resembling the prophet muhammad. such a move is considered offensive in the islamic world. and police are now on alert outside the magazine's offices. security precautions are in paris and beyond. deadly protests swept across much of the middle east the french government is scrambling, shutting down diplomatic offices and schools in 20 countries around the world. the u.s. is taking a wait and see approach. same magazine was firebombed less than a year ago, just as it was set to publish a cover that seemed to make fun of islamic law. we'll keep you posted. mitt romney, both on the defensive and on the attack. first, damage control even as some fellow republicans blasted his secretly recorded comments, romney embraced them. he went on fox news to defend his claim that 47% of americans are in the bag for obama because they rely on government handouts. >> i recognize that those people who are not paying income tax

are going to say, gosh, this provision that mitt keeps talking about, lowering income taxes, that's not going to be real attractive to them. and those that are dependent upon government and those who think government's job is to redistribute, i'm not going to get them. >> jim acosta spent the day with the romney campaign. he joins us by phone from dallas. hello, jim. romney is now turning the tables, forcing the obama campaign to explain a 1998 videotape. tell us about that. >> reporter: that's right, carol. what we're hearing right now from the romney campaign is that what they're doing is not running from what he said in those tapes that were released by mother jones. he's really embracing that message. you heard some of this yesterday in the speech that he gave at this fund-raiser in dallas, going after the president on this newly leaked audio that showed up on the report yesterday in which the president talks about redistribution of wealth. let's first play that audio that

appears and then with that we'll show you what mitt romney had to say about that last night at a fund-raiser. >> i think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and, hence, facilitate some redistribution. because i actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level, to make sure that everybody's got a shot. >> this idea that the president has of redistributing, i know there are some people in our country who want to have a government take from some to give to the others. they would like to be the others that are on the receiving end of that. and feel that a redistribution model makes sense. the president, some years ago, said he favors redistribution. i don't. i believe, instead, the role of government is to help those who need help. >> reporter: so, mitt romney continuing with this theme today. he has a new op-ed in "usa today", the headline of that is that he's going to deliver a

recovery, he says, in this op-ed, not dependency. he is sort of running with what he said in those mother jones videos, not really running away from it. and, carol, the romney campaign also put out a memo from its campaign manager, matt rhodes, talking about the two different visions they're laying out for voters this fall and their vision, they say, is not a government-centered society, as they describe in that memo, carol. >> jim acosta, reporting live from dallas this morning. romney's running mate, paul ryan, said obama had to explain some comments he made while running in 2008. obama reacted to those comments last night on the late show with david letterman. >> i immediately said i regret this, because i think it sent the wrong message to the country. so people understand, i think, that you're going to make

mistakes on the campaign trail. what i think people want to make sure of, though, is that you're not writing off a big chunk of the country because the way our democracy works -- this is a big country. and ople disagree a lot. >> president obama says romney's comments are, quote, writing off a big chunk of the country, adding that if you want to be president, you have to work for everyone. >> today, we could finally learn more about fast and furious. the controversial gun traffic ing investigation that is connected to the death of a border patrol agent. hundreds of firearms disappeared and the guns were used to commit crimes in mexico and in the united states. two of the weapons were found back in 2010 at the site of a

gun fight in arizona where brian terry, that u.s. border patrol agent, was killed. crime and justice correspondent joe johns joins me now. joe, this report is due out later today from the justice department? >> that's true, carol. we're expecting it some time this afternoon. inspector general michael ho horowitz is relatively new to the job. this is his first major report. such a contentious issue and political hot potato. there are a lot of questions you would want to have answered here. whose idea was the fast and furious strategy in the first place? who in the government would say that's okay? how high up did it go? who knew about this thing, and for how long? and why didn't somebody stop it? we'll be watching it closely to see if this report has any definitive answers. this is a story that is badly in need of an honest and impartial broker. the fast and furious story reached its peak in a political atmosphere during a political year. and inspector general's report

is always supposed to be about accountability, waste, fraud and abuse. if nothing else, facts. because they may have had information not provided to the other entities investigating fast and furious. carol? >> attorney general eric holder was found in contempt of congress because of this investigation. will this report end that investigation? >> no. that is a completely separate track. it's in the courts and a civil suit has been filed that, of course, will play out on its own. one of the key questions there is executive privilege and how much the administration can keep away from congress and its investigation. in all likelihood, they've tried to work out a negotiated solution because it's the kind of thing that could go on and on and on. >> joe johns reporting live from washington for us. about 350,000 chicago-area kids will go back to school today after teachers voted last

night to end their strike and to get classes started again. about 800 delegates for the teachers union. for just two hours before they decided to suspend the strike that's lasted for a full week. chicago mayor rahm emanual calls the contract, quote, an honest compromise. but what really went into that deal? kyung lah joins us from chicago. so, what are the specifics? >> reporter: well, let's take a look at this deal. three main points we want to highlight here. first of all, there is a pay raise, according to the city of chicago school district, 17.6% raise over four years. there will be more of an impact of standardized testing. 30% of the teacher evaluations will be based on test scores and there will be more time in the classroom, both at the elementary school level and at the high school level. what we're seeing here this morning at this particular elementary school is that the lights are on in the school. teachers are there. it does look like it will be a normal day after this seven-day

strike. teacher teachers overwhelmingly say this isn't a perfect deal, but it's a deal. they're glad to be back in the classroom. here is what one teacher told us. >> everybody is happy to go back to work, get with the kids. it's been long enough. we accomplished what we wanted to. >> reporter: and the school bell, carol, rings in about 45 minutes. >> so who got the better end of the stick? >> reporter: it's really hard to tell. both sides had to give a little bit. xrms on both parts. both sides are saying compromise. no clear winner in this deal. >> kyung lah, reporting live from chicago this morning. dozens of protesters attack a u.s. ambassador's car while he is inside of it. the car is damaged. the ambassador is not hurt. president obama: i'm barack obama and i approve...

comment comments where he talked about redistributing the wealth. and on the flip side, governor romney is talking about -- >> one second before we get to the redistribution thing, and we will get to that, i just wanted to talk about -- >> okay. >> -- what mr. romney really meant. he wants americans to take responsibility. those who aren't paying income taxes aren't taking responsibility. so how does governor romney make them take responsibility? that's what so many voters are wondering. >> i think what governor romney is going to do is put a plan in place that gets america back to work and our economy turned around. he wants to help. right now under the current administration, more people are living on food stamps, more people in poverty, more people unemployed. governor romney wants to put a plan in place that will turn the economy around, allow people to succeed, to get that job, to help become part of -- to get back on track. that's what he wants to do. he wants to help people, lift them up, put them back to work, give them th job, get involved back into the mainstream. he is looking at it, saying this administration is not providing

the tools to put people back to work. he wants to ensure that we have a society where people are out there. we're applauding success and putting people back to work. >> i think another reason that many people were upset by mr. romney's comment at this fund-raiser, these people who aren't paying income tax aren't doing anything wrong. they're taking advantage of the tax code, just like mitt romney takes advantage of our tax laws and pays a rate of about 13%. isn't that now a fair argument to make? >> yeah. but again, i think part of what he's trying to get at is if you don't have an economy that's moving forward, that's allowing job creation, that's encouraging entrepreneurialship, then you're trapping people in a lifestyle of government dependency. what he wants to do is instill policies that create that sort of free enterprise opportunity society where people are out there, applauding success, taking those chances. >> right. >> getting back to work. >> he wants to decrease taxes on the wealthy, right?

he wants to drop their -- keep the bush tax cuts, let's put it that way. >> he wants to do it across the board. no, he wants it across the board deal where it's targeted at middle income. he has made it very clear about that. >> why is he upset with so many americans not paying income taxes? they pay other kinds of taxes. if he wants to -- >> he's not upset at them. carol, i think there's a fundamental misunderstanding. he is not upset at the people. he is upset at the current government that's not giving them the tools to get back on track. that if you are -- he is mad at the administration that is saying, hey, we're not going to foster a free enterprise system that encourages business, that gets government out of the way in terms of regulations. and so if you're not doing that, you're trapping people in government dependency. that's what he's mad at. he's not mad at the people but the system that's trapping them. >> okay. let's talk about redistribution now. the romney campaign is hitting back. they're using this clip of president obama, talking about redistribution. that video is from 1998.

what do you think that obama says in this clip that's upsetting to many republicans? >> well, i don't think it's just republicans. i think it's sort of the whole notion of what we want out of a society here in america, which is we're not looking to punish people that are successful. that's what he gets at. he talks about this idea of we want to redistribute wealth and redistribute services. the idea that if you do well, once you do well, we're going to take it and give it to somebody el else. i think there's no question in america we want to lend a helping hand to those in need. at the same time, we don't want to punish success. we want to encourage it, applaud it. we want that entrepreneurial spirit, the innovation that makes america great to flourish and thrive as opposed to discourage it and punish it, which is what we're currently seeing. >> it's like de ja vu all over again, joe the plumber, john mccain. let's listen to a bite. >> you know senator obama ended

up in the conversation with joe the plumber, we need to spread the wealth around. in order, we're going to take joe the plumber's money and give it to senator obama and he's going to spread the wealth around. >> it sounds awfully familiar and john mccain lost. >> i don't think a lot has changed in terms of that point people in america we were buying into a slogan of hope and change. we've seen it in practice. we had a trillion dollar stimulus that went to campaign donors, companies like solyndra that ended up going bankrupt. companies where it got squandered. i think we've seen what redistribution in practice means. there's a big difference between when you talk about it in practice. and now after four years, we can see the results in it, in terms of more people in poverty, higher unemployment, 43 months of unemployment above 8%.

and deficit over a trillion dollars. >> and that's because of the redistribution of wealth? all of that is because of the redistribution of the wealth from the wealthy to the poor? >> i think it's a general philosophy. the philosophy is that -- >> has it happened? >> how the government is going to solve the problem. we're going to pick winners and -- >> i'm just -- >> sure. i think you have competing philosophies in terms of how you're going to govern and where we want america to head. one is where we pick winners and losers, have the government at the center of deciding how society operates. and one is where we have an opportunity society where we encourage free enterprise system. i think it is a fundamental choice in this election about which vision of america we feel comfortable with. we've seen what those policies the last four years have resulted in. the question is, do we want to continue down that path or look at a guy like mitt romney who has had a successful business record, successful record as governor, turning around the salt lake city olympics and say, hey, we would rather have a record of success than what

represent all of islam. it's the government that insults them. one has to disarm them with humor. >> turns out this isn't the first time the magazine has published cartoons of muhammad. offices were burned in an attack after cartoons were published in 2011. humor to defuse the tensions surrounding that youtube video that incited riots around the world and prompted this "newsweek" cover "muslim rage." they think it perpetuates old stereotypes. dean abadall aah joins me.

>> i'm so outraged. >> you're going to burst at any moment. >> i'm fighting every part of me extinctually. >> some of these tweets are really funny. let's look at the "newsweek" cover and tell me why some muslims in this country are so upset about it. >> well, clearly, it's a bad picture right off the bat. i don't recognize anyone in that picture. i don't like that at all. i'll be honest with you. it's not just "newsweek." there's been sensationalism. it's not that media isn't mentioning the small numbers of people protesting. it's sort of buried. ind nee indonesia, 500 to 700 people protest in a country of over 200 million people. 500 people are getting all the press and that's defining islam in indonesia. lebanon has no protests whatsoever because the pope was visiting and waited until monday to have protests. it's not like there's an

uprising across the middle east. you're talking about 500 in indonesia. who defines islam, the 50,000 who bought tickets to lady gaga or the 500 who are protesting in the streets? >> a picture taken in morocco during a protest. >> no doubt, there are protests. on monday we had the one-year anniversary of occupy movement. there were protests across the country, 1,000 people in new york, almost 200 arrested. would it be fair to define america by those protests across the country if that's the way we were defined in the arab world? of course not. those are limited little glimpses into who we are. same thing in the middle east. people are going about their daily business in the middle east, muslim world. their businesses are open. it's not anarchy. i just wish the media would look at it a little more closely and say this is a small amount of protesters, some with a political agenda and some are

mad. >> "newsweek" tried to do that. they asked for tweets using the #muslimrage. and people used the hash tag to make fun, say iing anything cou send muslims into rage. >> i'm having such a good hair day. >> i don't feel any rage. does that mean i'm not muslim? when you realize the person on tv who is a muslim expert is neither muslim or an expert. #muslimrage. >> that's great. that that'ss that'ssatire at its best. it's sensationalism of the cover and media reports saying muslims are enraged. there's over a billion muslims in the world. out of all the protests, 10,

20,000 people, 98.9% were not protesting. there's no companion story. muslim rage in these limited numbers, and the rest of the muslims going on, going to work, raising their families. >> this is deeper than that. with humor, we can combat extremists. really? >> i think humor is a great way of undermining an opponent. i'm a comedian. i hold up stereotypes about muslims and arabs in my comedy show. try to break them down, raise polit political issues as well. you can inform people. and i think it is a much more effective argument sometimes than a straightforward speech. you're making people laugh. that's so ridiculous, i'm laughing at it. muslim rage, people are saying i can't throw a football around because it's pigskin. muslim rage. have some glow sticks and it's muslim rage. it's funny. it's humor. it makes fun of the whole premise that all muslims are mad.

we're not. we're laughing at the ridiculous press. it's a hard story, believe me. it's a challenging story when the protesters are out there. the media has to cover it. there are protests. it's just a little more responsibility. i hate to use that term but a little bit more from the media would be great on this. >> dean, thank you for being with us. >> thank you, carol. >> come back soon. >> i hope so. >> surveillance video released this week shows jennifer aniston pregnant with triplets. oh, my. we'll explain.

that 747. it's definitely kind of a victory tour of sorts, lifting off from the kennedy space ceer. about 7:20 am this morning, heading cross country. it flew over the space center in mississippi first. as you mentioned. then it went over the louisiana area, new orlea. assembly plant where they built the giant external tanks for the shuttle. and from here, it's on to houston. it will fly over the houston area in just a little while. probably about an hour from now, making several passes, flies over hughouston. and then ultimately landing at the ell ichington field near th johnson space center so folks there can get a look at "endeavour" before it takes off tomorrow morning. tomorrow morning it heads out, continues the victory tour. refueling stop in el paso at biggs army air field. then it flies over the white sands missile range. white sands, as we all know, is

constructs that worked very well for the republicans in the '70s and '80s, but largely receded since the presidency of bill clinton. >> but didn't john mccain use that very argument? >> well, i don't think as clearly. look. what mitt romney said in the video is a mar harshly stated version of the argument that is increasingly pop ular among the conservatives for years and more directly implicit in a lot of the romney argue mentation over the summer. paul ryan for years has said explicitly that he believes that the country is reaching a tipping point where you have a majority of the country that is either receiving government benefits and not playing taxes and romney conjoined the two, because you have more takers than makers and that is what they have put on the air in stum mer. the medicare ad makes that case that obama is taking the money

away from the seniors to give to those who are not for you sh, a that is the welfare ad. part of why romney is embracing this, is that it is a construct that the republicans want to drive and in effect that the democrats are taking from the productive class to give to those who don't deserve it is their attempt to the argument that romney favors the rich. >> well, i talked to john spicer from the rnc, andasked if it was the same about john mccain talking about the redistribution of wealth, and he said that everything bad in the economy is because we have seen that. is that true? >> well, the fact is that we have had enormous difficulty in the economy for over a decade. ten years to the day aer the bush tax cuts were passed fewer people working on the day they were passed which is something true only previously from 1929 to 1939, the median income was lower aed the median poverty was higher. and we have gone through a difficult decade which has changed the economic landscape

here and one of the question of are you better off than you were four years ago is less resonant in the '80s, because fewer people can remember getting ahead which for more americans was more than a decade ago. so they are skeptical that either party has a answer for the longer term distress, but one thing that is striking in the swing state polling out today is that president obama has erased mitt romney's lead for who is better for the economy overall, and president obama consistently leads when he says who cares more about people like you. and does obama favor the poor or romney with the rich, and right now the polls say that obama is winning the argument. >> thank you, rob brownstein. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> how does a video like this at mitt romney get leaked to the media? brian todd knows. >> reporter: how did a videotape made four months ago become so potentially damaging now?

is thematically and not canno c cannonicley. and matthew and mark and luke and john made it in, but many christians were divided what counted and should make it in, but what didn't make it in. she is guessing that this is from another gospel that did not make it in, and right now for academic reasons they are calling it the gospel according to jesus' wife. that is for academic reference. >>k okay. let's just say that this proves that jesus was married. >> take the bait. >> take the bait. okay. what implications for people around the world? >> well, there is a huge debate of early christians over the importance of marriage, and some apostles who followed jesus closest to him who were married, including peter.

coming in well above the exctations, because the economists had been expecting a 2% gain. and another good thing about this report when you look at it is that the sales are not happening in the pockets of the united states, but you are seeing a rise of the sales in every region of the united states, and the sales moved at fastest pace in two years. this is a keenum by number, and existing sales, because they account fort 90% of all housing acti activity and wall street watches this number, as well. and it is not just sales, but the prices went up, too. and the median sales price rose to $190,000, and that means that we have now found a bottom and you are now seeing a recovery happ happening in the housing sector. prices are rising and the national association of realtors says that we are seeing more normal transactions and the fewer distressed sales and meaning short sales and foreclosures and today's reading speaks to all of the pent up

information that we haven't heard we hope that it is our understanding that the aig may have had access to documents an information not provided to other sbe di tis who investigated this situation. >> oh, you mean like congress? >> especially congress, absolutely. >> okay. so could more people be punished because of this program? >> well, i think that you have to say that a few of the key players involved in fast and furious from the atf have already resiped resigned or a people reassigned and i spoke to one of the atf, whistle-blowerers larry alt who said that the agency has made strides since the death of brian terry, though there is more work to be done, and again and again the question asked how high up in the justice department it went, and if it did go high up, what is going to happen to the people involved presumably, you know v tow ask questions about the attorney general, and

lindsay's camp for comment, but this is the latest of the long brushes of the law with lindsay lohan who has been trying to put the legal problems behind her and resume the acting career. but she has been convicted for driving under the influence in 1987 and convicted for shoplifting and sent to probation for that and sentenced several times for not appearing in probation, and then she was praised in march for making all of her probation cases, and then she was released to a unsupervised status, by it is too early to determine if her arrest in new york could affect the legal issues here in california. we will see. >> let e's pivot and talk about barbra streisand. >> yeah, let's talk about babs. it is incredible. >> she is officially the highest touring act of all time

around for 40 minutes and sounded like a fighter jet. residents of the eastern u.s. are cleaning up today after being pounded by heavy storms. as much as eight inches of rain came down with flash flooding in streets and neighborhoods and high winds a problem knocking down trees and cutting power to 30,000 people. rob marciano is in the weather center. is it over? >> yeah, it is for the most part. you mentioned that fire tornado and we thought that we would see tornado yesterday with tornado watches up and down the east coast and there were none, so that is good news. but plenty of wind, carol, and as you mentioned some of the wind had damage at reagan international and some gusts outside of jfk with 50 miles per hour. here is what it looked like in places of maryland and around the delmarva, they got hammered with the winds and at one point 30,000 people without power throughout virginia and maryland and the d.c. area. up across connecticut problems with not only the flooding from the rainfall, but also some coastal flooding, because of strong winds out ahead of the

main system. that slowdown looks like the mta there. as far as the rainfall is concerned, that is the other issue with this, and this is a big rainmaker from the tennessee valley up to the appalachian and up through parts of upstate new york and we didn't see much in the way of severe thunderstorms that had gusty winds, but a lot of the winds were out ahead of the system, and that created some of the problems. but now the system is offshore and the front is down across parts of florida and that is it. and we are getting into the colder system for shoe, and temperatures dropping 20 degrees cooler than where they were yesterday, and that depends a frosty temperature on tap, and not so bad today, and we have colder air coming behind the system which may, may have a few snowflakes fly over the western great lake, and some frost over the pumpkins in upstate new york and across northern new england, but a lot of the dangerous weather from yesterday is gone. carol? >> thank you, rob. there are new safety concerns

and people think tuna that is healthy and i know kids who will eat nothing but tuna. >> and you rejoice at that. >> yes, because it is better than other thing they could be eat, but we have known for a while that tuna has a lot of mercury and especially the cal ba core tuna. what this group did, the mercury policy project went out and bought a bunch of tuna and found out that it had more mercury in it than what the government has found when they have done to do their sampling, so they say more mercury in tuna than we thought. how does mercury get into tuna? >> i hope they are not eating thermometers or anything like that. but what it is that there is mercury in the pollution in the air, and that air is going over to water and falls into the wear the and the fish live there. that is what happens. and the tuna are predators so they eat other fish and so they have their mercury plus the mercury of those fish. >> how harmful for fish to eat then? how worried should parents be? >> it is difficult to say this
