>> they threatened me with a sharp weapon. they kept me confined all through the night and forced me to do what they wanted. >> police are searching for a seventh suspect. a 23-year-old indian woman died from injuries after she was gang raped on a bus. this is belfast in northern ireland, protesters throwing bottles and rocks. police answering with tear gas and water hoss. tension between them are the highest in years. the government changed the rules to limit the flying of the flag there to 18 days a year. that's what the protest is about. hundreds of thousands of people protesting same-sex marriage rallied in the streets today. france's president is pushing the plan to legalize same-sex

marriage and adoptions for gay couples in france. it's facing strong opposition from the roman catholic church. it's planned to be voted on this coming february or march. former president george h.w. bush may finally get to leave the hospital this week. he's shown on his birthday last june has been in the hospital since november 23rd for bronchitis and a stubborn fever. a family spokesman says they are hopeful the president will be discharged. they are taking it a day at a time. his son, former florida governor jeb bush says his dad is expected to be released tomorrow. it's considered hollywood's preview to the oscars. whoever wins big at this ceremony comes home with an academy award later. tonight, the gathering of the golden globes critics. the best film and television.

best dramatic picture, "argo" "life of pi." it's been 30 days since the massacre at the elementary school in connecticut and two days until the vice president makes public his ideas to put the breaks on gun violence. we are live in newtown, connecticut, in a minute. first, listen to the voices today from lawmakers and gun rights lobbyists as the gun control conversation in this country gets louder. >> i'm urging our country's major gun retailers like walmart and sports authority to suspend sales of modern assault style weapons until congress is able to fully consider and vote on legislation to curb gun violence. >> when a president takes the

power of his office, willing to spend political capital, you don't want to make predictions. you don't want to bet your house on the outcome. i would say the likelihood is they are not going to be able to get an assaults weapon ban through this congress. >> this community is still really grieving. this is certainly about the families of the little boys and girls lost. it's about teachers and administrators and first responders who in the fury of the days and weeks of the shooting didn't understand how deeply it affected them. this is going to take a long time after the report comes out for the citizens to recover. >> susan is there. residents spoke about what should happen to sandy hook elementary school, the actual building. what do people want there? >> reporter: we heard so many different ideas tonight, drew. all of them were touching and

very heart felt over the course of about an hour and a half. the first time there was a public forum on this subject. included were a lot of people, believe it or not, who are parents of current sandy hook elementary school students who are now, at least for now going temporarily to another school. people had so many different opinions, including tearing the building down, rebuilding it and making it safer, putting a memorial there instead. some of the parents said their children were too scared to go back. others said their children can't wait to go back to sandy hook. we spoke with some of the people who participated in the discussion. >> some people feel very strongly, i could never go back. other people say i will only go back. time has a way of healing. i'm wondering if maybe a few months later or a few weeks later whether people might feel

differently. >> i miss sandy hook. a lot of students miss sandy hook. a lot of parents addressed that concern. many, many students miss sandy hook. it's not the same. a lot of people want to go back. >> reporter: that includes his little sister, as a matter of fact. that young man was so close to what happened, he could hear the gunshots. drew, this is the first of many discussions they will be having on this subject. no decision is expected anytime soon. the next public forum takes place friday. drew? >> there is some kind of press conference tomorrow, we understand, susan, from a citizens group called sandy hook promise. what do you expect that group to say? >> reporter: they will talk about what to do about gun control. this is a group that is very strongly opinionuated and would like to see more done, certainly. they will also talk about, they said, improvements to our

national mental health care system and two improve security at schools. we don't know how many people this group will be speaking for or what the turnout will be. it will be interesting to see exactly what they have to say. >> are they residents of newtown, basically? >> reporter: they are. this is a group that formed shortly after the terrible shooting occurred that claimed 27 victims. they will be there to hold a news conference. they have been very progun control. again, how many people do they speak for? how many other voices might be there? too soon to tell. >> thanks. while people are discussing what to do about gun violence, police in san diego were forced to shoot a man with a gun who ran inside a movie theater. it happened yesterday afternoon. police responded to a domestic

disturbance call and chased the armed suspect into the movie theater. an officer shot the suspect who survived but is in critical condition. nobody else hurt there. a weapon of a different sort turned up in new york city a couple days ago. look at this. it's a revolutionary war cannon on public display in central park for more than 100 years. workers cleaning it friday realized it was loaded. it was a cannon ball in it. live gun powder. >> this is a surprise. it was there so many years. people were sitting on it when it was a loaded cannon. >> the cleaning crew called a bomb unit. in theory, it could have been fired all those years it was on public display. to washington where it looks like the real thing outside the capital building, but it was missing all the key players. a dress rehearsal for next

week's inaugural ceremony. here is athena jones. >> reporter: it was a busy day today. a full dress rehearsal for the big event. we saw the drums and the marching band. members of every branch of the military marching in formation. we had stand ins for vice president biden and president obama as well as the first lady and two little girls standing in for sasha and malia obama. not as many expected this time as four years ago but still quite a crowd. >> what we are hearing is anywhere from 600,000 to 800,000 people coming into the city. you compare that to 2008-2009. the 2008 election, 2009 inauguration, it was almost 2 million. those of us in the business community would love to see 2 million people in the city.

we are not looking anywhere near those numbers. >> reporter: maybe not as many as last time but still hundreds of thousands of people. the good news is there are still hotel rooms available if you are willing to pay a large fee. the average price for a night is $600. one more interesting thing to note is the actual official swearing in ceremony will take place next sunday. it's the constitutionally mandated day for the swearing to take place. the public ceremony will take place on monday, it's a federal holiday, martin luther king day. it's the second time inauguration fell on that holiday. the last time was 1997 for president clinton's inauguration. he will use martin luther king's traveling bible as well as the bible that belonged to president lincoln on loan from the library. coverage starts monday morning. we'll lead up to the swearing in

it's not just screen play, it's jennifer lawrence and bradley cooper. >> they did all right. >> they are here tonight. >> i think it's what's kind of touched so many people about this movie. so many families struggle with mental illness and these issues in their own home. they see this movie and i have to tell you, bradley cooper, i had an aunt who was diagnosed with bipolar. he nails this role. i sat there and i said i have lived this scene. i have been in this situation. it's so true to life. >> dr. oz was kind enough to embrace the picture and said art can sometimes accomplish what every day can't. we all deal with it, sister, brother, father. you encounter it every day. there's a stigma of silence to it. i'm grateful to the author of the book and the film. they can be part of the world and it's funny as hell.

>> it is. >> here is my question. you find this book, david, you find this book and have fabulous actors and actresses. how do you know when you have the magic? >> if it's coming from your heart, it starts. i thought it would be a different scene altogether. it happened in god's time or movie time. five years later, jennifer lawrence was out of high school and ready to be in a movie. matt damon said to me when christian bale played his role, it goes to show you the right person plays the right role at the right time. that's the magic. if you are coming from the heart and you wait and are patient and the right things come to you, you can put it on the screen. robert de niro, jackie weaver, all four of our actors are nominated. they all showed up in ways that will surprise audiences.

i'm grateful. >> can i ask you about tonight? we hear people in hollywood say so much about this is the party. what is it that you just love about this one? >> the hollywood foreign press association, if you don't know the mysterious people that choose the golden globes, but they are from all over the world. they party in different ways. a grand ultimate combination of partying. it kicks off the awards season in a way everybody feels very excited. >> quickly, i cover a lot of hard news, typically. this is my first red corporate. what are you wearing? >> what am i wearing? a prada tuxedo. somebody said they will give it to you. i said great. they were kind enough to give it to me. i was fortunate enough to be out here since the fighter. i want to give a shoutout to deborah and the parents and families there.

weapons until congress is able to fully consider and vote on legislation to curb gun violence. >> president obama made clear he's ready for a fight over the response to gun violence. a somber day for those marking the one year anniversary for the costa concordia tragedy. the crew that died were remembered during a mass today. the ship is still partially submerged in the harbor there. the captain could still face charges there. a ban on american adoptions will not go into effect until next year according to a russian news agency. hundreds of russians protests the ban in moscow believing the government passed it as backlash for a u.s. law that targets

human rights violations in russia. the decision to delay the ban means 46 adoptions now in the process should go through. the hobby lobby chain may have found a temporary loophole to dodge millions in fines for not complying to the health care law. they are not providing certain birth controls because of religious reasons. they will be able to postpone the fines while they try to appeal the case. >> it's a scary thought. you are at school or a public place and a gunman bursts in. what do you do? it could mean life or death. now a company is using frightening scenarios to teach real life survival techniques. >> lockdown, lockdown, lock down. >> reporter: it's called active shooter training.

the scenarios horrifying. >> hey! don't run from me! >> reporter: a heavily armed masked killer. the scenario ended. they use masks to make it as real as possible. they use air guns. in this one, the gunman tried to get in through the door. the people barricaded themselves in. is it helpful, the senatcenario? >> they are realistic. you know they are not real bullets, but you don't want to get shot at even if it's a soft pellet gun. >> home to 30,000 students opened their doors to a texas company teaching civilians s survival skills. why is it important? >> what has been taught to them before has been shown not to work. >> reporter: what doesn't work, he says is only trying to hide

from a gunman. they teach other options like providing good information, barricading, escaping in extreme situations,en countering a gunman. students at alabama university went through it. here in the san diego state, all freshmen will under go the training this fall. >> we want them to know their opgs so they don't waste time. >> reporter: in 1996 graduate students stressed defending his master's thesis killed three faculty members. today, just about everyone has a connection to public shootings. gail's son attends virginia tech where 49 people were injured in a 2007 massacre. >> you are worried about your student going to any school. >> i'm going to kill all of you.

tonight an academy awards. itis the source of big controversy. critics say director quentin tarantino is no stranger to violence and shock value may have gone too far this time. michelle turner takes a look. >> what is your name, boy? >> django freeman. >> reporter: it's not your average spaghetti western. the comedy and violence made a killing at the box office and blown away many in hollywood. not everyone's a fan. >> be disrespectful to my ancestors. >> reporter: spike lee said he refused to see the film. on twitter, american slavery was not a sergio spaghetti western. it was a holocaust. >> he's right. >> they midge lee's version of the film.

>> sensitive to the audience. >> reporter: 15 minutes into it gossip had enough. enough of feeling uncomfortable being the only black person in the theater. >> everybody looks at me. i had to go to the back of the theater to see it from the beginning to the end. >> reporter: by the end, he heard the "n" word more than 100 times in three hours. >> they use the "n" world too much. i am touched by slavery and the mentality. i can give credit to it being brilliant. >> reporter: l.a. reid echoes the thought. he liked the film but felt tarantino should have toned it down. it's a painful part of america's history and still an open wound. a wound that has a scab that is healing. >> i thought it was nice. you have never seen a film like that in that era of time

portrayed that way. when you are a trail blazer, you can expect extra criticism. >> you want it to be criticized, critiqued. people talking about it. >> reporter: now more people are talking about it. >> a slap in the face to our ancestors. >> reporter: community organizers in los angeles called for a boycott against the action figures. >> this is highly offensive. we demand the dolls be pulled immediately. >> calm down. no offense. >> they tell cnn in light of the reaction to the django unchained figures, we are removing them from distribution. they were meant to be collectibles to people 17 years and older, which is the audience for the film. as the audience grows, so will the debate in a country most

agree it's good to be free to disagree. >> of course even despite the controversy, "django unchained" is nominated for best film here and quentin tarantino is nominated for the best director. scott, you were with me oscar morning and we were discussing he was not nominated for best director there and maybe the controversy would have had something to do with that. it looks like the hollywood press is saying we love this movie anyway. >> the hollywood foreign press is famous for marching to their own beat. they are a different group than the academy. the hollywood foreign press association is 84 journalists from other countries or people who write for publications in other countries who have to file four stories a year, not a tall order. they are famous for being

winable, dinable. you can influence them in ways that is harder than influencing the academy which is people who work in the film industry who make movies. i think their tastes are always going to be different.
