down local businesses. breaking the sound barrier without a net. that's what felix baumgartner is expected to do today. only cnn will bring it to you live. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com it is sunday, october 14th. good morning, everyone. so glad you're with us. i'm randi kaye. we start this morning with the shuttle "endeavour" final journey. a slow, very slow ride through the streets of los angeles that is still not other. remember, we're used to seeing the shuttle going about 17,000 miles per hour but two miles an hour this weekend may have been too ambitious for "endeavour." john zarrella is hanging out watching the crawl. >> reporter: many people have waited eight, nine hours for the shuttle to arrive, but when it did, it was worth it.

it had the road to itself, a parade of one. in tinseltown where seeing stars ho-hum, "endeavour" made everyone starry-eyed. cameras snapped. people looked on in awe as "endeavour" came into view. this was the first viewing area outside the old former arena where the los angeles lakers once played. and "endeavour" was way ahead at that point but it wouldn't last. outside the second designated viewing area, some people stood and waited for more than eight hours for it to arrive and when it did, it was well after dark. the most difficult part was more difficult than expected. "endeavour" came within inches of trees. so many people lined the streets pressing as close as they could get, so many turns that it was slower than the predicted 2

of space comes after five years of development and even a legal hitch. what's the biggest challenge and why haven't you tried it before? >> you need a lot of research. it's not just you lock yourself in a pressure capsule. you need research, you need to find the right people to work with. >> pressure at 120,000 feet. so hit the dump valve and let's have a ride. >> reporter: among those on his red bull stratus team this man holds the 52-year-old record. he's planning to break the record that the former astronaut broke. baumgartner is no stranger to death-defying jumps. he has base jumped from the world's tallest buildings, set

the record of jumping off christ the redeemer statue and completed the first englis crossing. but free falling from the edge of space is a whole new game. >> you have to keep that position, don't you, because it would be very easy to spin out of control. >> so for the first 30 seconds you cannot use the air. that requires a really stable exit. that's why we practiced a lot of bungee jumps. just to get the right motion into my mind. >> are you not scared in any way. >> well, i am scared because you're going up to 120,000 feet, which is a really hostile environment and no matter how much you have prepared yourself, you have no idea how it turns out until you do it for real. >> well, we wish him luck today. make sure to stay with cnn for more on his record-breaking jump. the launch could begin as soon

as 8:30 eastern time. to politics now. both presidential candidates are off the trail as they get ready for tuesday's second presidential debate. mitt romney gave a preview of what he'd like to talk about on tuesday. >> i'd like to ask why we've gone from 32 million people on food stamps and over the last four years now up to 47 million on food stamps. that's an increase of 15 million people, more than those in ohio. what he wants to talk about instead of food stamps or that half the kids coming out of college can't find work or college-level work, now one out of six americans is living in poverty, what he wants to talk about is how he can save big bird. >> federal spending on food stamps is around 150 times more

than spending on pbs. paul ryan's plan would cut around $33 billion from the program. what you don't know is this. food stamps is at an all-time high with over 46 million people on it. but over the year it has been growing. we have some new numbers this morning on that race. the recommend montana poll shows president obama with a two-point lead over mitt romney. what's interesting in the numbers is only one democrat has won arizona in the past 60 years and that was bill clinton in 1996. both of the vermontal candidates are back in their home states today. paul ryan is in wisconsin and president biden is in delaware. at a fund-raiser yesterday biden talked about the difference between the candidates and he offered this. quote, every presidential race every race comes down twho they thing has character and conviction.

welcome back. debate night is coming up tuesday and here's cnn political editor paul steinhauser. >> hey, good morning, randi. it's the second presidential debate and both candidates are getting ready for tuesday's big showdown. president obama is in virginia but not to campaign in the crucial battleground state. instead mr. obama is undergoing debate preparations. and while mitt romney was stumped in ohio, he also fit in some preps. >> i enjoyed my debate about a week ago. that was a good experience. >> most experience thought romney won the first debate which puts more pressure on the president who told diane sawyer the other night, -- >> i had a bad night.

>> this time questions will not only come from the moderator, who's our own candy crowley, but also people from the town hall audience. it's tradition the presidential candidates attend this high-profile debate. on monday mitt romney powwows with those at the summit and thursday president obama goes on the daily show. springstein went on the campaign trial last time around but said he wouldn't this time. >> as he said our own candy crowley be l be keeping them on track. she's interviewed both of them before. does that change the way she goes into this?

>> it's interesting. i'm not sure having interviewed both of them changes how i would approach either of them. i thing it's more that i've interviewed both of them, i've interviewed presidents, i've interviewed candidates so there's an ease there. actually neither one of them scare me in that sense. it is that we are, of course, having this other element of the town hall and so the mixture of all of that and trying to keep that kind of under control and on target and letting the people's voice from the town hall meeting come through, that's the sort of thing that keeps me awake at night frankly. it's not these two guys. i am hoping that in 25 year --5 years i've covered politics has given me the base for this, however, from the minute i knew i with us going to do this, things have become more embedded in my memory. day to day when you're doing a story, you're sort of reasoning,

>> it was a point blank shot, yeah. >> are you surprised she's even alive today? >> yes, everyone is surprised she's alive today. >> vigils have been taking place across pakistan for the teen. another big rally is set to get under way in pakistanpakistan's city karachi next hour. pakistani sources say an israeli air strike has killed two americans in the northern strip of gaza. they say three other people were wounded including a 10-year-old. the israel defense forces confirmed the strike and said it targeted terror operatives. >> an african king from ghana didn't exactly get a royal welcome from norway. instead he got robbed from a radisson hotel in oslo. police are searching for a man and woman caught on surveillance. they think they may have swiped one of their bags that had priceful crown jewels inside it.

a tragedy. at least 100 people were injured when the fireworks fell into the crowd. many people suffered burns. the incident now under investigation. now to the middle east where tensions are threatening to boil over between syria and turkey. will a full-scale regional war erupt? syrian shells have fallen on the side of the border and now both are yanking their aircraft from the airspace. m mohammed joins us. they were there to try to calm the tensions with syria. what can you tell us about tt? >> reporter: good morning, randi. that's right. they met yesterday in turkey as well as the german foreign

minister. now, he was there to try to calm these boiling tensions that are going on between turkey and syria. in the past week you've seen cross-border shelling between both countries. you've also seen quite a bit of p thl. that happened by turkey just a few days ago as well. now, tensions have been on the increase between turkey and syria these past several months, but they've really got on the a fever pitch the last few days and the concern is will this turn into a wider regional conflict. the concern is nobody wants to see any escalation and the violence and yet it seems to be heading that way. interesting that this happened yesterday, the same day at an international conference in istanbul the turkish prime minister gave comments in which he really slammed the u.n. security council for failing to come up with a cohesive plan of action when it comes to syria saying that the u.n. security council as well as so many other international bodies had watched for months as thousands upon

thousands of people in syria had been killed and nobody had been able to do anything. a lot of people hurt, a lot of tensions ratcheted up. on t same day that the u.n. and arab league convoy was in turkey to try to calm tensions between these two countries. >> you mentioned things are escalating. people in the u.s. are concerned that a bigger conflict could draw the u.s. into this. >> well, that's right. nobody wants to see this happen. but the concern is would the u.s. be drawn in. the u.s., of course, a part of nato. turkey is a part of nato. so if turkey says they're facing a threat from syria and they're urging the nato allies to help them in some sort of war from syria does that drag in the u.s. even though the u.s. doesn't want to be dragged in. we receive u.s. the past several months provide nonlethal assistance ta to the syrians when it comes to equipment and

training but they don't want to further mill i tearize it. they don't want to see the bloodshed continue but they don't want to be involved in the conflict. >> very quickly, what about this new human rights story about syria using cluster bombs. any truth to that? >> it's a very disturbing report. they have evidence that syria, which is one of the few countries in the world that has not banned the use of cluster bombs and have been doing so more cently, especially in the past week. there are a lot of videos showing remnants of cluster bombs in parts of syria, being held up at times by children in these videos. very scary stuff. you have people in these towns either taking them as souvenirs or handling them in front of the camera to show what's going on in syria. they're dropped from eaairplane

and rockets. before they explode, these bomblets spread out and a lot of times they act like land minus. they don't explode on impact so people walking through the fields or taking them, they can explode later on. the human rights report wants to warn the population there that this is going on. >> certainly a big concern. mohammed jamjoom, thank you very much. a military family goes to a football game and gets a big surprise. their dad goes on the jumbo screen thanking them for their support, right? well, that's not all. facebook versus your privacy. some big changes coming for our facebook friends in europe. the social media giant will drop its controversial facial recognition tool for all europeans by tomorrow. here to discuss the changes and tell us what they could mean for those facebook addicts here in the u.s. is nadia bilchik. good morning. all right. so we're talking about this facial recognition tool. i've actually opted out of this but tell us briefly for viewers at home how it works. >> in essence, the minute you've been tagged in a photograph

once, what fatebook technology allows you to do is next time you have a group of photos, if you want to tag this photothe facial recognitiwreck fee -- re feature will give you options. it groups multiple images and looks at four head, eyebrows, temple and ideally allows a face to be recognized but it isn't 100% accurate. the minute it's tilted or lighting is different research shows that it doesn't read. >> but the key point is anyone whose ooh a registered facebook use kerr be added to one of your pictures and they might not be. >> especially if they haven't put their privacy setting to allow that. >> you mention they'd're dropping this feature tomorrow. why? >> basically you have the data protection in europe who says it's an invasion of privacy. tomorrow it will be suspended.

it will be suspended until such time as they have compliance in place. so all 233 million, as you said, eu users will no longer have facial recognition as a feature now. >> i will say to facebook's credit they are do try and protect so they are cooperating. >> they're absolutely cooperateding. in fact, facebook's policy director in europe says they haven't just been compliant but they've actually said they have a reasonable model for good practice and facebook has been very good about urging people's knowledge about privacy. however, one of the things that this commission is saying is that they don't educate users enough. >> so but now as i mentioned, i opted out, which we were all taught how to do. >> how long ago did you opt out? >> probably last year sometimes. >> things change all the time. >> right. tlanld are loopholes. >> exactly. there are loopholes. there's this horrific story out

of houston where two students were part of a choir. they didn't want parents to know and they were basically included in a group of the administrator, so the father of one of the -- >> it was a group photo? >> a group photo that was posted. one of the participant's fathers found out she was lesbian through that post. and in that case, again, google -- facebook terribly apologized saying please be vigilant about your privacy. in this case it was the group administrator who put the group on. you know, i think it goes back to just how vilk lent we have to be all of us. >> so speaking of privacy, though, it's an issue all over europe but it's not just facebook, right? google is having an issue in germany? >> in germany, it was the street map. people complained. they say this is an invasion of

was always prosecuted under the state's new anti-terrorism law created just after the 9/11 attacks. so is morales a home grown terrorist as the prosecutor claims or is the charge unwarranted? that's what the appeal court will consider next month. i ask ed paul callan about it. >> we need a terrorism statute apparently in fear that the feds wouldn't have the manpower to prosecute. the statute says if you use violence to intimidate or coerce a essentiallyian population, that's terrorism. the bronx district attorney said, well, this is a mexican gang and what they do is they kill and they use violence to intimidate local businesspeople

to get money out of them and to put them in fear, so technically the statute applies and that's the argument they med ade in fr of judges but the judges so far have said it's a stretch, it wasn't intended for that purpose. >> a in addition he was sentenc to 40 years to life for weapons and conspiracy. if the charges are dropped how much of a reduction are we talking about here? >> we're talking a huge reducti reduction. this is a shooting that took place at a church after a kritenning. it was terrible shooting. a young girl gets killed. another gang memberer gets paralyzed. he might have less. the terrorism thing can have the effect of almost doubling the sentence where you're charged with manslaughter or attempted murder. it's a very, very serious bump

in sentence if you're found to be a terrorist. >> if you look a@this under the law, wouldn't have that make every gang member a terrorist? >> not only would it make every gang member a terrorist but you could argue maybe every criminal is a terrorist of sorts. if you think about somebody going into the schwab iowa and on a bus and robs people, they're putting civilians in fear and to intimidate and coerce them, it's kind of an example of unintended consequences when legislators do they think is the right thing. wi let's do a terrorism law. unless you're really careful, you're handing the prosecutor a new weapon and they use it against the bad guys and the judges are here to sort it out and say is that what was really intended. and i think in new york they t answer's going to be no, this was not intended for this crime. the new york court of appeals, randi, think, will throw it out and reduce the charges against
