this is kaufman, texas. to give you the lay of the land, this is about 30 miles southeast of dallas. the search is on right now for two gunmen. cnn is tracking the developments here on this one and let's start from scratch with me. what do we know? >> the kaufman county sheriff's office told us the assistant district attorney was gunned down and shot in a nearby parking lot outside of the county courthouse. we don't know the motive or if there is multiple suspects. they are looking for an older ford sedan-type car and possible suspect or suspects still on the loose. a local school have been on lockdown. >> they are coming from the previous cases, trying to see if anyone would have been this angry at him. what more do we know about him and his work? >> that is say good point. they are pouring through the cases and that's a point made high up to us. they are looking at the cases and we know he was previously, the district attorney at dallas

county. he had recently transferred to kaufman count tow take the prosecutor role. we don't know much else about him. an adult male, he was according to the sheriff's office, very well-liked. we know that about him. >> as soon as you learn more, we will pop you back on tv. thank you very much. also happening today in chicago, gun violence as you know is spiraling out of control. the city's mayor rahm emmanuel putting more police officers on the ground. take a listen. >> a report was issued which i asked my staff to review with superintendent mckarthy and his staff with the idea of moving an additional 200 individuals and move them out on to the street. >> this comes after this 15-year-old girl who performed at president obama's inauguration was shot and killed at a park. the 42nd murder this month,

making it the deadliest january in a decade. ted rowlands is in chicago with more on this story. with this announcement explain how this is supposed to work. >> basically the mayor announced today along with the superintendent of police here in chicago they are moving 200 desk jobs. cops that are fully trained to be cop who is have been sitting behind desks and putting them back on the streets. they are going to saturate the areas of high crime in the city of chicago. let's be clear. the crime rate went down 8% and the murder rate continued to go up 30%. they are taking place in specific areas and they use this officer with hundreds of others moved on to the streets to saturate the high crime areas to try to put a dent in this murder rate that is going out of control. they need the community's help. what they are trying to do is use the death of this 15-year-old to really galvanize

the communities and help them out. help them out with giving kids other things to do and recording what they see when a crime takes place. >> to underscore the point with the death, we said this is the 42nd murder this month in chicago. it's really her death that is like this tipping point, right? >> this happened before. a 7-year-old that was killed late last year and selling candy on her front lawn a shot and killed. when these innocent victims are killed in the crossfire, it does capture the attention of chicago and the country and they are hoping to use that and her parents are fully behind this. they were on cnn this morning to use her death to really motivate people to change. one of the biggest changes is getting the people who saw something to come forward and help police because the murderers are running loose. they are not being convicted because there no witnesses who will help police out. this case in particular, there

were ten people there when she was shot and no arrest yet. they need the public's help to get these convictions. >> awful. ted rowlands in chicago, thank you. >> tension is spreading across the mideast. in fact over the last 22 months, we have been watching and reporting on the crisis unfolding inside syria. now a deadly air strike from a neighboring country. let me show you where it happened. this defense resource center northwest of the capital city of damascus, the country behind this hit is real. here's what we have been told happened. these planes struck this truck convoy. the convoy was headed to lebanon. they were transporting surface to air missile to the ally, hezbollah. we are hearing from iran and it issues a vague threat to retaliate over this attack. here to walk us through, i want

to be considered here. in any event the israelis don't want them in possession of the more advanced surface to air missiles that can threaten air action by the israelis against hezbollah. >> we have been covering this crisis within syria. this was a weapon transfer within the convoy from syria to lebanon. why would syria want to give up weapons? >> maybe they didn't belong to them or perhaps -- there is a lot of things we don't know. or perhaps syria can no longer protect them. in the statement issued yesterday they made it clear that this had been a target of the opposition groups on several occasions, trying to get to it. it's known that the cia is trying to get to chemical weapons and the advanced weaponry to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong jihadist hands.

wade davis, let me begin with you. this is personal. you played for the titans and -- >> i played cornerback. >> same position. when you heart his remarks, did it surprise you, his tone? >> for did sort of surprise me. i was deeply saddened. i thought we moved a little further ahead in the conversation. i thought that guys would think a little bit before they spoke. i think the fact that he was talking to a comedian, he was trying to be a little funny. it came out horrific and inflammatoryy and i believe he understands the harm his words caused. >> wade davis, this is personal for you because you came out officially in a publication in june of last year. you finished playing back in 2004. why didn't you come out while you were playing? >> i didn't come out because i grew up with the ideology that i could never be a gay athlete

from the time i was 7 years old plag playing a game of football. i thought my sexuality and the game of football didn't mix. i'm trying now to teach people that you can be who you want to be and play any sport or do any career. >> wade, stay there. i will come back to you. let me cope this up to you. how many years did you play are? >> years. >> i didn't realize that there has never been an openly gay active nfl player. only after they played like wade. as you played, did you know of anyone who was gay and not open about it? pa. >> the situation that was the impetus for this, i played with him at stanford. one of the most kind and gentle men i ever met. to hear there was an altercation about it was uncharacteristic and surprising. what you hear wade talk about are the pressures.

the scrutiny thaw know is waiting for you if that were to come out. as antiquated and wrong as it may be, the comments made by mr. culliver are a microcosm of the thought and understanding of what homosexual players were to face. >> this is not just the nfl, but the big three. nba as well. describe the feeling of having to be closet and not being able to be your true self. you are good buddies and players and describe the scrutiny thaw underwent for years. >> to be honest, i never faced scrutiny because no one knew i was gay. there was a feeling that the idea that you are a gay man won't be accepted. i think this is something that you grow up with. it's not something they feel that was perpetuated, but something i had in my mind in high school and college and i carried it on to the nfl.

>> when does it change? we are in 2013. >> for changes by having these conversations. i think some of us in a way should thank chris because now we are talking about homophobia in sports before the biggest game of the year. without that, these conversations would not be happening. in a way he did us a favor by talking about it and say this problem still exists. >> what about as i was watching the clip, you had chris saying the comments and he is laughing as well. >> i think wade touched upon it. this conversation is key. it forces us to dig deeper and look at the issue despite the comments. it must be known this is not every nfl player or organization or team that has that approach and understanding. there players who play for the raven this is sunday in the super bowl who have been outspoken about gay rights and

equality. that's something that needs to be focused on. there leaders in regards to this issue. >> wade davis, i want to ask about this. you chuckled it off. did that strike you as harmful at all? >> that's the biggest problem. people will stand by and be bystanders to hateful language. one of the digest issues i see is that there people who identified straight who won't say i'm against homophobia. that should be easier to have a gay player come out. it should be easier for the players to say i'm against homophobia. that's not happening. i think that's a bigger problem than not having a gay player. >> so interesting about thanking chris culliver for his words because we made this into a national conversation moving forward. >> thank you for having me. >> guys, i appreciate it. new details on the standoff. still unfolding in alabama.

being held hostage by a stranger who snatched him from the school bus and dragged him to the homemade underground bunker near midland city, alabama. we are also hearing ominous reports about this man who has been holding this child. neighbors identify him as jimmy lee dikes. he is 65 years of age, a retired trucker, vietnam war veteran. this is mark from the southern poverty law center. he tracks hate groups and others on the fringes of society. hear what he was told by the investigator in this case. >> he said that officers after speaking to neighbors and acquaintances of jimmy lee dikes described him as being very strongly anti-government in views. anti-america, whatever that may mean. he also described him as a

survivalist. >> the police and fbi and homeland security are on the scene as they have been. the better part of the last three days outside of the bunker. so is george howell. we know that this little boy is 5 going on 6 pretty shortly. he has adhd and asperger's syndrome. any word how he is doing? >> we are all hanging on the last word we got from investigators. we are supposed to get a 1:00 update. we are led to believe what we were told. this boy is physically unharmed. the 5-year-old still in the bunker and physically unharmed. that is good news as we continue to go through this thing. investigators say their negotiations are ongoing and when it comes to the medications, the investigator said they were able to get the medication to the young boy. they were able to get crayons and a coloring book to him.

two things he specifically asked for. it is at least a sign that they are still talking to mr. dikes and have a line of communication. >> what are about this mr. dikes? what more do we know about him and this bunker he apparently had been digging for quite sometime? >> i spoke with a neighbor who said in december he fired a pistol at him and his family. this neighbor had been on the property before and described this bunker as being 15 feet by 15 feet wide, anywhere from 8 to 12 feet deep. he said he saw dikes digging on the property for the last year and a half or two years since he moved on to the property. when you talk to other neighbors about jimmy dikes, they describe him as a reclusive fellow and worried about alien abductions and a lot of people went out of their way to avoid him.

we also learned that mr. dikes had other brushes with the law. in 1995 we know he was charged with improper exhibition of a firearm, but that case was dismissed. he was also arrested back in 2001 for illegal possession of marijuana. under 20 grams. he had other brushes with the law. he was supposed to be in court to face a menacing charge for allegedly firing a pistol at the neighbor. >> over the dirt road between the neighbors. >> right. >> thank you. let us know if anything changes here on the status of this young boy. hopefully he ends up a-ok. hours after the deadly stormed ripped through, another extreme event moving in. which areas will get hit next. so, we all set? i've got two tickets to paradise!

poppy harlow went to the hearing. me what you heard from the papers and what changes are most important to them? >> you know, brooke, it went on for hours and even when they ended at midnight, there were more people who wanted to talk. top of mind for people who want tougher gun rules is universal background checks. someone called it a no brainer. a ban on high capacity magazines and assault rifles. again, even here in newtown where the tragedy happened, not everyone is on the same page when it comes to limning gun rights in the country. every single voice last night no matter what side they were on was respected. >> we all recognize december 14th as the day hell came to newtown. >> we lost our son benjamin the morning of december 14th. >> jesse was 6 years old.

he had really soft skin. >> remembering their beloved children, newtown parents pleading for change. >> the liberty of any person to own a military style assault weapon and a high capacity magazine and keep them in their home is second to the right of my son to his life. >> these are our children that we are trying to protect and this is our world that we need to work together to make a better place. >> calls for tougher gun laws far outnumbered those arguing guns are not the problem. >> neither the size of the magazine or size of the rifle will affect the actions of evil. >> i don't want to be outgunned in a situation. >> michael collins was nervous to speak in the town still grieving so deeply. >> i don't want to have to wait

a 14-year-old student has been shot and a teacher has been shot. i don't know if the shooter is still active and still in the school or has been apprehended. mike brooks just sat down to talk to me, but sir, let me bring you in. what do you know? >> i hear from two of my sources that apparently they had two in custody, but i have to confirm that to make sure. that's the latest i'm hearing from price middle school. there was the 14-year-old teacher. one was taken to grady memorial hospital and the other to the atlanta medical center. unknown conditions. >> as soon as we get more, we will come back to the shooting situation in atlanta. stay with me. as we hear about this in atlanta, the final month of a chicago teenager's heart breakingly short is now part of a debate on gun control.

decade. the murder rate jumped 30% in the last year. chicago's mayor rahm emmanuel making a major announcement. he is going to be putting 200 more officers on the street. >> they issued a report of which i asked immediately my staff to review with superintendent mccarthy and his staff of an idea of moving an additional 200 individuals doing desk and administrative work out on to the street. >> the mayor hopes the teen's death will convince communities to cooperate with the police, president obama is hoping her death will bring nationwide reform to gun control. this too in regard to her death. the problem is that a huge proportion of those guns come in from outside chicago. if you are just creating a bunch of pockets of gun laws without having unified systems, for example, background checks, it will be a lot harder for an individual community to protect

we don't know of any demands he is making. what is the motor for this? was it because he was supposed to be in court yesterday for a men acing charge? we don't know. as the former negotiator, as long as it's ongoing and as long as there is a dialogue and they are allowing the boy's medication in coloring books and crayons, that's a great sign as far as i'm concerned. >> we are not in on the specifics, but put yourself in the police shoes. this is day three of the kid being held in the bunker. what might police in a situation like this be asking for? >> it depends. number one, you want to make sure that boy is safe. there is no sign so far that he is being harmed in any way. some people asked how do they know that? they wouldn't say it unless they thought it was true. if they thought he was being

harmed, they would have an emergency assault plan and try to end the situation and bring the boy out. as long as you have dialogue going, time is on your side. they are watching closely what's going on in that bunker. a lot of people say you have to sleep. this is a bunker. it's underground. there is probably one way in and way out. they have food. apparently there is electricity and the little boy can watch tv. some people are saying you yank the electricity. you don't want to do that and exacerbate the situation. >> why a 5-year-old? i know you don't have the answer to that, but have you heard of a 5-year-old hostage? >> he wanted to try to get two children, but the brave bus driver stopped it. the boy fainted and he was able to have no resistance from the boy to take him with him. as long as dialogue is going, that's a good sign. >> if you are just joining us,

about the situation at least now we are hearing them talk about the atlanta school shooting in south atlanta according to a police source in atlanta. we now know the shooter is in custody. we know that two people according to the atlanta fire department have been shot. a 14-year-old student and a teacher. you had information on where they went? >> one went to the atlanta medical center and one to grady memorial hospital. we don't know their conditions. >> as soon as we get more information, we will let you know. thank you. >> more than a week after the snowmobile maneuver that left him clippinging to life. caleb moore has died. he was competing in aspen and before we show you the video as to what happened leading up to this, you may want to turn away. you don't have to watch. he was trying to do this back flip when he couldn't rotate enough before the landing.

the skis dug into the ground and that snowmobile 450 pound machine slammed into his chest and head. cnn's brian todd has been following the story for us. the family, your hearts go out to them. this is a young guy and they are thankful for the support from his fans. >> they are. they issued a statement thanking them for support. caleb moore's family sending word that the 25-year-old has died as a result of that injury at the x games. he is now the first athlete ever to die as a result of an injury at the x games. brooke mentioned it was a week ago today that the 450 pound snowmobile came crashing down on top of him as he attempted to land the back flip. he was diagnosed with a concussion and then had bleeding

around his heart. complications from the surgery led to a brain injury. we contacted espn and the network said they are saddened by his passing and thoughts and prayers are with his family. espn and others involved in the extreme sports events have come under criticism. many people say they are too dangerous. sebastian landry who specialized in features told the "new york times" last year that injuries in the sport made him lose interest in filming and made it seem like every time they went to the mountains, someone went to the hospital. 18 years, we have worked closely on safety issues with athletes. course designers and other experts. still when the world's best compete at the highest level, risks remain. he was a-time medalist and

landed four times previous. we were reporting on the accident and they are taking a lot of pains to make the games as safe as possible. >> something i wondered about when you watch the video after the crash, you see that he gets up. he gets up and walks around and seems like he is okay. what happened? >> he did get up. he was lucid enough to ask his brother what happened. i spoke it a trauma surgeon at the hospital center and i described all this to her. she said this injury could have been similar to the one suffered by natasha richardson a few years ago. she was in a skiing accident and called what's called an epidural hematoma and he was lucid afterwards and walked and spoke. people who get these injuries have intervals where they seem fine, but blood starts to gather between the covering of the brain and the skull and it becomes too much for the brain to handle.

northern dakotas of 60 delow zero and just last week 76 in kansas city setting an all time record high. >> wednesday it felt like 40 below for the people in north dakota. in marathon, florida, it felt like 82. that's more than a 120 degree difference. the extreme weather also packed a punch when violent tornados ripped through the southeast. atlanta yesterday at 6:00 a.m. was 68 degrees. fast forward 24 hours at 6:00 a.m. today, 33. seems everyone is talking about and feeling some kind of extreme weather this winter, but what really is going on? to get normal temperatures on a winter day, you need the jet stream to slide. the warm stays to the south. we haven't had that jet stream for many weeks. we had big troughs in the jet allowing the cold air to come to the south or rinls to allow the warm air to go to the north. this was what it was like last week.

think when i was driving up, i got chills because i saw the super dome and there is so much history there. it's where my family is from. iberia, louisiana. it makes me emotional to have a halftime performance. i think of my heroes and it's the one thing when i am no longer here. it's what they're going to show. it is something i am so honored to be doing at 31 years old. when i got into the super dome, i took my shoes off and planted my feet into the ground and i ran. i'm trying to learn to live in every moment. these moments are not promised to us. i am so, so happy right now. i feel so full and this is such a huge opportunity. i take it very seriously. i'm excited. >> we see you be so, so open in

if this inauguration was unfortunately a time where i could not rehearse with the orchestra because i was practicing for the super bowl. that was always the plan. >> as far as the grammys go, what are you going to do? >> who said i was performing at the grammys? >> you don't have that much going on. the inauguration and the super bowl. >> not that much going on. i don't know if i'm performing at the grammys. >> speaking of cbs, the next question is here. >> hello. >> that clarified one thing. you were sing along with the prerecorded track. at the inauguration were you singing as well or did any sound come out of your vocal cords during the national anthem? >> typically they have you sing a prerecorded track because anything could go wrong. i did sing along with the

for this performance. you are a perfectionist and you care about the details. we hear it takes eight minutes for the crews to clear and get your set going. can you give us any insight into your set and how quickly you have to move with your crew. this is choreographed. >> yes, it is. i think 7 1/2 minutes for the volunteers to put the stage together. it took so many months to decide what the stage was. some of the things that were in my head just wasn't possible to put together in that amount of time. i met the volunteers and they are so incredible. we are all working together. i can't give too much away, but i can say that every second matters and we are working. >> which songs? how do you decide? >> that was one of the hardest things. that was trying to condense a career into 12 minutes. all of my songs are like my

you didn't know what happened, beyonce, that was her there you go sing the national anthem after she admitted to having the back up voice track that a lot of artist dos during the presidential inauguration sing the national anthem. she walked out during the news conference during the super bowl and before she answered any of the questions, you see the flag over her shoulders and she belted out the national anthem. i want to bring in two voices here with michelle turner in los angeles and michael malden who i want to go to who has been gracious enough to sing this. you knew beyonce at 15 and you were the head guy at columbia records and signed destiny's child currently with ceo artistic control group. we watched this together and you said you got goose bumps. >> i got goose bumps. it was amazing. what better way to say this is

this case caught our attention. handcuffed, interrogated for six hours at seven years of age. this is what a mother says new york city police officers did to her son because he allegedly -- wait for it -- stole 5 bucks. she was horrified when she saw this image of him at the police precinct. what did she do? took a picture. come to find out, her son didn't do it. her family is suing for $250 million towards actions for false accusations. sunny hostin, on the case with

me. they say he stole the $5 but handcuffing a kid, is this even legal? >> you know, it's interesting, brooke. this isn't an isolated incident. this does happen and this isn't something, in my view, that is that unusual and you know what, administrators do call the police and very rarely do kids commit very serious felony crimes. when you protect a child, certainly the child's interests should come first. so this was something that shouldn't have happened, in my view. it does happen across the country. i suspect this is a case that

won't go to trial. this is a case that will likely settle out of court. it's something that we need to examine. when you put a child in this situation, what does that say? does it scar them from life? probably. >> this is from the child. the new york police department is not commenting on the incident. there is a statement from them. we are barred from discussing details involving a minor but that doesn't stop a plaintiff from distorting facts. nonetheless, an internal review is under way. sunny hostin, we'll leave it there. thank you very much. on the case with me today and as i let you go, want to recrack this singing here. beyonce, a couple days ahead of the super bowl as she is performing in new orleans at half time. because of the bit of incident, if you want to call it that a couple of mondays ago, the voice recorded track, she has walked out and proven she's got it.
