have a plan and go public on it, they will hold you couldable. what are the stories you tell yourself? our brains are racing. we are beating ourselves up because we gained a few pounds over the holidays and we feed the emotion and that causes obesity. >> 7 out of 10 americans are overweight. that's pretty frightening. >> for a lot of reasons. i open people's sternums and see what's going on with that precious organs in our hearts. when it's nothinged and forced to work hard, they are coming around and causes big issues. it has a huge medical impact on us. it halfaravages the health care

system. >> what are the things about the american diet and way of that are particular to america? >> we made it easy to do the wrong thing in america. we subsidize foots that are not good for us. i don't mind having a bun here and there, but with empty calories for the main food fly, our brains are smart. they are looking for nutrients, not calories. if you eat french fries by themselves, they are the single worst food. the average person eating french fries will gain about three poundins a year. a baked potato is fine when the add the sugar and salt and fry them down, our body can't deal with that. you gave me calories, but no nutrients. >> when i came to america, i was struck by two things. one, incredible amount of fast food that you americans guzzle. secondly, the amazing portions

that come with almost every meal. you cannot order breakfast without somebody in a restaurant shoveling on potato or fries without anybody asking for it. you just shovel out the food. >> one of the realities -- >> i mean that in a nice way. >> we got comfortable making those portions part of what we do. this is looked at. you move the place size and we have 11 inch plates. that's a lot more food than a nine or seven-inch plate. >> if everyone exercised the portion control and cut the amount they ate by a third, what effect would it have on the average? >> change your life expectancey and the quality of our and the health care budget which is the big issue for a lot of folks who are paying attention to the crisis in washington. there is no way, i don't care what side of the aisle you are

on, no way to balance budgets without making us less heavy. it drives a third or half of all health expenditures because of the side effects. this is a national security crisis. it's not a battle we are going to win in hospitals. as much as i wish you could heal with steel, we will win the battle in our kitchens and living rooms and bedrooms. that's hard for washington to legislate and something we have to change by making it easier to do the right thing. >> you have been hanging out with the washington all-stars. here's a view with you and the first lady here. >> one of the things we tried to do is be a source of information and education. one of the reasons why i started with kids and i'm focused on childhood obesity is because i know that people will do for their kids what they are not willing or able to do for themselves. >> is it good for america that

you have a first lady and president who are obviously very physically fit themselves? >> a huge benefit. they serve as a model. that was a soulful interview. first they spoke about the fact that she feels that we are mortgages the future of our nation and the health care challenges that our kids will face. for the first time this year, we will see a significant reduction in life expectancy when people never graduated from high school. not only income splits, but life expectancy splits as well. >> how much of that is worsened by a lack of mobility. a word of computer games and television and all of rest. i struck my vacation with my three teenage sons, how it compared to ten years ago. this time they can barely get them off of their computers. not as healthy. >> if it's nice outside, the

kids ought to be outside. you have to disconnect the television set. that's dated. a physical activity for kids is hugely important, but that's not how you lose weight by itself. we are struggling because we don't have sidewalks and made it hard for kids to get activity. put your hands up. how many walked to school when you were kids? all the adults except the kids in the back. the data is 60 percent per of my generation walked to school. today less than 10%. >> if you walk for a half hour a day as an adult. i walked to cnn and i feel like it's a good exercise if you walk at a reasonable pace. is that enough to be fit? >> it's the perfect amount. >> i am a perfect physical specimen. >> i have your lab studies here. don't look at it yet. we will get to these. >> after a two-wing break. these are not going to be good. british beer and the turkey and

the rum. it's going to be ghastly. >> i have seen the tests. you are mr. america in many ways. despite your british accent. physical activity when you look around the world, places where people live a long time, it's not about going to the gym every day and doing a two-hour work out. it's about 30 minutes of activity that gets your heart rate up a little bit. you climb to the top of the hill and pick up a bucket and come back down. walking to work is the smartest thing. you don't have to do a work out at the end of the day. people who have jobs walk the steps or go to somewhere else to have lunch. at home with the kids, park further from the mall. these are simple things you automate into your life. >> a lot of these are about like chris christie may well be a future president of the united states and has a well-documented

problem with his weight. >> the thing i feel most guilty about is my weight. yeah. i'm really struggling for a long time with it and i know it would be better for my kids if i got it more under control. i do feel a sense of guilt at times about that. >> why do you think you had a battle with your weight? >> if i could figure it out, i would fix it. >> you don't know what it is? >> i don't. >> did you get help for it? >> sure. plenty of times. >> where do you fall down? >> i eat too much. that's not a complicated thing. >> i love chris christie and his honesty there. he has amazing energy for a guy who people say is too overweight to be president. he walked through the storms and he's a man of natural energy. >> with his family, mary pat his wonderful wife worked with him

on this. the reality is that there opportunities to lead that come in unique ways. by being overweight he has a chance of losing the weight. that would be a role model for the nation. governor huckabee did that and it changed the minds of a lot of people. here's the man who was competent and darn good at it. he has a lot of wisdom and speaks about so many things that affect so many of us with the emotional under tones and when you ask the key question, you are so good at asking questions that are simple and right to the point. why do you do it? he doesn't know. that in a sentence encapsulates the problem. the reality is there a dozen biologic systems that force us to overeat. in our entire history of a species been a time we wanted to lose weight. we have say crisis. the same realities that cause us to overeat are much more prevalent now. that is stress. think about it.

a stress event 1,000 years ago wasn't a deadline or a paycheck. it might have been marital stress, but probably famine. not having enough food. that is what caused chronic stress. today it comes with keyboards and devices never turn over. access to information. that drives us to stress. when i look around and see big bellies, i see folk who is can't cope with stress. the ability to manage stress is the number one under tone with the loss of health in america. >> the other is this flu epidemic that tends to be an annual thing. it's virulent right now. what's the best thing they can do? >> have the flu shot without question. it's not too late. the flu season looks like it might be the worst in years. the cases we have seen in a long time, the flu shot seems to be a good match for the virus. my own family, we had a lot of

. our guest is dr. oz. i went up to sandy hook before christmas. very emotional trip i know for you. you raise a number of issues and i debated stuff about guns and so on, but also there is a huge issue about stress and trauma. it comes out of these incidents. the world's media tends to move on after a week or so. they have to try to rebuild your lives. what is the best advice if there is any for people who get caught up. >> it comes in different forms and we have difficult times in our lives. i was up there and it was soulful to see wonderful human beings and they all knew the kids singing in the church singing like angels. you can hear the whispers and the entire to help each other. they are there for each other. you look for hope and hope is

not about giving good news. i'm a heart surgeon and i don't always give good news. that's not what hope is about. it's about understanding why it happened. just making sense progresses it quite a bit. they are trying to make sense and we will never completely understand the senseless act, but the aspiration to support each other rebuilds what is important in our lives. that's something that many of us struggle with. we got past the holidays and it's very core. it's about happiness. happiness is about being grateful. unpredictable and bad things sometimes happen. taking the time to figure out and moving on and what we are good at is the species. >> in terms of everyone else who get affected, lots of things in life having a traumatic effect.

either observing a terrible event or being involved, how do you deal with that stress? it's like a death in the family or a close friend or a beloved pet. >> i can't tell you how many times we lost a couple and soon after will lose the spouse. we had to operate on the husband and the wife in the same night. >> does a broken heart exist in medical terms? >> no question that it exists and they kill people. the pump changes and the ability to squeeze at the right rhythm. especially major stress. it comes from so many unpredictable places. you lose your loved one and from divorce too. of the ten major stresses, six are financial. there is not whether you face stress in life, but whether you weather it the right way. especially where every traumatic

effect like the killing of so many children in newtown is reiterated in our mind and becomes part of our psyche. >> how important is physical exercise to stress? whenever i am through a tough time, i am forcing myself to the and you feel a little bit better afterwards. >> no question it's the antidote to stress. we can go outside and begin to rev our engineer. it discharges the hormones that are pent up and store the rage, but they can be done with if you exercise. it doesn't take a lot. stretching out for five or ten machines will do it. the other tip is something used in many parts of the world where there difficult issues. rote yola. that's siberian ginseng. it's a cold place and they have a difficult time. you take the root of the plant

it should be legalized like a cigarette. >> there a couple of problems. it alters how you feel about life. i am suspect of anything that does that. you shouldn't have to alter it to enjoy life. it's a gateway for some who are susceptible to addictions to move on to other products. secondly it's unregulated in most states. kids get them and try them and don't know the impact or the substance and it causes an issue. i believe we should legalize it for medicinal use and ratchet down the illegal use of it. a state like california that freed up the use does disservice to new jersey where i happen to live. it's legal to use cannibis for medicinal purposes, but illegal to buy it. that's a juggling act. i predict we will evolve to the position where medical decisions like the use of cannibis appropriately for people with

i have to say this. a two-week's vacation. in britain, you know how much we drink. >> before i give the results, i will share with everybody that we have been going around the country doing these 15 minute physicals. that's all the time it took to do. the 15 minute physical concept came out of a reality that so many folks were fearful of their numbers. it's true for the thousand of people can change the numbers for the better. i'm not diagnosing cancer or issues. but this is the reality where america lives. everyone who can hear my voice, if you don't know your blood pressure, assume it's high. if you don't know your blood s sugar, assume you have diabetes. >> get on it. >> number one ager of all.

your body mass index is 28 and it's supposed to be around 25. >> how bad is that. >> it's overweight, but i am not worried about that as much as your waist size. you can do this right now. one half your height. you are 6'1". >> what should it be? >> half of 73 inches. 36 1/2 inches. >> that's not that. >> it's not. it's 39 inches. most guys never buy a new belt after the age 40. what do they do? they put the waist down like this. they wander around like this. i got a 32 inch waist, but you have problems going. that's the reality where we live in this country. 39 inches. what does that cost? belly fat does three things. it irritates your liver. when your liver is irritated, it makes the wrong kind of

cholesterol called lousy ldl. your number is 145. >> how bad is that? >> ideally less than 140. not too far. your liver is able to keep up, but the part about the liver -- >> you are punishing it. >> you are. this is the part that concerns me, your healthy cholesterol is in there and powerful and strong and it grabs the cholesterol to protect you. that is supposed to be more than 45 to 50. yours is 37. >> not good. i need that. how doe i get more healthy cholesterol? >> the best way is to get the waist size down to 36 1/2 inches. >> what's the best way to do that. >> there a couple of tips. that's a discussion that is a take away. the next thing was your blood sugar. it has to be less than 100 and yours is 86. high five. >> round of applause.

on the kidneys and the kidneys regulate your blood pressure. when they are being squeezed, they say give me more blood and your body jacks up the blood pressure to get it there. it's like a fire hydrant. it's squirting away the lining of the arteries. as we are sitting here talking, your blood pressure is straining the lines of the arteries. you use cholesterol. you don't have enough of the good and you have more bad. that is putting patches in there. >> the perfect storm of hell. >> the sugar is okay. it's like broken pieces of glass scraping the lining of the arteries. if you have that percolating in your body, it's difficult to live life normally. >> what are do i have to do? none of this surprises me too much. what should i do to deal with this? >> the number one thing that folks should do is automate

their lives so the decisions are easier to make. for example, in the morning when you get up, you need a routine. don't make any decisions about food until the afternoon. your breakfast for example are eggs. even with cholesterol issues, eggs are fine because protein helps you lose weight. you want pro10 within an hour of getting up. it could be yogurt with berries. some protein and nutrients and it sets you up. a mid-morning snack like a handful of nuts. if you don't like it, you will not fay is on it. lunch can be something you can deal with. a salad or salmon. you don't have to think about it. in the afternoon, start making decisions. figure out what you are going to do. the second big tip is teas are great. they are fantastic because they have caffeine that stimulate your metabolism. >> is coffee bad? >> coffee is fine, but most people don't have black coffee. most have black coffee with cream and more cream and

>> i would rather have high blood pressure. a little bit too personal, dr. oz. i am asking to get questions from my studio audience. that's a horrible visual. you have a question. >> hi, dr. oz. i'm 53 and in the throws of menopause so my question is why does it seem some women have it a lot easier and some women have a difficult time? is it diet? is it exercise or is it just luck? >> it's a combination, but if i can explain to everyone what's going on, about a third of women have severe symptoms. about a third are bothered by sleep problems and emotional disruption and hot all the time. about a third don't know they are going through menopause. part is dependent on the body's fat content. you don't have much, but when the body has fat, it creates

more estrogen. that's why it's for men and women to lose their libido, they are converting it to estrogen. women has hot flashes and breast cancer and ovarian cancer and things like that. the second is the emotional reality. menopause is not just estrogen, but progesterone problems. it's like valium to women. that's why when you get pregnant, your progesterone goes through the roof. you don't rebel against this thing growing in you. you tolerate transgressions because you have high levels of progesterone. if you enter into your fourth decade of life, progesterone comes down and slights that didn't bother you now bother you. that combination of physical realities and coping stills leads to menopause. if you go to the healthy fats in

your diet like vegetables and nuts and the like, black go hosh is effective for a lot of women. do not shy away from hormone replacement therapy. i don't think it's a danger for women to take for a short period of time, three to five years. take it with aspirin to reduce clotting problems. that's where the average medical practitioners will agree we ought to use these drugs. >> a question about pain. >> hi, doctor oz. in regards to pain, i have a preexisting shoulder injury and the older i become, the more frequent the pain appears. my question is, is there a preventive measure i can use to alleviate the pain so that long-term it won't turn into arthritis? >> that's a great question. so many americans must suffer from pain in some capacity. long-term pain. what is the best way to deal

with it? >> we tackle this because it's 116 million americans. a lot of us run to pills, but they are not the right solution. that paints over the crack in the foundation of the well being. let's talk about your shoulder. the reality is most of our joints which have two bones involved are not supposed to let the bones touch. when the muscles get weak around the joints, the bones touch. that's true for knee pain because when you have knee pain you hobble. the muscles at fee and when you get better, the bones hit each other. if they were strong, they suck the joint apart. to prevent the bones from touching and causing discomfort. the second is the amount of discomfort in the body. fish oils are hugely effective in reducing pain and there over the counter products and magnets and electricity symptom devices. they are fda approve and

inexpensive and put them on your shoulder and knee and back and whatever is hurting you. they are impactful and would try them. they are not expensive and much safer than taking pills. >> good advice. we have a question that is right up my alley which salon jeffity. >> i am 61 and come from a long line of short-lived people. following all the rules and regulations you painted, i sometimes feel that genetics play a huge role. what's the balance between genetics and good living. >> about 2/3 of how long you live is based on lifestyle and only a third is genetics. many other conditions like heart disease is dependent on the risk factors. >> don't go on about it. >> please.

we discussed before, you are 101 years old. what is the secret to long in terms of health? >> good diet. exercise and if you can't do it standing up, get in bed and do it. >> really? >> do what in bed? >> exactly. >> good sex. >> i'm proud of you. >> let me ask you, have you ever smoked? >> never. i never sat in the sun. >> you never smoked and never been in the sun. keep out of the sun. do you drink alcohol? >> milk. >> keep out of the sun, no smoking, very little alcohol and lots of milk and plenty of sex. what about that for a recipe to long? >> it obviously works.

her blood pressure will be on the low side. >> stay off the blood pressure. >> look at places where people live a long time, this story resonates. social structure around the family and make peace with what's going on in your and physical activity. sex counts. that comes up over and over again. that's a barometer of whether you are healthy enough. >> your problem is about sleep. >> i'm 48 and since i got into my late 40s, i have sleep problems. i wake up and i can't get back to sleep. >> a lot of people have it. i have a 1-year-old daughter who wakes up at 3:00 every morning. for people who have that are they naturally broken or other events? how important is sleep? how many hours should you get? if you can't get enough, what do do you? >> the number one underappreciated issue is sleep issues. it drives overeating and high

blood pressure. >> i can blame my 1-year-old daughter. it's your fault. >> that's what it comprehends down to. with sleep issues, you are awaken and comes from a variety of sources. anxiety and as we get older we have to go to the bathroom and you turn the lights on. as soon as your eyes see light, you turn off melatonin in the brain and you are awake. get a night light or use your cell phone. even on the way to the bathroom trip so you don't trip. it will allow to you go back to slip effortlessly. >> we are in an era with blackberries and mobiles and computers and so on. how does that affect people's sleep. it affects mine because you are on these things all day to late at night. it can't help you. >> it disrupts sleep patterns.

our ancestors see the sunset and because the sun's rays would get longer and longer, it would turn on the sleep mechanism. when you are on a hand held device, it keeps you up. that bright light won't let you assimilate. you don't go to sleep. the first thing i tell all my patients is about a hoofl hour before bed, use the cheap bulbs or turn the lights down and stop looking at bright screens. you will feel drowsy. a big tip to the parents. it's a good time to tell kids bedtime stories and you fall asleep while you tell them. the kids put their defenses down and as they fall asleep, you can tell them stories and lessons that they can use in their lives. it's a bonding technique. probably the best parenting tip i could give a new dad. when we come back, i get my flu
