culture change is what people want. a post partisan america is what people are asking for. the majority of people don't want to be part of the democrat ek or republican party. 51% of latinos are independent and 31% of african-americans between 18 and 29 are independent as well. in some ways talking about the republicans and democrat who is and who should do what to win is missing out on a transformation that we are in the process of right now. >> obviously mitt romney needs a big slice of minority support to win the election. how big of a slice do you think he needs? >> i don't think we should focus on the national polls like a lot of people do. we need to focus on the swing states and the minority vote

there. he needs to do better than did. i don't think he needs to get in the high 30s or up to the 40s. it matters in places like florida. it marries in arizona and new mexico and like nevada. he has to be laser-focused on those swing states and the hispanic vote there. the other key question is turn out. will obama have the same turn out he had four years ago. he may have the margin and he will have a wide margin. i hope mitt romney will work on making a dent on the margins, but the question is, will he have the key second part of the winning formula? the turn out? i suspect his turn out will not be as good. >> republican independent white voters, if there is a strong turn out in the swing states, can mitt romney win with that? >> let me go back to 2008.

how president obama was elected was through a coalition of black and independent voters. that's a very important story that has been pushed aside. the voter right now is looking to align itself with a new coalition, a new partnership in america. a new progressivism is under way which is pulling together african-americans, latino voters and independents. that is challenging the party fundamentally and? n some ways expressive that the republican party because of the inattention to minority voters. the plurality of voters are independents. 42% said they don't want to be part of any political party. that's an important thing to be attentive to. it's going to continue. you hearing that, independents? you have to go out and vote. you could put somebody in the white house. thank you very much for joining us. >> thank you. >> coming up next, hunting

they are interested in in the upcoming election. >> remember the case being ambushed by two college students in 2010. watch. >> you fully support the obama agenda? >> who are you? who are you? >> he later apologized and said there was no excuse for his behaviors. what's the difference between hunting and tracking someone down and looking for the sound byte of the day? >> i think that interestingly enough in this market place of inside, the barrier of becoming a citizen journalist is almost nothing. everyone is walking around with a smart phone that records video. all you have to do in order to get the important click that can change the election is show up at an event with your smart phone and wait for somebody to say what they think. >> some people would call you a gotcha machine. what do you say to that?

>> i'm pretty sure you called me a one-woman torpedo effort two years ago which i am not even making those up. one of my girlfriends had that printed on a t-shirt for me after you aired that piece. it was hysterical and one of the best compliments i have gotten. ultimately what we are seeing is the mainstream media whether it's print or television is changing. they rely more and more on bloggers and citizen journalists to come in with their cameras and smart phones and provide a lot of that content for them. that's largely what i do is take video at town halls and rallies and all kinds of events. waiting for people to really reveal themselves, hence the name of the website. >> the one-woman torpedo machine. thank you, kelly. thanks for talking to me.

. republicans were trying to win over voters during the convention, but a big chunk of americans were watching something else on tv. they were tuned into the hit reality show here comes honey boo-boo. boo-boo bear, this is a different boo-boo. the key demographic of to 49-year-old adults, the show bested each network carrying the gop convention. here say brief clip. >> i'm alana, i'm 6 and i'm a beauty queen. i want to win the biggest trophy with a lot of money! >> okay. the parents put the kids in the show. that's another issue.

joining us to talk about that and more is ben gleeb in charlotte, at the site of the cnn convention. anna navarro is in miami. how does the reality show about red necks trump a convention. >> i was shocked. i honestly thought they would have gotten equal ratings because they are similar programs. both are about entitled white people who use catch phrases that make no sense. they exploit the poor. i feel like it should have been equal. >> that's why we have ana on. i assume your viewpoint is a little different as to why so many people were watching honey boo-boo and not the gop convention. >> i had never seen honey boo-boo child and i saw her tonight coming over here. i think she is hypnotizing in a horrifying way. maybe mitt romney needs to drink
