>> she can't wait for them to get there. sfwl this happened tuesday morning at the glenwood gardens facility in bakersfield, california. the staff said they were just following policy. they do not do cpr because it's an independent living facility, not a nursing home. jeff, this 911 call, it's pretty hard to hear. a lot lot of us think of our own parents or other loved ones who may be older and worry about the kind of care they may be getting here. is there an ath cal issue here for this nurse? >> i don't believe there is an ethical issue. this is a woman who was just following her orders and therefore is within her rights in every way to not provide this cpr. she may have been afraid that she would lose her job. but now, we have to talk about matters of the heart. i have to think if she would have given the cpr, there's no

way she would have lost her job, no way anyone would have criticized her and if she did lose her job, i think there would have been many people stepping up because you acted outside of the rules, but did so to save someone's life and that's what it's all about. >> again though, the rules as we have said, the rules were to call 911 and not get directly involved beyond that. do you think that the do not resuscitate orders discussions people have with their parents, did that come into play here do you think? we're not 100% sure if the woman had one of these orders. reportedly not 100% sure, but do you think that could have a factor? >> i don't think it's a factor. we're talking about an assisteded living care facility, not a nursing home, so these are people who are elderly. they need a little bit of help, but they are not in critical condition or need critical care.

but i believe, john, the question becomes if you're talking about senior citizens living there and you have a rule that says you cannot do cpr on a person who lives there, then why isn't there someone in residence, why isn't there a doctor on call, a medical staff on call because these people are at risk even if they are not sick enough to be in a nursing home. >> that brings up a good point. the woman's daughter said she's very fied with how glenwood gardens handled the incident, but what do consumers need to know about these facilities? what should we be looking at in terms of what they offer and what they don't? >> well, certainly, when we're look at the issue as you brought up with the dnr, there should be some sort of advance directives given as soon as a person enters

that particular place, so we know what to do. if there is a dnr in place, that they are not resuscitated. if they want to live, then they can actually get the cpr. that is number one. but secondly, and most importantly, even in assisted living, things like this do happen. so who is on board? who is there providing the medical care, who is in residence to be able to provide emergency care? that is important because this happened to this woman and it fell within the cracks of ethics and law, but it probably happens to many other people and how is it take iing care of? >> it is so emotional and every family needs to take stock in this. every family needs to pay attention to what the rules are when they get into this type of situation. jeff, our thanks to you, a really important discussion. >> thank you, john. so, a major winter storm, yes, another one, is expected to bring heavy snow to as many as 16 states early this week. minneapolis will be the first state to get hit tonight with up to a foot of snow. the storm will reach chicago

tomorrow with the same and tomorrow night, the snow is schedule scheduled to move east hitting from new jersey down to washington. some forecast models show d.c. getting as much as a foot of snow. you don't think much happens in d.c. right now, wait until they get a foot of snow. areas of the jersey shore could see heavy snow and coastal flooding. crews are back at the site of a deadly sinkhole today in central florida. workers are continuing to demolish the hole some 20 feet wide by 50 feet deep swallowed a man while he was in his bed. 36-year-old jeff bush disappeared in the hole. he is presumed dead. officials warn the house could collapse at any time. the backhoe operator tried to be careful not to destroy the items in the house. alexandria steel joins us now to talk about sinkholes. tell me this area known as

sinkhole alley. where is that? >> you know, actually, they are more common than you think and certainly a greater preponderance of them do happen in florida, but we've seen them all around the world. here's a picture of one, an under water sinkhole in belize. here's one in los angeles from 2009. you can see this fire truck, fallen down into the hole. here's another one from hudson, florida, from 2012. it begs the question, right, why does it happen? in florida, they are so common. in the four years ending last year, 25,000 people gave and submitted to their insurance companies, sinkhole damage claims, so they are quite common and here's a look at where we've seen them and have had them. in florida and pree dominantly, that alley is in the south. texas, florida, pennsylvania east really the farthest north. tennessee and kentucky do as el.

why? here's the culprit. it is all about this. what lays under the soil that you have your feet under. this is the graph. this is the soil. and this is the bedrock. and the culprit is either limestone or dola stone and it's porous. it's soluble porous bedrock. the rain comes down. the ground soil here becomes acidic and it's this acidic rainwater that dissolves all this limestone. think of a sponge, the holes in a sponge. this rainwater opens this sponge, it can't support what's above, a person, a car, a house. house falls in and that sinkhole happens. that's really kind of the biggest issue as to why and the places in t south and around the world that have them is because of this limestone or any really soluble, very porous rock. we have a lot of that in florida.

other causes are all human induced. whether it's a water pumping, ground water pumping breaking it up, also, construction and all those trucks. water drainage patterns, they may change. someone may be changie ining thd thus, we can see a sinkhole. most likely it's this porous bedrock of limestone. >> our thanks to you. >> sure. casey anthony is back in the knews. she arrived at her bankruptcy hearing in tampa today. this is her first public appearance since she was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter in 2011. she is claiming about $1,000 in assets and almost $800,000 in liabilities. court papers list anthony as unemployed with no recent income. in new york, a tragic ending to a horrific hit and run case. a baby boy was delivered by c-section after his father and mother were killed on the way to

opportunities to improve their lives and the united states has channels of communications directly and those are the channels we choose to imemploem. >> does it seem the mrks is administration is upset about the trip? >> they are pretty much ignoring the trip, dismissing it all together. privately, officials are mortified that not only is dennis rodman the only u.s., only american that has gotten to lay eyes on kim jong-un, but basically, that they're being asked by us and a lot of other journalists, are you debriefing dennis rodman? they say we're not going to talk to the worm about north korea, but it highlights the fact that the u.s. and north korea have zero relations. in the period since president obama took office, north korea has launched two nuclear tests, three long range missile tests and is quickly gaining the

capability to put a warhead anywhere on earth. their policy isn't working. clearly, they don't want to rely on dennis rodman to do their diplomacy. >> a lot of people are making jokes, a lot of others brought up the notion of sports diplomacy, likening it to the ping-pong diplomacy between the u.s. and china. is that like that or something different? >> the u.s. does engage in a lot of sports diplomacy. you saw last week, the u.s. wrestling team was in iran being warmly welcomed. what officials say is this is totally separate, if you look at ping-pong diplomacy all these years ago, there were openings between china and the united states. president nixon had already decided he was going to go to china, engage the chinese. if you look at what kim jong-un is doing, these type of propaganda events are more basketball, public events. he doesn't really want to talk to anybody. what they say is he is not

we have some familiar faces in new positions. i want to make sure that i say thank you to all of you for the work that you've already done and the work that you're going to be doing. i want to welcome jack lew, former chief of staff, now secretary of the treasury. we're thrilled to have him in that position. i want to welcome mr. chuck hagel to position of secretary of defense and to all of you, i appreciate everything that you've done. obviously, we're going to be spending some time talking about potential impact of the sequester on all the agencies and missions across the board. it is an area of deep concern. i think everybody knows where i stand on this issue. we are going to manage it as best we can to try to minimize the impacts on american families, but it's not the right way for us to go about deficit reduction. it makes sense for us to take a balanced approach that takes a

long view and doesn't reduce our commitment to things like education and basic research that will help us grow over the long-term, so i will continue to seek out partners on the other side of the aisle so that we can create the kind of balanced approach. spending cuts, revenue, entitlement reform, that everybody knows is the right way to do things. in the meantime, we're going to do our best to make sure that our agencies have the support they need to try to make some very good decisions. understanding that there are going to be families and communities that are hurting. and that this will slow our growth and we'll need lower employment in the united states than otherwise would have been. but we can manage through it and we're going to rely on the outstanding leadership of all these agencies to make sure that we do whatever it is we need to get done to help america's

families. now, my agenda obviously is broader than just the sequester. because i laid out both in the inauguration and during the state of the union, a very robust gent to make sure we're doing everything we can to help families thrive and expand their opportunities. we want to make sure we've got a growing middle class and more ladders of opportunity into the middle class, so in addition to talking about budget issue, we're also going to spend some time talking about making sure we have comprehensive immigration reform done and i want to again thank member of congress who are moving forward on that agenda. we're going to have opportunity to talk about an issue that's like early childhood education that can have enormous impact on our kids and productivity. we'll have a chance to hear from

researchers say a 2-year-old in mississippi has become the first child ever to be cured of hiv.

elizabeth cohen is here, that sounds remarkable. the word there, cure, is really a wonderful word to hear in this case. >> in medical journalism, we don't use the c word that often, but doctors are using the term cure or functionally cured to describe what happened here. let me explain what happened in the case with this child. this is the case of a child who was born in mississippi to an hiv positive mom and the baby was also it turned out to be, baby was also hiv positive. and then what happened next was that the doctors including the doctor here with me, put the baby on hiv drus. she was on those for approximately 15 months, then the mother stopped giving her those drugs. she was off the drugs for about five months before she came back to the doctor and so the doctor, dr. hannah gay, she retested the baby and the baby was hiv negative. she and her colleagues said oh, my goodness, how could this have

happened and they called in other experts who confirmed she was hiv negative. this has great implications not just for this baby, but for other babies. you treated this baby. when the mom came back in, the baby had been off drugs for five months and was hiv negative. what went through your mind? >> my first reaction was to think it must be a lab error. so we retested and did several different types of tests and found out all those tests were negative. at that point, i rather panickeded thinking that oh, my goodness, i've been treating a baby for a year who's not actually infected. but repeating tests showed that in fact she has been infected to begin with and we're not finding the replicating virus in her blood now. so when you then call ed in

colleagues from the university of massachusetts and from johns hopkins and they came in and tested her, what did they find? >> they did some ultra sensitive tests, some tests only available in research labs and they found that there are traces of viral particl particles, but there are not replication competent viruses, so there are no viruses that can create new virus and create disease. >> so, we have several people have asked me in the years to come, will this baby get hiv again because she has these little remnants still in her body. is that possible? >> that's still a possibility. we're going to be following the baby for a while to make sure that virus does not come back. however, at this point, she's been off of medicines for quite a long time and still has no return virus and this is unique. we've not seen this other cases before. >> so, off of medicine for five

months, but no virus in her body, except these little remnants. she's perfectly healthy, correct? you're not treating her for hiv? she's just like any other baby. that is really amazing. do we think it's just that this baby has an incredible immune system or do we think it's something about the treatment she got that explains this? >> our current hypothesis is because she started early, aggressive therapy, she started therapy at 30 hours of age. we think that maybe we were able to prevent the viral reservoirs or the hiding places, from ever being seeded with virus. >> thank you so much. this is such important work that you've been doing and we're going to be following up with you to see how this baby is doing. so, john, this could have great implications for other babies with hiv. maybe they don't need to be on drugs for life, maybe just a short period of time. that's the next step in this.

our breaking news right now. according to ktvi, a plane heading to parks airport in illinois is preparing for a crash landing. ambulances have been requested. the exact number of passengers,

one report of eight people. we'll bring you more details as they become available. i don't think that's the plane. stay with us. i'm not sure if that's the plane. we're expecting some kind of crash landing scenario. we are told this is the plane. what happened was the plane flew by the tower for a visible, visual inspection. inside the tower, they said the landing gear was not deployed properly. they then determined the plane would have to make an emergency landing. they were preparing for a crash landing at this airport. they called in about four ambulances at least, we believe there are eight people on board that plane. we suspect will try to land soon. we will follow it for you. stay with us. we will bring you developments as they occur. meanwhile, it's being called a smoking gun e-mail. new court documents reveal a connection between a concert promoter and death of michael

jackson. let's go down to michelle turner in los angeles. this is part of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by jackson's mother and children. what are jackson's attorneys saying? >> this has been going on since 2009. the jackson family contends the promoters insistence for michael to hold these performances led to his death and now, we're learning some details about this suit. now, attorneys for michael's mother and his children, discovered this e-mail in the wrongful death late against aeg live. the e-mail the family's lawyers are calling quote this smoking gun is written by the ceo 11 days before michael's death. this e-mail points out that aeg paid dr. murray's salary and says quote, we want to remind him what is expected of him. now, conrad murray was convicted

of involuntary man slugter in the death of michael jackson. this is a big deal because the family the suing aeg live for the rest of his earnings over his expected life. that could add up to billions of dollars in damages. they say there's no way they could have foreseen dr. murray would prescribe such dangerous drugs. >> again, a lot of money involved in this. i have to ma tragi transition now to the death of another singer that everyone loved. the fbi has now rereleased its file on whitney houston. it was revealed there was a possible extortion attempt. >> these files are from whitney houston's hey day and while they may not have risen to the level where she needed to hire a bodyguard, they remind us of the disturbing side of celebrity culture. the fbi released 128 pages of information from the late 1980s

and early 1990s. this included some disturbing fan letters as well as this extortion attempt. we're talking about a back and forth between a letter writer and whitney's father, john. this was in 1992. they're heavily redacted and don't reveal too much of anything, but the fbi report says an individual first threatened to reveal details of whitney's private life to several publications unless they are paid $100,000 and in a later back and forth, it's raised to $250,000. according to this file, john houston arranged for the settlement and sent a confidentiality agroemt. they don't seem to be truly dangerous. one fan sent her 79 rambling handwritten letters that expressed his love for her and at one point, he said if he didn't get a response, he might do something quote, crazy.

the ambulances, it looks like most of the other aircraft has been moved off of that runway there, perhaps trying to clear the space, and, john, we're working to get more information basically as we speak on the air right now. >> and as we said, this plane has circled at least twice, at least twice to try to deploy its landing gear and then to land. the first time it was determined by a visual inspection that there was something wrong. it was cocked off to one side, the landing gear was. they thought they might have to try to land without it. they tried to deploy the landing gear once again, did not seem to be to the satisfaction of either the people on the plane or the people in the air traffic control tower. so what you saw was the landing gear go back up, retract back up into the plane, and the plane is now circling again. we do understand it will try to make a landing. this is in cahokia, illinois, across the river from st. louis. now, our map right here labels

it as st. louis downtown airport. i was told it was parks airport. i do not know if it is one in the same airport or it is trying to land, but this gives you a sense of the general area in illinois. just across the river from st. louis where this is all going on. again, just to bring you up to speed here, looking at an airport now where they're waiting what could be an emergency landing of a leer jet with as many as eight people on board. they have called in emergency crews because there are problems with the landing gear. there have been at least three passes we know of this plane has made so far to that airport, none to the satisfaction of either the people in the plane or the control tower. one of the normal procedures that we have, tory, when a plane is having problems with its landing gear, we have seen planes land without it. >> right. you know, i mean, that could be a possibility here, but perhaps why we're seeing several different attempts at the airport is the plane is trying to circle around, maybe see if the landing gear will come down. you know, i mentioned they're talking with air traffic controllers here, probably still

trying to determine the best course of action because, as you mentioned, eight people on that leer jet, we don't really know the extent of just how bad the situation really is. with the landing gear, you mentioned it was cocked off to the side. we are trying to get this information confirmed, but if you look at what's going on down there, it looks like they're prepared for possibly a worst case scenario, having ambulances on the tarmac, ready to go. you can also see emergency workers standing there in those vests getting prepared, some of the safety equipment. and as i mentioned, one thing is to make sure this airport is clear, that you have people off of the runways, they know there are planes in the area. and in case there is a crash landing, they have to perform here, john. >> i do appreciate that right now. we're hearing from st. louis downtown airport now, which is, by the way, where the plane is currently circling, it is circling over st. louis downtown airport in st. louis, missouri, that a plane carrying at least eight
